All of the nurses, doctors, even the front desk employees were nice. The er doctor who I was assigned to was very knowledgeable and even reassured me. He was very nice and kind. He explained everything well and answered all of my questions. He even let me know that it's difficult to find a pcp here in ma. He told me to come back to the er in the meantime if any problems arose (which thankfully I didn't need to) until I found a pcp. He told me to call around for a pcp and to take whatever next available appt was available, which ended up being 4 months later for me. Zero effort, zero concern or regard for your situation, zero involvement in understanding your medical emergency or how they can help relieve your immediate situation. I woukd avoid this northampton hospital at all costs.. my wife has been laying facedown in the lobby on the floor fir 45 minutes with zero cincern from 5 woman sitting behind the check in glass. I went to er with chest pain. Er doc didn't acknowledge or even tell me my electrolyte panels were way off. I read it on my discharge papers. Consequently I was in er two days later. I had to drop off lab samples at their Deerfield location. I arrived at 10:20 AM on a Friday. The waiting room was packed. I was told it would be a very long wait to simply drop off samples. I reiterate I was not there for actual lab work. This is ridiculous. I was only dropping off my collected specimens. I came back at 1 PM the same day. Sadly (my fault) they were on lunch break from 12:15 until 1:30. Wow. Middle of the day at a major lab and they shutdown for an hour and fifteen minutes? But whatever. To continue, FINALLY, at 2 PM she came out to get my sample even though I was the literally only person in the waiting room and supposedly they came back a half hour earlier. Never again. I will change doctors if I have to instead of being forced to use this facility again. [[HIGHLIGHT]]During my visit, I was seen by a nurse named Bryan Greenspan. Unfortunately, I found the communication during the consultation to be rushed and unclear.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As a result, I left the appointment with only a partial understanding of my condition and was left with the impression that my symptoms--specifically blurry vision--could indicate a serious issue requiring emergency attention. Following the nurse's advice, I went to the emergency room the next morning after waking up with continued blurry vision. I waited over four hours to be seen, only to be informed by the attending physician that the advice I had received the previous day was inaccurate and that my situation did not warrant an ER visit. In addition to the inconvenience and emotional stress, I incurred unnecessary costs, including a co-pay for an emergency room visit and payment for a prescribed medication that I later learned was not needed and may have worsened my symptoms by drying out the affected eye. I believe this situation reflects a serious lapse in clinical judgment and communication. I strongly urge that further training be considered for Nurse Greenspan, as providing inaccurate or misleading medical advice--especially in a setting such as urgent care--can have serious consequences for patient health and well-being. I woke up Monday a week ago with some red patches on my left arm. No itching, no burning, no scabs. I waited until Thursday to see if the patches would fade, and since they didn't, I called around to find a doctor. My regular care providers were booked up until the end of time, so when one of the NPs at one office suggested that I go to Urgent Care, [[HIGHLIGHT]]I made an on-line appointment at Cooley-Dickinson hospital and was booked into a 5PM appointment that same day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I attended the appointment, had to wait only a few minutes to be seen, an attendant came to measure my vital signs (heart still beating, lungs still breathing, etc.) and the attending NP came in, looked at the arm and said "tinea", sent a prescription to my pharmacist, and I was on my way. This review is to inform Kevin Whitney, DNP.RN,NRP, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton Massachusetts and Mass General Brigham in Boston of my surgical experience at Mass General Brigham in Boston, Mass on May 29th. A small bit of my medical history first. I'm a male of 75 years old under the care of Dr. James Arcoleo of Cooley Dickinson Medical Group and Hampshire Cardiovascular Associates. I was originally going to have Open Heart Surgery at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. The surgery was for repair a of leaky Mitral valve, replacement of my Aortic valve, a graft of my Ascending Aorta, a valve Excusion of my left Atrial Appendage, open Excison, Operative tissue Ablation and Reconstruction of my Atrial Extensive. So there was a bit to be done! I have been in Hampshire Cardiovascular Associates care for years with Dr. Arcoeo as my original Cardic doctor. So they have been watching my leaky Mitral valve get worst and my Ascending Aorta Aneursym get bigger. Through the years I've have had a tightness, pain and shortness of breath which was interfering with my work as a builder. I have had different great doctors through this group and was finally set up for surgery at Bay State Springfield. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As I see it, all along Dr. Arcoleo has been keeping tabs on me, and about a few months ago on a Saturday morning I received a personal call from Dr. Arcoleo pushing me to change my surgery to Mass General in Boston[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. As he explained it to me they had me down in Springfield for a Mitral valve replacement instead of a repair, the Mitrl valve is really part of the structure of ones heart and a repair is what is needed, not a replacement. Apparently at Baystare they do not have a Mitral valve specialist, where in Boston they do. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Living here in western mass it's a trip to Boston but I made the switch and I'm so very happy I did.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was treated like a Prince by all there. The care I received was not 10 Star but more like 20 star. I now am in my Eleventh day out of surgery and feeling like a new person. My surgeon Dr. David D'Alessandro, Cardic Surgern, Director of Heart Transplant at Mass General Brigham has a video online called " Heart Surgery: Standing on the shoulders of giants | David D'Alessandro | TEDxBeaconStreet ". Dr. D'Alessandro talks about the giants who came before him cardic surgery, butI will tell you that Dr. David D'Alessandro is a giant himself. This hospital used to be great long before the pandemic now they are slow like a sloth! [[HIGHLIGHT]]So far during the pandemic (and my today's recent visit) my experience has been left in the dark.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Last recent visit I was there for stabbing stomach pain. "Oh your totally fine" DISCHARGED! Today I went up there by ambulance due to burning back pain as well with pain in my right hip. Was I treated right away? Guess again and look at the rest of the views, no I was not. They sent me to the waiting room where 40 patients were waiting to be seen. The longest one patient was there for was at least 6 HOURS. After 3 hours of sitting and with my back pain shooting flames inside I finally got up and asked the receptionist how many people were ahead of me and she said 8! Now, wouldn't this make more sense to have the ambulance patients be seen first? Ambulance patients SHOULD BE A FIRST PRIORITY before anyone else. What really ticked me off was the hospital staff was letting more and more patients coming in by ambulance and waiting in the waiting room. There were no seats available except for wheelchairs. I left without being seen after 3 1/2 hours. What could improve the ED, is better organization, (instead of picking and choosing patients), hiring more professional doctors, or at least build a bigger hospital like Bay State. read more

Urgent Care Dept -- I was luckily there at a quiet time, and got admitted quickly and efficiently. I'd been suffering with a cough for a few days, and then fever, and could not get in with my regular PCP office. I was seen by a young PA, and had my reservations. However, she was very thorough, knowledgeable, and compassionate. She reviewed my history well, asked good questions, and tested for possible viruses, as well as a chest x-ray. Frankly , she was more thorough than a couple of docs I have seen at my regular practice! She prescribed appropriate meds and I felt well-served. read more

I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because my medical care was excellent. But my experience with the billing department was lousy. The scheduling nurse assured me my mammogram would be scheduled as routine (which would be free under my health insurance), with a couple of extra images to address an issue i was having. The bill I received said it was billed as diagnostic. The customer service department reviewed the bill and said "The correct code was used and it processed to your deductible. If you have an issue take it to your insurance company." I explained the discrepancy between this and what the scheduling nurse told me. I asked to speak to a supervisor because I wanted the feedback to go to the organization that their medical practice was saying one thing and their billing department something else. I was told the supervisor would call me back by the end of the week after calling the medical practice. This did not happen. Also, when I first called and asked to have the claim reviewed, I was explicitly told by customer service "Do not pay the bill. Wait until we review it and we'll rebill it to you." But in the long run, the clock never stopped ticking on the original bill. By the time I asked for the supervisor, I was told I was a short time away from being sent to collections. So I paid the bill to avoid that. It is hard enough to deal with insurance companies. But the billing department of the organization itself was dismissive, unsympathetic, dishonest, and didn't follow through. read more

Recently I saw a nurse practitioner at the Southampton urgent care facility because I was having severe tooth pain. It was the most disappointing and debasing experience I have ever had with a medical professional in my 40 years of life. The first moment I met Danielle Gould she asked me if I realized that the urgent care wasn't a dental clinic, like I was inconveniencing her. I told her that I was in severe pain and worried that my tooth may be infected, potentially requiring antibiotics. I was then informed that the clinic does not give out narcotic medications for tooth pain. I am unable to take nsaid medications so the reason I was seeking emergency care was to hopefully receive any kind of alternative treatment to tylenol or even just suggestions of how I could alleviate my severe pain. What I got was no care at all. I had to basically beg Ms. Gould to even look at my mouth. I was told that the tooth didn't look infected so antibiotics would likely not help. She did offer antibiotics only to placate me which I declined because I chose not to participate in irrelevant and potentially detrimental treatments I don't need. I was treated very poorly by this practitioner. From the moment we met she was confrontational, rude and uncaring. I honestly felt I was treated like less than a person. She spoke down to me the entire time, extremely condescending. Even her body language was hostile. I'm not sure if it was assumed that I am a drug seeker, but I have a feeling that I was discriminated against because of my history of mental illness. I have never abused drugs, but the point is not whether or not I got a narcotic pain reliever prescription. The point is that I needed care and what I received was judgment and disregard. After Ms.Gould had already clearly communicated that she would not be providing me any care she then began to question me about why I hadn't been to the dentist sooner if the tooth has been bothering me, asking in a somewhat aggressive way. Why did it even matter to her since I wasn't getting any treatment there? I've had a very hard time getting proper treatment from my medicaid dental clinic. You have to wait a month sometimes in between appointments so I've had multiple breaks of the repair they done which needs rerepair and so on. I've been trying to get this tooth fixed since last November. It's very difficult getting decent dentistry with state insurance. And This provider had zero compassion for my situation. She offered not one idea of how I could improve my emergent situation other than that I needed to see a dentist, as if that were unclear to me and it weren't also a sunday. I'm so disgusted with this experience. I worked for CDH/CDPA for several years and I can't believe your organization would hire such an ineffective, callous and rude person to staff a medical office. I will never ever go back to this clinic and somI probably won't go to CDH for anything at all. I'm so angry about how I was treated. People need to know because it's just not right. When Ms Gould pressed me about why I hadn't been to the dentist earlier (already having told me that i would receive no treatment) I communicated that I did not appreciate the way she was speaking to me, that she was being aggressive and it was inappropriate especially since she had decided not to help me. I even brought my dental records which Ms. Gould did not examine. When I conveyed my discomfort and shock at her immaturity in the room with me Ms. Gould just STARED right back at me, cold, saying nothing. I then told her that I was extremely disappointed with our interaction and that I would be leaving. I sought treatment at CDH urgen care and instead I was belittled by a nurse practitioner. read more

I was taken to Cooley Dickinson for being unsteady and light headed. I was admitted, and they proceeded to treat me for high blood pressure. I was an inpatient for several days, and several weeks later, I was told that I had had a heart attack, but no one mentioned that while I was an inpatient. I was also told later that there had been a heart cathereterization, but I have not received any documentation of that, but that is largely because the records department is run by Mass General. I will not go to Cooley Dickinson again. I found it odd that on the release documents they listed my personal care physician as someone I had never heard of, and listed my cardiologist as someone I had never met. I consulted with a cardiologist later, but he considered statements from ooley Dickinson as valid, so I am still suffering from their ineptitude. read more

Did NOT help to set up discharge to preferred rehab facility which was toured by friend, and had a bed available, but rather made arrangements without consultation and informed of transfer on weekend when facility admissions can NOT be altered. read more

Being given no pain management after a 6 hours waiting room wait... unacceptable! Another hour after brought back... unacceptable. Pain managed inappropriately until an hour before discharged... UNACCEPTABLE! The worst was being given a pregnancy test and ultrasound of ovaries.. WHEN YOU HAVE HAD A COMPLETE HYSTERECTOMY 6 years prior and it is documented well in your Cooley Medical records! They did not take me serious and were not proactive to treat my pain as they clearly couldn't do anything else for me or my pregnancy (sarcasm). read more

On Saturday nights, the most frequent patients admitted to the ER are those that suffer from alcohol intoxication. While it's something that's relatively common and not particularly life threatening, it's not something that should be taken lightly. Cooley Dickinson shows just how unprofessional they can be when handling patients such as these. I was the sober guardian/representative of one of my friends at this hospital, and they did the standard procedures. Recorded BMI, blood pressure, checked her pulse, and respiration. I believe they ran some blood as well. When all was said and done, she was left on a hospital bed in the middle of the main hallway. I understand budget is tight sometimes, but at least put them in a less accessible room part of the building. Maybe a different hallway even, but definitely not the first hallway I see when the door swings open. It's embarrassing for the patient and shows the lack of empathy present at Cooley Dickinson. But what really was the last straw for me was when I waited at the front desk asking how to proceed with payment. There were two receptionists (?) one clearly more experienced than the other. I asked how to proceed with payment, and the less experienced one wanted to defer to the other. We had to wait three minutes for her to finish her personal conversation with a coworker before getting an answer. Normally in another time and place, I would think it's a bit rude. But we are in a HOSPITAL! In the "EMERGENCY" room. My need was not urgent, but a patient behind me was suffering from what looked to be convulsions, and curled up in the fetal position on a wheelchair. What if her condition was life threatening? If her well-being depends on her getting the care she needed promptly and efficiently, she could have been in grave danger, and that conversation held by the receptionist is in my opinion part what should be held liable. Ultimately, I let them speak to the front desk first. I don't know much about the ins and outs of how a hospital works, but having an experience as negative as this cannot be the norm. If you see me bleeding out on the street, and send me to Cooley Dickinson, please pre-order my coffin from a local mortuary (#ShopLocal) because I know I'm not getting out alive. read more

Went to the ER for something simple. Waited 3 hrs and was never seen. We eventually left. Asked for a wait time @ 3hr point, the nurse said "I don't know." I understand not knowing for certain, but being unable to give ANY range to be seen after waiting 3 hrs is pretty piss poor. Pretty terrible experience overall. I've just recently finished a 6 week stint of radiation. I have to say the Radiation Ocology group is fabulous. The doctors, nurses and of course the techs who you see daily are so great. They're so compassionate and are always smiling. I've also had the unfortunate luck of experienceing the day surgery nurses as both a family member and patient. The nurses are great! Again I could not have had a more pleasant experience in a scary situation. Granted the ER can be busy and the wait can be long but I've been fortunate when bringing family to have dealt with mostly friendly staff. read more

Worst ER experience. I was 19 at the time and I started having constant sharp pains in my stomach and lower intestines area. After a couple of hours of the pain, I decided to go to the Cooley Dickinson ER assuming I had appendicitis. The staff ran blood work to find that I didn't have appendicitis, but that they didn't know what was wrong with me. They had me lying around for about 4 hours and in constant pain, with no regular updates or help. I asked the staff for advil or aspirin to help with my cramps, but the staff never brought anything. My girlfriend was with me as well and was studying for exams while also asking nurses for advil or aspirin - to which no one cared to give me anything. After 4 hours of lying around in their ER, with no help from staff, we only received answers like "We're not sure what's going on, we're still looking into it". Eventually I had enough and just walked out, which wasn't the proper thing to do, but I was dumb and 19 at the time. While I was walking out, the nurses were talking among themselves about me saying "Oh he's just some junky looking for pills" - as they all looked over at me as I walked out. I was a 19 year old kid in pain wanting to understand what was wrong with me and was asking for aspirin or advil. In the end it was likely an intestinal infection. I also didn't realize junkies looked for aspirin or advil in ERs. ER visits are not cheap - a junky likely cannot afford the $300+ visit cost I had to pay out for utterly terrible health care service. If you have a choice, go anywhere else. read more

Came in through the ER and was seen right away. Once the problem was identified after various tests, I ended up spending four days in the hospital. I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of the nursing staff and the personal attention that I received. I was treated in the ER on 5/8/2018. The triage nurse was rude and never looked at me once while asking many questions off of a computer screen. Never asked once how I was doing. I waited 5 hours in pain and the front desk didn't seem to care one bit and never addressed my name or update me. I was finally seen by an RN who was nice and compassionate likely the only one in that place. For her I am thankful but I would think twice about going there again. I had the worst experience at Cooley Dickinson hospital on 04/20/21. I was scheduled for an ultrasound. I arrived with my approved support person (who is fully vaccinated), as I have a mental health disability. I emphasize approved, because I called the hospitals scheduling number & made sure they were aware of this accommodation. The woman told me yes & took all of my support persons information for an easy check in. So I check in at the main entrance checkpoint, and say to the intake nurse (Laura G? she was wearing scrubs) "and this is my approved support person". The woman looks at me & says "CAN YOU NOT WALK OR TALK ON YOUR OWN?" When I tell you I felt my blood pressure rise, my face turn red & my eyes swell up, I am not lying. HOW DISHEARTENING is it that even "nurses" don't recognize mental health as a disability. The embarrassment & disrespect I felt made my testing experience that much more uncomfortable. The "head of radiology" man came out & said my support person was never approved & that I must have called the wrong number - which I have screenshot proof of the correct number (413-582-5000 option 3 for ultrasound) on the day of my appointment, and why would an incorrect number take mine & my support persons information? They did not allow my approved support person in with me until I voiced the situation, yet was told to come back at a later time as they would not accommodate me for my scheduled appointment. Do better with educating your staff, communication between departments & not hiring ignorant/rude people if you're going to have them as a check point at the entrance of your hospital. read more

So if you go to Cooley during Flu season be prepared to wait over 4 hours if you fall and have a head injury...exactly what happened to me when I fell getting into a tub/shower and the mat slipped. Went to ER - during flu season and waited in the waiting room for over 4 hours with a head injury - the nurse at the triage did not think this was important even though there was swelling and bruising already when I got to the ER in less than 10 minutes. Since this fall I have had major problems with balance - Baystate thought I had a TIA that Cooley never picked up because it was more important to treat patients with FLU who did not get a FLU SHOT over a patient with a head injury! 15 minutes after leaving Baystate passed out - had to have 8 stitches in my forehead, broke 2 bones in my lower eye socket along with the bone in my left nasal cavity - could not blow my nose for a month but this was not an emergency at Cooley! read more
