Let me assure you what a BLESSING this inpatient hospice house is for Columbus. As someone who travels along the East coast providing hospice care for multiple hospitals/hospice, OhioHealth provides top-notch care! These patients/families are not only made comfortable in a beautiful environment, but they are also provided compassion. Based on some of the reviews, some folks simply do not understand that if a patient is placed in a hospice house--they are dying and hospice appropriate. Most of these patients are experiencing symptoms that were too difficult to manage at home or they are here briefly to give the families 5 days of respite. When/how long the patient lives is between the patient and the universe/God. If clinicians could cure the patient, they would. The majority of these patients have reached the end of what aggressive treatments and medicines can cure/fix--to do more would only prolong suffering. Comfort care becomes the priority! Our job is to make sure they are comfortable and provide education for families. As physicians and nurses, we have medications to assist the patient as they near end of life. Social Workers provide resources. Chaplains provide spiritual support. It's a multifaceted approach to put the patient first. Again, I really do hope Columbus realizes what a rare and special gift Kobacker is to the community--many cities are not so fortunate to have inpatient hospice facilities! Blessings!

From the security staff, the house keepers, the kitchen staff, Nursing staff and the therapists EVERYONE was just amazing. I am so grateful to every staff member who cared for my mother. If a loved one in your family needs care, let this team take care of them. For the family members, stop in the cafeteria because the food was out of this world. Thanks again to every one. My husband was admitted to Doctors' Hospital after having seizures and a stroke. He received…read moreexcellent care there, but after a month, he was transferred to unit 3 West at Select Specialty Hospital near Victorian Village. The staff, i.e. nurses, aides, and physical therapy tried really hard to get him better, but after month here he went home to Hospice. Lauren, the case manager, helped coordinate his transfer from here to Hospice at home. A special shout out to Elaine, Mary, and Sean. Thanks from the bottom of my heart! The other staff were great too but I can't remember everyone else's names. The skin therapy team got him a pressure wave bed to help prevent him from getting pressure sores. Even tho my husband was bedridden for a month, he never got a pressure ulcer. The building itself is very old and was a constant source of discomfort. The room had no air conditioning or heat- none, zip, nada. I brought in a small space heater and I was grateful that no one made me take it home. The ancillary staff were wonderful, too. He couldn't swallow, so he was on a thick liquids diet and a tube feeding. He loved chocolate so the dietary staff worked with me to get him thick liquids he would like. They put special boots on him to prevent foot drop. He was bathed regularly and the staff put in and took out his hearing aides. They never lost his hearing aides! Every day they got him out of the bed and into a chair that was specially made for patients who can't sit up on their own. It was uncomfortable at first, but the nurses always gave him his pain medicine an hour before getting him up, so he was able to tolerate it and the change in position was good for his body and lungs. His doctor kept me informed of changes in his care and he even called me on my cell to discuss things if I didn't see him while I was there. This hospital helped him make it home to me in one very good piece! I'm so sorry my husband died, but he went peacefully.

The facility and staff in the mc unit were great back to my grandmother even though she was nonverbal due to Alzheimer's. My interactions and time at the facility were brief but they stood out because of those positive interactions. My 2nd mom who I've been taking care for the last several years is currently a resident at Smith's Mill for rehab. Unfortunately her dementia has progressed so I wasn't sure what to expect from her once she was transferred from the hospital. She's slowly perking up except for when Ashley Everson stops by her room each morning to check on her. She's much more talkative with Ashley and more like herself. That alone was enough for me to leave a review. As former fire/ems, I've seen all kinds of facilities and staff so I came in to sign paperwork and ready to ask a hundred questions. I left without asking any of them because Ashley covered everything I was going to ask and went over things I hadn't thought to ask or even thought about. It's rare to find a facility that is as nice as they appear on the outside. It's even more rare to meet someone like Ashley that genuinely cares about not just the residents but making sure the family members are informed and kept in the loop. When visiting my mom, I saw Ashley pass by the room and stopped her to ask the various units and then asked about meds because my mom said she hadn't been given any pain meds. I took that with a grain of salt because dementia. Ashley could have said she would send the nurse in to talk to me about meds but instead, she talked to the nurse and let me know when the last dose was given and how long before my mom could receive another dose. In that same visit, I was greeted by people left and right while walking to my mom's room. I brought her dinner for her birthday and she was just finishing it when Myshawn came in with dinner and wished my mom a happy birthday. She was slightly confused so he showed her the meal order with her info on it and the happy birthday at the top. Asked how her birthday was and if she enjoyed her dinner then said he had a piece of cake for her. She was all smiles during that interaction with him. Those moments where she's smiling ear to ear while in rehab are fleeting so it means a lot when that happens. I've told a number of friends that have aging family members about my experience over the years any time my mom goes to an SNF so they have options when needed or when they start the process of moving a family member who needs more care. I've since told all but a few of them about Smith's Mill and if they decide to check it out, ask for Ashley because she is not only a font of knowledge when it comes to elder care but she is genuine when it comes to caring about the residents. That and the food has looked delicious every time I've been to visit during meal time. Honestly a little envious of my mom on that front.
