Being a Carolina girl, this speaks of home to me. An icy Cheerwine in the biggest size cup that they have along with a Cook out tray and I'm happy. The burgers are great and you can smell them cooking in the grill. We like their quesadillas. Nothing fancy, just good. A Carolina style hot dog or hamburger is always the way to go. So many shake flavors to choose from and you can create you own as well. They are super thick and must be eaten with a spoon. Gourmet, this is not! My heart hurts to write this review. I grew up in NC where Cookout and Bojangles are a fast food staple, so I knew exactly what to expect and I was really excited to hear there was a Cookout on Lakeshore. Cookout is known for its quick and cheap hang over food. The portion sizes are known to be huge for how little you pay. This location was such a disappointment. The service was extremely slow. There was only two cars ahead of me when I ordered. I ordered a tray and a milkshake and it took over 20 minutes. By the time I got my food, it was cold and soggy. They slightly messed up my order as well, giving me the wrong sides. The only thing I was able to enjoy was the milkshake. I'm guessing all of this has to be due to some kind of staff shortage. I will be back to give this place another chance, but I am so disappointed by this first visit. read more

I stopped by Cookout tonight to order a chili cheese dog. I haven't been to this location before and I was surprised it was so busy. The hotdog I ordered was pretty good and had tons of chili and cheese. It was a little messy, but luckily napkins were added to my bag. The staff was very nice and prompt with my order. The staff working the windows wore masks and ensured my order was correct. I would recommend this location to any of my friends wanting a quick affordable meal. Food here is always fresh and tastes like it's fresh off the grill. My only critique is the hotdog could've been presented a little better. This was my first time actually eating food from here and I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the tray which consisted of a big double burger or chicken quesadilla fries and a milkshake. The burger was for my daughter and it reminded you of the burger patties from McDonald's. I don't see why it's called the big double burger because nothing about it was big. I tasted a piece and it did have a nice grilled flavor, but that's about it. The fries were hot and good. The chicken quesadilla I was amazed by it, and not in a good way. When I opened it I noticed how flat it was. When I picked it up it was very flimsy. I opened it up to see what it looked like and there was only one piece of chicken on the quesadilla. Been here many times. It's always good. It's affordable. The tray is superb. You get an entree, two sides, and a drink for $6. You can sub a shake in your tray for only $1 more! 40+ milkshakes listed plus there are many off-menu shakes (pro tip: try the banana split!) Milkshakes are thick. Eat with a spoon unless you want to wait for it to melt a bit. Most of these reviewers have no clue what they're talking about. This is five star fast food. read more

This cookout has improved a lot! They've hired a lot of new really awesome people and the service in general has improved. The food is about what you'd expect, mid tier fast food bites (though I will defend that Cajun char grilled chicken breast and milkshake to death), but for 8$ it's good deals. It's cheap, and pretty good. I am a Cookout newbie, so I ordered the platter consisting of a big double with cheese, my two sides were chicken nuggets and cheese bites. They were skimpy on the nuggets-I only got 3! I also got Cajun fries and a mint chocolate chip shake. I enjoyed the platter, the fries were just ok, and the shake was so thick I set it aside to melt a little since I couldn't drink it right away. But it was a good shake! My constructive feedback: The fries should have more Cajun seasoning than one small shake just on the top, and I wasn't offered any sauce for the chicken nuggets or fries, and there were no sauces by the drink area. I spied people with BBQ sauce and ketchup, so I know they have sauce. And a side of chicken nuggets should be more than three! I went here with my boss as we had both been excited about this place opening. It was crowded, of course, and by the time my lunch companion and I got our food, there was nowhere to sit, and any table that opened up was immediately nabbed by someone else waiting, so we had to take our food back to the office. Not a super ideal situation but not the worst either. I spent about $7 on a "tray" for lunch and was pretty satisfied by the end of the meal, mostly because the portions on the tray are by no means hearty. Still, it seems like you can barely get lunch for less than $10 these days, so I guess it's not a totally bad thing in a world of over-sized portions. I got the quesadillas, the white cheddar bites, and a corndog. As someone else said, you can't really find the chicken on the quesadilla, and I noticed mine wasn't grilled so much as heated up so the cheese would melt, but it still had a good, spicy flavor. The white cheddar bites were amazing, though there were about six. The corndog was pretty good too, the batter on the outside was crispy and not soggy like some fast food corndogs can be. My boss got the spicy chicken sandwich, and said it was good for a chicken sandwich but was not really spicy. He also got a bacon wrap and the white cheddar bites and said they were pretty good. We did not go for milkshakes this time around but I definitely look forward to trying one on a future visit. I normally have pretty good luck at this location, but I didn't tonight. I went to Cookout for a cheap, fast dinner for myself and my boyfriend: 2 chili dogs and some chicken nuggets. However, I wish I had checked my order before I left, because I instead received 2 corn dogs, not enough nuggets and a small fry. It was extremely frustrating because I had already waited over an hour for this food. It definitely was not worth the wait in my opinion. The food was cold when I got it too. Taste was okay once I reheated it. The staff did wear masks, but they were not worn correctly. Sustainability could've been better, as all the meals were served in styrofoam and an excess of paper bags. Overall, I don't think I'll be revisiting any time soon. read more

Wow....wish these were in the western states. So cheap. Got a meal for two for less than $20. My husband got a burger and a drink, and it was so good we went through the drive thru again and got another one. The trays are a great deal but the sides are small. We did order one fry that they forgot to put in the bag. The sides are sorta small, ordered hush puppies and cheese curds and only got 4 of each. Super friendly staff, dude at the window even asked us if there was anything else we needed before shooing us away like most fast food places. Order was rung up wrong and didn't repeat my order once I got to the window and even asked as they took my card. Asked for a cheeseburger tray and got paid for a doublecheeseburger with no cheese, yes, how did that mistake happen. Then a second person gave me an attitude because I stated that I wanted both drinks with no ice and was I charged for a large. The first lady apologized and said no, theyve ran out of their medium size cups and refixed me drink. Hate posting such a negative review because I generally enjoy Cookout from when I was living in North Carolina and Cookout seemed to be everywhere. My visit to the Cookout off Lakeshore didn't go well at all. The drive thru backed up while I was there. The car in front of me appeared to have multiple orders and food orders and moneys kept being passed back and forth through the window for almost 10 minutes. Once I got to the window, my order (2 small shakes) was wrong and the young lady seemed extremely flustered. Another employee corrected the order and handed me my order through the window without even acknowledging me - it was really just a hand coming through the window with a shake. It started before I went in the door when an employee came out, didn't have to courtesy to hold the door, and went to talk to her friends in the parking lot. Then I get inside and a staff member or two glances my way. They never said anything and never offered to take my order. The staff also looked unkept and covered in tattoos. I went back and they remade my order. No apologies. I get back to the hotel again...wrong drink and food was terrible. For a few months now I've heard all the hype about the cookout coming too birmingham. I've heard it's cheap and good. Price doesn't matter because I will pay for good food, but this, I don't want even if it's free. First off the price is average, but I could've had a MUCH better meal for this same price or less. The burger, NOTHING special. The fact that it's flame broiled reminded me of Burger King; that's not a bad thing but I'd prefer BK! The onion rings were fried well but nothing special at all. Lastly, the Push Up flavored ice cream and vanilla mixed was good. I didn't finish my food, but instead threw it away. Money wasted. Here's the thing. Outside one of the employees asked if I enjoyed it, I said no and there was no response. She didn't ask why, she continued to speak with another customer that said she enjoyed it. I get on my car and my food comes back up. I felt horrible (thank God I had a cup in my car). I made it home only to sit in my car and vomit for another 10 minutes or so (I couldn't make it in the house). I will never go back there...period!! I have eaten at the one in Hattiesburg and the one in Tuscaloosa. Both were great. The one here in Birmingham does NOT measure up. I was in line for 50 minutes. That is not a typo. 50 minutes. I wanted to leave the line, but I was in the inside lane so I was trapped. By the time I finally got my food, the fries were completely cold. Fries should be the last thing that go in the bag, right before you give it to the guest. I guess they put them in there when I placed my order. Terrible experience. I visited Cookout after my husband and I waited too late in the evening and most places had already closed. Both drive-thru lines were wrapped around the building so we decided to go to the walk-up window! Did you know you can do that? Yep! I ordered a BLT with fries and a drink and my husband had a double cheeseburger with fries and a drink. Our food was hot, came out quick and the order with accurate. My BLT was good but I wish there were a little bit more bacon on my sandwhich. This is my second time ordering the BLT and it was as good as the first time.
