We were gifted a 50-year-old Gould spinet upright piano. Hey, a baby grand it ain't, but I was looking to get my 5-year-old daughter some lessons and a free piano is a good place to start. Though a bit flat the little guy sounded okay even though it hadn't been tuned in a decade or more. So I called Nathan of Cook's Piano Service. Nathan showed up on a Saturday afternoon right on time (after adjusting his schedule by 30 minutes to accommodate our family's brief delay returning from morning errands). Before getting started tuning the piano, Nathan gave a nice lesson covering the piano components for both my young daughters, which they enjoyed. Then Nathan spent the next 3.5 hours going over and through the piano bringing its previously flat tone back to a warm and bright tone that wasn't present before. I'm not a piano teacher or a musician, so I can't say that this is a process I've been through numerous times before. But I can tell you Nathan is professional, courteous, and clearly dedicated to his craft. Throw in that he's good with kids and his rates are very fair given his attention to detail, and I can't see why I'd ever use anyone else. Now if my daughter takes to this piano, maybe one day soon Nathan will be tuning that baby grand. read more

I've been playing piano for almost 30 years and cannot recall a better piano service/tuning than the one I've just had with Nathan. His demeanor is friendly and professional. He was communicative throughout the process. He arrived right on time. And then, there's the quality of his work, which is...STELLAR. Mr. Cook was great to work with when he inspected my used piano when I purchased it. He also did a fantastic job tuning my piano - wow!! Top notch. My piano teacher uses Cook's Piano Service as well. The piano always sounds so bright and beautiful when I go to my lessons. Now my piano at home sounds just as delightful! I'm so happy with his piano tuning. Mr. Cook goes above and beyond in terms of service. He makes it easy to set up appointments. He was very cool when I screwed up our appointment time. My cleaning people showed up when he came tune my piano (also totally my screw up) and Mr. Cook was very kind and forthright about what he needed in order to do a good job. He was kind to me, my cleaning staff, and my dog (who thought he might accompany the piano tuning which a little singing and barking of his own). I asked for a consultation regarding my broken damper pedal. Well this is difficult to type, but what must be said must be said. I've no doubt Nathan is a subject matter expert in his work with piano tuning. However, for whatever reason, he and I did not connect well and one misunderstanding led to another on an appointment & scheduling. Fine enough...details don't really matter, as we must both believe the other was thoughtless in missing an appointment (I know I did). I'm willing to move on and start over, just trusting in his work product and pride in it. So, per his suggestion, I called him back in January to schedule another appointment after the busyness of the holidays was over for both of us. And here's the reason for my writing. I told him my mother was quite ill and I might have to leave to see about her *or* to attend her funeral (she's 91) so I needed to work around that factor. In my mind, full disclosure and trying to get an appointment scheduled we could both meet. At that point he was abrupt, saying he wouldn't book anything tentative under these circumstances and referred to "several times I've missed appointments" and this wasn't going to work. I couldn't believe it. Truly couldn't. You're so in demand you can't be courteous and respectful in speaking with me about asking to HIRE YOU FOR YOUR SERVICES, and book another time? I kept thinking he would do the decent thing and apologize for his tone & comments, and waited. Silence on the line. Not a single conciliatory word. I hung up, saying I didn't know what to say. Readers, I can promise you I CERTAINLY didn't miss appointments "several times". He came to my house *once* for an estimate & we talked about what the piano needed, booked another appointment for followup work, and in that followup time we got wires crossed on one appointment--this irritated me as much as it did Nathan as it's a pet peeve of mine when people waste my time, and this I understand. But nothing doing, and this left a really bad taste in my mouth. The rudeness and tone in his voice after I spoke about my mother was inexcusable. So, just an FYI....if this sort of thing doesn't bother any of you that's your decision. I've had enough of the attitude in Austin, this town where I've lived since the 60s, and thought others should know what I encountered. I wouldn't want his negativity and cruelty in my house if he worked on my piano for free. Really unfortunate situation. read more

Nathan came by and tuned my 50+ year old Wurlitzer today. It hadn't been tuned for a very long time and playing in the higher range was especially painful to the ear. My piano now plays with a brightness it didn't have before. He did a fantastic job bringing it back in tune. He is very nice and patient with your kids if they happen to be around while tuning. My 2 year old had fun matching the pitch of some of the notes Nathan played while working on the piano and Nathan was more than happy to show him what he was doing. I have two pianos. The Steinway upright, 90 years old, that came to me through the family, and a 100+ year old Webber that was probably headed to the landfill until I acquired it a few years ago. They needed a LOT of work and I did not have an unlimited budget to totally restore them from the ground up. Despite being a super-perfectionist, Nathan was undaunted and we had excellent communication for maximum benefit without breaking the bank. The Steinway has been put into fine shape, but the other piano, the Webber, which had been strictly a "second tier" extra for when there is more than one pianist, has been greatly transformed and even surpasses the Steinway in certain aspects. The pianos are both quite different, but each is now a super pleasure to beat out the blues on! Nathan is friendly, passionate about his vocation, and more than happy to share his knowledge. He even got me a tuning socket so I can do an emergency touch up if a 100 year old tuning pegs slips. read more

I'm normally just a Yelp reader but today I was compelled to make an exception. I have called many piano tuner's and always felt like I was leaving a car sales lot. By this I mean, there just seemed to be a lot of fast talking and 'extra' and being that I am new to the piano world, I wouldn't know the difference. Nathan was referred to me by a pianist and I called and he just has this ease about him, so he was hired to do what needed to be done a year ago, get this old piano tuned. Nathan did an amazing job bring life back into my 30 year old Kohler & Campbell piano. This piano was a gift from my parents when I was in the 1st grade and while its more of an entry level instrument, to me it sounds amazing. Nathan set right to work and pointed out one concern regarding a bridge supporting some of the bass strings. Our old petite piano has been somewhat of a mystery for many years: Where did it come from? Why is it so small? And what would it take to make it work? Though it's been played and "tuned" by many a friend, it was far from fully-functioning when Nathan decided to take it on. Many keys didn't play at all, and the rest were rarely in tune. Nathan tuned my piano which had not been worked on for over 6 years. With great care and patience, he made it sound beautiful again! The piano has a lot of sentimental value since it was a wedding gift from my best friend and had belonged to her mother who was a musical theater instructor. Her mother bought the piano when she was in college and had maintained it meticulously. I was feeling guilty for not keeping it tuned and even worse for not using it. I was recently given a great 100 plus year old upright piano by my sister, who had been gifted it by an old friend. She had never taken the time to tune or repair it while she had it, and honestly it had probably been sitting in someone's garage for years before that. It sounded terrible (a whole step flat) but I still had hope that it could be nursed back to health. When Nathan first came over to meet my piano, he said that there was little chance that it would be tunable, but he gave it a shot and worked his magic anyway. By all accounts, my piano should have been given a death sentence that day, but thanks to Nathan it sounds amazing against all odds. He's a miracle worker!
