Great hidden gem in Coral Gables. I stumbled upon this place while walking off a huge meal from one of the nearby restaurants. I had no clue Coral Gables had so much character. I was able to catch part of the walking tour with the guide and she gave great background which helped fill in many gaps for me since I'm not from miami. The museum director John, also helped answer some questions for me. Great experience.

Its always nice to preserve a piece of history, and this Museum offers that, as well as the building being very pleasing to the eye. Did you know that originally the museum was the Fire and Police station? it is also known as the The City of Coral Gables Public Safety Building. It is now recognized as a historic site in Coral Gables, Florida. The building was completed in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project, and it was designed by Phineas Paist. In 2003, steps were taken to preserve the building and its legacy and by 2011, it was reopened to the public as the Coral Gables Museum. The museum is very informative. I have also been here for a food event once, which was situated outside in the front plaza, where they draped fairy lights, making it super pretty, especially at night time. The location is also great too, very near Miracle, Mile, Ponce De leon and the newly re designed car free street -the Giralda plaza. Definitely worthy of a look, especially if you are a history buff, and love and appreciate the old style architecture like I do. When you stand in front of the main building look up and notice the three faces, with what looks like fire men helmets... (see my pictures and you will see what I mean!)

Had no idea what a gem this museum is! My husband and I happened to have some time to kill before our dinner reservations in Coral Gables and we learned the first Friday was gallery night for local museums and that this one was a short walk from dinner. The museum had a live band and cocktails for the special event, along with free admission. We happened to walk in just as a tour was scheduled and our guide, Ian, told us all about not just the content in the museum but the history of the building itself. It was really cool to learn that the building was a fire station/police station and Ian even pointed out that the floors were the original and you could see where the fire truck tire tracks were and where the jail cells were segmented - so cool! Aside from the building being a work of art itself, inside there was an electric mix of art and history that had something for everyone. I had honestly assumed this was purely a history museum and might be a little dry in its exhibits but not the case at all. Although it's small, it's very cool how much diversity is on there exhibits. Coming for gallery night was also really nice because we got to enjoy some time after hours with live music and a drink on their beautiful courtyard. Definitely check out this museum!

We bought a Groupon for this museum for something like $7 for two people, but it turns out that we didn't need it because admission was free during our visit in July. The special exhibit was being changed, so there wasn't too much of the museum to see. Hubby and I enjoy the Coral Gables area, so it made for a nice day out to come here, see the umbrella exhibit a few streets over and have lunch. The museum itself is in a beautiful building, the architecture in this area is quite lovely. It was nice to learn more about this area and the first settlers in the first exhibit that we walked through. There is quite a bit of info on the Merrick family that helped establish this area. The museum itself is located in the old police and fire station, this building was constructed as part of FDR's the new deal. We wish we had been able to see a larger section of the museum, but we still enjoyed our trip here. I'd plan on spending 45-75 minutes here as it's not a huge spot.

A wonderful little museum, with the emphasis on little. It gives a glimpse of the background of the city but it leaves you wanting more

The Coral Gables Museum is housed in a historic 1939 Works Progress Administration building. Where you purchase your tickets was the police station and down the hall to the right was the courthouse. In 2003 the non-profit Coral Gables Museum Corp was formed for the purpose of creating the museum. In 2008 restoration began on the building and it's first full year of operation was in 2011. In 2013 the visitors center for Coral Gables was added. I decided to visit the museum after running into a group from the museum giving a tour of Pinewood Cemetery. After visiting the Merrick home I came over to see what else I could learn about Coral Gables. Regular admission is $10 but they had a special exhibit that you could tour for $5 more. It's called Sacred Ground, the Rise, Fall, & Revival of Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. When I inquired I was told it was in Brownsville and I thought they meant Texas. I had no idea there was a Brownsville Miami or that there was a cemetery there. I like visiting cemeteries for learning about history so I opted to add the exhibit. I started to look around but I didn't really understand what I was looking at. The exhibit is comprised of video, photos, documents, and items taken from the cemetery. Fortunately the director of the museum John Allen arrived to give a tour of the exhibit and explain the fascinating story. Lincoln Memorial was created by Dr. Kelsey Pharr who was trained as an embalmer in Boston. He started out burying lynching victims on ground owned by F.B. Miller who offered to sell the land to Pharr when he found out what was happening. With help in the form of a loan from the Burdines, Pharr finished paying off the land in 1937 and began burying members of the African American community. People buried here include Dana Albert Dorsey, Miami's first black millionaire, Gwen Sawyer Cherry first African-American woman in the legislature, Dr. William Sawyer, a protégé of W.E.B. Dubois, and H.E.S Reeves who founded the Miami Times, the city's first black newspaper. Also buried here are the people who physically built Coral Gables, war veterans, and 95 African Americans who were victims of a forced labor camp during the Jim Crow era. All of them are residing in cracked and decaying above ground stone coffins choked over with weeds. After the Pharr's passed away and they are buried here as well, the cemetery passed into the hands of a god daughter who has since died and left it to her niece Jessica Williams. In the 1990's the cemetery began to fall apart and there is no money to restore it. The museum has partnered with the owner for the exhibit and to help do clean ups. The only care taker is Arthur Kennedy and he is not paid. He appointed himself caretaker when he came to find the grave of his grandfather and he is still looking. The museum is trying to assist him with finding his grandfather and straightening out the burial records. I have been to the cemetery and words fail to adequately describe the scene. It has been vandalized and there are coffins next to the street. I saw rats and garbage. It is a shame to see that the most historically important African American cemetery has deteriorated into such disgraceful state. Families are not able to visit the graves of their loved ones. I applaud the museum for the work they are doing. The exhibit has some wonderful photographs by a Pulitzer prize winning photographer and I highly recommend a visit and a tour. The rest of the museum is dedicated to the history of George Merrick and Coral Gables. There is also a wing housing works of art. Since I had just come from the Merrick house I didn't linger here but if you don't know anything about the history of Coral Gables it is an informative exhibit. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the museum. The building itself and what it houses are important historical resources. The museum offers different tours in the city like the one I saw at Pinewood. When you finish your visit you can catch a bite to eat at the Books & Books cafe next door.

Really cool! Definitely going back to check it out again! I was able to go to the museum For Artopia, so it wasn't a "normal" museum visit (or maybe it was, but I don't think so). I walked the museum several times and really liked (what I called) the "Pink Floyd Pyramid" and the "old car". I am sure there are other awesome exhibits but I was completely distracted by the great food, music, entertainment and all the goings on of Artopia! Hialeah's Finest were hilarious! Artopia rocked and the museum is great! 4 stars is for the museum! Artopia would be 5! Will update after next visit

Artopia 2016 was a cool event with lots of food, rock music and art work that was open for us to see in the Coral Gables Museum. When you walk in they had lots of tents with different restaurants that were giving out their favorite dishes with many of them offering coupons and menus so you can go and check out their spot. My favorite was ceviche bar that I got to try their classic ceviche dish. Red Koi was also their and the chicken curry dish was also pretty yum. The alchol scene was Beck's and a russian vodka that was alright. The museum had a really cool show that had a women dancing with fluorescent paint all over her body and the back ground was a canvas that was also splattered with fluorescent paint everywhere (downloaded vid in my pics). Overall a really cool event hope they have another one next year.

One of the museum exhibits, about the development of the City of Coral Gables and the Merricks.

Although not as well-known as other museums like the Lowe Art Museum, the Perez Art Museum, or The Wolfsonian, the Coral Gables Museum is still worth visiting. The museum focuses mostly on local history, so if you're into history, then you will definitely like it. Everything here is historical -- including the building! Did you know that the building housing the museum is the former Coral Gables Police and Fire Station? You may be wondering why there are sculptures of firefighters on the building's facade, and this is why. This is a 1939 Mediterranean Revival building made of coral rock. Not only that, but since it was a police station, there was also a courthouse and jail cells in the building too. Makes you wonder if the place is haunted! My main reason in coming was that I was interested in the "Trailblazers: The Perilous Story of the Tamiami Trail" exhibit. I love The Everglades and wanted to read more about the history of building a trail through which vehicles could pass, and the impact it had and will continue having on The Everglades, especially now that they want to further expand the trail and damage the park by creating a biking trail named the River of Grass Greenway (see http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/environment/article17148134.html). This exhibit will be available through next year, if you're interested. Other exhibits were "Creating the Dream: George E. Merrick and his Vision for Coral Gables", which is an ongoing exhibit about the pioneer, the creation and development of the city, and included some interesting information, such as The Villages, something I knew nothing about before. There was also the "Ludlam Trail" exhibit which goes on until next year and shows the history of the site from pine rocklands to visions of what the trail could be, and "Anne Morgan's War", an exhibit about American volunteer women that rebuilt France during and after World War I -- it contained some pictures and interesting information to read, but will no longer be on display at this time (it was on exhibit only until the end of November). Apparently, they hold events such as music concerts, book signings by authors, activities for kids, and even nightly events like gallery night happy hours. I could not get their website to load however, so I cannot confirm all these events. Parking can be found in a nearby museum garage or on the street. At $7 for admission, it's not bad at all!

Park across the St for $1/hr. No museum parking lot.

Not a super exciting museum; spent about 40 minutes here. If you're into history, specifically about Coral Gables, then this may be more interesting for you. If I were visiting from out of town, this would NOT be a destination on my list. I got free passes to this museum, otherwise I would have been very disappointed paying the $7 admission to check out this 2 wing museum. My friend and I were the only people here on a Saturday. The hostess could have been a little more enthusiastic; would have been nice for her to greet us, or say anything for that matter. One wing had a photography exhibit with photos from the public. Some sort of photography contest going on. The middle of the museum displays the history of Coral Gables and the guy who designed it (George Merrick). The other wing had exhibits about the 4 National Parks in Florida. It was nice to read about the highlights of each park. Did you know the Everglades is the 3rd largest Park in the contiguous US? Come here and find out which are the largest 2, or just Google it. Parking: pay for street parking or park in the public garage across the street ($1/hr)

The Coral Gables Museum is a beautiful location to have an event. I just had my wedding on November 14 and everything was beyond superb. The venue offers many different areas to hold your event. I booked both the inside room and the entire outside area. We hosted our ceremony on the outside courtyard then guests were escorted to the rooftop for the cocktail hour. After the cocktail hour, guests were escorted to the inside room. The inside room is pretty simple and plain, which was great for us since we hate ballroom looking rooms. We had the freedom to decorate as we pleased without having those typical ugly curtains or chandeliers in our way. The inside room has windows with a view to Aragon Street. We just had our lighting tech install up lights which created a gorgeous ambiance. Christine Rupp was amazing. She is extremely nice and accommodating. We were able to do a contract and finalize all the details very quickly. The process is very simple and easy. We were able to do everything we wanted and more. We are both extremely happy we decided to host our wedding at the Coral Gables Museum!

I will say, the grounds are absolutely delightful, especially if you go in the Springtime as we did where flowers are all in full bloom, that alone is worth the ticket price. The architecture is exquisite! A feast for the eyes in so many ways. When we came to visit, they were doing renovations. You could see the water damage on the roof and walls, probably caused by one of the many Summer storms, because of that the tickets were at a discount that day but we were still able to appreciate the beauty of Viscaya. There are two cafe's. One in the garden of the main house, and another across the street where farm animals use to be kept. Surprisingly, the food and drinks are reasonably priced. The day we were there, a wedding was going to take place and there was a lot of commotion going on. Fancy tables being set up, fine china, crystal glasses, the whole works. We asked a security guard how much it costs to have a wedding reception there and he said: "Just to rent the space, no tables, no nothing, starting price is 100k". So if you have 100k lying around, and plan to get married soon, this could be an option for you. Jokes aside though; I'd definitely visit again.

The architectural details with concrete and MCM inspired wooden accents are just perfect. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful, and definitely added to our experience, and the gift shop is great. The restaurant is excellent and has a thoughtful menu, with several items that are inspired by pieces from the permanent collection. The sports art exhibit took much more space than I would have liked. There is a LOT of money in Miami, and I would have expected a permanent collection or even visiting exposition that would rival museums in New York, Philadelphia, or Washington, DC. - modern art, Impressionism, renaissance, or other fine art would be incredible. That being said, I will definitely return to enjoy the museum, and look forward to seeing where their artistic directors take things in years to come!

Decided to come here during the week to avoid a ton of little kids on the weekends or summer camp trips. Definitely NOT adult friendly entertainment. Took exactly one hour to experience all the room, so pricey for a short time. Maybe at a busier time it would be 1.5 hours but no way longer. Most of the exhibits were hands off and a few were interactive like the swings and ball room with music and cool light shows. It was something the wife wanted to see since it looked cool on Instagram, but not something I would ever do again.

I would say this is a museum for kids/families only…read more First off for parking, try to find parking on the streets nearby rather than in the lot as they charge $30 which is a rip off. As for the museum, it's inside a large warehouse. There's bathrooms in the beginning and in the end only, so make sure you go before you enter the museum. You are also not allowed to bring any outside food or drinks in but they don't check your strollers or bags for things. As for the exhibitions, some of them were better than others, but a lot seemed really tailored to kids. Some of the rooms were really boring with just balloon creatures standing there while others were more interactive. The place also was pretty toasty so dress on the cooler side. They have AC but it's summer in Miami so it gets hot inside despite that. It wasn't too crowded so you could still enjoy all the rooms without feeling overwhelmed. Would I recommend this to other people, probably not for the price point, but if you have kids and it's a rainy day it's a good activity to bring them to. It took us about 1.5 hours to slowly make our way through the whole thing.

The taxes and fees-added up to approx $10 more than the original price so $85 for two tickets. Google maps got us there and we eventually found the $15 self parking lot across the street. This was not well marked. Valet at the location was $20. We saw a little cafe area where they served some light food and drinks. Also a garden area out front with hammocks and chickens :-) The Ice Palace studio is on the outskirts of Wynwood, an artsy section of Miami with murals, graffiti, coffee shops, bars , cafes and boutiques. We were able to enter the exhibit earlier than our assigned time after a few photos at the selfie station. The entrance was dark and we walked into a maze like room with large written digital displays of Van Gogh's story, Vincent and his brother Theo. The main room was the actual digital display of his artwork in a 360 degrees art story played to music. It was very beautiful and filled the large room as we stood in the middle and took it all in. Some older than us has small fold up seats as younger sat on the floor. The room was not overcrowded mid week. There were two filled small benches but no other seating, my only complaint. I thought i saw ads showing spaced seating in the room, however i could be mistaken. It was not a long show and i believe you could stay and watch it again as it appeared to repeat itself. We stayed and watched the beginning over again. All in all we were there approx 2 hours. I'm happy i went and learned some history of this wonderful artist and the digital display was very beautiful. I think the Van Gogh's themselves would have been very impressed.

I visited Miami on a solo trip. The Little Havana Tour takes you through 9 stops in 2 hours which…read moreinclude authentic food and Cuban coffee, what a treat! It was a group of 10- 12 of us. Its all culturally narrated with stops that include cigar factory, Domino Park, Callejon Del Gallo, Ice Cream, Cuban Memorial, classic cars, and the theatre. NOTE: As self-professed coffee snob (Jamaican Blue Mountain, Kona Hawaiian, ect) this was added to my list! Less is best when it comes to Cuban coffee. Very rich and powerful little cup. The locals warned us to sip slow, woke me right up and offered good advice on adding sweetened condensed milk. Cost 5/5 $69.99 As a self-proclaimed high low girl, this tour was right up my alley. A good cultural tour which included food, drinks, historical facts, and opportunities to socialize. I also purchased food from the bakery, cigars, Cuban coffee, drinks, and souvenirs. I had plenty of leftovers and was full when it ended. This tour is included on the "Top 10 Food Tours in the U.S." for a reason, worth the cost. Location was central and rich with cultural from the elders in Domino Park playing dominions to the colorful roosters nearby. Great experience, I learned a lot. Apparently Gloria Estefan and her husband owns half the city, Love that for them.
