The Rabbi is warm and vibrant and the members will make you feel as if you were a part of their family. The sanctuary looks like something out of Frank Lloyd Wright's portfolio and there is also plenty of off street parking. They have an "All Are Welcome" policy and will not shake you down for gelt! If you are looking for a synagogue that will welcome you and your family you must give this place a try.

It was founded in 1864 and has been in its present building since 1925-26. The temple has a new program, called terumah, in place that replaces traditional dues. In the Torah, terumah indicated a "free-will" offering, not a required one. It is based on how much your heart is moved to strengthen, celebrate and grow Jewish life there. BUT I've had so…read moremany wonderful experiences there, with the same sensitive Rabbi, and with many of the same people, that it's like my family away from family . They now have a fabulous Cantor, who's set up a Choir where they stood with him (AMAZING) and sang, then the Cantor invites the members to join in-like the Rabbi, totally without artifice. I've been to Bar Mitzvahs there of my nephews and nieces, I've been to sad services marking my brother's Death and Yartzeit and also for the High Holidays. I find the Sermons to be worthwhile and the sound system is first rate. There are many 'international' members-if that's the word. Anyhow, it is a comforting place and I recommend it.

On Saturdays, there are services in the main Sanctuary, Tot Shabbat in the classrooms and Junior Congregation upstairs. Rabbi Alder is really smart and his sermons are always insightful and leave you wanting more. Cantor Yager trained as an opera singer and has a beautiful voice and is lively and engaging.

We met many nice families from Springfield and the neighboring towns. My daughter had a beautiful Bat Mitzvah, and three years later, out son also excelled at his Bar Mitzvah. They each got a great Jewish education and developed close bonds with other Jewish kids. My daughter went on to become USY (United Synagogue Youth) president, and my son, USY membership vice president. They each enjoyed the Temple's Teen Institute, which was their decision to attend. Bottom line, Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael was an important part of their growing up. I highly recommend joining this synagogue for the social aspect as well as the religious one. Now that my husband and I are "empty nesters" we enjoy participating in the Friday night international themed dinners following the lively Shabbat services. And I have become active in Women's League where I've gotten friendly with many women from town who previously were just acquaintances.
