Would not recommend, as there are other organizations out there that allow you to get hospital experience without the exorbitant fees and the micromanaging. They have no problem scheduling you hours for them, but when you need anything from them, such as paperwork, suddenly it takes contacting this person or that person before you can get an answer. Also, leadership does not talk to each other about anything, so depending on who you talk to or how many people you talk to, you'll get several answers. Save your money and look elsewhere Update: My experience with COPE Health Solutions at Kaiser Irvine has been an absolute, unorganized disaster from top to bottom. If you are a student considering working with this site, save yourself the headache and steer clear. The administrative team operates with a complete lack of professionalism, routinely ghosting mandatory student paperwork requests for days and hiding behind endless excuses. When I requested a standard, single-page student evaluation form, I was ignored for nearly a hundred hours--double their own stated response window--forcing me to escalate the issue just to get a basic response. Instead of taking accountability for dropping the ball, leadership figures like Irene Wang and Abhi Ganapathy resorted to petty, vindictive games and tone-policing. When they finally processed the paperwork, they used an official student evaluation as a retaliatory tool, slapping a fabricated "below average" score on basic competencies just to spite a student who held them accountable. It is completely shocking and unacceptable that people aspiring to operate in healthcare management exhibit this level of childishness, poor communication, and zero accountability. I am guessing this kind of petty, retaliatory behavior is precisely why Kaiser Irvine decided to pull the plug on their partnership with these people. Avoid this organization at all costs. read more

I've done two sets of this program. The first time I did it with Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach and that went well. I got to know the staff and I was appreciated and received great value for my money from this. However my second time I did my hours with Kaiser Anaheim and that was the worst experience I've had. The problem wasn't the hospital but the COPE organization. Those leaders were hostile towards the students and sometimes outright cruel. Management didn't intervene and would send the information back to the person you had the issue with in the first place. Save your money and apply directly with Kaiser Hospital to do your volunteering for free through them. It'll save you money and a headache when dealing with this program. read more

I joined the COPE Health Scholars program during my undergrad, while I was getting my degree in Bioengineering. The program allowed me to gain hands on clinical care experience, while rotating throughout different departments in a hospital setting. I loved rounding on patients, taking vital signs, and working with many medical devices. My favorite department was the Radiology department! I also got a basic understanding of various departments and feel comfortable adapting to new environments. This program took my money and denied 200+ hours that I served on the hospital floor due to a claim from one staff member that she saw me leave my shift early. Nurses gossip a lot and some are very rude. I advise don't waist your money you can get better volunteer experience at other places for free. read more

The only way I can describe this program is that it is a waste of your money. In order to be apart of this program, a person will need to pay at least $225 (15 months), $395 (9 months), or $495 (3 months) plus a $20 application fee. They also fail to tell you that if you get in, you need to put a deposit down for your badge, any of the immunizations or screening that are mandatory, and CPR certification (if you do not already have it). It is ridiculous how much money a person will have to spend in order to get hands-on experience in the hospital. Altogether I am very disappointed with this program. I originally applied to be in the Winter 2018 cohort at St Joseph Hospital in Orange. The program never responded to my application regarding an interview. I contacted them and found out that I did get to the interview phase and had one day to get an interview in before the deadline. I should have taken this as a sign, but I really wanted to be in this program. I got a phone call interview (not the protocol). After the interview, I never heard anything from the program. I emailed them multiple times and eventually found out I was accepted into the program. I had less than a week to get a long list of immunization and screens that would take at least 2 weeks to complete. Because of this, I had to defer to the Spring 2019 cohort. Once I thought I got into the program I found out on training day that I wasn't in the program yet. They put you through hell and give bazar situations (I never encountered any of them when in the program) that you need to pass. If you didn't, you were dismissed from the program. Keep in mind you already paid for the program. Somehow I made it through the 2 training days. But that wasn't the end of all my problems with the program. COPE Health Solutions is absolutely terrible at communication. I dealt with this problem the ENTIRE time I was there. For the first how many emails, I would not receive them. I didn't mind it originally, but later on, I realized this was a problem. During my first rotation, I did not receive the form to pick your next department. I didn't know anything about this until one of the health scholars asked me about it. I contacted the program and many emails later they sent it to me. Apparently they sent the email out 2 weeks before I got it. Another problem I faced was that the directors do not trust any of the scholars. One time one of the directors claimed they saw me at the cafeteria during a shift. During that shift, they started to question me in an aggressive way (ganged up on me). I had no idea what was going on. When I clocked out of my shift I noticed that they altered my hours. I went to talk to them and they claimed they couldn't do anything about it and I would need to talk to my department coordinator. This was so stupid because the person I talked to about my hours originally was one of the people questioning me earlier in my shift. Thankfully I graduated from the program this past December. I am still waiting on my certificate of completion even though I got an email from the alumni coordinator that the certificates were in. I went over there (my transportation is Lyft/ Uber) late January, the graduation email said they will only be 2-3 weeks after graduation, only to find 3 directors scrabbling to not find the certificates. Later I get an email for the alumni coordinator (on the same thread she said the certificates were in) saying that they weren't in. I hope I'm part of the email thread when they mention the certificates are in since I tend to be left out of the important emails. I just want my certificate already so I can finally be done with all this shit. All I got from them is a mug at graduation; that I am currently sipping on tea while writing this post. These were only a few things that I hated about the program. If this doesn't deter you enough from applying to the program, then I should also include that they charged my credit card for some reason AFTER I graduated from the program. It claims to be a "donation". Like why would I wanna donate to this shit fest? I should have seen all the signs indicating that this program was a fraud, but I ignored all of them because I was so desperate for experience. I was blind and I am paying for it (literally and figuratively). Don't make the same mistake I made and don't even bother with this program. Save your money for something better. read more

This program has a great opportunities. However, be mindful of racial remarks made by Program Managers. PMs will plot with student leadership in ways to set you up. Don't bother reporting anything because everyone is in on it. If you uphold a high standard of ethical behavior don't join leadership... get your clinical hours and move on with your life!! read more

The COPE Health Scholar (HS) program is AMAZING and it helped me decide my future career path in healthcare. I wholeheartedly disagree with the previous review about this program being a "hoax" and I felt compelled to respond. This program is unique in that no other student or volunteer program allows such hands-on patient care access and opportunity for learning within a hospital setting. In addition, after completing the program in good standing, one can receive a UCLA certificate in Patient Experience and Pre-Licensed Clinical Care. This program is excellent for those thinking of entering the healthcare field but are unsure of what path to pursue (RN, MD, RT, Administration, etc.), and it's for those who are unfamiliar with the hospital environment. The program can also help solidify a career choice you've already made and may help you realize that healthcare is not for you. Through this program you are provided opportunities to work elbow-to-elbow with all types of healthcare professionals while rotating throughout various hospital departments, including the ICU and ER, even the Administration Dept.. You get out of the program what you put in; it is not recommended for indolent or unmotivated individuals. If you are a proactive individual who wants to learn and work hard, you will reap amazing rewards. In terms of some staff not knowing the scope of practice of the HS, one need only remind them by saying, "Allow me to help you with that!" I was in the program for 4 years and loved every minute. I am very grateful for the HS program, as it helped lay the foundation of my healthcare career; the experiences I had there were priceless. When I finally did start professional schooling, I was a league ahead of my classmates in many ways and was already comfortable in the hospital setting -- familiar with codes, policies, procedures, and medical terminology. I encourage anyone considering being a COPE HS to speak to several graduates of the program about their experiences. I've only heard positive feedback from other graduates and from those in my cohort. The COPE HS program is excellent and I would highly recommend it to all motivated students who are considering a future career in healthcare. read more
