Cong Caphe located along Bloor St. W. near Howland Ave in the Annex is an international Vietnamese coffee chain that originated in Vietnam. This particular location was the chain's first Toronto location. I've been to their other location on Elm but it was my first time at this location recently. The store is small, with indoor seating for about 20-25 customers, which makes it difficult to find seating during peak times. They also have wifi there are well. I stopped by Cong Caphe on a Wed afternoon. The store was full and staff took up 2 tables at the back of the store as they were doing a photoshoot (perhaps on their drinks and menu items!). The menu is displayed above near the cashier (I didn't even see this until after ordering so I was confused why I didn't see the menu at first). Menu has a variety of Vietnamese drinks as well as sandwiches (banh mi) available. Moreover, there is a display of baked goods and other packaged drinks next to the cashier as well. Service wise, there was only 1-2 staff working and it took about 5 min for my order to be made. I opted to grab the $1 vina brew promo that the coffee shop was having, where it promoted their new brew. My order honestly didn't take much to prepare but 2 others ahead of me had drinks where the staff had to blend which took time. Service was friendly though. Overall, my vina brew tasted decent and strong. The coffee doesn't have any additional dairy or sugar so if you wanted to add anything the store has some milk and sugar near the back of the store. I have been craving and looking for a coconut Vietnamese coffee since I visited Vietnam many years back. Sooo happy to see Cong open in Toronto. I tried the Coconut Coffee Pho, which had more spices in it. Not my favorite but still tasty. Breakfast bahn mi was recommended to us. I'm not a bahn mi fan so it didn't do much for me. Black coffee was nice and strong! The interior is super cute with a nice olden day Vietnam feel. Service was expected and efficient. Paid street parking and in a busy neighborhood. The first time I visited Cộng Cà Phê was in Hanoi. It's a popular Vietnamese coffee shop chain in Vietnam, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this familiar coffee shop name in Toronto! The interior of this location was more modern than the ones I visited in Hanoi, but they tried to incorporate some of the same historical elements (drawing from the French colonial architecture and interior decor). The space has some natural light which makes it great for reading or working. The menu offered some of the popular offerings such as different variations of Vietnamese coffee (both cold and hot) - lattes, coconut coffee smoothie, coconut green rice smoothie, coconut mung bean smoothie, etc. Notice a pattern here? I visited on a Sunday early afternoon for a quick bite and coffee before the Santa Claus Parade. It was my first time at the cafe and was impressed with the design of the space. There's some couch seating up front by the window and some table seating just past the counter where you place and pick up your order. I ordered a latte, a peanut coffee and lemongrass chicken banhmi with a slice of salted egg yolk roll they source from Lala Bakeshop just down the street. I really enjoyed the peanut coffee, it was also a feature item. The banhmmi was delicious and filled with toppings. The salted egg yolk roll was the perfect treat to wrap up this quick meal. On my trip to Toronto and coffee excursion, this cafe and coffee was by far one of the best experiences. The staff is very nice and the space is earthy, quiet, and somehow soothing. White Pho Coffee: 5 out of 5 They have a regular coffee blend and a Pho blend, with the pho blend being the stronger, more herbal blend. I got the white pho, which has a coconut, condensed milk blend with it. The coffee still stands out through the milk blend, though, making this an absolute treat of flavor for people who love flavorful coffee. read more

Thanks to Social media I noticed there was a Cong Caphe grand opening on Elm and they mention the "second location." Therefore, I had a look to see where the first location was and noticed it was on Bloor which was a better location at that time. I ordered the mung bean drink and really enjoyed it. The downside is this place is quite busy which mean it's hard to find a spot to sit down at times. I was unable to find a place and ended up doing take out. Let just say, I love this place alot that I went to the Elm location before my trip back to Calgary. I really hope they open a location in Calgary soon! I need my fix of Cong Caphe!!! read more

This cafe was such a pleasant surprise! The cafe was quite crowded when we showed up around 2pm on a Sunday. Most seats were all full, and there was a surprisingly vast amount of seating. There was a small line to order, but overall it moved fairly quickly and orders were prepared in a reasonable time. The interior is decorated to have such a cozy and intimate "vintage" vibe--reminiscent of Asian street stalls between alleys, but in the best way. The menu is actually quite a good size to offer both variety but not overwhelming choice, all with a pretty fair price point. I tried the coconut coffee, which comes in a slushy-like form. However, it doesn't have the same iciness that a slushy would normally have, it's actually quite smooth with very tiny micro ice crystals. The dose of Vietnamese coffee in this drink balances the light sweetness of the coconut, which results in a very delicious not-to-sweet drink. I would highly recommend trying it, and it's really made me want to try more drinks from Cong Caphe! read more

It was a slush. The service was courteous, but it took a long time to get your order. It may not be easy getting a seat. People stay there a long time, working on their laptops. There is free WiFi. Addicted! Is all I can say. My sister treated me to Cong caphe, and I could not refuse her offer. I got myself the coconut smoothie (coconut slush over Vietnamese coffee). The coconut slush added a creaminess to the coffee. The coffee was not bitter and strong like Vietnamese coffee, and it had the right amount of sweetness without being overly sweet. I'm located all the way in the East end, but I'd trek back out to this spot just for their Cocount Coffee. It's sweet, with a unique flavour that reminds me of cassava cake. I loveeeeed it and I'm going to be thinking about it for a long time. The banh mi is also really tasty, but didn't blow me away as much as the coffee. I had been following this spot on Instagram since hearing about their opening! I went on a Monday morning around 8 am and was the only one there. As a result, I believe I was in-store for about 10+ minutes total from entering and exiting - disclaimer, the one making the drinks was under training. I ordered a medium iced white ($5.45) and a large iced white ($5.85) which is one of their most popular drinks. Though this is a traditional Vietnamese beverage available just about anywhere, they have a unique and interesting take on it. As expected, the coffee itself was strong and aromatic. I personally think that Vietnamese coffee is superior to others due to its unique flavor and this Cong Caphe's roast did not disappoint. I did see the barista frothing my coffee, which resulted in a light and airy drink. My favorite part was the sweetened coconut cream which was very evident and absolutely delicious (if you're someone who enjoys cold foam on your Starbucks, this will likely hit the spot for you). My biggest complaint is that 60% of the cup is crushed ice, which left me feeling like I didn't get enough to drink. I'm curious how their hot version might compare. While waiting, I noticed that they also service cookies of various flavors (which were huge!) and croissants, which were also big in size. A sign showed that they also sell banh mi but it wasn't available at the time I was there. Service was friendly but my interactions were short. When I was handed off my drinks, I was offered a bag which I declined but they had forgotten to give me straws until I inquired. Their straws are compostable which is great and though they are meant to be non-soggy, they snap like dry pasta (quite literally, feels and sounds) which rendered my straw useless when I cracked it while trying to stir my drink midway. The vibes are quite cute with a distinct look. I was surprised by the amount of seating present but I can also imagine how this place would get a little claustrophobic, especially with the dark wood finish which makes it feel even smaller, should it be peak hours. As per your usual downtown expectations, there's only minimal paid parking near this spot. read more

I have been eyeing this spot since before they opened. Admittedly their sandwich board outside with their coconut coffee is enticing. Had absolutely no idea it was their opening week. We waited in line for an hour! Not fun. Then we got into a super crowded business, again, not fun. Twixt two extremes, definitely had my throat act up the morning following. I would say it would be wise to have a capacity limit. It started to feel claustophobic in a few minutes. Not fun. Their decor, while nostalgic, eeh, wasn't all too impressed with. They have these book shelves, made from windows, with a distressed look, stuffed and I mean STUFFED with old books. Probably glued together. They are ugly. I certainly wouldnt wanna be sitting next to that. And yes, as Lee below commented already re. Their employee dress code. I am not at all keen on their uniform being remniscent of a war. Seriously think, internment camps. I understand the entrepreneur who started Công Cà Phê was going for a specific time period in Veitnam history and I truly understand how important one's history (the good, the bad, and the ugly) make a people stronger, resilient and united. However, I don't care to be reminded of a hostile environment when sipping my java. And that army green, eeh. Kinda does that. Again, perhaps they are looking to reclaim it. Idk. To me, ambiance is an essential component to dining out out, even if it is just for a coffee and I cannot say I would care to stay here for any length of time. Didn't get to try their bahn mi sandwhiches as they had sold out right before we got to the cash. I did try their coconut coffee, at first rate I'd give it a 5/10, being generous a 6/10. It got more and more enjoyable as I was sipping at it. The coconut green rice smoothie was communicated to be chewey, similar to mochi, yet that was not at all the case here. It was refreshing and certainly grew in enjoyment once sips with consistent sipping. At first rate a 4/10. If I were to go back I would be open to trying some of their other drinks and their bahn mi. Undoubtedly delicious drinks. My favourite one is the coconut coffee, a uniquely creamy and coconut-y drink that pairs well with their snacks. It does get very busy with rather limited seating, so it's not an ideal place to crack open a laptop to work.
