But I did finally stop by for some of the famous desserts/ ice cream. Service was great. The young man at the service window made a number of very helpful suggestions, especially after I mentioned that I've begun to show a bit of dairy sensitivity if I have ice cream late at night. So I tried the nondairy Dole pineapple whip in a cup. It was delicious. My friend had a double scoop of chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. That was delicious, too. I tried some. There were many customers. Since Guptill's is widely considered a Capital Region institution, I'm slightly embarrassed that I haven't visited before. The ice cream stand is large and clean. The staff is young and courteous. I can't explain why I haven't been to the rink yet since I skate pretty well. Perhaps I've just been busy. Still, this was a good start. As you might expect from the name, they are indeed owned by the same folks who own the Ugly Rooster Cafe's. Their menu offers over 25 flavors of soft-serve. If you prefer hard ice cream, 8 flavors of Perry's are also available. Given how small their site currently is, they can't possibly have dispensers for every flavor. So what I believe they do is make smaller batches of a flavor to order and then dispense it into your cone or cup. For the flavor I ordered, Amaretto, you'd never know that might have been how it was made, the flavor and consistency were quite good, and I'd definitely order it again. And for the inevitable comparisons: Flavors - more of them, probably not changing as frequently, see above on how they can have so many available. Flavor was distinct without being overwhelming. Size - You definitely don't get as much for your order. I'm hoping that as they grow as a business, they can be more cost competitive. Consistency - Maybe not quite as dense; on a very hot day, be prepared to lick fast. Still, this is a great add to the ice cream community. And since I'm more likely to be traveling in this area as opposed to going up to Lake George, this is an easy, "Yes, let's go!" for me.

But their ice cream also remains an occasional treat and not a frequent thing. Everyone has their own price point for ice cream, and getting dishes or cones of ice cream for a family would add up, compared to buying a half-gallon of some brand at a grocery store. Your mileage can and will vary on this.
