BBQ is a gem of the American countryside dining. Partially, because the only other alternative is…read moretypically fast food. But, that would not be a fair description of this tradition: BBQ is an incredible style of cooking and spots like this represent this tradition well. BBQ 65 is conveniently located right off the interstate in a gas station in a saloon like building that has a beautiful character from the outside. Open since 2010s, this spot has started to earn its place in the BBQ world, albeit being newer to it. There is an indoor seating inside near the gas station shop aisles. The ribs are cooked well with a nice wood profile, but neither very delicate nor particularly notable for their flavor of the meat itself, with smoke notes dominating. The quality of pork itself and the slightly tougher preparation could be better to rival Alabama's best. The BBQ sauce is loaded up with vinegar, completely overpowering the meat if consumed together, although to be fair, this may be a matter of preference for some BBQ lovers. The star of the show is potato salad which was perfectly balanced on its acidity, sweetness and overall flavor. As a whole, BBQ 65 is a pleasant stop to experience some traditional southern cooking and support a local business instead of tossing money into another "by the exit" fast food chain.

It's a family run business, and the Sessions family is the family behind Conecuh. The Sessions have been making Conecuh pork sausage over a hickory fire in Evergreen Alabama since 1947. They use the original family recipe to this day and now, Conecuh offers six varieties of sausage including Cajun, Spicy and Hot, and All Natural Hickory Smoked with no MSG or added nitrates. Evergreen is located in Conecuh County, Alabama. in 2015, the Conecuh company produced between 30,000-40,000 pounds of sausage each day! Wow! Well done, Conecuh! As an Alabamian, Conecuh is most delicious in a shrimp and grits dish! I agree with Yelper Friend John M. that Conecuh sausage does "have a great snap when you bite into it and the flavor is outstanding!" Here in North Alabama, Conecuh products are readily available at Publix, Kroger, Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, Star Super Market, and other grocery stores! Conecuh meats, gift items (t-shirts, magnets, yard flags, etc.), and spices are also available on Amazon. It is a huge menu bolster in Alabama if the restaurant's chef adds "Conecuh" to the description of a menu item! Thanks for the deliciousness, Conecuh!

They also have a lot of souvenirs and swag to buy as well as rubs and sauces. Next time we're on our way down to Florida, we'll stop in and grab some sausages to grill up. The store was very clean and reminded me a lot of Buc-ees. I'd definitely recommend stopping in if you're looking for something different from your average gas station stop during the middle of your roadtrip.

The end....well, let's not be too hasty. For locals, the jury seems to say thumbs up, but for us the thumbs are mostly horizontal or down. Plenty of parking. Delightful smoky aroma surrounds the building and continues inside this rustic-looking building (painted battleship gray on the outside...but cabinesque inside. Orderd at the counter...and prompt service followed. The pulled chicken had a lightly smoked flavor that I enjoyed, but that was it...it was simply too dry. The pulled pork was similarly dry and even the addition of what I assumed was house -made sauce (ketchup-vinegar--devoid of spices) didn't help. (Caveat - we got there near the end of the day, so maybe the meats sat in the warmer/smoker too long? If so, our bad.) A skinny, crispy-skinned sausage was the star for me. I asked the host what kind it was (assuming it might be Conecuh. But she couldn't tell me who made it except "some company in Andalusia." Nevertheless, nameless as it was, the sausage was definitely the best thing on the plate. Baked beans looked good - thick with lots of little strands of meat (I think) but lacking any distinctive flavor. Collard greens were tender but lo-taste as well. Slaw was really chunky - not shredded - and lackluster. Mac and cheese was good...(and ended up being the only thing my wife finished on the plate.) Three draft beers on tap. Well, that is, three taps but only one beer to sell - Genessee Light. I watched as the bartender poured it, but it had so much head, he actually had to spoon the foam repeatedly off the top before he got a glassful. Cold but .....well, just cold. Finally as a parting observation. At least two different ketchups on the tables: Del Monte & some generic or food service brand like White House (couldnot read the label). Other add-on sauces? One bottle at the cash register of PF Chang's pepper sauce...and one bottle of chipotle hot sauce with a green label. The contents were so dark I couldn't tell what it was. I tried the Trappey's pepper vinegar and it too was well.... let's just say that's all for tonight. Please give Bush's BBQ a try....I'm only one reviewer and you might fare better.

I've tried the chicken, the pulled pork and the smoked conecuh sausage and I can never decide which to get, so typically I'll just get the 3 meat plate, order all of them, and take a ton of leftovers to munch on the next day. The meats are good enough that you don't need to drown them in sauce. The people are super friendly and accommodating. The place is clean and has plenty of seating as well as a drive thru in case you want to call it in and pick it up in a hurry. Overall a solid spot that won't disappoint. If you're in the area and considering it, go ahead and give them a try.

Our order--which included 40 wings, 2 drinks, and 2 quarts of sides--totaled $78. The food was a hit! My parents especially loved the wings, noting that they are a good, substantial size. The side dishes were mostly well-received: my stepdad enjoyed both the baked beans and potato salad, while my mother loved the baked beans but wasn't a fan of the potato salad. Customer service was great over the phone, and the order was ready in just 25 minutes. A solid choice for takeout!

I ordered a cheeseburger, onion rings, and a Diet Coke. When the plates arrived, I noticed that the bun was huge, but the burgers were small. If they were going to use such small burger patties, I think that they should have used small buns. The burger was good, but had lots of useless bun around it. I tore the bun off and left it on my plate. The onion rings were good, but not plentiful. I think that I had 6 or 7 onion rings. My husband's burger was the same as mine, huge bun and small beef patty. He had French fries, and I think that there were only 7-8 small fries on his plate. The drinks that we were served were in large cups with plenty of ice and were delicious. The dining room looked dark and dusty. Perhaps a fresh coat of paint and a good scrubbing would make the restaurant more appealing. We were sitting at a booth when a man came out from the kitchen. He started talking to the couple who was seated behind us. He was loud, crude, every other word was a curse word, and was generally obnoxious! He wanted to be noticed, and he was! He stood behind our booth talking about motorcycles for more than 15 minutes! The couple that he was talking to thought every thing that he said was funny. My husband and I DID NOT. Someone who was from that business should have told him to sit down, be quieter, and to not curse! This was our first and our last visit to Golden Rule Bar-Be-Que!
