Every dish was amazingly tasteful. So fresh and flavorful. We dined outside and all staff were very friendly and attentive. We ordered the halibut ceviche, flank steak empanadas, carnitas, shrimp mole, and the flan cheesecake. All were delicious. The black bean mole is out of this world. Highly recommend!! read more

Conmole is totally worth the hype!! It was busy for a Wednesday night, and my friend & I were lucky to snag a table for two without a reservation. To start: the cocktails (limonada & margarita) were delicious, refreshing, and super strong. Their menu items are meant to share so we tried the ceviche, chorizo empanadas, and short rib mole. Each item was delicious! The ceviche was fresh, the chorizo empanada was the perfect savory bite paired with its sauce (can you really go wrong with chorizo though??), and the short rib was fall-off-the-bone with a complex and flavorful sauce. Traveling to Charlottesville for business and frankly, never did I picture myself finding a good Mexican food place, much less traditional Oaxaca mole negro. Boy, did this place prove me wrong! Excellent excellent excellent mole negro. Perfect combination of chocolate and chile. Good portion with a leg and thigh and a good side of Mexican rice. I also had a Jamaica (hibiscus) aqua fresca which was was "con gas" (sparkling) and a great as well. Refreshing without overly sweet. I was able to get in early on a weeknight, but this place does brisk business so make a reservation for sure. Parking is good with an adjacent pay parking. If I had to give constructive criticism...$3 for a "side" of corn tortillas I thought was a bit much. Mole is supposed to be enjoyed with tortillas so I think it should be included with the meal. read more

I really loved the food and special cocktails. The moles and meats and tacos were all excellent we had 6 and all were satisfied with their meals. Sadly, my wife rated the normal margaritas as less than average. We have been spoiled by some top shelf margaritas at another restaurant near where we live. But it really was not stellar compared to the food. I would love some mezcal inspired drinks and Cadillac margs to take the experience over the top. If you like Mole, which translates to sauce in the language of the Aztecs, then this is the place for you. This is their specialty. Anything you get will come with mole. That was the case when we've eaten there. The establishment's hype is that it serves authentic Oaxacan food. The place is small, so most of the tables are outside in a tent with patio with heaters. Be sure to make a reservation and reserve it with a credit card. We've been a few times with friends who will be graduating UVA and with parents. It has been hit or miss. Tastes are repetitive. The portions we were told are family style but, they're more personal style. The margs are OK. There's wine too but we didn't try it. Someone's had the nerve to ask about chips and salsa and the server was not amused. When she left to place the order, someone else, a man, came and said something too. We were at the end of the table and didn't hear. There was a bit of tension and some commentary.. Because who doesn't want to be condescended to and made to feel like a philistine when they ask for a common item, served everywhere, except at an overpriced Mexican joint in a college town. The service has at times been friendly and sometimes not so much. There were six of us and we spent at least $50-$60 per person not including drinks, tax and tip. We were asked to leave after 2 hours to accommodate another reservation. Regardless we very much enjoyed the experience. read more

Everything sings in perfect harmony at this restaurant! The cocktails are creative (loved the Mezcaltini). The moles are all different and delicious. The octopus was so tender, but watch out for the hot sauce, it will make you sweat!!! Both desserts were good, personally, I loved the flan cheesecake. read more

This was the type of meal I never wanted to end! Great place for sharing so you can try more things! We got: coliflor (cauliflower with green mole), guajillo mole, and the mussels. Everything was amazing - I have nothing bad to say and am salivating just thinking about it all. Such savory, complex, unique flavors to all their dishes. The ribs we had with the guajillo mole completely fell off the bone and the cauliflower was the perfect pan sear and texture. We were so lucky to snag the last table outside (reservation only!). I was worried about being cold, but each table is seated right under a heater, so it's honestly not bad at all! Such friendly and helpful service too! MUST VISIT. read more

I have never had Oaxacan food before so I was very excited to try this place! Firstly the ambiance is very cozy and inviting. Our waitress was phenomenal and super helpful and attentive. We really appreciated her taking the time to walk us through the various dishes and giving us her recs. We got the grilled octopus which I thought was just alright. It was a bit dryer than I would like. The sauce helped but it is definitely very spicy!! The other appetizer (cannot remember the name) was delicious!! I could have had like 5 of those plantain things. The mole negro is definitely a winner. We got the mole negro con pollo as well which I'm retrospect we should have gotten a different type of mole to try but I was very happy with the entree dish as well. The chicken was literally falling off the bone. You didn't need teeth to eat it. Overall, this place is 10/10. Wonderful date night spot to try!! read more

I literally don't know how to leave a good enough review for Conmole. I was in Charlottesville for the week for some medical stuff at UVA and having a tough time but seriously it was worth it to eat at Conmole. Some of the best food I have EVER had. Living in SWVA has left this native Arizonan/Texan feeling very deprived of decent Mexican food- but not anymore! If I lived in Charlottesville, you would find me here literally all the time. Perfect for a romantic date night, especially for those who are COVID-cautious. I felt very safe even when dining in! They recently built a covering on their patio and its just perfect. The music is fantastic and the food is to die for. Service was also incredible. We chose to share four things on the menu and it was so fun! Amazing mole! We tried the mole chipotle, mole negro, and mole guajillo. All were perfect and you could definitely taste the uniqueness of each one. This would be the best restaurant in Charlottesville if they didn't require a credit card when reserving a table and the threat of charging $20 per person if you don't show up to your reservation. My wife and I dined at Comal yesterday, and it's safe to say we will definitely be back! Comal left us craving more and wanting to try all the variety on the menu. The first thing worth mentioning is their vegetarian-friendly menu. Every non-vegetarian dish has a vegetarian counterpart. In fact, we tried the masa gnocchi en mole in lieu of the chicken en mole, and it was incredible! The gnocchi's texture perfectly complimented the rich mole. I doubt I will be able to order it with the chicken when I come back! The second dish we tried was the pork ribs. Note that all the main dishes are mole based; but each sauce is very different. The ribs were cooked to perfection, and the mole was lighter and tangier than the other dish. The main dish portions are rather large. Two main plates were enough to leave us satiated. The cocktail menu is short but sweet with tequila, mezcal and rum offerings. I had a Cabellero (mezcal cocktail) in lieu of the whiskey cocktails I usually enjoy, and it did the trick! The wine list is quite extensive as well. After this experience, I'm looking forward to coming back and trying the moles which we did not get to this first time! read more

This restaurant, and the overall experience, were wonderful! We often regret going to a new restaurant in the first couple of months because they haven't found their stride...not the case with Comal! We were mainly intrigued by their staples--all mole based dishes. We tried five dishes (planned four but loved it so much we kept going) and ended the evening with a passionate debate about whether the coliflor or enfrijoladas con carne asada. Never would I have thought to pair cauliflower and egg and I now regret the years I've missed of combining the two. And the carne asada--no disrespect to Mas--was an infinitely better iteration! The only thing I didn't love was the house-made bread; it was a little dry but my husband didn't mind because he just soaked up all the mole. Will definitely be going back, one of our best experiences eating in Charlottesville in the last few years! read more

Charming and unassuming spot nestled next to The Local with EXCELLENT food and outdoor dining. Toasty warm heaters and ample seating made for one of the safest cold weather dining options I know of in Charlottesville. Staff was kind and attentive and proud of what they were serving. Food is artfully prepared and expertly designed for the tasting and visual experience . Most memorable are 1.cauliflower in an eggy batter with a beautiful green sauce 2. Avocado relleno - not at all what I expected in the best way. Coming back to try the tamales Drinks were tasty and served in hand painted mugs with a Latin aesthetic. Super delicious Oaxacan Mexican cuisine. They have a TON of vegetarian options that are creative and delicious. Some items can be made vegan as well. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. The vegetarian tamale was fun and the mole sauce was delicious. We ordered online and they brought the food to our car. There was a parking lot too, which is nice for the Belmont area. Our order was correct, (which is happening less and less on our takeout orders). If you're looking for creative, vegetarian, Mexican cuisine I'd recommend this restaurant. read more

Fantastic experience all around. Reservations online were simple including a slight adjustment for our timing needs. Service was friendly and timed well, there when we needed it. The highlight was the incredible food. We enjoyed three dishes that were well balanced, flavorful and unique. Calamari was seasoned perfectly, slightly spicy with deep flavors, and served in a way that was fun to share. Pork ribs with mole and avocado were both out of this world. Eating these dishes reminded us of what's possible with well prepared dishes. The mole sauce set the standard for what mole should be while the avocado was perfectly ripe with a fantastic assortment of veggies and flavors. They're currently offering takeout and made the entire process so convenient! When we pulled up to the restaurant, someone immediately came out to greet us and then brought the food right to our car. We ordered the Conmole Package so we could try a little bit of everything they have to offer. It was the perfect amount of food for two, as long as you aren't starving (in which case you should order an extra empanada or two). The mole negro was the star of the meal for sure! The sauce was delicious with the perfect amount of heat and an interesting blend of spices. The cauliflor was also really interesting and the green mole was a great contrast to the heavier mole negro. Overall, we really enjoyed the meal! We would love to try the other options on the menu (or just eat the mole negro again). read more

One of the best meals I've ever had. So much flavor. In fact, I'm still literally puzzled how they packed so much flavor in each bite. The carnitas were cooked to perfection, the rice surprisingly flavorful, even the avocado sauce and pico were amazing. Followed dinner with a flan cheesecake that was amazing. Just had a lovely dinner there and they're doing everything right. A reasonably-sized menu done very well; attentive, personable service, and, when the check came, we said, "oh, that's it?" rather than wondering where the money went. They were quite accommodating to our four year old, who loved the mussels and the octopus (everything we tried was good, but the octopus was the clear winner). We did not get a chance to stick around for dessert this time around, but the table next to ours was served an absolutely gorgeous and massive slice of almond cake, so I bet it's pretty solid. Comal would be perfect if you are looking for a quick snack, (albeit a pricy one) at a local restaurant with fantastic service, good food, and authentic atmosphere. However if you are looking to actually eat the equivilant of a full meal, expect to pay approximately $40-$50 a person plus drinks and tip. Items are in the $12-$16 range with most of the signature items being $15 or $16. Wait staff will describe the orders as "made to be shared" though one order is the equivalent of about a 1/3 or 1/4 of a full meal. Would love to return if the serving sizes were doubled or tripled - or if the prices were to come down significantly. Menu is great for those with dietary restrictions. read more

The food was really good. We really enjoyed the tamales, both with and without carne. The Mexito cocktail was a bit bland, but the mula was tasty. The queso frito and the (no) camarones confrijol molido was also super good. It's a small space and might be hard to hear your dining partner. Looks like the patio is nice, but it was too cold to eat outside when we visited. Seems like a very vegetarian friendly place- almost every menu item had a no meat option.
