I knew there was a Vietnamese cafe in the Commerce Gate plaza . This plaza is notorious for having the most packed bubble tea shops in the GTA. We never had a chance to come here to have a cup of coffee. We happened to come here before 10:00 AM. Those tea shops weren't open yet, so we got to enter Phin La . The first impression of their coffee menu is: why does it have so many colors in their drinks? And why are there many ingredients which feel like they shouldn't be in coffee? Banana, ube, sesame, etc. Whatsoever, I recall I ordered the sesame and banana latte. Surprisingly, it had an indescribable but well-mixed flavor. One sip was enough to tell me it was better than any specialty drink at Starbucks. Vietnamese cafes have done some crazy and playful experiments on all kinds of toppings for coffee. Absolutely love this place! There are SO many bbt shops at Commerce Gate but this one definitely stands out. I got the Ube Latte and it was delicious! Service was quick and it's 5% off if you pay by cash. There were 5 people infront of me but my drink only took less than 3 minutes. The viet coffee was strong but the ube balanced out the bitterness of the coffee. No wonder it's one of their top selling drinks! They have some seating area inside and outside the store and the tables were clean. I'll definitely try other drinks next time. read more

Discovered this new coffee shop in Richmond Hill serving up classic & flavoured hot/iced lattes using Vietnamese coffee! I really enjoyed the stronger flavour of their coffee, especially when paired with their flavoured foams (the sea salt one was my favourite!). Would definitely come back. This is more of a grab-and-go spot - there are limited spots to sit and chat. read more

Phin La has great authentic Vietnamese drinks. They are located in the shared building with some other businesses and have a very cute seating area as well as some seating out in the building atrium. Ordering is quick and simple and they have all the classic Vietnamese drinks. Had their Che Thai Durian, it was good, but my personal preference is more durian chunks instead of blended. If you are in the area, stop by for a drink! read more

Stopped by Phin La Coffee after seeing it trending. Drinks are well made and flavorful. The Pistachio Cream Coffee stands out the most -- creamy and indulgent. The Phin Condensed Milk Coffee is strong and gives that classic Vietnamese coffee kick. Ube Matcha Latte is also a fun and tasty combo. Prices are a little high, but you're paying for quality and unique flavors. Worth a visit if you want to try something different! read more

Amazing Vietnamese coffee. They are strong and smooth. I tried their pistachio cream and ube cream and the flavours were delicious and creamy. They both paired extremely well with the boldness of the Vietnamese coffee. The only problem I have is the price. It cost me almost $20 for two small drinks so the price alone would be the only thing that deter me from ordering frequently. read more

I came here on a Saturday afternoon for a sweet treat. I had heard so much about this cafe online, so I was really excited to try it for weeks. The service was fast and friendly and our server had some good recommendations for us to try. I also really appreciated the fact that they had non-caffeinated items on their menu for people who don't drink caffeine. I got the Ube Cream Coffee & my sister got the Banana Cream Coffee, both were pretty good. The cafe itself faces the inside of the business plaza so you need to enter in through the building doors first. Overall, my experience was pretty good, and I'm glad I tried it, but I'm unsure if I will gravitate towards this for my next coffee craving. read more

Banana coffee is made with viet coffee. The default sweetness is perfect, and the coffee is not too sweet. The banana flavour tastes very artificial and may be an acquired taste. I wish there was a space heater in the cafe because sitting by the window in the middle of winter was uncomfortable. There is also seating in the lobby which was so quite cold because it was next to a door. Overall, a cute viet cafe and I would come back to try more! read more

Obsessed is an understatement for me - it's SO GOOD! So excited that this new Vietnamese coffee spot opened and had to check them out. I couldn't decide on what to get so got 3 options to try for myself - and some shared! It's a take out spot with a few seating. Corner unit with lots of lighting. You can get coffee or matcha with different foam toppings. Here's what I got: Banana cream coffee 5/5 - This is definitely my favourite and go to of the three options that I got. Perfectly sweetened with the banana cream top mixed with coffee. Strong banana flavour. Ube cream coffee 5/5 - Not only does the purple ube cream look super vibrant but it also tastes really good with the Viet coffee. Banana matcha latte 4/5 - The banana cream is again really delicious. Matcha was good as well and the pairing is amazing. Overall, after trying it the first time I've been back a couple of times and find myself always thinking about this coffee! read more

Maybe I didn't order the right thing but this was my first time trying this place! Was looking for something different and decided to go for a caffeine free and warm drink! After asking what they offered that could be warm, I went with a Chocolate pistachio. I asked for less sweet and noticed that it wasn't labeled anywhere and assumed the cashier would let her colleagues know. When I tried the drink, it was super sweet and tasted like hot chocolate in a cup with a sprinkle of pistachio on top. I was very disappointed as I paid $9 to drink hot chocolate. Maybe I'll give this a try again (will need some convincing haha) but will go for a cold drink during the summer time. read more

I believe this spot is opened by the same owners of Dak Lak Coffee, which specialized in egg coffee (they also have it on the menu here) Having tried a bunch of their coffee flavours since opening, my fave would be a toss up between the pistachio cream and salted coffee. The banana cream and ube cream were just a tad sweet for my liking. The only one on the roster I still want to try is the sesame coffee. As someone else already pointed out, it would be great if they had a decaf version of their signature drinks so that customers could get them without having to worry about whether they'd be able to fall asleep in the evening! Service is hit or miss. The owner is sociable and good with customers. There is one female staff member here with black hair and tattoos who always looks grouchy when you see her working her shift. Don't bother asking her for recommendations either. You get the vibe she doesn't want to be there. The coffee itself is strong but smooth, lending to a 5 star rating on the quality front. Pricing is high though for the amount you're given and the amount of ice they stuff in the cups (I'd give a 2 star rating for pricing). On overall aggregate, the drink prices drag the overall score down, hence the 4 stars. read more

This place is a tiny shop with some extra spots to sit in the area of the mall just outside the entrance. It is busy and the staff works hard to make each drink to order so we had a little wait but nothing too intolerable. Importantly, these drinks are strong. My friend who prefers coffee over flavoured drinks got the hot one and even she said it was overly strong. My iced banana latte, however, was delicious! The egg cream is the move. Also there are options for matcha lovers as well. It can be a touch expensive - two drinks cost me about $22, though that's somewhat on par with these trendy coffee shops. read more

A friend recommended Phin La for their Vietnamese coffee. They have a variety of flavours like ube, pandan, durian, banana, sesame, pistachio, to name a few. I got the banana cream coffee and it was good. The two paired well together but the banana tasted a little artificial. It was topped with a few dried banana chips on top. The coffee was creamy and sweet. There are some seatings and tables. It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon but we got our drinks fairly quick. Came back for a second visit and this time ordered some of their signature drinks. What was ordered: - Ube Coffee - Banana Coffee - Sesame Coffee Of the three the best were the sesame coffee and then the banana coffee (in that order). The flavour of the black sesame with the coffee gave the drink a nice toasty flavour. The banana was subtle at first but then came across almost artificial. The Ube was really rich. Even mixed with the coffee the drink was a dessert in a cup. Base flavour of the coffee was excellent. read more

Loved Phin La. I am definitely coming back. Ordered the Ube coffee, a pleasant Ube cream topping, sitting on top of viet coffee. I love strong coffee forward drinks, and the Ube cream was super complimentary and flavourful. Only downfall, the lid could use some improvement for those who like to sip it. I find that the hole to sit it was so far from the mouth piece. Came at around 10am on a Friday, not a long line at all. Perhaps a lil more busy on weekends for sure. I highly recommend; I definitely will be coming back. Would love to try their matcha series. read more

Great new addition to the plaza! There are plenty of options to choose from but I went with the banana cream and ube cream coffee. I wasnt sure that I would like the banana cream bc Im just not a fan of artificial banana flavouring. I was really surprised with this one as the flavour balanced really well with the coffee and came through as a more natural taste. The ube cream had a bit more of a nuttier taste but didnt come through as much since it was over powered by the coffee. The barista was friendly and efficient with my order. Theres a small space inside the shop to sit and drink as well as a few small tables outside. Drinks are a bit on the pricier side but would be a nice treat once in a while. Came in so excited because there was so much hype, but to be honest, it was just alright. The prices are pretty typical and expected since the drinks are much more elaborate. The interior was cute, I liked how bright the place was. There was seating not only in the inside, but there were more outside the shop (where the lobby is). When we went there was a short line, and we waited about 25 minutes for 4 drinks. Completely understandable though as we did place a large order. Onto the orders: Ube Matcha Latte- I was so excited to try this drink as the combination sounded perfect. But unfortunately, the matcha flavour did not come through at all. Ube cream coffee- The only drink that we enjoyed. The ube cream, although lacking in ube flavour, it overall paired well with the coffee. Phin condensed milk coffee- We had the expectation that this was going to be nice and strong but found it to be too light in flavour. Pandan Coconut Latte- this was unfortunately our least favourite. Although we mixed well, the pandan syrup, tasted very chemically. Maybe it was because the store had opened moments ago, and they had many customers, but the cashier did not seem like she wanted to engage with us at all. To be honest, after that experience I just felt dismissed. Overall, the menu has a lot of variety and to the ear they sound really good! From what I heard from others they really enjoyed this spot, so maybe it was a one off for us. read more

I love the drinks at Phin La! I've been twice now, and both times I've ordered drinks with the ube foam. SO good. I've ordered the matcha ube latte and the ube coffee. Love how flavourful the ube foam is, and how well it mixed with the matcha and latte. I've ordered a large each time, but the size seems more like a medium to me. I wish it was bigger. Prices are similar to other specialty coffee shops, ranges from $6-8 per drink. There is a 5% cash discount. Service is pretty fast, depending on if there's a long line. Staff are nice. There are a few tables outside the shop to sit, but it's definitely more of a take out coffee shop. read more

We got the ube cream coffee and pistachio cream coffee to try. I tried to sip it before mixing and the ube cream was really thick and sweet so proceeded to stir with a straw and mixed it up. The balance of the strong coffee and the sweet ube cream was really nice. It's definitely a satisfying treat type of drink. Will come back to try other flavors, and also want to try a regular coffee on its own. read more

Is Phin La worth the hype? Yes, if you like strong Viet-styled coffee. I tried to Ube Cream Coffee and Salted Cream Coffee and have to say that you should stick with the traditional flavours such as the Salted Cream. The Ube flavour is lost due to the strong coffee flavour where as the salted cream provides a much needed hint of saltiness to balance off the sweetness. The plaza is filled with bubble tea so this is a nice addition though I wish they have a decafe version so that I can get a drink from them during the evening. read more

This place was highly anticipated and I was so happy I got to try it. Their egg viet coffee was delicious and close to the one I've tried back in Vancouver as well. I got the Ube Matcha latte on ice. The ube was surprisingly not as sweet as I thought, which is a great thing! The matcha was a decent grade and wasn't too milky- which was wonderful! I was very surprised with the flavors because the colors were so out there. I'd definitely get it again! The store didn't have a lot of seating so it's best if you sit outside. The gal who served us was very nice and friendly and told me nicely where the washrooms were as well. Thank you so much for your kindness! I came here during their soft opening and they were offering a discount on the drinks. I had the iced ube latte and damnnn it is good. I usually don't drink coffee so for me it's a treat, but the coffee was perfectly roasty and not overly milky. The ube flavour was A++. Would come back. read more

I bought a couple of buns as a customer since then and I'm hooked! Bun Appetit is located at Commerce Gate. It's located closer to Highway 7. It's around the corner from Kinton Ramen, which I have been to a handful of times during the pandemic to pick up good eats. I found a parking spot steps away from Bun Appetit on a Wednesday evening at around 6:15 pm and backed in to it. It's easier to find parking when it's a weekday, in the afternoon. Bun Appetit's breads are naturally fermented for 168 hours. I liked that all buns and breads are gut-friendly and low on the glycemic index. I'm always interested in lower sugar options. I have sampled these items: - Baguette - Whole wheat walnut vegan bun - Lychee bun - Raisin earl grey bun - Oreo chocolate delight bun - Matcha pistachio pretzel - Whole wheat German pretzel - Yeast loaf with Nutella They were all delicious. They were soft and airy. My favourites were the whole wheat walnut vegan bun and the Oreo chocolate delight bun (also known as the messy hands bun). The former had whole walnuts that were so crunchy and fresh. The bread was chewy and soft. The messy hands bun used dark chocolate. It was also fluffy and soft. It lived up to its name. I had messy fingers just eating a morsel! It has 9 g of sugar, which is practically nothing being fermented. I liked how unique the flavours were. I loved the smell of the lychee bun. I wish it had lychee pieces in it. Instead, it was wine-infused and that flavour overpowered everything. I loved the yeast loaf with Nutella as a dessert option. I nearly picked up a loaf after this event was over! As a parting snack, I got the truffle mushroom one. It was the last one. I love mushrooms. It was super delicious with truffle oil, enoki mushrooms, spinach, garlic, and melted cheeses on top. The bun was soft and perfect. It was such a gourmet bun. I have since returned to get more buns: - Strawberry beetroot - Chocolate arancia The strawberry beetroot bun was fluffy. I decided to cut it in half. To my surprise and joy, it had whole strawberries in it. Wow and yay! I love fruit, but I wasn't expecting so much of it in this bun. I loved it. It was naturally sweet from the strawberries. The beetroot wasn't noticeable in flavour. I feel it added colour to the triangular bun more than anything. The chocolate arancia was equally as unique slicing it in half. This bun had candied orange bits in it. It tasted so good with the chocolate morsels on top and the subtle chocolate flavour in the bun itself. It was delicious. I need to return for more. And I haven't even begun to talk about the flavors. Their signature dish/pastry is the Mont Blanc. It is highly sought after, and often run out before the afternoon. We made a point of going there yesterday, from my partner's birthday to get some special treats. We were not disappointed. Despite being jampacked, as it often is, there was a good supply of the pastries we sought. New to the mix, is their version of a tiramisu. It is off the charts! The pastry chef is truly an artist. If you wish to try possibly the best pastries in the entire GTA, this is the place to go. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. It also pays a call ahead to ensure that you can get the products that you're looking for.

Tried the hot chocolate and it was okay, not too sweet. Tried the Apple turnover which was a little chewy - should have warmed it up just a little. Also got their custard puff and it tasted really good. I loved how pretty their cakes looked but I didn't want to do a takeout so had to skip it.

The shot itself was rich and layered: deep, chocolatey, and nutty striking a really nice balance between bitterness and acidity. It finished with a smooth, almost creamy note that made the whole drink incredibly enjoyable. The only downside is the size-to-price ratio. At around CAD $8.50 for what felt like a 10 oz drink, it's definitely on the pricier side for something that goes down this easily. Still, I'd absolutely come back when I'm in the mood for a more premium coffee experience. (Funny note - the barista and I had a small rant together about how people order "iced cappuccino" and macchiato expecting Starbucks milk sugary drink instead of the "proper" shot with dollop of foam. My cousin and I arrived shortly after opening on New Year's Eve. The cafe has a small interior with minimal seating, mostly bench seating along the wall with small round coffee tables. Even though there was only one barista working that morning, she was efficient at taking orders and making drinks despite several orders happening at once. We did not feel like we were waiting very long. I ordered a pour-over with the Finca El Paraiso Peach Colombian beans, which use a thermal shock washed process. That was something I had not heard of before. The tasting notes listed nectarine, tropical fruit, and caramel, and it was recommended since I was looking for something more out of the ordinary. I enjoyed the wilder flavor profile, but it was hard to fully appreciate because the coffee tasted overly diluted. The barista mentioned she used a 15g to 250g bean-to-water ratio, which is higher than how I normally enjoy my pour-overs. My cousin ordered a flat white with whole milk that was very creamy with strong espresso notes. We also ordered a matcha latte for my other cousin, which was apparently too creamy. Overall, the beans themselves were good, but the pour-over leaned watery for my personal preference. The bag of beans used for the pour-over was priced at $32, which is only a bit more than double the cost of the pour-over itself. In hindsight, I felt slightly ripped off and should have just bought the beans instead.

We anticipated a chaotic parking situation being familiar with the usually busy Times Square plaza but was very easy to find parking this morning. Beautiful space with modern decor. Always happy to get a booth! We got the chicken and waffle - tender,juicy chicken that's perfectly crispy on the outside. These were served with soft warm waffles and a side of syrup. We got a nice flat white. The braised beef breakfast sandwich was so tasty and went great with the Bernaise sauce (like a deconstructed eggs Benny). Would have preferred the mixed greens on the outside of the sandwich as a side salad rather than in the sandwich. It was served with a decent portion of thick cut home fries, bonus they add yams in the mix! Our first time trying a soufflé pancake. Came with 3 on the plate (not pictured as we started eating before I could take a photo lol). The texture takes some getting used to as it's almost too soft (batter-like) but they were perfectly sweet accompanied by a nice thick chocolate sauce and SMALL pieces of fruit (the banana had a nice sweet crunchy sugary glaze). Wouldve given 5 stars but but the pancake couldve been served with larger pieces of fruit or atleast way more of it. It became more of a garnish than a topping as the fruit were so so soooooo tiny! The space itself is bright, cozy, and modern. It's great for a casual brunch. The menu focuses on creative takes on classic brunch dishes, with most plates around $18-$25 and drinks about $6-$9. Despite having a reservation, we waited over 30 minutes for a table during the busy Saturday brunch rush, and parking around the plaza was difficult. When the food arrived, the eggs in both the eggs benny and the shakshouka were overcooked, which was disappointing since runny yolks are key to both dishes. Overall, Corner Cafe has a nice vibe and an interesting brunch menu, but the long wait, tough parking, and inconsistent execution made the experience fall short this time.

Cold HK Milk Tea tasted a bit off, it didn't taste that fresh and had a bit of an aftertaste. Two egg tarts were good enough for me. I'd definitely come back for their egg tarts and maybe buy more for a later snack.
