Rabbi had an outline for the event that covered everything each step of the way and made the whole wedding process so much easier. They even have a surround camera system that could be used in place of a videographer and the cameras are capable of live streaming. Before the event I had flowers delivered and the staff setup the table. Everything went better than expected and all the guest commented how impressive the Synagogue and Rabbi's performance. For example, the Trygve Lie Gallery is located here downstairs from the "church" and has a nice collection of Scandinavian art. On the main floor, there is a small food store featuring a whole range of foodstuffs from mother Norway. Upstairs there is a small library/reading room with a fairly impressive collection of books in Norwegian. With all of that said, I actually wasn't here for the art, which I think is the obvious draw for the non-Norwegian. Instead, I was here for the Norwegian installment of the European Book Club which meets monthly at cultural spaces all around the city. The reading room was perfect for a spirited discussion of Stig Saeterbakken's work. A kind member of the staff was so thoughtful and gracious that she prepared for us plenty of fresh Norwegian waffles and some freshly brewed coffee to accompany our discussion. The waffles were more pliant than I am accustomed to, and I loved the consistency. They were served with sour cream and raspberry jam. These were just delicious. It will be another year before I head back here for a book club discussion, but I think I will be back much sooner for a tour of the gallery and some Norwegian cookies -- yum!

I showed up for a random Wednesday buffet lunch, and met some of the most genuinely warm people I've run across in Manhattan. I'm not religious and I'm far too short and furry to be Norwegian, but the people running the lunch were unbelievably welcoming to a bunch of random dudes who just wanted to try some pickled herring. The food, for what it's worth, was also amazing: lots of fresh salads, a few varieties of pickled herring and canned mackerel, some fresh bread, baked salmon, gravlaks, and an interesting concoction that resembled jello with bits of shrimp, fish, and vegetables floating in it. It tasted way better than it sounds. You probably don't believe me. There's a small store and cafe inside the church that always offers coffee, waffles, and a few Nordic packaged goods. And the store always seems to be staffed by ridiculously friendly people, who seem wonderfully impervious to the bustling, indifferent culture that surrounds them in Midtown. Amazing.

I'm having a lovely time at the St. John the Baptist guest house and convent (CSJB). It is a quiet…read morethough welcoming space, where I've been engaged in a Lenten retreat. The sisters chant the psalms with care, their dog, Peach, is adorable, the food (and dessert!) is splendid and the abundance of trees is fabulous. And there is all-you-can-drink coffee (caf and decaf), tea as well as fruit and cookies offered in between meals. What's not to love?? : ) There aren't many guesthouses wherein you can receive a gentle smile from a nun and decadent chocolate cake, all in one day. God is good! This is my second time staying here, and I hope to return soon. The guest house itself is large, charming and spacious -- even if you don't come for spiritual reasons, it's a great remedy for winter claustrophobia or just the craziness of city living. It's a reasonable commute from Penn Station NYC or the Christopher Street PATH station (in the West Village). A sincere shoutout of gratitude goes out to the mother--daughter pair (Suzanne and Samantha), who have been in charge of the kitchen and dining room area this weekend.
