Served my civic duty for one day in the jury room. Only 36 citizens were called in to serve. The lady taking our info in the jury room was pleasant and professional. I was grateful that I did not get on the jury panel for the case. I had prior commitments for the week! Free juror parking - the parking ticket is stamped for validation in the jury room. But there was no attendant at the end of the day to take the ticket. So it was still free regardless. No cafeteria on the premises but many food options around. Restrooms were clean and stocked. No photographs allowed in court of course. Jury room has basic computer equipment for temporary use if you need it. Several people brought work with them , I brought a book.. read more

Bad experience. I had to use restroom 10 minutes before court opens. Front guard a male said I have to wait till 8. Not a good experience, I'm elderly and my legs have nerve damage. 9/7/22 Due to scheduling issues, I had to delay & reschedule my reporting for jury duty. It never occurred to me/didn't really know that I could have in the past. I mean, why not? Luckily I opted for this week since it's Labor Day week and so it was a short week to begin with. Additionally, I was not required to report on Tuesday (1st day of jury selection). So when I was called in to report on the second day, it was for alternate jurors. There were 11 of us and had I known that it for waiting the whole day until 1:45 pm to be even called in to select alternate jurors, I should've brought my laptop to do remote work, or something to pass the time productively. I was impressed that the room where we all waited was equipped with a fridge and a microwave for potential jurors-for our convenience. There's no cafeteria in the building, not even vending machines. Lunchtime was 12:00-1:30 pm and there were some fast food places within a few minutes walking distance from the courthouse. It was over 95 degrees at noon. Ugh! What's worse, the AC was not working properly & an electric fan was being utilized where we waited before being called into the court for jury selection. Atleast it was just 11 of us in that room, if if we're the first day with a full room, it would've been brutally HOT. The court room was small & I felt compelled to wear my mask although the rest of the people inside opted not to wear theirs. No such thing as six feet apart anymore. I know wearing a mask is to protect others (not myself) but it's better than nothing. Was not chosen. I'm glad though that this is where I was assigned--instead of DTLA. It was closer to home. The parking lot is $16 all day. The lady working there is nice and she let me pull to the side so I could take care of an issue with my card instead of potentially blocking others exiting. Inside the building, if you are waiting, there are no outlets so you can't charge your phone. read more

This another jury duty review. Note: the case is over so I can talk about it, but I want to respect the parties involved, so I won't go into too much details. There was a flood in the Compton courthouse, so the 16 lucky people and I who got jury service - got sent to Norwalk. Compared to Compton, the jury room is up to date with a fridge, a microwave, more tables and lush seats. tables. There are also outlets if you want to charge your phone but just make sure to look after it. The staff will even will provide you with scrabble, jenga, and other board games if you are bored. The only downside is there is no onsite cafeteria. But they do have vending machines on the first floor with lots of snack options and drinks. There is also a farmers market that goes on every Tuesday, along with a nearby library if you wish to check out a book. if you got summoned to go here, let me be the first to tell you how its going to go. if you didn't fill out your jury summons, the juror staff will walk you through it to clear up any questions or confusions. They also have a book of employers with all the juror days they pay so you dont have to call your employer in case you forgot. Sometimes, a judge will come by to thank everyone for their time and to let them know they are done for the day. Other times you are there waiting for the entire day so I highly suggest you bring book to read. it helps pass the time. you do get a 1.5 hour lunch - there are lots of food options such as subway, the habit, jersey mikes, McDonalds, target, the coffee shop inside the target, Pizza Hut, the taco place, Hawaiian bbq, you name it, they have it. There is also an AMC if you want to watch a movie during your 1.5 hour break. Your parking will be validated so you dont have to worry about paying. Overall, if you are going to be stuck in jury duty, I'd rather it be here. read more

Good place to go to jury duty! Parking is right in front of the entrance and free for jurors. Entry to the building is easy, you have to put your items in a basket to be scanned, and you walk through the metal detectors (an officer may also use the wand). It's my understanding that you just can't bring beverages with you unless they are sealed. Not sure. But you can bring computers, tablets, earphones, and other items to keep you entertained. P.s. There are vending machines right next to the entrance for snacks. The elevators are right beside the entrance as well, very straight forward. Although two were out of service during the time I was there. Then they were "reopened" but still made weird sounds so people were concerned. The jury room is very nice. Tons of chairs, nice lighting, outlets, and restrooms located in there as well. They have a microwave and fridge so we can eat if we brought anything. The actual courtrooms are a bit crammed honestly. Uncomfortable seats, and there are not enough seats outside the courtroom so many people had to stay standing. Overall though, this place is nice and it provides a very straight forward experience. It won't make jury duty any less of a waste of time, but at least everything else is quick. read more

I was served with an EVICTION NOTICE from some African man, I then called "Justice for Wendy" after I hungry up the phone the delivery guy asked me ,"Do you want to suck my d**k"? On Friday March 24, 2022 the Bellflower Sheriffs came to (enforce) the EVICTION, I showed them my documentation I had received from "Turbocourt.com" that stated the case had been "DISMISSED" So therefore my mother and I never atended Mediation Court on January 20th 2022! As soon as I stepped into this building for the first time the security lady, who I didn't get a name out of, completely ignored me yet didn't have a problem giving me attitude on what to place in the security x-ray box. Once I made it inside the building itself I had trouble using the elevator since one in specific had the room number I needed to head to. Thinking I had to use that particular elevator, I waited for a couple minutes waiting for it to open and pressing the button. Once I noticed it was not opening I had asked her for help and she, once again, full of attitude claims how I had already missed a bunch of other elevators. For someone who has a lot to say, not very helpful, terrible customer service :) Such a horrendous face to not only the court, but to the public you're supposed to serve. I see no excuse for this behavior and you should be monitoring not only your staff, but these reviews as many other people have had bad experiences with staff as well. It is completely unacceptable behavior, especially in a place of law. A child has more respect than this woman, yet she gets paid to try and humiliate the public. Do better with your staff. She was a tall, skinny, dark skinned woman with medium length, straight, black hair. The entrance I had used in this particular encounter was the one right by the parking lot. read more

I went into the office public defenders office room 1 09 just for some simple information and the public defender last name Gil treated me with utter disrespect. And it's the holidays management. Need to continue to try to have some type of customer service because they are dealing with the public. I am not in trouble and to talk to me as if I am the one in handcuffs are incarcerated is unacceptable. I will be reaching out to management. read more

Came here to get my marriage license ($90 for private) with my husband to be on a weekday, a little after 12 pm. Parking was easy to find in the large lot right in front of the courthouse. I highly suggest that you fill out the form on line prior to coming to help speed up the process like we did. Anyways, when we got here, there was quite a line for the marriage license department (on the left hand side when you enter the courthouse). We were probably waiting 30 or so minutes? I don't quite remember exactly how long it was. When it was finally our turn, the woman who was helping us was very friendly. She had to type up some information on another form and printed out to let us see if everything was correct. I wanted to change some of the information that was on the form and she fixed that for me without any problem. After that was all taken care of, she gave us a packet that we needed to give our officiant after he marries us so that we can make our marriage legal. Overall, a fairly painless process, but did take a bit of a wait (but you've been single up until this point, so what's another 30 or so minutes? Why rush to get married anyway? lol) read more

A divorce is not final until a judge signs a judgement, which takes a minimum of six months after a respondent has been served. Bring your own eight stamps because the Snak Bar overcharges to make up for those $1 bags of chips and $2 juice bottles. Contested divorces require a trial but uncontested ones only need filed judgement packets and notarized signatures. Free divorce and paternity workshops but $395 to file the forms (waived if you are receiving Calworks or county relief). The copy of Notice of Entry of Judgement takes about two months in the mail after the final declaration of disclosure of judgement forms are filed for a signature. I found out about the underage marriage application, bah. I learned about SmartLaw [213.243.1500], a number you can call to get pre-recorded legal information from the county Bar Association Lawyer Referral and Information Service. I thought we were just going to drop off a sheet of paper but it turned into two hours of filling out three packets then getting those copied. My father-in-law didn't respond to the divorce petition so we were in court to request to enter default. Parking maxes out after an hour and a half so even though they charge $2/15 minutes, you'll owe $12. Step one of divorce though county superior court is filing a petition from the Resource Center for Self-Represented Litigants then you prepare a preliminary declaration of disclosure and have the respondent served with a packet. The other party is given 30 days to respond. They also carry Kinship Support Center brochures from the Department of Children and Family Services about being a relative caregiver. This is stuff I probably shouldn't know about as a newlywed. We were helped by a clerk with the Justice Corps, which I had never heard of before. read more

Pure evil. I have gotten numerous jury duty notices throughout my life and have NEVER asked to be excused, I ALWAYS show up to serve. I just got a notice to serve and sent back a request to be excused, properly filling out the form and having my oncologist fill out the appropriate form to confirm that I am being treated for cancer each week. I just got a response - excuse DENIED. I must show up and serve or risk arrest. WTF???!!! So the court is telling me they don't give a damn about my health, that they would rather me come to the courthouse for a week and not be treated; that they would rather that I die than miss jury duty. I NEVER leave any type of review for anything at all but for this I am. Public defender was HORRIBLE . Gil magolly not sure if it's spelled like that. She was always so RUDE DISRESPECTFUL to all of us and my husband. I would not recommend her to be your public defender. She basically did nothing for my husband. She played him all around with his case. Just wanted to settle for whatever so she wouldn't have a loss on her record. Always made it seem like she was for the other side and not her actual clients side! Which is her job! Would always tell my husband one thing & tell me another & she never wanted to share any details of MY HUSBANDS case ! We are legally married & he gave full authorization for me to be involved & know every detail & she never took the time to talk to me ever! Everytime I asked a question she would give me a look like if I am asking a stupid question. Which no question should be stupid cuz every detail matters! So Jury duty again but this time I'm driving all the way to Norwalk. I have Jury duty every couple years and have been to Torrance, Bellflower and Compton. This place is a close second to Compton. The jury room is clean but there are problems. The TV doesn't work and there is wifi but extremely slow and the firewall blocks out all major sites that stream or shop. So a bunch of people sitting in a quiet room with their heads in their hands because they are bored out of their minds. If you ask people to serve at least offer something to keep them from going insane. read more

***This review is solely based off of my experience while reporting for jury duty.*** So, I'm just going to say this - I definitely lucked out being assigned for jury duty at Norwalk Courthouse. My original assignment was Downtown LA, and I swore after my last visit I would never return. I was lucky, and got it switched to a courthouse closer to my employer, and ended up at Norwalk. First off, the courthouse has a specific parking structure that it instructs jurors to park in. You can enter off of the east side of Manuel Salinas. Parking rates are pretty steep ($2.00 per 15 minutes, with the rates maxing at $16.00 per day), but the courthouse WILL validate your parking making it completely FREE. Just MAKE SURE you bring your parking pass with you when you report to the juror room; they'll validate parking before they start assigning people to potential cases. If you didn't complete registration on-line, you'll have to arrive right when the courthouse opens - so make some time to stand in the line for the metal detectors. The security is actually pretty lax, and they'll allow you to bring in outside food and drink as long as it isn't in a glass container. SO, if you're looking to save a few bucks? Be sure to brown bag your lunch for the day. Once you pass through, take the elevators up to the 7th floor and just make a left down the hall. They'll tell you to hang out in the corridor until they announce that they're ready for jurors to enter the room. Check-in actually goes pretty fast, but just make sure you bring your jury notice. Not only will you beed the badge, you'll actually have to complete the long form that comes attached (yes, EVEN IF you filled it out on-line). If you're like ME and forget it? They'll just hand you an entirely blank form and send you back outside to fill it out. The room is actually quite large, and equipped with tons of comfortable seating. Wifi is available, and you can being tablets and laptops with you. If you're "roughing it," then they have tons of games to occupy your time, and the TV is always on...so at least you have something to sit and stare at. Also, let me give you some advice: DO the on-line registration. Most people are under the assumption that if you just choose to not register, and wait to call in to see if you have to report, you'll have less of a shot at having to come in. If you complete the on-line registration, you'll be instructed to arrive at 10am. If you don't complete the registration? You'll have to show up when the court opens, and you'll STILL have to sit through orientation. Also, the amount of people in the room who called in actually outnumbered those of us who pre-registered by at least 3 to 1. So, it really won't help you to just say, "I'll call in daily." There is no ACTUAL cafeteria on the premises, but there's a small snack shop on the first floor, to the right as soon as you walk in. Be sure to bring cash, or you'll have to spend a minimum of $5.00 in order to use your card. They sell water, juice, chips, and other assorted snacks as well. Plenty of places to eat very close to the courthouse, as well! There's a McDonalds directly across the street from the courthouse on Imperial Hwy and Norwalk Blvd. In the shopping center off of Norwalk Blvd, you'll find a Habit, One Hawaiin BBQ, Panda Express, Jimmy John's subs, and much more. Keep in mind: the court will not compensate you for your first day at jury duty. HOWEVER, if you're ordered to appear the next day (or further on), you will get reimbursed $15.00 per day. All in all, definitely one of the best courthouses to be forced into performing jury duty. It's definitely an older location, but they've done a great job with conserving it and keeping everything working well. It doesn't smell like a foot (if you've been to Compton Courthouse, you know what I'm talking about), the employees are actually quite helpful, and it's centered in a great location. read more

I don't know what it is about me, but I get jury duty like nobody's business. Actually, it's slowed down in the past couple of years, but before that, I had more jury summonses than I've had serious girlfriends. The first time I actually served jury duty--as in I had to go down to the place every day and sit around and read for hours in a bare, horrible room--I eventually ended up on a jury. I won't go into the details because they're boring and because it was generally a horrible experience, but I was on a jury that convicted a man of attempted murder. I don't know what the sentence was, because we were only involved in the innocent-or-guilty portion of the trial. I'm actually glad I don't know what he got, but there's a part of me that still feels awful for partially being responsible for taking someone's freedom away--even though I know he did it to himself by trying to kill his wife. Anyway, like I said, the jury room is really bare and horrible. They've since changed the setup; you no longer have to come in every day. I know this because this is where my parents still do jury duty. There's a convenient lot to park in, but I don't remember whether they validate for jurors. I'm glad I don't have to come here anymore to do jury duty. I know you don't get a choice, but if I have to be on a jury again, I really want to be on a civil trial, not a criminal one. read more

The primary reason I gave this review 4 stars is due to the fact that over at the legal information center (I think room 101 or 104) this volunteer named, Jason, offered me excellent professional and respectful skills. He and one other volunteer had a lot of work and people to cater to and of all that, he sat down, listened to me and explained information as thorough as possible. Thanks Jason! This volunteer deserves recognition. It is a shame that the actual employees cannot maintain a positive attitude and respectful behavior towards the people. We as respondents or petitioners or anyone else in the system, are stressed, frustrated, confused and negative about our pending cases that at least an effort from the court to better their service would help us remember there are still good people out there willing to help. I showed up here for some work and it was a cool courthouse. I don't particularly like parking structures at these court houses because I'm never sure if you're able to get the tickets validated or if you're going to be stuck w/ paying 2 bucks... I know, I'm a tightwad sometimes, HAHA. Anyways, from an superficial standpoint the courthouse definitely shows some age... I'd say it has a very 70s/80s feel to it. That being said, it's been very well maintained... nothing looks dilapidated and the hallways are clean and the lights are free of age-old flicker. Security was a breeze, no frisking or anything needed here... in you go! The vibe from the security staff to the administration departments was really mellow--It definitely helped that I was there on a Friday. Where the Norwalk Superior Court shines is it's location. You're right next to an AMC Theater w/ plenty of places to eat. So if you're ever stuck doing jury duty... ask the staff to let you go catch a matinee as you wait for your name to be called... maybe not, but worth a shot, ha. read more

Went to the courthouse this morning about 10:30am. I was sent to window # 1 (unlawful detainer), where I was "helped" by a very unattractive, heavy set woman. She was so incredibly rude, that my stomach hurt by having to deal with her horrible attitude. I'm ASSUMING that his woman is unhappy with her job, and her looks, and takes it out on whoever stands in front of her. I was just here this morning for jury duty so I would like to give my due service to fellow yelpers (no monetary, jail, or bench warrant threats needed). SUMMARY/TIPS: -No need for business casual dress. Just go casually as long as you wear long pants and real shoes. They just don't want beach hippies there. -I heard scheduling jury duty on a Tuesday and/or December is the best time. Tuesdays are awkward days because most trials begin on Monday. I was on call since Tuesday and had to show up today, Friday. For December, it's a slow month and trials are not scheduled around Christmas and holiday time. Maybe for maximum effect, schedule you duty for a Tuesday in December? -Jury assembly room seats are comfortable, but it still doesn't mean jury duty is super COOl, bro. Bring a book or laptop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROCEDURE: You park at the parking structure on San Manuel and then you walk over to the court building for a security checkpoint. Same thing as the airport security checkpoint minus the shoe check. The guard at the door was leaning against the wall, clearly bored to death. He stood still and just stared at the x-ray monitor as I entered. Easy. The jury assembly room is on the 7th floor. Take the elevator up and make a left down the hall. The assembly room is 703. I showed up at 10 am because of my online orientation. I did have my certificate, but a lot of people in the check-in line claimed that they did it, but forgot the paper. Apparently, the clerk didn't really care. I waited in the room for about 30 minutes then the 1st panel was called. It was for a 20-day trial. OMG. I held my breath for that one. Next they called names for Panels G and O. I got called for G...dammit I thought. After Group O was called, the supervisor said G and O could go home. Everyone got excited, but then she said J/K. Despair filled the room, but the supervisor then explained BUT WAIT. The cases have been filled for the day (only the 20-day one) and the remaining jurors are excused. Supervisor then proceeds to tell us this usually doesn't happen for jury duty so be aware next time. Wooooo! BUT... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NORWALK SUPERIOR COURT, Y U GIVE ME HUGE MIND FUCK! No Body likes to serve Jury Duty. Who would? The difference between the last time I did it here, and this time, is night and day. Before, those people in charge of Jury Services knew they had all the power, and they yielded it to their advantage. Today (really, today, today, not yesterday) a complete change in attitude. Politeness, and openness was there. They were actually nice and accommodating. I had to look around to make sure that I was in the right place. I was. After an hour-and-half orientation, multiple languages being spoke and the air conditioner fluctuating between freezing and Palm Springs in August, I knew I was in the right place. I went for jury duty on Friday after a Failure to Appear notice found its way into my mailbox. I didn't purposely evade service, I honestly just forgot. It happens... I went to jury service for one day, approximately 30 minutes. No trials were starting on Friday, so I (and the rest of the potentials) fulfilled our day of service in just under an hour. The jury waiting room is quite large, and more comfortable than the only other I've been in (Compton court). This parking lot is really convenient, too, not too far of a walk to the building. And it's free. All in all, not a bad place to fulfill my civic duty (though I admittedly did not do much). read more

Every lawyer I have spoken to has said the same thing!!! When I spoke with one today...she told me a client was told by the judge that if her ex couldn't afford child support, he didn't have to pay! The black lady with the big bun (FILING AREA) is always in an attitude. She's extremely rude to the point of me actually waiting for the next window to be available. She does not know how to deal with people. I've seen her 2 times and both times really rude and I was with my child. She upset me. The other black lady there is ok, both take a very long time and you wait in line for them to send you elsewhere. The one with the bun is UNHELPFUL. Doesn't explain things and is just overall a person who has a terrible personality. The stars are for the help area and the other black lady who sent me to the help area. That black lady with the bun needs to check herself because that isn't how you treat people. If she had done her job correctly and properly helped me the first time I came in, then I would not have to go to the help area. She didn't even read my papers the first time it seems. Place is always packed but what do you expect. The reason this gets such a low rating is the people who work here. I've been to many departments and they all act the same. Especially the helpers in the workshop they all act like they want to get you out of there as soon as possible and not help you at all. I only had one good visit and I wish I could remember her name. Went there to get married and that was the first mistake.. They didn't ask us if we wanted to get married there and we didn't know that the application process was THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY to request an appointment for a ceremony. Calling back to request an appointment was my next mistake because first of all, how dare I need information that their website CLEARLY doesn't give and second of all how dare I try to confirm the information given. The person who answered the phone got mad at me because I didn't understand the misinformation she was feeding me over their crackling line and had zero qualms about letting me know exactly how she felt. Then the supervisor got on the line and said "Listen." like I'm her disobedient child and told me about how SHE was upset when I tried to deescalate the conversation. I know this review doesn't mean anything to them, but at least I might save SOMEONE from the berating I got for a damn phone call. read more

(This review is based from a juror/perspective juror's POV. I cannot comment on other manners). First of all, I have to admit, if you HAVE to go to jury duty, there are far worse courthouses to be summoned to than Norwalk (Compton, Downtown LA being obvious examples). For whatever reason, I get summoned to jury duty every 13-15 months, so I'm kind of an expert (kind of). Let me begin with what I like: Parking/traffic: Not that bad actually. There is a parking structure and they validate you, so that's a plus. If for some odd chance you lose your ticket, its $2 per 15 minutes, $16 max (2 hours for those who are mathematically challenged). This courthouse is pretty easy to get to via streets (Norwalk Blvd, Imperial Blvd, others), and is easy to get to via the 605 and/or 5. Entertainment: They have wi-fi, or you can use their computers (guess which one I'm doing?). They have magazines and puzzles to help pass the time. They have a couple TVs, but only show boring stuff or the news. Area: For your lunch break, there are plenty of areas within walking distance to grab a bite. Some serve booze, although that's probably not a great idea if you have to be a juror. Naturally, there are an abundance of law enforcement personnel so you feel safe from any unsavory looking characters in the building/area. This doesn't really apply to me, but I know many are concerned about safety nowadays. Dislikes: Nature of the Courthouse: From what I've experienced, 90% of jurors will have to deal with criminal cases. I know its a small sample size, but the 2 times I've served here had to do with things like perjury, aggravated assault, attempted murder, gang violence, etc. These are usually time consuming and take 5-12 days of testimony, defense, objections, litigation, and other court related terms I can't currently think of. This was fine for me when I was younger in college and had free time, but with work related projects, I dread the pile of papers on my desk when I return. Cafeteria: Nothing that I really care for, and its cash only. There is an ATM for your convenience, but I hate paying fees. So that's about it. If you're young, unemployed, retired, have time to kill or simply curious about how our criminal justice system works, by all means serve your jury time here. Cases here are interesting and you will leave with a new found respect of the whole CJ system before you leave. However, if you are too busy or are a jackass who doesn't care about the aforementioned things I listed, try to get out or switch to somewhere like Whittier, Alhambra or West Covina.
