Andy runs an organized, knowledgeable, experienced shop on the level of the great shops in Jackson, Wyoming and Livingston. I went there to take a casting lesson and Andy, with practical experience coupled with Joan Wulff's instructor course, immediately saw a place to improve my stroke. He was positive. He provided an immediate insight which got me an additional 30 feet on a 'tight' cast. We then discussed reels and fishing the Farmington River. Andy's approach was low key and practical and his prices are right. He is fully equipped with name-brand shirts and clothing, fly fishing necessities and wisdom. I've been shopping at Concord Outfitters since I moved to the greater Boston area, and have come to believe that this shop is one of the best in New England. The owner Andy is a great guy, his staff are knowledgable, they are generous with their time, they have a good retail selection, including lots of his and hers clothing. They've always been willing to do a special order for me, as well. I've also attended some fly tying classes, some lectures, and other events at the shop. They do a good job of cultivating a good community around the shop. I've yet to attend one of their trips, but hope to one day. read more

Ambience and I have mentioned this in many of my reviews for restaurants but can you have this factor in a retail store. Well a fly shop must have ambience. Think there is ambience at Dick's Sporting goods....nope. They try at Bass Pro but it is all glitz. You need professionals who fish all the time to give you the necessary advice to catch trout and stripers. I look at supporting your local fly shop or any town store as well a responsibility to the merchant. If the quality is good the prices fair why go on-line or all the way to Foxboro. Think of this outfitter as your local pro shop at the country club. Fly selection is perfect for NE waters both sweet and salt. I've purchased flies here that have saved the day in Great Exuma when the bones wanted nothing other that gold eyes and a pink pattern. Andy knows his stuff and it shows when you ask "if he's been fishing." I've purchased 4 fly rods, Abel reels and Christmas gifts for many. So very cool place, the Patagonia selection is good and they will order anything you need from the catalogue. Parking...sneak behind the store or walk up from the Post Office. read more

Extremely helpful owner sought me out to help me after I was just starting to feel purposefully ignored by a younger make staff person who was in no hurry to quite slowly help a make customer. I waited patiently and Ute as rewarded by the manager or owner. He was beyond attentive I've been a woman fly fisher for 30 years and he gave me a refresher course on sone knots I'd forgotten. There are so many issues I am not even sure where to begin. For starters, the clothing selection is minimal and incredibly overpriced. The customer service is seriously lacking, and the owner is very disorganized in terms of paperwork and administrative business. Additionally, there is a massive lack of respect from the owner towards anyone who is not as economically well off as he is. His entitled attitude and superiority complex makes it difficult to want to support this business, which seems to be on the outs anyway, as it looked quite run-down last time I was there. I would not recommend this store and would save a lot of time, money, and respect for myself by taking my business elsewhere. read more

I am rather new to fly fishing. So why not take a class on tying flies! Last night's three hour beginners' course was really great. Dave Skok covered everything a beginner needs to know and more. Class was limited to six people which ensured we all received the one-on-one time we needed. We all tied three different flies which covered most of the different materials and skills we will need to continue on our own. The shop is gorgeous and the rest of the staff are friendly. Concord Outfitters is an excellent shop with a very knowledgeable and approachable staff. They have a TON of technical fly fishing gear to outfit you for any species you want to target. Most importantly their guidance for beginners helps defray the perception that flyfishing is a highly specialized sport that takes years to master. They have plenty of different after hours programs such as fly-tying, both beginner and advanced, and flyfishing destination slideshows where you can learn a lot about the sport and fishing opportunities around the globe. At these different events you can network with many other friendly, local fishermen who bring their experience into the shop. Outside of fishing they have a large inventory of casual and outdoor clothing that non-anglers would also be interested in. I have picked up many popular gifts for my wife and kids from the shop over the years. There always seems to be something new in the shop to check out, so I go there frequently. Based on the reviews I came to gear up for some local fishing, but the doors were locked at 3:40 PM on a Monday, with no sign saying when they would re-open or why they were closed. Posted store hours said they should be open until 6:00 PM! What gives!? read more

Excellent customer service and product knowledge. I needed bugproof pants and someone at the shop offered to order a couple sizes for me to try so I then bought a pair. Also, when I needed a true waterproof hat, someone knew what brand was waterproof. I'm a mountaineer and trust only certain brands. Pleased to discover this shop. read more

This is a beautiful store with knowledgeable, friendly staff who really know their fly fishing and gear. The ambience is terrific and it is a great place to learn about, and discuss, fly fishing with staff and other customers. However, the store is pricey and a bit disorganized (they often don't follow through on placing orders for out of stock items or contacting me when they arrive, etc.). I recently purchased an expensive coat there and found it online later that day for over $100 less. When I returned the item the next day, the owner actually followed me out of the store and confronted me. He was upset that I did not pay his price despite the fact I have spent well over $1000 in his store previously. I prefer to patronize and support local businesses. However, with Cabela's and Natick Outdoor store close by and their lower prices on many items, I won't shop again at a store that does not appreciate my business, expects me to pay significantly more for items, then gets upset when I don't. read more
