Look at public photographs of leadership. Then look at the public photographs of clients. I have come to realize that any place where such a striking imbalance exist is likely not only underperforming but perhaps even hurting people. I can say conclusively that has been the intention in at least one case with Cara. My interaction with this organization was short-lived and occurred across five interviews for a position that paid less than $50k. I was taken through a series of ridiculous tests for a management position that included 40 mins designing a power point presentation (I had been a senior manager in an organization with 1100+ positions reporting up, a consultant, a celebrated NFP program director and a university instructor so PP has been part of my tech portfolio for years before Cara was even on the radar). While the front-end staff was pretty nice, I was dumbstruck in one of my meetings when the human resources functionary told me she could not believe I had done everything on my resume. I responded why take my word; call the employers and references. That should've been enough for me to walk away at that point but because I had already met some clients and staff that I would've enjoyed working with, I accepted the next (third) opportunity to interview. It wasn't until the last meeting, in which I met the current CEO, that I determined Cara has a sinister orientation and have since referred potential clients and donors elsewhere. My last interview featured what I came to realize was a really mean-spirited act of entrapment. The Asian woman deliberately provoked me. Now here's the deal ... this was my fifth interview for a job that paid HALF of my last full-time salary and it was at the peak of the last recession during which I am spending very limited funds on gas and dry cleaning to respond at a moment's notice to their interview requests. Obviously, I needed the job and this woman seemed to personally enjoy the success of her provocation. But after sharing my experience with a number of other people like me, I realized this woman particularly and the Cara leadership by extension have a problem with people like me. And I see this reflected in some of the Yelp reviews and have been told by former clients and supporters of fundraising activities. Good mission. Unethical leadership. At best.
