They helped give me the best anniversary gift I could have ever asked for: no evidence of disease in my husband, who was diagnosed in April 2024 with stage 3A metastatic testicular cancer. They guided him through months of chemotherapy, adjusting it as necessary (and it was very necessary at times, like after week 2, when bleomycin completely obliterated his WBC count in a 48 hour span and landed him in the hospital w/an opportunistic infection), and checking in on him even when he didn't have an appointment to make sure he was doing okay. The outpatient infusion center staff is fantastic, and is beyond impeccable at their job-they are truly amazing, kind, and extremely competent nurses and techs. I hate that I know any of the staff of Karmanos, but I am so grateful that the staff I've met and those who have cared for my husband have gone so far above and beyond to ensure that he received-and continues to receive-top tier care in a really shitty situation. Oh, and one more thing: as always, fuck cancer!

Would be 5 stars however this building has increasingly become less handicap friendly. Last visit there's barely any room to walk past the giant partition blocking entrance when you enter the building, a wheelchair would not fit. I don't feel safe with my car in the lot now that there is now that the lot is owned by another company. The security guards are all always huddled at the main desk hanging out together instead of at their posted positions. The new parking lot company is WAY more expensive than previous lot owners. The parking reimbursement would not work at my last visit, everyone passed the buck. I put a help ticket in on the metropolis app just to make sure what the valet employee told me was true about a refund, and the app closed the ticket because I did not do it right away. I had another appointment to get to and was already walking all over with a cane trying to get help. On top of this at my last visit I saw they had removed all the handicap parking spots and I had to park farther away. Being a medical center, these issues need serious addressing.

I know a family with the last name Kiefer. One of the children is named Byron. When I clicked on the map to see the location I zoomed in and noticed that a street running next to the 'hospital' is named Byron St. I am intrigued. I wonder about this family that is 'up north' and what relationship if any they have to the original founders. I was looking at Michigan locations on asylumprojects.org and the map location brought me to Yelp. As every Detroiter probably now knows, the damn roof caved in because the city hired contractors to repaint areas that had suffered acute water damage but didn't bother to fix the underlyng structural issue first so that more water leaked in and finally brought the roof down into the nice, freshly-painted offices they just renovated. Fail. And a pity, seriously, because this building could be a great, historic, renovated and re-purposed facility if the money and drive to do such could be found. As it is, it will probably linger on housing city/county workers until there's a really dreadful accident or it just becomes unfit for anything but rodents. Then it will probably be abandoned. During my first appointment with Marna Taylor, she ordered bloodwork, prescribed medication for the oral thrush, and recommended physical therapy. I also mentioned concerns about acne, and she told me it was completely normal for my age and that I was probably perimenopausal. At my second appointment, I explained that the medication for my tongue had not worked. She prescribed a higher dose of the same medication. I also mentioned that physical therapy was not covered by my insurance and that I had researched the possibility of a gluten reaction. She agreed that sounded plausible. The appointment then shifted into a discussion about my health insurance premiums and coverage. I explained that I had marketplace insurance at the time because I was a freelance writer, and that I was comfortable with my monthly premium and willing to pay out of pocket if needed. Despite that, she told me she could not order additional thyroid bloodwork unless I personally called my insurance company, gathered all the billing codes, and found the prices for each test. She then ended the appointment, saying I was late, even though I had arrived on time. On the drive home, I realized she had never even reviewed my bloodwork results with me, which was the main reason for the visit. When I later checked the portal myself, I saw abnormal levels. When I went to refill the prescription she had given me, the pharmacist pulled me aside and said he was concerned it may have been prescribed incorrectly because the dosage was extremely high and aggressive. He advised me to call and confirm it. At that point, I decided not to continue care here. I later paid out of pocket for bloodwork from Function Health, which showed significant thyroid issues. I then found a new doctor who told me it was preposterous to suggest I was likely perimenopausal at 34 without proper evaluation, and I have since been receiving treatment for my thyroid condition. This experience felt dismissive, unhelpful, and poorly managed. I would not recommend wasting your time or money here.

She seems to have a vested interest not only in physical but mental health and a really great approach to both. Which is awesome! That's as far as it goes. They charged (and were in network, according to my health care website) just under $500 for an initial visit. $190 of which was covered by my insurance. You do the math - yep I'm on the hook for $310. Why. I was also sent to Karamanos for a DIAGNOSTIC (we all felt a lump) mammogram (during which they found two more) but there was a mess of a thing on whether I could/should have an ultrasound or not (Karamanos policy is to do so - DMC couldn't seem to get their crap together to decide whether or not to. Thankfully Karamanos is a bit more up on their medical knowledge and just decided to do so. If my billing is through DMC it's probably going to cost another $500 - maybe they'll take a breast as payment? Might work out for the best! I will wholeheartedly recommend Karamanos. They were fantastic. As for Ebony Harpool and DMC? That's a racket and I'm actively looking for primary care physician who's not a complete extortionist and whose staff are marginally competent. Dr. Harpool, I believe is mostly great but the staff, follow-up and detail in this office leave way too much to be desired. Disappointing, really. I liked them personally.
