View from 21st ST. Main entrance? Regardless, you'll then see "the Store" in front of you and exhibit to the left.

I was standing on a corner eating my Peace, Love, Donuts donuts and thought I noticed signage for crafts. This word-"crafts"-can mean many things and with sticky, crossed fingers I darted across the busy intersection to investigate. I think the best place to enter this gallery is from 21st ST. This entrance leads you into the shop, or "the Store," which is what my review is mostly focused on. So, back to "crafts." There are really talented contemporary artists featured here and the Store is a great place to get contemporary pieces for you, your home or for gifts. I bought two Brett Freund (PA artists) ceramic pieces and they were so beautifully wrapped I felt guilty they were only for me. Prices are varied, depending on size and medium and of course the artist. Whatever your budget, this "gift shop" (another term I hate) is a must to check out. One thing to note, I was there on Sunday, which neither the gallery or Shop should have been open on, so I'm not sure what was going on that day. The gallery was indeed closed, rather, roped off for the trading of exhibits but what I could see was exciting. This is definitely on the list to check out when I return.

There was a sign on the corner of Butler and 43rd indicating a cookie stop was down this street. Am I ever glad I followed the sign; otherwise, I would have remained on the main drag of Butler and never ventured into this lovely oasis. It's in an old house that is charming in itself. You make your way from room to room on the first floor. The day we were here, there were books in the front with the author present to sign them (gift number one), hand knit scarves next in line with the maker present (gifts number two and three), handmade earrings further back (gift number four), and artwork hung on the walls in the hallway. Everywhere I turned there were eye-catching handmade pieces. Definitely on my list to re-visit for those one-of-a kind locally made items.

You wont find this place unless you see their sandwich board situated on Butler Street. It's tucked away on 43rd Street and looks exactly like the rest of the houses on that block. Inside you'll find a variety of local art including paintings, pottery and jewelry. I'm not much of an art buyer and, while I really like their stuff, I simply can't afford it. However, their jewelry is priced low enough that my mom can indulge every once in a while. If you're into locally made, handcrafted art, it's definitely worth a look. The place is rather inconspicuous on the outside but on the inside it's a beautiful Victorian era house brimming with local art and behind the counter is a very nice lady that'll answer any questions you might have.

Lawrenceville is so hip these days!…read more I stopped in here with my mom and marveled at all of the neat 3-D art on display. Then I ran across a gorgeous mosaic by Rachel Sagers and snatched it right up! The woman who helped me with my purchase was friendly and made sure that my art was carefully wrapped and ready for transit. The feel in the gallery is spacious and welcoming, and the art was so unlike other things I've seen. Some items are pretty pricey but it's great to browse. I would come here again for sure.

As my wife and I travel to various destinations local art is our souvenir of choice with our walls in our house telling a story of our adventures. Joy does an incredible job understanding our style and willingly accepting any challenge we throw at her. We have now had close to 20 pieces framed with little direction other than big picture vision. She has never failed to delight us!! Lastly, Joy the owner is reason enough to visit. She is a wonderful and welcoming host that could gladly have you extend your planned 10 minute visit to over an hour. The conversation and friendliness are always a highlight. Given its world-class reputation, I was surprised but not really. After all, if it's not part of his curriculum, why should he know about it? I eventually figured out where it was and didn't know it shared the same building as the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The building was massive, and the upside was that a single $25 admission gave me access to both museums. The art museum takes up 155,000 square feet of exhibition space divided into twenty galleries with over 1,800 pieces on display. The focus is primarily on art, architecture, photography, and design between the 19th century and now. Here there are key masterworks from the likes of Renoir and Monet (Photo 7) to Warhol and Guston. The Hall of Architecture is a cavernous room full of plaster casts of architectural masterpieces like the North Transept Portal of the Bordeaux Cathedral (Photo 5). There's an extensive archival collection by Pittsburgh photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris, whose work dramatically focuses on the history of African American life. The wide spectrum of furnishings was particularly fascinating, and the Grand Staircase provides the appropriate grandeur (Photo 9). RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh?
