I had a good experience (other than the inconvenience of having to go in lol) going in for jury duty. Parked in the lot for free and walked over. Entrance is on the opposite side of the parking lot, but it's nice because when you leave, it's straight out to the parking lot. There was a pumping pod in the back of the jury waiting room. Fathers have zero rights in this place. I got my time taken away over a text message where I called my son's mom. A bad word. Out of the eight years of coparenting like a family. We have one bad day and the judge takes all my time away from him completely to where I only get to see him once every two weeks for about six hours. This place is hell on earth for a dad. Let me start off by saying, it's a great service called self help on the 2nd floor, but keep in mind you need patience to walk inside. There is a process, and you need an appointment still if you want help filling out your papers. We waited. And on our appointment date the lights were out. Two days later after our appointment was at 8am we were told, but doors opened at 8:30 and we were not seen till 10:45. I guess there bigger cases are people getting evicted. But they took them all at one time, then we were next. Our appointment was in close and personal, when I tell you this lady named Maria was an Angel sent from Lawyers heaven. She took care of our paper work for Capitol One and I believe my friend will be A okay. ( Personally Maria gets 10 STARS in my book) That Credit Card Company dragged him lol Karma is a Beast. Compton courthouse is just tore up from the floor up. If your seeking help throughout this building good luck with that. The staff sends you to the wrong floor and the wrong windows all the time. Prepare to stand in a long line and be treated like your a criminal walking inside the door. I felt like a piece of ruffled up cattle by the time we were finished with the check in process. Oh don't let me forget this was our 2nd trip here because the power was out in the courthouse. Smh all the money that flows through these doors and no back up generator. They have Shug Knights cases here really? I'm sure he is embarrassed. And I'm imbarrased to say I live right down the street. They need to tear this building down just like they tore Compton High down and start over. This is a full comprehensive jury duty review. Note: The case is officially over so I am legally allowed to talk about it but I want to respect the parties involved so I won't go into too much details about my case. Ok so the jury service began with me calling the weekend before your service week. You have to call every night from 6pm - 4am the next day. You can also check your online portal. If you don't do this, then you have to start all over with a new date for your service week. I got called in, and another thing to note is please take a photo of your summons to show your employer. Once the people in the office take it, then you will not it back. You can also take screen shots of it and fill it out online. You also need to know how many days your employer will cover you. The people in the office are friendly and efficient. The process to turn in your documents was very quick and you'll be given a holder for your badge. if you get called to a court room. you will be asked a series of questions like your occupation, marital status, previous juror experience, if you or anyone near you has ever been victim of a crime, if so was it reported and if so did it get resolved. You will also be asked scenario based questions and from there, the lawyers will determine 12 jurors and 5 alternates. Because I was picked as one of the 17 lucky people, I got an inside look at a case but again, I want to respect the parties involved so I won't go into too much details. Sorry. The jury room is big with computers that may or may not work, a library, lots of chairs, tables, a private bathroom - all of this is free for you to use if you are a juror. You can take your breaks, or a nap, or read a book. some people have brought laptops to get work done if they are work from home. If you are there during the 1.5 hour break, there is a cafeteria with good lunch and breakfast options, along with some snacks. There are also vending machines if you want a snack (but this only accepts cash). There is an atm machine but I'm not a huge fan of those. But if you want to eat outside, within walking distance is: the habit, el pollo loco, Taco Bell, 7-11, every table, Pizza Hut and of course, my favorite coffee shop in Compton, patria coffee roasters. The only downside is the elevators - I felt like they were a lil outdated and also the fact that sometimes the wi-fi didn't work. I also wished they had a drinkable water fountain and that they allowed crochet hooks so I could make plushies while waiting. read more

Traffic court judge LaTonya Hadnot Prioleau in room 105 is racist. For each defendant there for a traffic violation found guilty she automatically gave them a reduced fine, saying "your fine will be reduced to $50", without the defendant ASKING for the reduction!! She reduced it because she can. When I was also found guilty, I asked for a reduced fine since she didn't automatically reduce it, but she declined it, stating "Unfortunately the court has found you guilty". I noticed the defendants who received her grace and automatic reduced fine looked like her. Good luck if you're not her people!! read more

I'm a lawyer and am only writing this based on 25+ years at this courthouse. My biggest complaint are the elevators. There are 6 elevators and it seems that 3-4 are always not working. When they are the arrow my indicate down, but it goes up. Because of the high numbers of persons working and visiting this courthouse the elevators can be very overcrowded. Courtrooms are large and comfortable. The clerk's office, on the other hand, is the last place one wants to be with long lines and terrible waits. Best to go there i the afternoon if one is able to do so. Nearby restaurants and fast food are plentiful. Not a bad courthouse but basically not visitor friendly. read more

I seem to be on that list of people who get a jury duty summons on a yearly basis. It's been years since I've served at this court house. It was the first court house I had served that had an airport security style metal detector and wand scan, years ago. This is still the security check here, with jurors and attorneys in one queue and the general public in another. Glad I was a juror today because that other line was long. Doing one's civic duty is no picnic. I was grateful that I was able to use the call in system for three days before being required to show up at court. Show your jury summons at the parking structure to get free parking. Even if you completed the summons online and have taken the online orientation , bring the summons in with you , filled out completely because the court staff will collect them. Bonus: a fresh hot kitchen served a really delicious breakfast plate -it's on the same floor as the juror waiting room. The waiting room had several open cubicles with computers, and free WiFi. We were allowed to use our cellphones while waiting. I was so fortunate because a group of us were dismissed before noon with the jury service completed!! No need to serve for the next 12 months. That was like winning the lottery. read more

Avoid this place like a plague. Very unorganized, rude employees, no communication, etc. I don't know how any civilians can fairly win a trial here. I was suing a car insurance company, and the commissioner (not even a judge) had already sided with the insurance company even before he heard my side. He then proceeded to read a written paragraph by the insurance company to end the ruling. Can you say lobbyist and special interests?? Who reads defendant's statements verbatim to finish the ruling? Came here to visit a relative who works as a public defender for this courthouse. Honestly, growing up in LA, I think this was my first time driving through Compton and I was a bit scared. They have parking on the street but I opted for security and parked in the lot which is a flat rate of 6 bucks. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. There is a number that you have to call to make an appointment , you can no longer just walk in and take care of your matter, on top of that the number is always busy for none traffic matters just to get a copy of a form , it says the operators are busy assisting other people and call back later , I was outside the courthouse trying to get through the phones for over 40 minutes with 0 luck ,so if you were already having trouble fixing a legal matter good luck trying to fixing it now with these dumb changes they blame on covid just to justify their laziness on those that run these establishments. read more

My first time jury duty at this court. people working there were nice, place itself is in a bad area, but seemed ok. i noticed a lot of security guards in the parking garage so that was cool. the jury room is big and lots of nice padded seats. cool A/C going. easy to hear the guy talking. cafeteria on the same floor looked ok, i never got anything from there. i got excused right at lunch. woo hoo. free wifi, also had lots of computers there for you to use. a few tables to eat and park your laptop on. The parking garage is big lots of spots ,jury have to park on level four and five good note is that the parking garage height limit level is only 6'6" so if you have a big truck it's probably not gonna go in here over all a good day for me, i would not mind going back here again if i have to. read more

I was hesitant about this courthouse, but it wasn't bad at all. The staff kept me laughing & they were nice. Was thinking (hoping lol) they wouldn't call me for jury selection...they did. I actually enjoyed it! The jury was hilarious! Glad i got to be with them. Serving on a jury is something everyone should experience. FYI, do get there early. It gets super busy, plus you have to take the elevator and there are only 3 or 4 elevators working...I had to wait 15 minutes at least twice. Yes, 15 minutes. I've had Jury Duty three difference occasions at three different courthouses. 1st - Was selected at Torrance. 2nd - Dismissed at Downtown Los Angeles 3rd - Dismissed here at Compton. I don't know if it was the low to no expectations but I had a great experience. If it wasn't for school and financial hardship, it would have been fun serving as a juror again. I reported 2 days ago (4/25) and was dismissed yesterday. - The Courthouse is easy to locate. Its the tallest building around the area. - Parking is free for Jury Duty and there was plenty. - Security was friendly and kept the line moving. - The director that instructed everyone was funny and got right to point. He didn't want to be there any longer than anyone else. - The cafeteria served decent food and they accept credit cards. - Clean and well kept! I had Judge Currey and he was so awesome! He was funny, spoke very well, respectful, firm and down to earth. The attorneys were also easy going. Overall, my experience was great. Like I stated earlier, I'm not sure if it was the lack of expectations but Compton Courthouse is cool in my book! read more

I had to go for Jury Duty at this location. The court was very easy to find, parking lot is available right next to it. It is free for jurors. It was pretty clean. The staff was nice but you have to follow the rules. They are strict. Some people were trying to walk out before the clerk to finished talking and they were not happy about that. So as long as you follow the rules they will work with you and everybody is happy, other than that they were plesant. I suggest you take a book to read or something because it does get boring with nothing to do meanwhile we wait. They offer free wifi, have a couple desk available where you can use your laptop, the chair have cushion so they were atleast comfortable... read more

I got another Jury Duty summons for a few months from now and I got Compton again. Oh well... I want to clear up (VERY CLEAR) my original review of this courthouse from my two-day awful experience was a COMPLETE work of HUMOR. I was way bored, I did not want to be there, and I was trying to keep it funny to pass the time. So for all the terribly mean people (the few) that have sent me hate messages, tried to post awful comments, and been pretty much humorless since I first wrote this...get a life. No one wants to be at a court. Jail sucks. The system doesn't do too many people right. I am not a racist in any way, shape or form. I like to laugh. We all laugh at stereotypes, and no one in their right mind wants to sit for jury duty, not never ever. I had to sit through preliminaries for a case of a man who nearly beat his wife and young child to death over an argument, and it was heart-breaking and awful. I tried my best to find a way to write something funny in my review as a way to get through it. So call me whatever you want, but I don't beat women, children, animals, etc. I do my civic duty, pay my taxes, and put a lot of love and laughter in the universe. Not much to say. It's a crappy courthouse in a crappy neighborhood. I don't know why I keep getting jury summons for this location when my mailing address is so much closer to Norwalk. I need to change my address so I never have to come here again. First time I got summoned for jury duty at this location I thought I was going to get mugged just coming back from my lunch break. Some dude asked me if I can spare him some change. I didn't know if the guy had a gun so I just gave him few bucks so he would leave me alone. The courthouse itself is very outdated and decor is very depressing. The worst part is it doesn't have stairs for public access so you are forced to take the elevator. This place has 12 floors plus a basement so you can end up waiting for quite a long time to catch an elevator since everyone has to take it. I am claustrophobic so this did not sit well with me. Parking structure is just south of the courthouse on Acacia Avenue. Parking is free for jurors as long as you show your jury badge. I think it's $6 for general public. Parking for jurors is on 4th and 5th level. Entrance to the courthouse is on north facing Compton Blvd. There are two lines. Left side is for jurors and employees, and right side is for general public. You have to go through a metal detector at the entrance, obviously. read more

I wish I would stop getting sent here for jury duty. Although it's convenient, I'd rather go elsewhere. It's a rather small courthouse with 12 floors. The line to get in is always ridiculously long and wrapped around the building. The left is for jurors and you can walk right up. Along the process, you unfortunately have to endure homeless people begging for money, hustlers trying to sell you garbage, and a slew of improperly dressed people going to appear before judges. The good thing...the juror room is quite big. The process is thorough and Mr. Chaney makes it as swift and comical as possible. Take a book, crossword, iPad, iPod, or something to occupy your time. Snacks will help too. You may be sitting for a while. read more

Hmm, let's start from the beginning. I was assigned to this court house for my jury duty. I got put on a 10+ day trial even though my job only pays for 5 days. This courthouse was easy to find and the parking garage is right next door. They do make you feel very safe with the TSA style security in the front with the list of 1001 things you cannot bring in. I am terrified of elevators and they only have 3 working in the building currently. This leaves you to be squished into the elevators so tightly you can hardly breathe all 12 floors up. The building itself is older and run down and not super clean so bring your own sanitizer. I give this place 3/5 stars because it is in Compton, and I wish I could click my heels together 3 times and be back home in my little courthouse on Maple. read more

Accidentally went to this courthouse of pain because the LA County website said birth certificates were available from the county clerk there. FYI, they are not. Do not go here if you need a birth certificate. They're available at the LAX clerk's office five days a week, or the clerk in Norwalk on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Cons: The place was filled with hard faced sheriffs deputies who look like they'd shoot you and drop a plant piece on your chest without a second thought, and lots of miserable jurors and defendants. Avoid at all costs unless you're charged with a crime or looking for a little of that post-apocalyptic Compton flavor. Pro: On the way out I got some great pictures of the Watts Towers. read more

Had Jury duty. Parking and getting through security was no issue at all. However the issue i had to go back to get the dismissal slip for my work. I went straight to the jury duty room on the 2nd floor where one of the two clerk was rude, didn't care to listen to me fully, and kept cutting me off because he looked like he had either a bad morning, took out his issues on me. So as I was explaining to him I was there to pick up the dismissal slip he said i have to talk to the judge and nothing else he can do. I went up and spoke with the clerk on the floor I was reported to during my jury duty time and she told me to go down to the 2nd floor. So the whole time I was going up and down about 3-4 times. Finally after the last time I went up north the clerk at the jury room who was professional and respectful had me wait in the lobby hall as she contacted the clerk on the 2nd floor and made sure they gave me the dismissal slip. She came back to the hall after about 2 minutes and told me I should be good and they shouldn't sent me back up. Now at this point I was already upset at the fact the clerk on 2nd floor was rude, cut me off and kept sending me up. As I got to the 2nd floor and back to the clerk I noticed his attitude changed a bit but i felt like he could've been more respectful and let me finished instead of cutting me off. Hopefully nobody else encounters this or a similar situation with this clerk because honestly it ruined my mood on what I thought was going to be a quick in and out for a dismissal slip. I would give the clerk at 2nd floor a 0 star for the way I was treated from him but for the security at all the entrance I went through and the clerk at 10th floor a 5 star. read more

The initial dread hits when I open my mailbox, and I see that pinkish jury summons. My heart sinks and I open it up to see where the County of Los Angeles has decided to send me this time. I keep hoping that they'll send me to Norwalk (it's the next city over). But instead, for the last two years in a row, I've gotten Compton. I also love how you can see the courthouse miles away as you make your approach to it. It's a tall tower that overlooks a city that needs a daily dose of justice dished out in imposing manner. It just screams: "I'm a large government bureaucracy that can mess up your life if you screw up." Now, I know what you're thinking...Compton: That's a gang-infested, run-down high-crime town, right? Well, probably so, but not around the immediate vicinity of the courthouse, surprisingly. There is a plethora of cops in the area, so I suppose that placed me at ease when I drove into the parking structure. The roads were relatively free of vagrants and homeless and just a few smatterings of minorities with ten children apiece over at the McDonald's across the street. As I drove in, I already knew that for lunch, I was going to drive back to the Los Cerritos Center and have lunch back in my safe little hometown on the other end of the 91 Freeway where there is no need to have the justice system remind its citizens of its existence. I figure: No need to give sales tax to a hopeless town who'll just squander it away on alcohol and drugs. The actual processing of jurors, though, is really quite efficient. I went through the metal detector, I got in, checked in, sat in a large jury room with a pretty entertaining proctor who joked that people from La Mirada were on the fringes of being summoned to the Compton courthouse and had to drive the longest to get here, and eventually was told to report upstairs for a jury screening. My most recent visit got me to that point, but apparently, during the lunch break and before any trial could begin, the defendant and prosecution struck a settlement and we were dismissed. I tell you, I was glad I was able to go back home with a full day's pay, plenty of sunlight left, and my tires in place. read more

Not to sound snooty or bougeroise, but one knows they're in the ghetto when there's graffitti on every pillar of the court house and on some of the exterior doors and I have pictures to prove it. I don't even know why I was sent to this court in the first place as I got a speeding ticket in Long Beach on the 405. This courthouse is a prime example of why the State of California is in a budget crisis. Every sheriff I saw was overweight and probably overpaid! How can a person be in law enforcement and be so fat?! Thanks for raising UC tuition 30%! To put icing on the cake the incompetent female clerk who charged my card for payment of my ticket charged me twice and I was not able to eat or get gas. FML. I called them and they said they didn't know what to say but wait it out. BTW, it can take up to 2 weeks for the 300 dollars to be released back to my account. Idiots! read more

Jury duty-first time going to jury duty and I spent most of it trying to nap while I and about 40 something other strangers were boring ourselves to death. The torture lasted from 7am (didn't need to get there till 7:45) but I'm just one of those people) till 3pm. While the wait was long and boring, that didn't bug me as much as this one talkative person that i just wanted to reach over and choke. A girl that was loud and didn't care for those around her. Worst of all, I speak both Spanish and English but I HATE Spanglish and that's all I heard those 8 hours. Pick a language, Spanish or English. And shut up, no one wants to hear your annoying high pitched voice. You look 60 but sound 15. I wouldn't mind coming to this courthouse for jury duty again, but what kills it for me is the people, the other jurors that you really wish you could get away from. But here you are, trapped for what seems forever in a room. Trying hard to tune out people's annoying conversations or having to listen to the 100th person complain about having to be there. We all have shit going on, suck it up. Please god give me the patience to deal with these idiots. read more
