Wanted to update this review because things have changed. 1. If you pay with anything other than cash, you are charged a fee ($1+). I am tired of companies pushing their expenses onto their customers! 2. Flavor of cupcakes have not improved. They are still some of the heaviest dense cakes I have ever had with the most sugary over the top amount of frosting (which does not taste good). The crumb of cupcakes are supposed to be moist and light/airy not dry and heavy/dense! 3. Cookies are still the best item sold as far as flavor. 4. Prices have increased quite a bit (plus the extra charges for paying in other forms than cash!): I stand by my 1 star rating and will not be returning. Cupcake by design has fine cupcakes. It is located next to Five Guys near Ramblewood Apartments. They have bad customer service and an arrogant sense about them. THey offer punch cards (not if you buy multi packs- only single cakes) for buy 10 get one free. THey also have other treats besides cupcakes like chocolates and brownie looking things. I generally do not support places with bad service so if it is a convenience thing while going to Five Guys or Chipotle then come here, but other wise support a nice business. Cookies by design is a cute little bakery with lots of cookies and cupcakes to choose from. They also have cute little dog biscuits if you have any pets. The workers have been friendly the couple of times that we have come in. The first time we came, we had a sugar cookie ($1.75) and a cake batter cookie ($1.35). Both were okay - a little on the drier side. We also had a cupcake ($3.49) -- the cupcakes are SO cute and look delicious, but the taste is average so I would say they are overpriced and would likely not purchase again. They are on the dry side and not a lot of flavor. They did offer free samples of mini cupcakes the second time we came in which was a really nice touch. We also tried the chocolate chip cookie sandwich $2.25 -- the presentation was great, it looked delicious, but the cookie was not very soft and all of the buttercream gushed completely out of the sides the first bite you take and was lacking overall flavor. The shop is a super cute concept, smells delicious, everything looks amazing, but the sweets are just lacking in flavor and a bit overpriced is the reason I can only rate 4 stars. While traveling in the area we wanted some dessert. And found this great little cupcake shop. I had the caramel apple cupcake which was so yummy and has some nuts in it and it's delicious. When you walk in the store it smells immediately likes a wonderful Bakery I could smell them baking cupcakes in the back. Now they aren't the most inexpensive cupcakes but they surely are delicious. It's a super cute little shop with good items to choose from. They have cookie dough, cookies, cupcakes, dog treats, cheesecake bars, candy, etc. They also do custom orders and really cute cookie bouquets. They aren't too pricey, the cupcakes are huge so I'd say it's worth the money. A little too sweet so you can't eat the whole thing and I usually end up scraping half the frosting off. I've tried almost every cupcake flavor and haven't had a bad one yet. The only one I wouldn't get again is the maple bacon one because it just wasn't my thing. Another important thing to note is that the cake is not overtly sweet, which balances really well with the sweetness of the frostings. Lots of standard options but my fav by far is the Peanut Butter Bacon cupcake. They put bacon in the cake AND it topped the perfectly whipped peanut butter frosting. Their red velvet with cream cheese frosting is the best I've had at any establishment (I'm friends with a pastry chef, and hers still come out a tad bit ahead - have to put that in here!) and the double chocolate cupcake was super moist, decadent and rich. I have noticed if they only have one left of a certain variety, it often means that they haven't made those in awhile and they tend to be a touch dry. The cream cheese frosting leaves a hint of bitter aftertaste which adds fuel to the already disaster of a cupcake it already is. The only saving grace is the presentation. The girl that took my order was VERY rude and when I used my punch card for my free cupcake she told me I would not beable to get more punches since I was getting more than 5 cupcakes. When I asked why she informed me that you get a discount on 6 or more. I was fine with this until she took off my free one bringing my order down to 5 cupcakes so NO discount AND no punches; so basically I was screwed out of 5 punches! This store is awesome! My friend had his appendix removed and we were sending him cookies from GR to Kalamazoo but it turned out he was able to go home sooner than expected. I called the store and asked them what my options were. The lady who I spoke with (I'm sorry! I do not recall your name) was super helpful! She took their house address and called the driver to redirect him to their home instead of the hospital! We were so thankful they were able to accommodate a late request like that! I placed an order for delivery in a hospital and the order was never delivered. When I called to inquire (2 days later when I realized the recipient never got it), they said they didn't know what happened. They had the print-out of the order, but apparently just never processed it. Once they agreed to process a refund, I had to wait 2+ weeks (actually still waiting, but was told it is being processed) for it to hit my credit card. They offered me a measly 10% discount on a future order and a very faint, insincere apology. Had it not been for 2(!) big mistakes (not processing the order and not notifying me AND delay in credit card refund), I may consider placing another order with them. But, I really wanted to send a special thank you so I thought I'd give it another chance. Bad choice! The person at the front acted like I was bothering her, and indicated they didn't have any thank you cookies ready. I must have had a confused look on my face, because then she said they could decorate one but it would take 15-20 minutes. She was looking like she didn't want to be bothered, so I didn't trust what else might have been included in my cookies because she seemed so annoyed. I submitted an order admittedly late on Tuesday for next day delivery on Wednesday, I paid the premium for the next day delivery. I received my order confirmation on Tuesday night and a delivery confirmation on Wednesday at 6am. Then at 8:30am I got I call saying they in fact could not be delivered until Thursday. I was so disappointed. It was a last minute scramble on Tuesday to find a place that would deliver, so when I found cookies by design through a google search for "Same Day Delivery", placed the order and got a confirmation email, I breathed a sigh of relief. Only THEN did I find out that sigh was premature and in fact there would be no cookies for my dad's birthday. So bummed and disappointed. I ended up doing a same day edible arrangement, which are delicious, but definitely not cookies.
