First time trying lagree, and I'm so glad I came here. I was sore for two days after! My instructor Ariel was really sweet and great at demoing moves as I was a beginner to anything lagree. Despite the megaformer being an intimidating machine, I felt welcomed and not overwhelmed. I've been going consistently to here and other locations for a few weeks now and am definitely feeling stronger! The space itself felt clean, albeit can get a little bit stuffy if you're coming in during mid day. Instructors will normally put on a fan. I'm hooked! Parking is decently easy to find. After living right next to the studio for the last couple years and having trouble finding the perfect gym/fitness studio for me, I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself to the unlimited first month of classes for $129--and I am HOOKED! As a morning person looking for early morning classes before work, I am pleased with the availability of the 6:00 & 6:50 AM classes every weekday. I try to go every morning and am also happy to have a different rotation of instructors every morning. I have historically done floor mat pilates but have never tried lagree and after a quick tour on my first class, it was pretty easy for me to pick up. I would say I was fully confident in knowing the names of all the moves after 3-5 classes. I would agree with other reviews that the classes can feel rushed and overwhelming if you've never done pilates or used the machine though. It's a very "learn-over-multiple-classes" type of workout method. It's a very controlled and meditative workout and the instructors are very mindful to include easier and harder variations and encourage you to push yourself. The studio is very peaceful with high ceilings, lots of fans, mirrors on 2 walls, with plants along another wall. The machines are wiped down after every class and some machines do have a couple minor cosmetics cracks or flaws but overall cause no problems. This studio does allow bare feet on the machines but they also sell their own branded grip socks and other merch in the lobby. There is a locker room, bathroom, and changing room attached to the lobby but the space is incredibly small so getting there early or lingering after clsss is not recommended. My only con is that the price of classes for around $30 each or the unlimited classes for +$200 a month can be a lot. The late cancellation fees of $15 and missed class fees of $20 are definitely a lot and really make me go to class in the morning. It was definitely way over my personal budget when I was originally looking for a fitness studio but I really do appreciate the convenience and what I get out of the classes. It's been the perfect class for me to roll out of bed, walk less than a minute to, get a GREAT & EFFECTIVE workout in JUST 40 minutes, and be ready for the rest of my day. I haven't gotten the chance to try out the other Core 40 studios, but I am incredibly happy with the studio in Lower Pac Heights! read more

This is the least body positive workout studio I've been to in SF. For context, I am a size 16. First time I was here the instructor heavily insinuated I was pregnant when she was polling the class for "modifications for expecting mothers." I thought this was maybe a misread on my part so I went back today; ended up crying on my whole walk home. The instructor queued zero modifications, I didn't fit inside the reformer's well for tricep dips, and she ignored when my hand was raised for people who had been to class less than 5x because "typically there's no newcomers at 6am." I am extremely disappointed with my experience here to say the least -- I love Pilates, but if you're built like me pick a different studio. read more

If I can wash down this burger with a gin martini right now, I would. But we're at work so ... Chewing thoughtfully on a medium well MMMeat patty, I ponder why I've become a fatty much more than usual. Job related stress? Hormones going wild? Anxiousness about riding damn Muni on game days? #commuteproblems A-ha! It could only be core40! This workout is powerful and it targets multiple muscle groups in a short amount of time. Of course, depending on the instructor and the style you prefer, it'll vary a bit. Whether you go with Jon (super nice but will push you with a smile), Janie (sweet and will kick your ass) or Madison (friendly and tough at the same time) you're guaranteed to sweat, grunt and tire out your core in an efficient manner. I still curse in my head when I do the plank, but I've improved over time. My favorite oblique exercise is the French Twist: arms on the handlebars to support your weight, then you place your foot in front of the other and drag the carriage towards you as you s-q-u-e-e-z-e your side. With the correct form, you'll definitely feel the burn. I will say that core40 is an expensive way to get in shape, considering it's only 40 minutes long, they don't have showers nor provide towels, but health is wealth no? On the way home, I stopped by the drugstore to buy a pregnancy test. Pee. Wait 3 minutes. "NOT PREGNANT" Keep calm and core40 on. read more

So I am a true native San Franciscan who believes that the City offers the best weather for working out outdoors and have never had a gym membership before. Running and using the DVDs from those new "less than one hour a day" workout programs is what I have be using. Recently I saw some MLB baseball players were using pilates machines and so when a few friends recommended Core 40 (okay they really twisted my arm), I was open to the idea. Mind you this is not your "Grandma's Pilates". As the name indicates, they work your whole body for FORTY minutes. I actually like the business model. So for people who don't have a lot of time and want a set schedule for how long they will work out, I highly recommend. I've done 90, 25, and 5 minute workouts, so maybe 40 is just the right amount. It was a bit intimidating at first. I highly recommend going with a buddy. When doing these kinds of programs you think that you are out of place because everyone knows the exercise and you are busy trying to figure out what the instructor is trying to get you to do. Additionally when you think of pilates, you think of yoga mats. Well at Core 40 they have these huge machines with adjustable weights for resistance, so if you are a guy, don't worry, there is a chance for you to do some heavy flexing. Now of course the thing you always think about in these classes is "the scene". The class usually has around 12 people at a time (reserve online, but they do have a waitlist) and I would say around 85% of the participants are female. I don't know about other locations but most of the people here are women aged 25-45 and most are in pretty good shape already. While I was waiting around one day I heard a couple of women from the nearby UCSF hospital saying "this location was really convenient for them and that Core 40 was more like an oasis from the hospital". So I really wouldn't call it an oasis. This workout will kick your butt and you are not just sitting around on mats. Think Robocop meets Yoga. Unlike my workouts on my DVDs, you can't pause the instructor. That said, my instructor, Charlene, had 3 qualities which made my first time a good one. She is high energy, motivational, and very patient (with uncoordinated newbies like me). In the 40 minute timeframe she packs in a routine that will leave gobs of sweat on the floor. Core 40 is not one of those "chi-chi" workout places. This is not the Marina Safeway, because people are darned serious about their workouts. So if you are someone like me who prefers to have solo workouts to not deal with others, this is a good alternative where you sign in, get on your machine and away you go. This location is clean and busy but there are other locations all over the City. In talking with my gal who has been doing this for months, she is always feeling the burn afterwards. That said, she is looking pretty good from all these workouts! For me. the way I look at it though, is this is good for maybe 2x a week and then you supplement with maybe some running or separate free weight training. PS - There is a room with Cycles in them and they do some kind of half pilates, half spin class as well. Oh, parking can be tough here too. read more

Pilates on speed really is the best way to describe this awesomely addicting workout. And all in just 40 minutes! Although I should be clear: this is NOT Pilates but rather the Lagree method (according to the instructors). But hey, tomato/tomatoe. I decided to check out this workout because 1.) I was desperately in search of a Pilates reformer workout that was as challenging as the one I left in DC, 2.) I kept hearing rave reviews about it, and 3.) an awesome and effective workout in 40 minutes seemed too good to be true! I like that the first class was $10, and the instructor was great at explaining things to me. Having taking reformer classes previously, I was not a stranger to the (mega) reformer (just a bit bigger than traditional reformer and with the pulleys in a different location), so the first class was easy to follow along with. But I could see how this could be confusing and a bit difficult to follow along if you are a stranger to this type of workout. I definitely found the workout to be challenging and worked up a nice little "glisten", so I was sold! This workout sounded like a great complement to other cardio workouts I do. Unfortunately, there are some downsides to this franchise, hence the 4 stars. For instance, you have to reserve classes in advance, which is fine, but if you have to cancel, you're supposed to do so 12 hours prior to the class. Imagine having to stay at work late one day and missing your class only to be charged $15-$20 for the "missed" class. While some of you techies out here may not have a problem with this, I found this policy to be a bit annoying. I understand that the instructors get paid for the students who register, but there's got to be a better system to avoid penalizing the customers for things against their will. I do want to mention that I cancelled a class prior to knowing this, then attempted to still show up for that class (because my conflict with the class time changed), and almost didn't get in (thankfully someone else ended up cancelling so I was able to make it, and the studio waived the cancellation fee...thanks Pac Heights!!) Also, is it me or are these classes a bit expensive?! While they do offer packages, one class for $35 is a tad much in my opinion. They offer 10-class rolling package as well, which could be used within a certain timeframe, but even that starts at $175. I'm definitely thankful they offer a military discount, but dang, who can afford these unlimited prices? So yes, I digress a bit, but forreal, who is able to pay these prices?? Overall, great to check out one-time, and if you're able to save your coins and get one of the packages, then go for it. Or you can sign up for the unlimited for a month and go everyday to justify the cost. Gotta love options!! My first core40 experience was quite disappointing. I arrived at the studio 15 minutes early and expected to receive some basic instructions. However, I didn't see anyone at the front desk until the last class ended. I went to find the instructor but didn't receive any guidance on the equipment or the grip sock. My spot was even given to a standby student at first even though I arrived very early. During the workout the trainer didn't give any personalized instructions either. I was using the equipment in a wrong way, but she didn't point it out when walking past me. Some other students behind me saw it and provided additional guidance. After taking a couple classes, I feel like it's time to put in my thoughts and opinions of my experience so far (hehe). I am SO glad I found this studio! I would only go on Sundays but have since branched out to other days of the week when I am available. I love how quick but challenging each class is. There is so much packed in just 40 minutes so it is a get in and get out. I leave each class very sore but feeling so much stronger than before I walked in. I'm also really pleased that this particular studio is down the street from my apartment - it's a nice walk down the street and I feel pretty safe. I also love that there is a Starbucks in close proximity to the studio so I can have my morning/afternoon coffee after class. Shout out to Chris! He was so helpful in introducing me to the machine, and he is great with helping out each student go to their fullest potential. I started out with only being able to hold a plank for only 30 seconds (lol) but now feel more confident in holding it for at least a minute to two. read more

I work out at a pilates studio in D.C. (District Pilates; #pilatesforthepeople) on a semi-regular basis but this was my first time on a "Superformer" machine. Loved the workout. Great mix of muscle lengthening and strengthening moves. Really worked all the small muscles in my lower body that are difficult to activate. My big buns were quaking by the end which never happens in a regular pilates class. Chris was a great instructor. Good instructional cadence. Perfect playlist for this type of workout. He told me I "killed it" which is ironic considering his workout killed me. I definitely recommend booking a class at Core40 if you're in the area. read more

I absolutely love Core 40 and this location in particular! I usually take either their weekday 6:20pm classes or their weekend morning classes and have only encountered one instructor that I did not prefer during those times in the last 8 months. The instructors are very attentive to form and will correct you or recommend removing a spring if they believe you will benefit from it. I only take their pilates reformer classes, which provides a full-body workout, but a majority of the focus is on the core and legs (glutes, quads). I believe they now offer limited spin classes as well; I attended a free trial of Core 40 Cycle at their Noe Valley-Mission location and really did not enjoy it -- it felt too spiritual/meditation-like and not motivationally heart-pumping. If you are a first-timer, you will find Core 40 pilates reformer classes to be super user-friendly because they actually put numbers on the mat and the instructors will call out which numbers your hands or feet should be placed. In terms of amenities, they have a wall of lockers, two changing rooms, a bathroom, and personal care products like spray deoderant, hand sanitizer, hair ties, dry shampoo, and bandages. No shower but I have found that I generally don't sweat in their Ramped classes unless it's over 75 outside and the fan inside isn't on. It's an easy location to commute to by public transportation (easily accessible via the 38, 38R, 1, 2, or 3) and it's also close to some hot spots like b.pattisserie, Japantown neighborhood, and NoPa neighborhood. read more

I tried out Core40 because my friend recommended it. I originally signed up via ClassPass, which was great to start off if you're still curious/wondering/want to give it a shot. Now, I can't believe I actually signed up and committed to this gym! It's expensive, but I believe that this is good money spent on being healthy. I love these Core40 workouts because: 1) They're very challenging - I'm usually stumbling home not because I'm drunk, but because they never skip a leg day. 2) The routines change everytime you go - thus you NEVER get bored! 3) The teachers are excellent. Some of my favorites are Michelle Woo, Ali Prince, and Celeste. Each teacher has their own personality, will push you to go your hardest, but they're also so encouraging 4) Short duration - literally just 40 minutes and you're out of there! It's easy to fit into anyone's schedule! 5) Music is awesome. I wish I could stream it somewhere on Spotify. To comment on someone else's post about it being too loud - I disagree. I can always hear the instructor, but the music is loud enough where it drowns out everything else, and thus you can really focus on your workout. 6) It's a great concept being in the presence of others, but you're there solely to workout on your own individual body. It's helpful sitting in the middle if you're new, so you can see what others' around you are doing. It's also helpful to see others around you push themselves - it motivates you to push yourself harder too. 7) Compared to other reformer pilates studios, they have the "ramped" portion, where they increase the angle of your reformer machine, thus getting a tougher workout! Also, it's super helpful that their reformer machines have numbers on them. The instructors will say "put your knee on number 6" and you have instant orientation to what to do next. I've only been to this studio since it's closest to where I live. I like the hardwood floors, the skylights, and the charm of this studio, which I think was previously a Victorian/Edwardian style home. Parking is pretty easy, as there's free 2-hour parking up and down Bush & Pine street. Also, you can go early in the morning, or after 6pm for free metered spots. I love Core40! read more

I signed up for this from class pass after taking bodyrok. I wanted to experience different classes before I committed to one that works for me. And I was also curious to see what the difference was between the two. I thought it was pretty cool that the platforms elevate (controlled by the instructor) to continuously challenge you. The concepts are very similar and the work out will test your balance! I love that they also had these balance poles/beams that you can utilize to assist you for the moves that are a bit more challenging. The class itself was pretty challenging but it seemed to focus more on the lower body. There were a few ab exercises as well, but only one or two arm movements. The instructor was very attentive and gave me a lot of guidance and attention on my first class- which I appreciated. In terms of the studio- there aren't any large signs, but it was rather easy to find. The studio is upstairs where there are vaulted ceilings, it is bright, many machines, they are staggered so some are further away from the mirror than others. I noticed they didn't have any towels though. Not a total deal breaker. read more

I know people who love Core 40 but go to other studios, so this review is going to be unique to this studio alone. Just had to walk out of a class about 10 minutes in because I realized how much I do not like this studio. Signed up for the new member unlimited month and couldn't get into it, then gave it one more try via ClassPass, so I've definitely given this place a concerted effort. I have been doing Pilates Reformer for five years and am always looking for ways to incorporate cardio into my routine, so wanted to love it, but I can't. Maybe I'm a exercise snob, but I want to feel like I am both getting a good workout in and learning a new technique or skill. I got 1 of 2 here (most of the time). First, the club music is way too loud so that you cannot hear the instructor. The instructors seem to be checked out most of the time and walk around without watching anyone's form or technique, which does not seem like a good idea given the high chance of hurting yourself on a reformer if you don't know what you're doing. The instructions are vague and they demo very little - look around the room next time you take a class and you'll see the deer in headlights look a lot whenever the instructor gives direction because no one knows what they're supposed to be doing. Everyone looks around to see what someone else is doing and it ends up being a class of 10 people all doing a different exercise at the same time - again no comment from the instructor. I'm all for fitting in a high intensity workout in 40 minutes, but not at the price of quality. This is neither Pilates nor bootcamp because there is neither precision nor strength training. Very curious what the process is to be certified as an instructor for Core 40 based on my experience. Two stars because it can be good for a sweat sometimes. read more

I've been here a few times with my ClassPass and do plan to return at least once a week. I usually come to the 5:30pm class on Thursdays where the class isn't full so there are more spots for last-minute decisions ;) The teachers have been really friendly and helpful, but have tough routines that have me sweating through the class. Music is good and upbeat, too. I enjoy taking the RAMPED courses because the reformers actually ramp upward so there's more weight to challenge you on your exercises - but if you want them off, let them know. They have lockers and changing rooms if needed. They also teach a cycling class here, but I haven't tried it to review on it. Pro tip: take one of the reformers in the midlde of the class ;) the fan is right above to help cool you down through the session. read more

This is the First time I try megaformer am about to finish my 10 class package and it will roll into a new one. I m a classic gym goer, I like to run, lift weight and do my own stuff , also do yoga on my own usually don't like classes if any kind but I really enjoy core40 and especially michelle woo. I was so fortunate to have her as the instructor when I went for my trial class. I really enjoy her classes. No pain, no gain! This pretty much sums up the core40 work out. Interesting concept: focus on the core for 40 minutes using multi-functional machines and practice movements that last for around a minute. Although it sounds like high intensity it's actually the other way around - they want you to focus on slow execution but steady movement. Being a regular boot camp class attender myself I thought I'm somewhat prepared for these hellish 40 minutes but I was in the wrong. You'll hardly be able to walk after you're done here! While the concept is interesting enough to try it out, the classes are pretty expensive ($13 on average). It'd be great if they'd offer more promotions. Also, water is available but no cups (?!). Ventilation is not great (call it Bikrim40!) and it will get hot and steamy in there. Changing rooms and lockers yes, but no showers. read more

This is one of the best workouts SF has to offer. My favorite is the combo class (25 minutes of spin and 25 minutes on the reformer). It really kicks your ass - heart rate is pumping the entire 50 minutes. I never thought 25 minutes of spin could be so difficult and I'm literally counting down the seconds on all the ab moves on the reformer. Tara and Janie both rock! Sweat factor for the combo class is 7 out of 10. read more

This studio is very convenient for me, but allow extra time if you are driving here. I will give it 5 stars for Christian Chapman, Marisa Tania and Leigh Barnes. They all are great, teach in a way that makes everyone feel included and safe and will correct your pose if needed. I appreciate this a lot, since the exercise sessions are just a few seconds and you can put too much pressure on joints if you're not in the correct position/alignment. Now these ladies have been awesome and I try to book classes only with them! There have been other instructors who just don't care much and will not give you any instructions, act super arrogant etc so that can get disappointing and frustrating especially given the price of these classes. I am recommending these exercises for a full core workout, very efficient and always challenging! The slower you go, the bigger the impact. Also, you can do these at your own pace. If you want to squeeze in 3+ sessions a week, I suggest taking it easy - pushing it to 100% will leave you in pain the next day(s) HA! I appreciate the motivational weekly emails, keep me booking some more and encourage me to push harder. BEGINNERS: you should definitely try the Foundation classes, as the regular classes get pretty intense. Make sure you let the instructors know and ask for no Ramp if it gets too tricky. read more

I'm into month three and am still feeling the burn! The studio is clean, close to my house, and I LOVE the 6AM class time. Nothing in my neighborhood offers an early class that is effective and still gets me to work on time. Minus one star for the instructors being hit or miss - most are great, and Janie is by far the HARDEST and most motivating and informative, her classes are my favorite and I wish she taught every day of the week! Jon and Tara are also fun and challenging. Minus one stare because some of the other instructors/subs are really lacking in energy and don't focus enough on the students. For example, I had one sub who was so concerned about her mic batteries dying that she neglected to ever correct the student next to me who was doing the exercise so incorrectly it was hardly even in the same family. Why not turn down the incredibly loud music and speak loud and clear? Nope, battery obsession continued and the class suffered. If it had been my first time, I would never have come back. Force more accountability with your instructors and ensure all of them are up to par and are not just spouting off fluff and repeating phrases they memorized. This class is a whole body burn!! Talk about full body shaking and next level challenge. I used to attend a similar class when I lived in LA called MDR 2.0 on a mega reformer using the Langree method. If you're looking for full body toning this is the class for you! I love that it's 40 minutes rather than a full hour so no excuses!!! Lucky for me it's right around the corner from my new flat. I've been to Core40 a handful of times thus far, and have to say that I'm 100% bought in on the workout and method. It's super challenging, there are little to no rests, and when they say FULL BODY, they mean it. That said, one thing that keeps me from giving that fifth star (and I almost feel awful doing this) is that some of the exercises are VERY challenging. I try to vary my workouts, between spin, yoga, and occasional pilates, but I think that the Core40 method definitely lends itself to people that return time and time again. I find myself sometimes wishing that the instructor would give more modification prompts (ie. is it ok to drop to knees, or remove 1 spring to help with form), so I'm not feeling lost or defeated when I can't hold a pose or move my body in a certain way. I'll definitely be back - they occasionally have great specials on 10-class packs, and hope to get stronger in the process! read more

I found Core40 through ClassPass and I have to say that it's the best studio that I've tried so far. The teachers are motivating and educated in their field, and it's refreshing to attend a class where the instructors actually show you the correct form. I work out 4 - 5x a week, and each time I leave the class sore. I've taken both the full body Pilates class and the cycle class and couldn't recommend each one enough. read more

I tried my first class here last week and loved it. The instructor, Ashley H was such a sweetheart. Normally if there are reformers in the studio the instructors take themselves a little too seriously. Ashley teaches like she enjoys her job. She was patient and helpful when I needed assistance with some of the moves. At first I was worried the workout wouldn't be sufficient in only 40 minutes. Totally wrong. I got sweaty and felt stronger leaving the studio! They do not sell water so be sure to bring your own bottle. I didn't happen to see the changing rooms but they have easy to use lockers at the front. Overall I was into this studio's vibe and would love to come back. read more

The classes are the exact same as the Core40 in Lower Pac Heights, instructors teach at both. The studio itself is good, it's pretty big with a lot of reformer machines, there are a few things they're still getting together but they just opened so it's more than understandable. Heads up: same as the pac heights studio you need to bring your own towel and water bottle but they do have a water filter to fill your bottle up. You'll leave with shaky legs and soar arms as well :) read more

I've had possibly the worst customer experience with Core40. They put in odd loopholes when customers try and cancel their memberships, making them look desperate for money. The point of contact their ("Client Happiness Manager") is also quite abrasive in conversations and doesn't seem to be much help. I originally enjoyed Core40 classes when I first attended, however, the classes become very repetitive and the class experience is all over the place as teachers drastically range in styles and experience, hence why the attempts in cancelation in membership. read more

I love the workout here and will certainly keep coming because of it. It's quick but difficult and it gets results. It would be great to have more of a community atmosphere at the studios, one where instructors and people working the desk work to build rapport with clients. read more

4.5 stars Finally, an instructor who knows she is there to teach. Krista's class today was a step above the rest. She had clearly thought through how to sequence the class to make it challenging, while simultaneously giving modifications and advancements for every move. She is the only instructor at Core40 who I've seen and heard address and correct dangerously incorrect form. Classes are far too expensive to attend and be coddled or told you are doing "awesome" when you aren't actually engaging in the move. I would only take off half a star because I would really love for Core40 in general (not just this studio) to offer a variety of classes by creating an advanced 60 minute class. read more
