That said... if you're hoping to leave with the confidence to open your own omakase counter in a strip mall, this is not that. A lot of the components were pre-made or prepped ahead of time, and there wasn't a ton of actual teaching around technique, ingredients, or the food itself. So while you do "make sushi," it's less MasterClass and more cute, hands-on dinner activity. But honestly? That's not necessarily a bad thing. Not every class needs to end with a knife skills certification and a spiritual relationship with sushi rice. Bottom line: Come here if you want a fun, low-pressure experience for a date night, girls' night, or team outing. She was quick to respond to my questions before the event. Chef Rose greeted us at the door and welcomed us into a fully prepped kitchen. Chef Rose got to work, putting us to work. It was AMAZING. We made the most amazing meal, and we learned so much as well. My husband is a foodie and loves to cook, so I was slightly worried he would be like this is lame. I asked whether she could accommodate me (a vegetarian) and my mom (passionate meat eater) and Veena said absolutely. I sent Veena a handful of my Mom's favorite recipes (including a more obscure and apparently heavily British dish called Lamb Pasanda) and she created a meal plan that included everything and more. We showed up and Veena greeted us warmly. Her kind energy and passion for her food and culture were clear. She never made us feel like we were asking silly questions and kept the experience light and fun. She was basically willing to go into as much detail or as little detail as we wanted. It was a very affordable class considering it was a 3 hour long private sessions for the two of us. We even went home with tons of leftovers, a spice kit (black cardamom smells amazing), and recipes for our dishes! Veena took pictures of our experience and offered her help for any future cooking questions we had. She said she could always offer a suggestion for a substitution (ex. if we needed a dairy free version) or questions on grocery stores to find certain ingredients. Thank you Veena!!! Quick summary PROS: very adaptable, super warm and kind energy, affordable, fun, not intimidating, yummy food. Veena was a wonderful teacher! We drove to her industrial kitchen in San Mateo on a Saturday. She offered us some delicious tamarind rice and tea and then we began the lesson. She was very patient with us and offered lots of helpful tips. The food we made was delicious, and I am hoping I can bring my sons along for our next lesson.
