Finally found Madison after half a year of bad haircuts. Ever since I lost my last hairstylist who switched to a different line of work, I've had the hardest time finding someone who knows how to cut short Asian hair. A friend suggested I try a barber shop, and good riddance to all the salons who charge me $50+ for a "women's haircut" when their men's cuts (read: short hair) are much cheaper. Other than Madison's uncanny ability to know exactly what I want with my vague descriptions, what I love about Constitution Plaza Barber Shop is they charge one flat rate for everyone. My biggest pet peeve is when I have to pay a haircut upcharge for no apparent reason other than identifying as female. It's really convenient now that my husband and I can get our hair cut at the same place, and Madison does as great and as consistent a job on his fine, curly hair as she does with mine. For safety reasons, for now they are requiring people wear masks at all times inside and to stay in your car while you're waiting. They have sanitizing procedures between each appt and hand sanitizer at the door. They do take walk-ins typically but I do recommend booking ahead, especially now. Recently moved to CT several months ago, this place was walking distance from my school. I went by the reviews and I was ready to commit. I followed the advice from another review and called ahead and made an appointment with Madison. I recommend that you make a appointment before coming in. The barber shop is clean, slickly designed, and a cool cash register. Madison was awesome. Super nice and an even better barber. Madison ability to pay attention to detail and her desire to deliver on a great haircut came through. Madison was able to pay paid attention to all my requests since I brought in pictures of the desired cut. Not expensive either around $15-$20 for the cut. Madison did a great job! I'm an Asian female with ear-length hair, just for reference. I brought an image and she checked the image several times in details and asked questions to make sure everything was what I wanted! And I am 100% satisfied. She also gave good suggestions. (i.e I wanted to cut my bang very short. she noticed my hair had the tendency to stick up and told me she was worried that could happen if the bang was too short) (But I forgot to tip her.... Sebastian cuts my hair but I've had Madison do it before--they're both great. I am extremely picky about my hair so I wanted to take the time to write this for anyone else like me. Looked like a great spot on yelp. However, i went in on a Friday around noon time and I greeted the barbers and sat down waiting. They responded as they were servicing their customers and I took a seat. Note that I was the only one waiting. One of the barbers is sitting down on his phone waiting, at that point I had thought that he was a customer... Afterwards one person walks in, and the barber sitting down takes care of him. I think alright, he's probably already had an appointment with him. Then another person walks in, the main barber goes to eat his lunch over a 15 min period and says "I'll be right with you man!". I thought that it was directed towards me. 15 minutes later, once he is done with his lunch, he walks straight past me and helps the Second person to walk in. Not a single word to me or acknowledgement. They might be good barbers, but try to at least either explain other appointments to the people waiting right next to you. The indirect disrespect will keep me away. What a waste of 40 minutes. To the three ambivalent "barbers" a little courtesy goes a long way. read more

For the past year and a half I have parked in the garage right across the street from this barber shop but never bothered going in. I normally just go to the cost cutters by my house because I am in a rush and just want a quick cheap hair cut. Thursday night I meant to go and get a hair cut, but was in a bit of a rush to get somewhere and just plain forgot to stop for my haircut, so I was stuck. I needed to get it Friday, so during lunch I decided why not try them out? I walked the block to the barber shop and asked them how much and if someone was available to do my hair. It was only $15 bucks and Frank was available. It was just such a classic scene to walk in to, there were 3 old Italian guys sitting around a TV eating sandwiches and just talking. Frank did a great job with my hair and was very awesome. I normally get my hair cut pretty short when I get it cut, but then I go a while in between hair cuts, so when I told him how short I wanted it he was a bit nervous that I was mis-speaking. Because of this he wanted to start longer and then just slowly go shorter as I wanted it. He took his time to make sure everything was perfect and didn't want to just rush through it. He did such a great job I think I will be going there for now on when I need my hair cut. It was such a great experience it is beyond worth the extra $2 compared to cost cutters. read more

Have lived in the surrounding area for about twelve (12) months and I finally found my barber. This is a must go, appointment (preferred) and walk-in style proprietor, who is exceedingly talented and personable with his customers. The shop is clean and filled with some classy oldies (Marvin Gaye, Earth-Wind-and-Fire, Stevie Wonder...etc). Enjoy and expect to look good/feel good afterwards. I love this place. You can see in the pic that I don't require lots of special care in this area, but this is a warm, friendly, old-fashioned barber shop, with prices to match. It's $15 for a cut. Joe Lisi's the guy for me; fast and friendly and the cut is always what I ask for. Sal and the other guys are nice as well, and there's almost always a little friendly conversation going back and forth in the shop. I usually go on a Saturday morning, so parking is not too tough on the street, but they validate in the garage if you need it. Madison and Sebastian are my go to barbers in Hartford. I found them a few years ago via Yelp and I am happy to say both are skilled and friendly. It is very tough to find someone that can cut Asian hair. They handle it like a pro. They take their time and listen to your preferences. Call ahead to schedule an appointment. I used to pay a lot for haircuts because I wear my hair in a pompadour and it's pretty hard to find someone who can do it right so I figured the more I pay the better the cut, right? Wrong! After my expensive stylist moved away I had to find a new place for a cut and my first thought was Rooster's in Glastonbury. It seemed to fit; the style of shop seemed to lend itself to my kind of cut, it was fairly expensive, etc. I walked out of there seething. For more info on that I wrote a review. After that I turned to Yelp for advice which is how I came across Sebastian's place. Holy crap! The cut I got was phenomenal, the price was right... I haven't been this happy with my cut since... ever. Highly recommended, Sebastian couldn't be nicer, I just can't say enough good things. TLDR: Constitution Plaza Barber Shop will exceed your expectations. Having just moved here from Cincinnati for graduate school, I was looking for a barber shop that might replace the one I frequented back home. Well after the work Johnny did, I was certain I had found the right spot. In fact, if I had stumbled into this shop back home, I'd still be writing that I found a new go-to location for a hair cut. The summary points of my experience are as follows: - Scheduled Monday over the phone w/Madison for Wednesday 10:30 - Finding the place is a little bit tricky but protip: just park in the constitution plaza parking lot right off of I-84 and call/ask - Was a little late, Johnny asks if I could do 11:30 as there would be client overlap otherwise (some people think this is a bad thing but in my experience, places that firmly stick to appointment times are exactly what you want) - Come back, get in the seat, and Johnny gets to work. - Conversation: as someone new to the area, I felt right at home. Learned about the city, things to do, and I look forward to learning/talking more. - Haircut time: approximately 30 minutes Clientele/Patrons: - Actually a really wide range of folks both in terms of ages and styles. I saw both younger and older professionals with varying degrees of "formality"... e.g. regardless of if you wear a suit or jeans and t-shirt, they will make you look your best. Most important part, the haircut itself: - In all seriousness, I honestly think this was the best haircut I've ever gotten. If a "good haircut" is one where you and others are happy with it immediately after, then mine was excellent because a week later I'm still writing a glowing review. - Somehow, Johnny was able to do this despite me sweating quite a bit (not related to temp in shop). GREAT cuts & atmosphere. After moving to Hartford from New York, I was worried about finding my 'go-to' places again in the greater Hartford area. Madison and Seb put me at ease right away at least in the haircut department! They are both extremely capable barbers with welcoming personalities. I have thick/coarse/straight asian hair but Madison always gives me a great cut. Quick, easy, no frill cuts @ great price (at least compared to new york!) I started going to this shop around 96' when I worked across the street. Tony is the barber I've been using all those years. Gives me a great and quick haircut that takes me about 25 minutes. Best compliment I can pass to Tony, is a story. I was out during happy hour one evening when this women who was near by said, 'Wow, who does your hair, they did a wonderful job.' This women was a owner of a hair salon. You should have seen the look on her face when I said it was Tony, an elderly Italian man in a barber shop. BTW, I no longer work across the street, I work down by the XL Center and I still go to the shop. Thanks for the last 150 or so haircuts and many more to come. read more

Really good place to get a haircut. I came here after reading the great reviews and they didn't let me down. Immediately I noticed the smiles and conversations that we're going on between the customers and the barbers. I had a cut with Sebastian and he was very friendly and responsive to what I wanted for my haircut. He did a very good job, one of the best cuts I have received. Prices are very fair as it is $15 for students/college students and $20 for a men's cut before tip. I'd definitely recommend this place as all the barbers seem very friendly and good. read more

I almost can't remember when I first went here to get my hair cut. (It must have been a long time ago because I had a lot more hair back then.) It had to be around the mid or late '70s. I moved to Chicago in the late '80s and would plan my trips back to Connecticut based on when I needed a hair cut. I've since moved back to CT and wouldn't think about letting anybody other than Tony cut my hair. Sebastian (affectionately referred to as Sebby) is not only a great personality to chat with, but he is great at what he does as well. Madison has also cut my hair and done a fantastic job. Cash only and men's cut is $20, which is similar or lower than many other places I have gone. I now live in Boston, but when I visit Hartford for work, I try to make a stop at Constitution Plaza Barber Shop. Reservation is Recommended as they fill up fast, but walk-ins are welcome and I have called a few hours before and been okay. The shop has changed significantly over time and has brand new infrastructure and a unique design that makes it interesting as well. I have visited that shop since 2011 and would not go anywhere else in Hartford simply because you cannot beat the price, quality and conversation. read more
