First, it has plenty of hiking trails and paths for scenic walks for families, including dogs. It has two well-maintained tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, pool and plenty of picnic tables. It even has a big playground for the kids, and a pool. I love taking a walk at the paths, especially towards the top of the hill, and towards the back of the golf course. The park is dog friendly as well. I love taking my pup for a walk here. If you go now, they have banners honoring local military veterans, and war heroes. They also just added a memorial for heroes who served in wars. It's definitely worth checking out! There's a fee for parking on some weekends, but weekdays are free.

They've built a new playground near the pavilion that is pretty awesome, they've added more benches along the trails and they've done some upgrades to the ball field. The ball field still needs improvement and the road needs to have the craters filled so hopefully the town will take that on this spring. No dogs allowed on the playground itself, so if you bring one you are stuck also sitting along the edges watching.

Even nearly 18 months after it opened, it still was graffiti free and looking nice. Plus, it overlooked the river and TWO different sets of railroad tracks. Seeing three trains go by while were were playing on it certainly boosted this railfan's review! (And, unbelievably, my cousin who was on one of the Amtrak trains and lives in NYC spotted us train watching as she rolled by!) We traveled over from the Corning Preserve to Quackenbush square, walked around a bit, and came back. Our toddler liked it when we kicked a rubber ball along the walkway (hot tip: if you kick it and he doesn't get it, you better run because it will roll down the hill!) There wasn't a lot of shade but it was overcast that day so it worked out. It isn't a huge "park" but it sure beats a barely used highway ramp which is what it used to be. The fact that you can get a nice, different perspective of the downtown area makes it a fun place to explore for a little while. And it is free. And... it is near trains. Don't wake me... I dragged my son in with me and he wants to make a trip back to this park already. There are multiple softball grounds and has some historic significance which I have no clue. I got my exercise, my son had fun and that is all that matters. I can't call it a "large park" because the areas where you can do stuff (a playground, a seven-move fitness area) don't take up a lot of real estate. It is, perhaps, a perfect sized park. We came for the playground area and it was a lot of fun. There were many slides and steps for kids to climb on, but I can say it wasn't built for toddlers. School age kids would appreciate the reach and engage with the challenges more. There was some candy on the ground (and bees... boo) but we were able to avoid them. Swings and ladders provided lots of areas to play. It is built on wood chips, not that rubber stuff, if that matters to you. It looks like this area was an old school, as a very large round paved area could have been a running track at one time. Another large, rectangular area seems the right size for a basketball court area. Now, both are just flat pavement. The area is bounded by several hills which likely would be great for sledding. There were also several picnic tables for snacking on, and a water fountain which was sadly enclosed with a fence. Parking was plentiful. This seems like such a nice playground in seemingly the middle of nowhere. I hope more kids discover and enjoy it.

There's a strange thing about life with kids in the Capital Region. There are tons of playgrounds, but they are almost always empty. I think kids largely play in their back yards. Otherwise they all seem to go to The Crossings in Colonie. So sometimes, you may have this long and narrow park to yourself. But that's fine. There are a lot of trees, so parents can have shade. And in the summer, there is a spray zone, where kids can come with bathing suits and cool off from the hot hot heat.

At the time, I would bring my text books and read them here while feeding the squirrels that would sit on the nearby posts. Active train tracks run by the park, so I would also see trains go by now and again. A baseball diamond was occasionally used for Little League games providing additional distractions from my studies. Since then, I have brought my wife here and just recently my son. We had had picnics here, walked with our dogs here, enjoyed food truck festivals here, and I still on occasion just drop by to get some peace and quiet. They had pavilions (which I assume you rent from the Village), picnic tables, a gazebo, basketball courts, a playground for kids, and lots and lots of green grass. Wonderful!
