BBQ is a gem of the American countryside dining. Partially, because the only other alternative is typically fast food. But, that would not be a fair description of this tradition: BBQ is an incredible style of cooking and spots like this represent this tradition well. BBQ 65 is conveniently located right off the interstate in a gas station in a saloon like building that has a beautiful character from the outside. Open since 2010s, this spot has started to earn its place in the BBQ world, albeit being newer to it. There is an indoor seating inside near the gas station shop aisles. The ribs are cooked well with a nice wood profile, but neither very delicate nor particularly notable for their flavor of the meat itself, with smoke notes dominating. The quality of pork itself and the slightly tougher preparation could be better to rival Alabama's best. The BBQ sauce is loaded up with vinegar, completely overpowering the meat if consumed together, although to be fair, this may be a matter of preference for some BBQ lovers. The star of the show is potato salad which was perfectly balanced on its acidity, sweetness and overall flavor. As a whole, BBQ 65 is a pleasant stop to experience some traditional southern cooking and support a local business instead of tossing money into another "by the exit" fast food chain. read more

This place is legit! Yes, it has a humble setting in a gas station, but the place is clean with a feeling of warmth. The staff is very friendly. You order at the counter and they have several items on their menu. I was here for lunch and had my meal 5 minutes after ordering. A lot of people got to-go orders, but I dined inside. They have seating for apx 30 people. I went with the pulled pork plate. The pork was moist and delicious. For the sides I had the baked beans (awesome flavor), coleslaw (fresh & excellent), and an extra side tater tot casserole (hearty and tasty). Just off the highway, nestled in part of a gas station, is this southern barbeque restaurant. Now, its it in a gas station, but don't let that fool you on the tastiness of the food. One of my favorite dishes was actually the coleslaw. How, one of the better ones I have had. I had the bbq ribs, baked beans and the coleslaw. I got the 6 bone, but could have been fine with the 4. For several years, I had been given several reasons not to try BBQ 65. Those reasons included it's not good, it's in a gas station, they have packets of BBQ sauce and and it turned out they were all lies except the gas station part. UT is in a gas station but they have a counter and a seating area to eat. I went with the pulled pork plate and this pulled pork was phenomenal! It was really tender and it paired well with the 2 sauces on the table. They have a tangy mild tomato vinegar and equally tangy white sauce. I was skeptical because I had seen a photo of a pork plate with a pack of Sweet Baby Ray's. They do have those packets but the sauces on the table are so much better. I went with mayo slaw and Mac and cheese as my sides. The slaw was really creamy and semi-sweet. The mac and cheese was homemade but on the dry side. Sweet tea was Alabama extra sweet! My pork plate came with a drink for a total of $14. This pulled pork was phenomenal though and I would stop there again in a heartbeat for it. They do have chicken and ribs, no brisket. read more

I've never been so impressed by gas station BBQ. The ladies that work their are super sweet and helpful. I got the smoked Turkey and white Sauce sandwich. So good! My husband got the pulled pork sandwich and squash casserole. The casserole is some of the best I've ever had and the bbq is good too. For dessert you have to get the banana pudding! It's a walk up and order, seat yourself establishment. It was very clean and smelled so yummy! The staff were friendly and took care of us quickly. The fall off the bone ribs were off the chain! Solid stop convenient to i65. I was not expecting it to be in a gas station but the atmosphere was great for a short stop off the interstate. The service was great. Expect a line. We had the pork plate, ribs, and chicken plate. The Lima beans and collards were very good, very greasy due to the large amounts of bacon which is true to the southern way of cooking them. The potato salad and slaw were so so. Just not a lot of flavor. The chicken skin was amazing, wished all of the chicken had the flavor but it didn't. Still a solid meal though. The pork was just ok. Easily the best smoked chicken I've ever had. So juicy with a perfect amount of spices, but not overly salty like most places. Mac and cheese was excellent too, thick and creamy with a lot of flavor. Sliced turkey was very good as well but had a slightly harsh smoke flavor. Juicy and good flavor over all though. What a great surprise to find this place right off the side of the interstate! It's literally a gas station with a cute little BBQ shop inside. It was fairly crowded when we got there around lunch time, so obviously the word is out that the food is great! I highly recommend the chicken plate. I usually order pulled pork at BBQ restaurants but I noticed the photos of the chicken platter and thought it looked really good, and it WAS! Some of the best smoked chicken I've ever had. It was a half chicken, and the plate was huge!! Portion sizes are large here. Trust the photos, they look great, it is great! Not sure why this place is so highly rated. First off, the location is convenient right off the highway, but in the same building as a gas station convenience store makes the whole experience feel half baked and crowded. Second, the ordering experience was terrible. The low contrast chalk and terrible cursive handwriting they use on the blackboard made it incredibly difficult to read the menu. Also, the cashier was mad at life and clearly didn't want to be there and spoke under her breath making it difficult to hear her. Third, the food was mediocre at best. I make better ribs at home in my pitiful smoker. The chicken and pulled pork was OK. Most every side option was a heart-stopping greasy mess, except for the potato salad which had nothing interesting going for it. Our family didn't hit the whole menu, but at least 50% and I tried a bite of everything. We found this place after a random search on our road trip back home. The bbq food store is in a cute gas station. The place is clean and has 6-7 tables to sit and enjoy the food. And a couple picnic tables outside. We ordered the ribs 6 bones platter with fried green tomatoes and mac n cheese, and 10 chicken wings platter with collards and sausage with cabbage. The ribs were smaller than I thought they would be. The meat fell off the bone and the smoke flavor had a subtle cherry flavor. The wings had a rub on them that also had a sweet flavor. Always on the lookout for a 4 star hole-in-the-wall (no disrespect intended), we found this gem less than a hundred yards off of I-65 near Greenville, AL about 40 minutes south of Montgomery. Now don't giggle, it's located on Pineapple Highway....unless you spell it like the Alabama DOT, then it's Pine Apple. Regardless of how you "spel it," this is a great find. The store front is an old-time false-facade building with gas pumps in front and a convenience store inside. We arrived in the pouring rain and were glad to get inside, only to find, to our bemusement, that it was kinda raining inside also. The roof leaked literally throughout the store and restaurant. I felt that just added to the rustic charm. As for the Barbecue....spot on delish! We tried the pulled pork and found it to be tender, moist, and flavorful with a nice smoke ring throughout the heaping portions we were served. The wings were smoky-smoky good, also tender and moist. Sauce selections were pretty common, but nicely seasoned nonetheless. Sides were traditional for the most part, the "Loaded Potato Casserole" a brightly seasoned mish-mash of creamy and lumpy spuds mixed with herbs and spices along with what appeared to be some slender, choice pieces of meat; heavy but yummy. They serve both vinegar slaw and mayo-creamy slaw. They have a reasonably priced kids menu too. We will definitely be back since we travel this route frequently. And we are looking forward to trying the Ribs, Turkey and some of the other daily delicacies they serve....rain or shine. read more

Don't let this little place fool you. It's disguised as a Exxon gas station, but the BBQ here is so good and the staff is warm and friendly even though they are busy. Food comes out relatively quick and it's hot and ready to eat. They have paper towels, bbq sauce, and hot chili pepper sauce on the tables. I got the rib/chicken combo plate. 3 juicy melt in your mouth ribs and almost a half of chicken. Breast, two wings, and a drumstick that just fell off the bone. It was so flavorful it didn't even need the house made bbq sauce. Typical sides that went well with the meats. Thanks to fellow Yelper Heng T., we found this gem for lunch as a pit stop to the beach from Atlanta. You order at the counter before you seat yourself. Thanks to recommendations from other Yelpers, I knew to order the smoked chicken platter. It came with two sides and a drink, so I also got the fried okra and the mac and cheese. All this for $10.99! The smoked chicken is, 1. A lot l, and 2. Omg so good. The chicken was tender, and, well. Smoked. It was flavorful and tasty with the white sauce. Note that extra white sauce will cost extra. I liked how the okra wasn't sliced, but was a whole fried okra. It didn't seem as slimy, as okra can be, as a result, but maybe that was just me. The mac and cheese was just ok compared to the other components of my platter, but delicious all the same. I also had to splurge and order the fried pecan pie. While it was delicious and not overly sweet, I just wish I could have gotten it a la mode! I also got to taste the bread pudding my friend ordered, which was a good bread pudding, but a little sweet for my tastes. Hidden in a gas station just outside Montgomery is this little shack. The ribs are great, chicken is average. Pulled pork was mush and disappointing. Baked beans had a a little meat in there m but had a full flavor. Mac n cheese was just sitting in a pool of grease/oil. Fast service and nice people make the place welcoming. I stopped here on my way to Birmingham from Mobile and was so glad I did. I will be making this a regular stop whenever I'm in the area. My favorite thing was the squash casserole. Loved it! So upon pulling up to this place I recognized that I have indeed been here before, many years ago when it was the smokehouse. I remember thinking then that this would be a regular stop for me if I was traveling 65 around a meal time. Well, while the smokehouse was good but not a must, this place is a must! As has been pointed out by other reviewers, the chicken was so good! I loved that seasoning on the outside and the white sauce was the perfect addition to that thick juicy breast meat. I really really liked the squash casserole. I stopped it up with my Texas toast. And speaking of Texas toast, I don't know why but this was some phenomenal Texas toast! To round out his meal we had ribs, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. All of my food was good and the left overs were great as my dinner later that night. This is an interesting place. Conveniently located right off I-65, the food line starts at the door of the gas station all the way up to the counter. The BBQ is good and the sides are exceptional offering more than your usual sides. The cashier is a little less than friendly, but she gets the job done having an exception number of customers to get out the door in short order. I had the pulled pork with BBQ baked beans and sweet potato casserole. My one critique concerning my meal is that I believe the pork may have been boiled prior to baking or smoking.
