I was disappointed to be leaving as a live band was preparing to play on a Wed night. Ambiance: 5 stars (Very cool place to meet up and hang out. Very efficient and polite; extra kudos for the old-school bar vests) Beverages: 5 stars (We ordered a couple Southside cocktails and a couple Boots to the Head, which was a happy hour special. Located at a corner of a busy crosswalk in SF, we had reservations for Quince and had some time to grab a drink. We found Comstock and got there a little before 5pm on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all. We sat at the bar and looked at the happy hour menu, 2 of us got a cocktail and another a beer and shot. Service was quick, very much saloon style, pretty small on the inside but good quality and strong drinks. Great place to stop by for a drink early afternoon or just slipping through. I just had THE BEST time at Comstock. I've been plenty of times for drinks but never ordered food until last night. I was craving a steak and after doing a little research, saw that Comstock had steak frites on the menu. I sat at the bar and ordered the steak with a Manhattan to wash it down. I was seated at the end of the bar which gave me the perk of being able to see the pianist that was performing on the balcony above. She played fun, lively songs and had a lovely voice. When my steak arrived it was cooked to absolute perfection (medium rare, as requested) with an insanely delicious chimichurri on top and traditional mayo for dipping the fries in. I found the portion to be perfect- not at all small, but not so large that I felt stuffed afterwards. The steak frites hit the spot so hard, I am still sitting here thinking about it. If you're a local, perusing what's up at Comstock, or a tourist, considering Comstock, and you're craving a steak, please do yourself a favor and pop in. Sit at the bar, order whatever drink you think goes best with red meat, order that steak, and enjoy the live music they have every night. You really can't go wrong. And I'm going to throw this in- in a city as expensive as San Francisco, where it feels like everything is so absurdly expensive, I felt like what I paid for my steak/fries dinner, two Manhattans and live music entertainment was a good deal. I've been a long-time fan of Comstock Saloon for years so I was sad to see it closed for so long throughout the pandemic. It's been closed for so long that most Yelpers deemed it closed for good. Imagine my excitement when I saw Comstock Saloon post about their re-opening on their social media? I immediately made plans with a friend to go check out the re-opening. It was fairly busy, but we were able to get seats at a small table. The staff was different but still attentive and hospitable. We ordered a few small bites and drinks. Here's what we thought: Cherry Bounce - Old favorite, still a great cocktail. Refreshing and delicious, still strong. Pisco Sour - Another old favorite, easy to sip on. Warm Gougeres - Served with Bourbon Onion Jam, this was really cute and tasty to eat. Really enjoyed the jam, felt like I was eating a savory cream puff, in a way (jam puff?). Oysters on Half Shell - Super fresh, the Manzanilla Mignonette served with these has great flavor too. Comstock Burger - Juicy, decadent, delicious. We ate it too quickly, I didn't have time to take photos. Comstock Saloon definitely still maintains the same charm and elegant quality in hospitality and in their food and drinks. This space has been here for like 100 years and is a "Barbary Coast" landmark. It has plaques commemorating the history in SF. Fun times because I like historical landmarks of the Barbary Coast. The menu is interesting and has an Asian touch, but it's not quite fusion. It fits North Beach and Chinatown. It's got an old-fashioned saloon character. It's whimsical and for tourists and wanderers. The servers are nice and the guy Jae remembered me because I stopped by last week or so. I decided to have a dessert from the daytime menu. It was toffee pudding and it was fine. It had a soft base and a chocolatey sauce around it in a puddle. There was whipped cream that I avoided. This place happened to be close to a theater show we attended and was pretty good. The drinks were the highlight of the place in my opinion and the music was great! The food is more like small plates, so don't come hungry, but even the bites are delicious. The wait staff was really kind and helpful and gave us enough space with out leaving us hanging. My most recent experience here involved perhaps the rudest bartender I've encountered in a decade. I approached the bar and there were two bartenders standing together. Eventually, one motioned to the other that I was waiting and he came over to me. I said "Could I get two drinks? A vieux carré and a boulevardier?" The bartender looked at me and said, "Hello. Let's start over. Hello." So I said "Hello" and I think I repeated my order. At this time, I'm really just speaking in a normal manner. No biggie, I thought he hadn't heard me, but I got a weird vibe. Then he asked if I had a mouse in my pocket. I really had no idea what he was talking about, but I wondered if I had been fidgeting or something that caught his eye and he was trying to make a joke. Nope. After I said something like "I'm sorry...?" he said, "who is the other drink for?" Oh, ok. I gestured to my partner who was standing with our friend group who had been in the bar for 15-30 minutes already and had already ordered drinks. I said "it's for my partner over there." Then I had to ask, "Does it matter?" I've ordered drinks for us at many bars, and I don't think I've ever been asked this. He stopped and proceeded to lecture me on his profession and his legal responsibilities and how he has to know who is getting each drink and needs to assess whether or not someone is under the influence, etc. (Keep in mind, this was my first drink.) This went on for a couple minutes, then I said, "ok, I don't remember anyone ever asking me this before." And he said "well, I assure you it won't be the last time." Then he started pulling out stuff to make my drinks. After a second, I said, "You know what. Never mind." and walked away. I'm a customer, not a child, and I don't deserve to be lectured to. A simple statement like "I just need to know who each drink is for" would have sufficed, and I'm 100% sure (after talking to my friends) that not everyone was asked this question. On top of it all, I can't help but wonder if, by calling out my partner, that this man didn't react due to homophobia. Needless to say, I won't return to Comstock for a long time and will share this experience widely. read more

Came here for brunch on a Saturday. The bloody Mary's were delicious. So fresh, spicy, you can tell it is made in-house and not from a can. My friend ordered the char sui pork Benedict. A really unique dish and delicious. I had the shakshuka. One of the best I've ever had, the sauce was so tasty. Personally I would've preferred a bit less falafel inside and definitely order with a side of toast for dunking. Will definitely be back to try other dishes. On a Sunday morning, as sun streamed in and passersby peered in, I learned about the history of Comstock Saloon from the friendly servers and manager. It occupies the space of the Andromeda Saloon which opened after the 1906 earthquake. I love the historic photos around the saloon, and the care with which the bar and fixtures were restored. Look for the beautiful ceiling lights and fans. I came for brunch, due to the Chef's Instagram. They have a variety of offerings; I chose shakshuka. It is a hearty, delicious dish with the nice addition of falafel. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice is very good. They offer appetizing desserts (ask for those they serve at lunch - not on the menu). 5 Stars for great cocktails - delicious drinks 0 stars customer service - as talented as the bartenders are, one in particular made me feel very small and uncomfortable. I made my way to the bar to two open seats while my husband was speaking to the host. There were two glasses (one empty and one 1/5 of the way full, looked like it was melted ice). The bartender did not communicate that one of the seats was taken and handed us menus as we sat down. The kind patron whose seat we took politely told us of our error, to which we apologized and tried to make right by trying to leave, he insisted we stayed. However the bartender made a comment to my husband about taking the seats, and made the whole interaction awkward and uncomfortable. Instead of telling us the seats were taken, he made me feel stupid. Great drinks, but will not be going back to avoid such a bad memory. read more

For upwards of one year now I've been aware of Comstock's free Friday lunch. What's the catch? 2 "adult" beverages (beers are fine) and it's yours. In celebration of Emperor Norton's 200th birthday on a Sunday, Comstock Saloon changed the game a bit: Free Pork Belly Benedict was on offer with the same catch. Worth a trip across the City? I think so. Comstock Saloon is a fun place. This visit was my first time dining at Comstock though not my first time drinking there. Drinking, I've always done in the front room which is impeccably old-timey but not quite as much so as the attached room behind it. Both feature excellent bartenders who'll stir up visions of SF's Barbary Coast days in both grooming and dress. It's authentic, not kitschy, and appropriate when you realize that they're plying their trade in San Francisco's second oldest bar. The back room is where you'll find the original "air conditioner" which needs to be seen rather than described. Everything about the place seems from another (better?) time though in a way that works for today. If you're a visitor to SF, this is a good bar from which to enjoy a taste of the City's past. If there's anywhere to celebrate old SF the Comstock is it and they were in full swing for this historic occasion. I counted no less than 4 Emperor Nortons present and drinking as well as a host of women in old Victorian garb doing the same. The food though, that's all 2018. The free Pork Belly Benedict turned out to be more like a half order as I've never known Benedict to cover only 50% of an English Muffin or be served with only 1 egg. It was good, but maybe a bit of deceptive advertising. A burger ($15) was excellent even if it was served without fries (an extra $7, ouch). The menu promised Malt Vinegar Chips but my server warned that they were on the burger, not beside it, and even though I wished for a burger with traditional sides I admit: this was a filling and delicious burger, perfect to sop up the alcohol you'll want to consume here. Cocktails are executed to perfection. A Pisco Punch ($13) was man enough to confirm that I ought not have a second, even if it meant missing out on the free lunch. Ditto on the Manhattan ($11). Comstock Saloon also has Happy Hour deals which, despite the free lunch offering, might be a better value proposition. The Comstock Saloon has been there for a minute, but it's kept up with the times. I've been there a few times now and each time is a delight. My first visit I landed, got into the city, and instantly went for a brunch visit. It was more lunch in my mind, so I went for a breakfast burger and a side of fries. To compliment that I of course had to get a drink, I chose the Barkeep's Whimsy. A place that offers this on the menu is a place I want to be at. This offering means that the bartender will ask you a few questions and then create something for you. That likely means you'll be getting something that isn't on the menu, and you're bound to love it. The bartender did not disappoint and I was in a happy place in no time. On my most recent visit I came in the evening and just grabbed a drink. I gave the same answers to the questions when ordering the Barkeep's Whimsy again, and I received a completely different and yet wonderfully unique cocktail. What a great place and atmosph live music great drinks and great snack food. We were 5 in our group and each one of us likes different drink and they had what we wanted. The place remind you of a bar from the 20's or 30's. Live music in a piano comes from the second floor and just calmly gets to all of us at the bar. Mostly booths and bar sitting. I suggest making a reservation as the place is packed. I have been here more times than I can remember, but I kept forget to write about it. This is hands-down one of my favorite restaurant bars to go to in the city. On our most recent adventure, we stopped in around lunch time, after getting seafood at Swan Oysters Depot. We were already pretty full, but there was this pulled pork sandwich (just the sandwich, no fries came with it), and it was AMAZING. We both got a drink and the sandwich was a freebie (not sure if have to drinks and ask for the sandwich if it will be the same thing). I have been here at happy hour times and late at night, there are times this place can get packed, but as it is super close to everything, it is a must stop when in the city. read more

This is not one of your hyped up IG brunch spot with a 1-2 hr wait. But, definitely IG picture worthy! CS serves such unique dishes for brunch and dinner! I already want to come back to try their other items. FOOD: What attracted to me this spot was the unique items they had for brunch and how it was executed: + Pork Cha Siu Benedict: they stuffed a large brioche-like bun with Prk Cha Siu, topped it with lemon hollandaise sauce with a side of salad. The bread was really good, and the lemon hollandaise worked really well to cut the fattiness of the chasiu/pork belly. They only two complaints I have for this dish was that the pork was purely fat, and had barely any pieces of lean meat & the salads was overly dressed - just too much sauce. + Ham, Caviar Madame Corque: this was their version of a monte cristo - ham and cheese sandwich toast with light gravy with caviar and a side of potatoes. I like how they made this a savory dish rather than a sweet one like the typical monte ones are made and served with jam. The potatoes were also nicely and crispy. + 5 spice churros: this came with 5 mini & fluffy churros with 2 sauces: a spice infused chocolate one and a clean vanilla whip? The 5 spice was very subtle - but it was basically a regular churro with the cinnamon replaces 5 spice ! AMBIENCE: They have 2 sections, one side with an old fashion dinner style vibe with booths and very dark interior. The other side is brighter and has nice marble tables with stools. I asked us to me moved to the brighter side and they were happy to move us. This spot is located on the border of little Italy and Chinatown so parking is definitely a challenge! Been coming here since 2014 for my love of antique saloons in the city and I'm never coming back until they fire the bartender who drives morale down every second he's still working there. FIRE HIM NOW. I will say, the service from 90% of staff is comparable to the worst dive bar one could visit where the bartenders and servers hate their job because they think they don't have a choice. The music and ambiance is derailed by your effort of getting a bartender to acknowledge you let alone take your order. The food is nothing worth spending your memory and since the severs are slow, it comes out luke warm including your cocktails. This beautiful historic bar was not on our list at first, but strolling by we remembered that Anthony Bourdain had visited here and so we popped in. It was early in the afternoon, so seats were available at the bar. We're so glad we stopped in for a quick afternoon beverage and the most temptingly delicious shishito peppers to accompany our drinks. Both drinks were expertly crafted and the service here is friendly and helpful. We loved our impromptu stop and wouldn't hesitate to visit again. read more

Service is hit or miss, as I twice stood at the bar for ~15 minutes without even being glanced at or acknowledged by either bartender (at 6pm on a Saturday when it wasn't even busy yet). They were busy just chatting it up with each other and slowly making drinks for customers seated at tables, but I would have expected at least some communication of expectations or something along the lines of "I'll take your order soon." To make matters worse, one of those bartenders also ran directly into me while walking towards the basement (he was all of a sudden in a rush to move quickly, I suppose). Luckily, the staff and service on the other side (Columbus entrance, darker side with the music loft) was MUCH better and salvaged the evening. Drinks were only average though.
