I booked an appt asking for someone who could do pixies. I came prepared with photos of the cut and colour I wanted but did NOT get what I asked for. She cut my sides and bangs VERY short, nothing like what I SHOWED her I wanted. I told her I wanted something feminine, hair on the sides I could sweep forward, and even showed her a past photo of when my bangs had been butchered (I told her I feel anxious every time I come to the salon because of awful cuts I've received like it) and she went ahead and cut them too short anyway saying that we would start with that and could always cut them shorter if I wanted. I showed her photos of what I thought was feminine vs young and funky. I did NOT get feminine. (I'm also 50!) I asked that my highlights not be spikey, I showed her a photo with more chunks, but was given spikey - and a copper colour, not the auburn I asked for. I returned a few days later to ask her to shave the sides and back one shorter so there was contrast between the top and sides. I felt the need to talk to her about how upset I was. While talking I told her that I was very disappointed with my cut and that it wasn't what I asked for. She agreed with me that 1) my head was an odd shape now with this cut 2) that it was NOT going to grow out nicely (another thing I told her was important to me and after two weeks it is already sprouting up in odd spots), 3) to keep my cowlick in mind (big hole there now that she agreed was hard to deal with) and 4) I should probably see a barber next time instead of going to a salon because they would be more qualified with a cut like this. With tip (that I absolutely regret paying) I paid over $250 for this. She seemed nervous during the cut, she didn't show me the sides or back with a mirror so I didn't realize how bad it was until I got home, and when you go to pay and the guy at the counter can't muster up a "you look great!" (despite what he thinks), it makes you feel awful. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning. She couldn't even offer the slightest apology. read more

I booked a Shellac Manicure and Signature Pedicure for my sister's birthday. I was very excited because the place looks so fancy and professional and they also provide these fun, tropical looking drinks! However, the shellac nails did not even last 24 hours! They started peeling off (which I believe is very unusual for gel) after she woke up the next day and are half gone. We called Concrete Blonde and they said the could get us in after 4 days for a fix. The person we spoke to did not apologize even after I expressed that we are in Edmonton and this meant an unnecessary, long commute. We asked if we could come in sooner because the peeling nails get caught in things and look very shabby. We were told they couldn't do anything and only after pushing for it received what felt like a reluctant, half hearted 'yeah, sorry'. When we went all the way back to get it fixed they remained very apathetic and did not express any apology for this ridiculous situation. Overall, the customer service after the peeling was very poor. Do NOT get shellac from here - just go to a typical Asian nail salon. Not worth the price. read more

You're probably reading this review because your inbetween hair dressers or curious about making a change. Kristen is the right choice for a variety of reasons, let me count the ways.... Listens to what your looking for, gives you the truth as to if/ how she can make it possible, goes over and above to ensure you walk out the door feeling pampered and cared for. Even for weeks to come. I say this because it's how she makes me feel everytime. It's been about a year and a half now with countless hours in the chair while she's behind it. I look for a change almost everytime I go see her but what doesn't change and will not is my hair dresser Kristen. With her knowledge, expertise and passion for hair, I know I'm in the best of hands. Only takes one visit and you'll see what I mean! Example. Many people ask me, 'how often do you get your hair done?' and 'do you touch it up yourself?'. This particular dye job was just before my hair dresser gave birth. We knew I wouldn't be seeing her for a few months therefore went with one colour so I could touch it up easily (if I needed to). What you see is a 3.5month progression using salon shampoo and conditioner whilst rinsing in cold water. Last few weeks using purple conditioner to avoid going brassy on my ends. I did NOT 'touch it up' in any fashion. When Kristen did my hair the root was more saturated than the ends, hence the fade. With every cold water shower my hair would fade, as the story goes. For those of you who want fun vibrant colors my suggestion go for a more rich look initially, invest in salon products and rise in cold water. Obviously results are different for everyone but over the years and many colors later, the fade out is enviable so you might as well embrace it. It's easy to embrace is when you've discovered the most important piece in the equation, a hairdresser like Kristen . Who possesses the skill and knowledge to lay an amazing foundation. I bought a groupon main/pedi. What a waste of money, I honestly would have had a better experience at those typical Asian nail spas. My manicure is all chunky and has so many dents in the polish. The nails were not cleaned underneath and I can feel dead skin/nail from the filing. It's gross. The pedicure... the aesthetician barely spoke to me and I felt awkward the whole time. I adore my hair stylist over there! Nick did my hair yesterday and Ive never had anyone so specific about what we were capable of getting (I have turquoise ombré hair) he explains everything throughly and spends lots of time making sure I was happy. I really appreciate a stylist with opinions on my hair, I always figure they are the experts who know what they are doing and Nick definitely is. The fresh muffins every day are a nice touch, the desk is very friendly too bringing anything from water to coffee. I went in for the groupon deal for mani/pedi and was very pleasantly surprised! The salon is easy to miss from the outside, but as soon as you step in it is beautiful! Everyone I dealt with was extremely friendly. The manicure and pedicure were great! I got regular polish on the toes, and shellac on the nails and both lasted longer than average. The girl (sorry I forget her name now!) was very nice and easy to talk to. The materials used were all very clean and the chair comfortable! Definitely recommend, would be great for a few girls going in a group as the mani pedi room is separate from the salon side. read more

I booked an appointment with Nick after getting some recommendations on Facebook. I looked him up and saw that he does great color jobs. So I treated myself to a cut and color. I have been coloring my own hair for 10 years. The fresh muffins were a little odd (everything was in them) but very good. I got the exact cut I wanted and Nick was great and funny. My hair color is similar to what I normally wear but it was the first time he did my hair and didn't want to fry it or turn it green. Next time maybe we will try something a little bolder. I will definitely go back to Nick. The only thing I didn't like was when I first walked in I didn't see the front desk. No one was there to say hi and I was a little lost on where to go. read more

Took my daughter here for an eyebrow wax. What a hidden gem! It's absolutely beautiful in there and the staff were very friendly. I booked with Concrete Blonde on a whim as my stylist booked up for the entire holiday season. I called on a Friday for a Saturday appt. knowing that they would likely think I'm crazy for attempting to get in (even I thought so with all the great reviews here). The receptionist was very polite and kindly fit me in. When I arrived the receptionist proved to be even sweeter, I felt very comfortable and was greeted right away. It is a gorgeous salon with trendy interior and a curated style throughout. Lots of my favourite products and brands on the shelves. My stylist was on time, although I completely forget her name and will update as soon as I remember. She gave me exactly what I wanted. It was a fraction of the cost of what I normally pay at salons, just under $70 for a few inches off my chest length thick blonde hair and a tone. She even added curls in at the end. Normally I pay a lot more for this service, I was pleasantly surprised! Not a single complaint. If I wasn't loyal to my stylist already I would be going back. Although it is a trendy bustling place and every stylist is stylish (hah!) you are treated with respect unlike other trendy salons where you often read reviews about guests feeling out of place. I did not get any uncomfortable vibes or feel pressured/unvalued. Highly recommend! read more

I purchased a groupon because $200 for a haircut and color isnt an option. The groupon was $109(plus $12 chemical fee?) Nicole was my stylist. She was nice but i feel that if you are advertising on groupon to bring in more clients you should not be putting these clients with less inexperienced stylists. For example, I showed nicole a couple of pictures of long black hair with some great pops of color. My hair is long and black, i wanted it to remain long and black with a trim and some vibrant colors throughout. No problem according to her. She chose to do a purple near the roots and fade out to hot pink! Great this sounds awesome! Im totally on board, i said to her that i was also prepared to spend a bit more than what the groupon was if need be. She said it probably would be necessary. Cool! Anyway as we are nearing the end, she discovers that she missed a part of the bleached section at the top of my head so thats visible and not colored (its blonde/coppery) the color came out nice but hardly visible, their simply wasnt enough sections of color done (compared to the pictures i showed her) She attempted to curl my hair after me saying it will not curl unless youre using hairspray and pins to keep them in place until they cool. Didnt bother her, she did it anyway without product and after i left i had to go home and straighten it out again because it was full of kinks from the straight iron she used to curl with. Just so happened to be on the day of husbands and his fathers birthday party! She burned the base of my neck on the first curl! Hurt for 2 days later!! The right side is also longer by at least half an inch. And now that its been 4-5 days since my apt all the "hot pink" is no longer visible and it's taken on the darkness of the black color she used. I suspect its probably something to do with her choice in using a demi-permanent black which bled into the vibrant color because now its coppery and looks nothing like what i showed her! In short, my hair looks just as bad as it did before the apt and im out $141 and my trust in hair stylists is no longer existent after this read more

I had my hair done by Nicole Z. at Concrete Blonde and had to get it fixed a few days later. I asked for caramel balayage and basically got random orange streaks that started bluntly in the middle of my hair. As soon as I got home to investigate I was shocked to see the terrible job. I immediately e-mailed the owner, along with pictures, who graciously re-booked me with another stylist to fix the mess. My hair was fixed and looked much better at the time, but it quickly faded into a nasty burnt orange color after a few weeks. I ended up going to a whole other salon to get my hair dyed back to brown and will not be trying the "balayage" look ever again. I purchased a Mani/Pedi Groupon package for $60. Such a great deal. They don't soak your fingers before your mani but other than that it was a great experience. The salon is clean, professional and relaxing. The girl who did my nails was lovely and professional. The owner of this business is very dishonest. They put ad in groupon 89$ for hair color and cut. I phoned them and confirmed the price with the owner. When we went there after 30 min of driving from Edmonton in very snowy day and they changed their word and asked to pay 79$ dollar on top of the groupon price. Owner is very rude. He said that 'I am the owner and I made the rule and you have to pay whatever I give u the quote.' I asked him why they put fake price in the groupon. He did not answer. I had a mani and pedi done. The people were nice, massage chairs were nice, atmosphere great but the quality of work was so poor. I could have done a much better job. I tried to make hints but they were ignored or brushed off. I paid a discounted Groupon price and I still feel like I wasted my money. Didn't buff my nails, thinnest shellac that has peeled up already, horrible cuticles, didn't even fully clean underneath my nails, tried to cover the job with lots of oil. My heels still have major calluses and are ruff. I wasn't given a base coat on my toes so my nails will be a lovely yellow colour when it's off and there was paint all over the skin of the toes. Absolutely horrible - go for the massage chairs if you must but not the quality. read more

I purchased a groupon for full highlights and a cut, went in for my appt and told her I wanted to go blonde, I have light brown hair with ombré blonde ends so I knew it wouldn't be hard to achieve. I have also gotten full highlights at another salon before and my hair was a beautiful blonde. As she was blow drying my hair I kept thinking to myself it will lighten up once it dries. When my hair is fully dry I look at it and see maybe 10 pin stripe blonde highlights. My before and after pictures look the same I pretty much got a glorified haircut. They fry your hair and they don't care. Please keep in mind I never write reviews, but this place was so SO bad I feel I need to warn someone. I went in to get a cut and partial highlights a few months ago.They were very quick to book me in but when I arrived, I waited quite some time to start my appointment. When we started, the stylist explained how I needed to spend another 40$ to get some products that would save my hair from the damaging highlights. Being on a tight budget, I had to decline. I do regret it because my hair is now damaged and breaking, and takes me 25 minutes to detangle every time I wash and comb it. Also, while the highlights were in, my stylist told me I had five more minutes left but then was wrapped up in conversation with other stylists that she didn't get me to come to the wash station until 20 minutes later. I was horrified at how long it all took, how unnatural my high lights looked, and or course the additional 12$ chemical fee! On top of it all, she did not style it after at all. Just a straight blow dry and sent me on my way. I was very disappointed with Concrete Blonde and now my hair is completely wrecked. It has been two months now of me trying to wash and comb through fried and damaged hair and each time I curse Concrete Blonde. To top it off, I emailed them to express my dissatisfaction, which then they offered to book me in for a fix. When I tried to set up the appointment (twice) there was no response. Read some reviews on Facebook and they said this was a great place. I book an appointment. Two hours before said appointment I get a call saying the stylist I'm booked with called in sick. They said they can get me in the same evening with a different stylist.. I ask if she's been cutting hair for a while, they tell me she's the owner and she's good. After getting a shampoo with ICE COLD water, she cuts my hair... I pay 57 dollars... 57 DOLLARS (for literally a straight across cut; no layers, nothing fancy) PLUS a 10 dollar tip and I go home. Looking in the mirror I notice the left side is about an inch longer than the right side. I call back to the salon and they say I can come back and get it fixed free of charge. (damn rights it should be free) Once again I ask if this other stylist has been cutting hair for a while and if she can do a good job... "yes, she's also an owner and "master stylist" go in.. she starts cutting my hair and asks ME if it looks straight... I stand up "nope, the left side is still longer" *trims more* "how about now?" *stand up* "I can't even tell at this point, maybe get a second opinion" She asks her co-worker... he verifies that it is still uneven.... I keep telling the stylist how horrible my experience has been, how I will never return here and all she says is "I'm sorry" So after leaving unhappy - AGAIN.. I get home and not only is my hair 4/5 inches shorter than I originally wanted after 2 horrible cuts, it is choppy and still uneven. Not as bad as it was, but none the less... I am not happy. I called to talk to a manager... and the only ones I can talk to are the owners, and they were the ones that cut my hair. Thanks. read more
