Dawn didn't have a regularly scheduled tour for today, the day we wanted to go, but she organized one around our interested, and had the lead time to promote in the neighborhood. Dawn is incredibly well organized and well prepared. We're from SF, staying in LIC for the week, and I just Yelped Astoria tours, and this came up. First: come hungry! Although each stop is really just an appetizer, the combination is as filling as any meal I've had since I arrived. We had delicious samples of food from Dawn's favorite Greek, Indian, Lebanese, Italian & organic delis, bakeries, grocers & restaurants. She knows the neighborhood & the history, including ethnic & demographic trends. She thought of everything--even greeted us with cold bottled water as we got off the subway stop. She brought of napkins, plastic ware, wet wipes (for after the baklava). She'd contacted all the purveyors in advance; they all knew her by name and welcomed us warmly. She will happily accommodate any special requests or interests--she even checked ahead to see if we had any special dietary requirements. Although Dawn's own foodie tours are a relatively new venture, she is clearly really experienced. She's a licensed NYC Tour Guide, and formerly worked for Gray Line and other tour companies. She's very smart, well informed, and could answer almost all of our many questions. Although her academic training includes post-graduate work in a more technical field, this is clearly what she loves & is passionate about. Very convenient, as it starts right at the Grand Ave/30 Ave subway stop on the NQ line. Highly recommended!

She took us on a fabulous tasting tour of Astoria, Queens where we sampled abundant amounts of delicious, fresh food from at least 6 different ethnic eateries while hearing about the neighborhood and its' history. The pace of the tour was just right as was the amount of food and variety of it. For a bunch of very picky eaters, we all expanded out palates and actually enjoyed the unique offerings. Dawn was really great about customizing the tour to our needs. Everyone is still talking about this adventure and is planning to revisit Dawn and her other tours in the near future.

Sam is very educated on the history of NYC along with its architecture. He keeps the tour interesting with fun anecdotes and historical stories. On the Foundations of New York tour, we did 2-2.5 hours of walking around lower Manhattan: Battery Park to the Customs House to NY Stock Exchange to Trinity Church to the 9/11 Memorial to City Hall..just to name a few! The tour was extremely comprehensive and Sam knew such great details about each of the spots. Sam is also very friendly and answered several questions that we had along the way. All in all, this tour was a great experience - we learned so much about lower Manhattan and its history as well as the architecture. It was fun and interesting. Sam is a great guide who is knowledgeable, friendly and clearly loves what he is doing. It was a great value for everything! We are definitely looking forward to doing more of Sam's tours in the future!

Mike brought Chinatown's history to life and taught my friends and me so much. Hearing the stories of Chinatown's past and learning about the history hidden within its streets made for a truly unique experience. It felt personal, authentic, and engaging rather than scripted. The Food Tour with Bernice was equally fantastic. She introduced us to a variety of restaurants and dishes I probably wouldn't have tried on my own, and every stop was as delicious as the last. Beyond the food, Bernice shared the history and culture behind each business, making it feel like much more than a simple food tour. I left with a greater appreciation for the neighborhood, its people, and its history. Both tours were informative, fun, and thoughtfully put together. Her well-rounded intellect is one the easy attributes to recognize off the bat. Needless to say, her sense of humor, & constant playfulness were fun to enjoy. Not sure what has happened to Gate 1 Travel. We had 5 wonderful tour experiences with them in the…read morepast, but our tour in Australia last month had serious issues and the customer service response, both during the challenges and after the fact, has been abysmal. I am still fighting with insurance, bought through Gate 1, over the settlement for 1.5 days of lost itinerary due to 30+ hours of flight delays. no help at all from Gate 1. So disappointing. I strongly recommend choosing another tour company unless significant changes in customer service are implemented.
