Do yourself a favor and work with Jamie Gallagher. I just bought my first condo in the DMV (second overall), and coming in from outside the region, I had no idea what I was walking into. Jamie's deep knowledge of the market and genuine thoughtfulness about what I was actually looking for made all the difference-- and I'd say that whether you're a DMV newcomer like me or have lived here your whole life. Jamie has all the fundamentals locked down (great market knowledge, genuinely in your corner) but what set him apart was how much he actually listened. He took the time to understand not just what I wanted in a condo, but what mattered to me. There's a difference between an agent who helps you find A place and one who helps you find the right place for YOU, and Jamie is firmly the latter. Communication was seamless the entire time. I always knew where things stood and what was coming next. My closing ended up getting pushed back a couple days and Jamie wasn't able to be there, but he made sure his colleague Jillian had me covered. Shame on Corcoran McEnearney. Look elsewhere. The financial and physical toll my children are suffering due to this company's incompetence is mind boggling. Because they were serving overseas, they could not view the house in person and trusted the realtor to give them a realistic assessment of its condition. Their number one request was that there were no repairs needed. The house looked great in pictures, but after the sellers moved out, the nightmares were revealed. The advice to buy at the asking price and waive inspection is unforgivable. They are looking at tens of thousands of dollars in repair on a house that was priced at the top of their budget. She gave her suggestions about how to prioritize my wants. She was responsive and very knowledgeable. I found a lovely home in a highly sought-after community in Northern VA. Choosing Susan Taylor of McEnearney Associates as our listing agent for our Old Town Alexandria town house this spring 2019 was a nightmare. Our house sold quickly and above listing price. However, Ms. Taylor made the whole process both stressful and frustrating. For example, her lack of attention to detail resulted in listing our house with the wrong number of bathrooms. In her written and phone communication, she was brusque, bossy, and vaguely accusatory; she came across as rude. She did very little work on our behalf to negotiate a rent back or a later closing date, which left two weeks to address a number of requested repairs (based on the inspection). When asked, she failed to help us find licensed contractors to complete that work and actually recommended an unlicensed roofer (who required another, licensed roofer to review his work and complete additional repairs through the day before closing). These are just a few examples of the difficulties we encountered while working with Susan Taylor. Ms. Taylor could have eased the process for us; however, she seemed focused on easing it for herself. Working with her was a most unpleasant experience; by the end of the process, she treated us as a means to payday, rather than as her clients. I would strongly urge everyone against hiring Susan Taylor. read more

We had McEnearney Associates managing our rented house for over 2 years. Communicating was a challenge, slow, and rarely from someone we had dealt with before. Now that we are getting ready to move back into the house, their service is worse. They won't provide a damage report on the property but are randomly trying to get us to use their contractor to replace a damaged floor with unseen new tiles. This review is for Melissa Shelby. Melissa helped me sell my mother's home in Old Town Alexandria. Selling her house, had it's challenges as the house needed a lot of repairs on the inside. However, Melissa was very diligent in working with me on strategies that she thought were the best on selling the property. What I liked the most about working with Melissa was that she always told me her opinion but left me to make the ultimate decision. It should be noted that I live in Atlanta, GA and never met Melissa in person. All of our correspondence was by phone, text and email; which Melissa did a very good job on keeping me up to date with everything. Lived as a renter for several years, and now avoid looking at anything managed by them. It was not a good experience. They try to save money for the owners at all costs. I had a moldy wall which they refused to fix, or even pain saying "it's too big of an issue." Well then maybe no one should be living there... Also, the toilet from the apartment above me was leaking so long that eventually my bedroom ceiling fell in. Instead of cleaning it and fixing it, and ensuring there was no additional damage, the repairman patched a small area and left. There is no regard for the tenants by this company. When I moved out, the company took an additional month's rent out of my account "by accident." When I asked for a refund of the moneys that the bank charged me for bouncing a check (due to the fact that I had another rent check at the place I was living which should have been paid), they refused. I wouldn't use this company if my life depended on it. I'm in the market for a purchase, and I certainly won't be using them. Renters beware. It's not worth it. read more

Scummy, scammy, dishonest property managers. I lived in a small but nice townhouse in Alexandria for 18 months and there should have been a few red flags during our time there (taking forever to replace the electrical box on the dishwasher because they assumed it was broken due to a clog even though I explained that was not the problem; not telling me that they were removing a dead tree in the back yard - the tree definitely needed to go, but I shouldn't find this out by a call from the landscaper the evening before), but the move-out process with McEnearney was a nightmare. We scheduled our check-out with Cyndy Hooper for 9:30am, the earliest she allows. Their paperwork claims that if there are minor problems (e.g. just needs another wipe down), you can fix those at the check-out. My husband arrived at 9:00am only to find out that Cyndy has already completed the check-out. She orders him to sign her paperwork without allowing him to read it. He fortunately refuses, despite her insistence that "she is not a scammer" (why would someone think to say this if they are not scamming you?). My husband was not given the opportunity to fix small items at the check-out and instead we were sent a list of things to fix. This list included false problems, such as a "dirty" furnace filter that was changed days before the inspection (and we checked after Cyndy's claim - the filter was spotless, and we have photos to prove it). Clearly a very dishonest attempt to charge us for something they assumed we would not replace before check-out. Too bad they were wrong. The list also included a requirement to landscape the yard, and this is where things get very messy. We moved into the house in December, when most of the plants were dead. There were dormant vines, honeysuckle, and several woody weeds growing throughout the edges of the yard. I admit that we did not thoroughly list these on the walk-through sheet during move-in (and also because it was December, and the plants were in their winter state). The walk-through sheet listed that "vines should be cut back to the level of the fence" and McEnearney did not think we did a sufficient job of this prior to move-out. We weren't sure we'd have time to work on the yard after the first check-out, so we asked for a quote. They said we would be charged $950(!!!) for professional landscaping if we did not do work on the yard. OK, fine, we went back and spent hours working on that yard, cutting back years of vine growth from before our move-in. Neighbors on both sides of our house told us the yard was cleaner than it had been in years (and remember, we only lived there 18 months) and provided us with old photos of their yards where you could see the growth. At the second check-out, Cyndy Hooper said (and we recorded her, thanks one-party consent) that the yard looked "much better" and while she couldn't give final approval (what's the point of a check-out then?) she though things were very good and perhaps if they brought in a professional, they would split the charge with us. One month later, we get our deposit back, less $950 for a professional landscaper. We went back to the house to look at what they had done. The landscaper removed all vines from the fences, the whole honeysuckle bush, and an entire tree, and we were sent the bill. We acknowledge that surely $950 worth of work was done, but to foot tenants with a bill to remove a tree and years of growth?! We took photos of the one remaining tree which had remnants of the vines, again clearly years of growth, which we were charged for. Security deposits are for damage, not renovations. After threatening to sue them, they returned an additional portion of the deposit, enough that bringing them to court was no longer worth our time. However, the entire process showed us how dishonest and greedy McEnearney is. I would never recommend them as a property manager. read more

I would leave a rating to no stars but I don't think it's possible. BEWARE! Cindy Troupe with the Alexandria office manages the high-end townhome I rent an apartment in Old Town. To keep this as brief as possible, if you expect service, forget it! Despite the high rent we pay, a minimum of 10% is allocated for their services, if we need a repair we must ask them to "open a ticket" which is the end of their service. Tenants must manage their own repairs by making the appointments, being onsite to ensure that the service personnel are able to get in and are observed. McEnearney will give keys to the repair personnel but will not be present when they are on site so you must either take time off of work to do so or hope that the repair personnel are ok. Also, they recently said that all tenants must store their bikes in the basement or our apartments (despite their being a back patio out that is currently housing them adequately with no complaints from us). I requested a copy of my lease to find what appeared to be a new requirement. Cindy forwarded my lease with an added addendum I had never seen before slipped in as if it was included with the signed and executed contracts. This addendum said that bikes must be stored in the basement or apartments. When I pointed out this was not binding because it was not signed she admitted it and then referred to it as a "guideline" that must be followed (guidelines by definition are not required). The fact that she tried to pull one over on me but submitting this new and unsigned addendum as if it was a part of my contract is really suspect. I would be extremely careful before signing documents they sent to me but also what they send that I haven't even agreed to. When I indicated to her that this was shady and not ethical, she passed the buck to the owners saying she was sending it on their behalf (yet this unsigned "addendum" only came when I requested a copy of my lease from McEnearney) and dismissed my concerns by saying I was "overreacting" and "that this issue has been resolved." I pointed out that some of us may have issues due to small apartments and getting a bike in and out of the basement. I'll be storing my bike in my small apartment despite there being no legal requirement to do so but wanted to warn anyone thinking of doing business with this group to stay away! read more

We did everything to the letter and were mislead. We were made to believe we were the only applicants before a certain date and would be "processed" with priority over others. We had every reason to believe we'd get it after thoroughly discussing with agent. Then suddenly we are informed that they went with "another applicant", and they kept our money for our two application fees. Stay away from this terrible, unethical company. Jeff McGlothlin rented me an apartment with a sagging floor, mold in the ceiling and a hole in the deck. He said he would get these all fixed immediately. It took 6 months to fix the deck, a year to fix the bathroom! When I prepaid 6 months, I left after 4 and he kept one month because he said I didn't give him 30 days notice (I gave him 2 months notice) and kept another month because he got angry that I asked him for it. He is now threatening me we legal action if I go to small claims for it. Not a nice person, horrible landlord and you should be extremely cautious of his temper. read more

Beware. McEnearney property management is unethical and tries to bully renters. We had signed a lease renting a house from McEnearney property management. After living in the house for 18 months, we asked if we could leave early in order to purchase a house though McEnearney. In writing they agreed we could move out early if we agree to pay until a new renter moved in. We agreed and bought a new house though McEnearney. Aft er the house was purchased and they made their huge commissions, they inform us they "changed their minds" and they were putting the house up for sale instead of rent and we would owe for however long it took to sell the house. Then they spent over 3 months to even put the house on the market. This is totally unethical and illegal behavior. read more

I contacted this McEnearney's about looking into some properties in the Old Town Alexandria area. They responded to my email pretty quickly, but the agent they connected me with, Adam, was awful. Not only was his email riddled in typos (makes me feel real confident about working with them professionally, right?), but he asked for highly intrusive financial documentation over email without even offering to meet in-person first. V. sketchy.... When I told him that I didn't feel comfortable sending over that highly personal information via email, he just stopped responding completely. Realtors in this area are a dime a dozen. During the move out the realtor was working with the landlord to get the place back on the market. The realtor, without notifying us, provided our contact information to other realtors and entered our residence without notifying us. read more

We rented a car to go see an open house they were representing outside the city (they had posted the open house a few days earlier). We had tried to contact them two days early to see what their Covid protocols for the open house would be but never got a response. We get there early (since they moved the start time an hour later) and there is no one there and no signs on the property other than their real estate sign and number. We wait a little while and try to call the listed agent Katherine Hennigan and then call the main number. Neither answer. We wait a little bit longer and ring the Ring doorbell. The homeowner answers remotely and they are confused since they had entered into a contract...yet there were no updates about the open house or any signs on the property that indicated it was pending sale. The homeowner said they would contact the agent. Thanks for wasting our time and money getting out there. We can clearly see based on our experience and all the bad reviews that this is not a real estate agency anyone should work with if they don't even have the competency to cancel an open house or at the very list put up a sign that it was canceled read more

I have been in the military for 13 years and have moved six times. I have purchased three homes during this time and sold two. I also grew up as the son of parents who were both real estate brokers practicing in another state. I have never seen such disregard for quality and professionalism in a firm. Our experience was more about being treated as just another listing...another number...than as a valued client. If you're thinking of using them, try it first before signing a contract, and definitely stay away from Joel Miller. It looks as though the poor quality of service in their rental management endeavor is also present in the lack of professionalism in their real estate efforts. It's taken me far too long to give Harry Mahon the accolades he deserves for helping us find our rental property. I've previously found apartments on my own by visiting leasing offices or via internet listings; after working with Harry, I highly recommend using McEnearney if you're searching for a rental in the old town area. While selling homes (versus finding rentals) is surely more lucrative for any agent, Harry was extremely attentive to us and on several occasions, met us at a property on the weekend within an hour or so of us finding a listing. He was very laid back and didn't push anything on us. He had no problem showing us properties owned by other companies / landlords. We really wish we had found a McEnearney property that suited our needs at the time, because our only problem with the rental we found is the property management company that owns it. Harry kept in close contact with us for several months after we moved in, despite that he had no obligation to do so. I highly recommend working with Harry to find a place. read more

I would not rent from this company. We are current tenants at one of the Alexandria, VA properties. Our AC went out during the recent hot spell and we called to have it fixed. We mentioned multiple times our 19 month old and 2 month old were on the property. However, that wouldn't bother them to even put in the work order for another 36 hours. Our AC has still not been fixed, they claim the contractor will arrive tomorrow, over 72 hours from reported outage, with absolutely no remorse or sympathy the property they maintain is currently uninhabitable for minors. We'll continue talking into the fans and sounding like darth vader here, but i would find a company who prioritizes their clients issues and takes even minimal steps to assist until a permanent solution can be achieved, not perpetuating issues by holding off on executing vital work orders to a family with multiple infants. read more

I am only familiar with Mary Farrell at McEnearney Associates in Alexandria, VA. We recently moved from Boston, Ma and were currently renting in the Old Town area. We were looking to purchase a condo and she introduced us to different neighborhoods in Old town. We found a condo and it was through her efforts that in a short period of time that we made our purchase. She worked methodically, covering a number of details that out of state buyers needed to be aware of. She was also an effective advocate for the buyer making a number of calls to the realtor selling the property and other necessary people to ensure a seamless purchase. She provided contacts and set up all appointments for any workers that might be needed to do condo work projects that we wanted. Mrs Farrell did not rush the buyer into a hasty decision. She showed a true interest in what we were looking for which added a more human approach to her work. Overall, Mary Farrell is a very competent and would recommend her for selling and buying. Worst management company my husband and I have ever dealt with. The house we are renting has constantly had problems from the day we moved in; from a leaking roof, to rotten doors, to broken appliances, leaking windows, etc. They were not upfront and honest about the problems with the house and it's like pulling teeth to get anything fixed. They have even gone so far as to blame us for their lack of upkeep. Cindy Hooper, a maintenance manager for Alexandria and Arlington, is one of the most unprofessional people I have ever talked to. She outright insults you, is condescending, and hostile. Avoid this management company, they will treat you poorly and cause you much anxiety and stress! Which is ridiculous with the amount of rent that we pay! read more

I worked with Evelyn Austin, who only returned calls when convenient for her. We submitted our application over a week before anyone else and we negotiated mutually agreeable terms. McEnearney even took the liberty of contacting our employers, and our current landlord who we had not given notice to. We made a note of this on our application and didn't include a contact number for that reason. Nonetheless, McEnearney looked up our landlord's number, called them, and made it clear that we were going to be moving, which we were only partially considering. Even though all of the information on our application checked out (we have excellent credit, sufficient income, and great references), they ended up awarding the unit to another person who applied 8 days later. Long story short, we were forced to move because of the awkward situation McEnearney created with our landlord. That's not even the icing on the cake. Evelyn called me to see if she could destroy our application fee and first month rent checks and I consented. I found out a couple days ago that they cashed one of our checks after affirming that they would destroy them. Just horrible. Even if you find your dream rental, if its leased through McEnearney, its probably too good to be true. read more

Homeowners looking for property management - AND renters looking for housing BEWARE! This lazy, lying, dishonest and exploitive company will gouge you for all you got and have never seen before. Homeowners - they don't even show your rental property - they let other agents do it - and then you end up paying the commission TWICE. They send their contractors into your property to - supposedly - do work that doesn't need to be done and that you didn't ask for or authorize. Then they deduct the cost out of your monthly rental check. They make you pay additional for listing the property in the MLIS - even though it should be included when you hired them to advertise and manage your property anyway. And they're slow to respond when there is an emergency. (I didn't know anything about a plumbing problem for 2 weeks! - and only found out when I was contacted be a very frustrated tenant!) They were also extremely rude to me when I contacted them about that "episode". AND ALSO, they wanted to charge my tenant $500.00 for a credit check when he needed a roommate! C'mon! The average cost of that is $40.00. All in all, McEnearney did not take care of me or my tenant as I expected. Money wasted. Gouged and exploited for my naivety and the trust I put in them. I fired them as soon as my (horrific) contract was up. And believe it or not, they actually came back to me again the next year with their hand out wanting to start the process all over again. No thanks. Hey - unless you're a self-disrespecting zillionaire who doesn't give a hoot about your finances, property, or tenants, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

I don't recommend the agent, Robin, who listed my home, which finally sold after 100 days, from interest by another agent. Communication with her was difficult, she was very pushy, she made several snarky comments to me, and did things "her way". She didn't want to list my home with the description I wanted - over the listing period, she did not change the MLS listing to reflect my basement bedroom (even after both I and her boss proved that it could be listed that way). She seemed to be taking the buyers side towards the end of the listing period, and pushing me to "give them things" to close the transaction. We had different expectations - I expected her to sell my house (it was nearly a million dollar listing!!), and she expected me to be home on weekends to get it ready for potential buyers, as she was not available on personal activities, or out of town many weekends - the prime selling time. And she lived only 5 minutes away!! For a large part of the time, this was the only listing she had. I had to contact her boss several times during the listing to discuss my issues, and ask him to resolve the communication problems with her. I felt she could have been more helpful to help me sell, and not just wait out for the whopping commission. read more

I have used McEnearney to manage my rental property's for 8 years. They have been excellent managers, maintain my property well and have been more than fair with the renters. Their personal are caring and have done whatever is necessary to keep everything working smoothly. They have managed 4 property's for me and I have had no issues with any of the work they have done. They seem to have a great group of 'vendors' to help repair, and maintain the property's. Evelyn Mieszala has worked with me on any issues that have arisen. Yolanda Vasquez has been the renters contact person and I know of no issues. I personally have been quite pleased to work with their property management team. read more
