An amazing experience thanks to the crew of cb charters!
    David B.

We found Connemara Bay charters in from a web search when looking for lobster charters. They are also known as CB charters as well. If you're looking for the readers digest version, the combination half day striped bass and lobstering charter was simply fantastic. Captain Kevin and his son Kellan were an absolute pleasure and we would not consider going out fishing or lobstering in the area with anyone else! Highly recommended! For more details read on: We contacted Captain Kevin by cell phone and he was eager, helpful, and a pleasure to work with in order to coordinate our trip. Since my family was not 100% sure of their sea legs we decided to do the half day striped bass charter combined with a little bit of lobstering as well (what they called the "combination trip"). We scheduled an early-morning trip since that was Captain Kevin's recommendation based on tides and weather. We met Captain Kevin at a local restaurant parking lot where he greeted us with a big smile and strong Boston accent. We followed him to a private dock where we met his first mate (his son) Kellan, who was also an absolute pleasure. My wife, teenage boys, and even our well behaved German Shepherd got on board for our trip. The boat was definitely large enough for everyone to be comfortable while we steamed out to the fishing grounds. Captain Kevin and Kellan were a pleasure to talk to throughout our trip and were experts at trying to tailor the trip to our needs. When we got to the fishing grounds we put a line in the water and begin catching mackerel to use as bait for the larger fish. To be honest, this part of the trip was a lot more fun than I had anticipated. We were bringing up fish as fast as we could throw the line in the water and would be catching as many as six at a time! I noticed that unlike many other trips I had been on, Captain Kevin was not afraid to put a lot of bait in the water and we soon had quite a long chum slick behind the boat and after about 15 minutes or so we had our first striper on the line. We were all thrilled to bring in this big fish and would have been more than pleased with the trip even if we had not caught anything else. We fished for a while longer but the winds picked up a little bit and the seas got a little larger and Captain Kevin considerately asked me if my wife was getting a little green and offered to take a little break and pick up a few lobster pots in some calmer waters which we agreed to do. Once we got behind the breakwater, she felt a little better and enjoyed watching my sons and I pull up lobster traps while getting a lesson in the technique of lobstering. We also learned a lot about the conservation efforts around the lobster fishery as well which was a nice aspect of the trip. In fact, one of my two boys raved throughout the day that the lobstering was definitely his favorite part of the trip! At this point we were reaching the end of our scheduled five hour trip, but Captain Kevin wasn't done with us yet. Instead, he took us to a few of his secret locations where each of my boys ended up catching a huge striper of their own--including the biggest one of the day which was by far the biggest fish I have ever seen in person! After the trip was over and we were back at dock, Kellan cleaned our fish, filled a bucket with lobster and recommended that we consider taking our fish over to "lobsta land" restaurant where we started our day and where they will prepare the fish and the lobsters family style for a small fee. We did this and had an excellent meal! Our thanks again to Captain Kevin and his son Kellan for a wonderful day that I can honestly say would have been thoroughly enjoyable because of our hosts, even if we had not caught a single striper.

Do yourself a favor and skip this tour. Go in buy some cool merch and maybe ask if you can watch…read morethe video they play at the beginning of the "tour" which was about 75% of it. Or just search for YouTube videos on the history of ice. I wouldn't even have minded if they charged you a couple of bucks for this 15 minute tour in which the guide literally shows you some pictures of frequent customers and blocks of ice and then dumps you off at the dock behind the building. Not sure what I expected but couldn't believe that this actually got good reviews at all. Again great merch, got some cool hats and the t-shirts were pretty sweet but the tour...thumbs down!

Our tour guide Sam showed us a movie that told the history of the ice industry, Then we took a little stroll around the modern facility that services the fishing industry and makes bagged ice for the local area. We even saw some seals frolicking near the dock where the ice is loaded onto fishing boats! I imagine this tour would be fantastic any time of year. The length and price were more than appropriate. Besides, they sell neat t-shirts, hoodies, etc. right there in the gift shop. My only regret was that I didn't have any cash on hand to tip our fantastic tour guide. Sam, we owe you are beer! After their tour, you will saying, "Next time, make it Cape Pond Ice!"

Then the whales would surface with open mouths and feed on the fish. And we saw this four or five times! Also saw them coming out of the water and diving down many times. The boat wasn't crowded. The captain would steer the boat left and right so that everyone on board got an even amount of time seeing the whales. The naturalist who guided the tour was very informative. Overall a great experience.

But once Captain Bill found the whales, we were treated to a non-stop thrill exhibition of fireworks in the water, from below the water, and majestically hurtling out of the water. Five stars for sure. My Sweet Lord, we saw it all. We had a ton of sightings, pods of four whales at a time, three magnificent full breaches and a dozen majestic flukes. Our guide/naturalist Rebeca added quite a bit to the experience with some expert commentary on the whales and the state of international whaling. One cool thing we learned was that whales spend their winters in the warm waters of the Dominican Republic and live off their blubber. Sounds like a good career path to me. Rebeca knew the names of the whales by their fluke markings, and she knew which whale babies belonged to which whale mommas. She was terrific. Just be warned, the ride to the whales is two hours out and two hours back to Gloucester. Our ride back was choppy and the barf-bag inventory was seriously depleted after our run. But this goes with the territory, it's a hazard for doing something like this. So if you have a weak stomache, take some pills or something . I was 100% satisfied with how this spectacular excursion played out. Well done, Captain Bill!
