Ali's small group class was just what I needed to get back into working out now that things have started opening back up. She led us through a mix of strength and cardio intervals, offering modifications and cues calling attention to form and alignment reminders (I definitely needed these!). I felt comfortable easing back into things while still being pushed beyond what I've been doing on my own over the past year. It was really nice to be back in a gym setting and use equipment not as common to the basic home gym setup many of us have acquired during the pandemic (yoga mat, dumbbells, bands...). Checking the schedule and signing up online via their website was easy. Once I arrived, I was welcomed and shown around, and I observed the current Covid protocols of mask wearing were being followed. I've copied and pasted it for reference below, but considering the "new normal" with shelter in place and social distancing, I wanted to re-post and reiterate how amazing TCS and Liz is. She managed to pivot to online FB live workouts daily and between her and the other TCS teachers, I'm able to actually get more workouts in from home than I could when I was physically going in. It's also so nice to see her face and the rest of our TCS crew pop up in the comments, it truly still feels like we are working out together. Folks, this is what a community is. Hopefully I'll "see" you there :) ******************************************** I am not a gym person. I've tried, and failed, to go to a traditional gym many times. Before kids, my physical activity was day-long hikes and climbing at the rock gym all afternoon. Around the time my first kid turned one, I realized that my mental and physical health were lacking and I needed structure if getting back to working out was going to stick. I signed up for ClassPass, and TCS's GIT FIT class was my first foray back into physical activity after pregnancy and early motherhood. Though I tried a few more places to tell myself I put in the effort, I knew I found *my* place here. I quit Class Pass and I just recently celebrated my 5 year anniversary at TCS. What do I keep coming back? The community. Nobody here postures or cares what they look like. They're not here to get dressed up or be seen, they're here to get strong and have fun. There is a core group of regulars, but come enough and you will be one of them, there are no "cool kids." GIT FIT is a different class every time, but expect to warm up, do a circuit of cardio (together or in stations) and then transition to strength training (again, usually rotating through stations, so it keeps things interesting and you're constantly moving.) Sometimes, there will be relays. Sometimes, there will be teams. Sometimes, you'll work with a partner. Every time, you will have a good time. I've been around to take classes from some excellent teachers, some of which are no longer in SF, but even they come through to visit and take class when they are in town. Liz, the owner, has the gift of being able to describe to you not only how the moves should feel to you but give such great insight and correction that will make you *understand* how to target the muscles you need to for the proper form. Her classes are dynamic in movement and will work your whole body in ways you may not always expect. Jason's classes skew more towards traditional HIIT or bootcamp-y but you'll get just as great a workout in a different approach. He also has a background in stand up comedy which will not be at all surprising. I haven't had the pleasure of taking a class from Felicia yet but I've heard good things. If you need structure and consistency to get yourself in shape and have found a gym just doesn't get it done for you, this is your place. If you dislike the aggro bootcamps and ear-shredding spin classes, this is your place. If you just want to come and get healthy and strong in a supportive environment with folks that will welcome you because you want to be here, this is definitely your place. Liz, the founder, is amazing! I first booked my weekly Gyrotonic 1:1 for an injury with my hamstring. I have maintained this weekly cadence for over a year now, and I can't recommend it enough! Each meeting we do a body check-in and I make any requests for areas that are hurting or bothering me. We do a combination of stretching & strengthening. We end each meeting with a cool down and I always feel at peace at that moment. So collected and calm. The Corner Studio is very convenient and the workout is so much fun. I like the noon classes (before I eat). I really like the TRX and Pilates Mat classes and the Git Fit classes are a REAL cardio workout! I am fortunate to also get private training sessions with the owner, Liz. She not only is an excellent Pilates instructor but also has a lot of new Gyrotonic equipment and a lot of experience teaching Gyrotonics. (I have had other instructors at other studios but she really is the BEST!) I first started going to The Corner Studio when it was located in a smaller space. They moved to a different location, but it was still nearby. I had stopped going but started up again. The new studio was nice and had lots of great equipment. I really liked the Pilates reformer! Everyone there was helpful and really made sure you were doing the exercises properly. Then we had to shelter in place. Liz, the owner, had workouts via zoom. While you miss out on being with others in the studio, it has been so good for me and my schedule! You can sign up to get recordings of the workouts in case you can't make it at the scheduled time. Liz is very creative in terms of giving you ideas of what to use in case you don't have specific equipment at home. I definitely feel stronger, thanks to the classes and having personalized sessions with a trainer I met at TCS. Liz is also super motivating! read more

The G.I.T Fit classes are amazing! Classes are limited in size which allows the trainers to a) call you by your name which is always nice, b) focus on everyone, give positive feedback or correct postures when needed. All teachers I've tried so far are great and very dedicated to reinvent the class each time by incorporating new props or different exercices. Expect a lot of sweat from this class but also a lot of fun. read more

Through the years I have sweated through high intensity GitFit classes, core classes in Pilates, and strengthening TRX classes. I am strong as hell because of Liz and other exemplary teachers. I've been taking private lessons in Gyrotonic with expert trainer Liz for 6 weeks. My reason for coming to The Corner Studio SF is to get Beach Body Ready for summer. I'm older now and run a bigger risk of injuring myself if I workout on my own. With Liz's expert help we are more than preventing injury, we are toning the crap out of my melted, flabby, short, Barbie body. I'm well on my way to the perfect bikini body! What I love the most about "Lady Liz" (that's what I call her) is her style of training. What ever muscle that we are working on, Lady Liz helps to train my brain with an isolated movement of that muscle first. After I have it down and I'm firing the correct muscle, that's when the real work begins. This approach is GENIUS for someone like me who's body wants to cheat. HAHA jokes on me because Lady Liz is right there to make sure I that don't cheat myself out of a great workout. Something that I was not expecting is her true knowledge of every single muscle, tendon and bone. Today I had some pain in my little muscle on the right butt cheek/hip (excuse my lack of knowing the name.) I let Lady Liz know before we got started and she found that bugger, helped stretch it out and got me out of an uncomfortable pain so my workout would be more productive. It was like major comprehensive physical therapy that didn't feel like work. This is truly the best. Who knew that when you actually exercise properly, you don't have to do as many reps. There is a friendly, fun, and supportive community here. After sweating and going through (sometimes) a lot of pain together, you can't help but feel closer to your fellow GIT FITers. Working out is made enjoyable and the hour just flies by. LIZ is really sweet. She is extremely supportive & remembers names. She comes around to correct form as necessary, which I def. appreciate. ALLISON is pretty awesome too. She's super friendly and easy to talk to, and she pushes people to their limits. They're both REALLY great! Liz's Saturday morning class had only 6 people so we were able to use the TRX (which totally left me in pain the next day) and a lot more equipment. Her cardio circuit was fun too. Alli's weekday 7pm class was cool because we did HIIT on the hills outside (I love being outdoors so brownie points!). However, I didn't feel as challenged by the strength training exercises. The only area that I'd recommend improvement on is scheduling. They have one GIT FIT class at 7pm and for someone who gets off at 6pm or and sometimes later, that is not possible [add an early morning class or a later class please!!]. Also, I think it would be extremely beneficial if the class was extended to 1.5 hours. For $18/class (I think), it doesn't seem worth it to spend 50 minutes or less doing actual cardio and strength training. Especially since I felt that too much time was wasted moving outdoors and/or setting up equipment. read more

The Corner Studio is a place for people who are serious about taking care of themselves and about reaching a deeper level of fit. By this I mean, everyone I have met here is interested in building a practice of lifelong fitness, not just a quick-fix slim down or building muscle. I have been doing private training with Nicole for about a year and I love it. It is almost unbelievable how much Nicole is committed to her clients and their well-being. She spends a great deal of her time outside our sessions thinking about exercises that will help me be my best, strongest, safest self. I started seeing Nicole because I wanted to be more fit, but I also know many people who started seeing her after a serious injury, all of whom have long since moved past the pain and into strength. I've also taken Pilates with Liz, TRX with Sophia, and GIT Fit with both Liz and Nicole. They are all amazing. The trainers at TCS are all about safe and effective workouts. You won't do a million reps of something, you'll do 10 perfect reps in a slow and controlled way, and feel a much deeper burn. My favorite thing about TCS is the community- I feel surrounded by people who support and care for each other. After class, I frequently find myself talking to people I've only just met about anything and everything- there is a shared feeling of interest, respect, and intention among the individuals at TCS and it's fundamental to everything about the studio. Since I started going to The Corner Studio, I've become stronger, developed confidence in my body and its ability, and made some really wonderful friends. I have this weird guilt thing where if I write a really bad review for a place, I need to follow it up with a really good review for a different place. I just finished skewering Cafe Sophie, so I immediately felt the need to write something glowing, and my first thought was The Corner Studio. I started going to TCS a few months ago, after I "graduated" from physical therapy, and my PT recommended pilates to maintain my lower back health. I stumbled upon TCS while visiting the Starbucks adjacent to it, saw that they offered pilates mat at a convenient time, and decided to check it out. I was instantly hooked. My pilates teacher, Jodie, is insane. I mean that in the best possible way. I could barely move my arms after my first class with her, but I haven't stopped going -- probably because 1) I am a masochist, and 2) it works -- my arms are noticeably more toned, and I feel stronger and more flexible. The other pilates instructors I've had there, Nicole and Sophia, have also been excellent. I still love going to Jodie's class though because she definitely makes me work the hardest, and she plays great music. After a few weeks of pilates, I started to get curious about another class they offer called GIT FIT -- one of those classes was right after my pilates class, and after sneaking a peek on a few occasions, decided it looked simultaneously torturous and awesome, kind of like gym class on crack mixed with military boot camp. My inner masochist needed to try it ASAP. I've been going to GIT FIT now twice a week for the past month or two. I've only had class with Liz and Ali, and they are both awesome beyonds words -- the class is capped, so there is a ton of individualized attention, and for all the times I hate life while killing my abs in plank or "taking a break" by running around the block, I have to say, I never feel better than after one of those classes. In sum, all of the instructors are awesome, the space is the perfect size and really clean, they have a lot of great equipment and classes, and everyone is very supportive of one another. I'm no Adonis. I don't work out for fun. I've never had a "runner's high." Yet I've been going to the Git Fit classes here every week or two for two years now. There aren't many businesses that engender that kind of loyalty in me, but The Corner Studio has somehow become one of them. I started classes in the wake of months of physical therapy following a bike accident and broken clavicle. Youth and a quick bike ride to work were no longer holding my body together: I was hurting. But in three or four months of regular classes I had a brand new body. Or at least it felt that way: I felt better, I looked better...and I had to move up a suit size to accomodate my new muscles. The Corner Studio is also a community: compared to the tiny, cramped, Burn on on Valencia, here you have room to spread out and few enough faces you'll quickly remember them. I may never be a fitness enthusiast, but I'm glad to have workout buddies who provide the enthusiasm I lack. The small classes mean the instructors can and do provide individual attention to make sure your form is always improving. Like with any business, there are caveats. They don't have many classes, so you have to plan around their schedule. While my body does feel much better than when I arrived, I never lost any weight there. And each instructor has a different style, so you'll have to try a few classes to find your favorites. But over all, The Corner Studio has done the impossible: given me a regular workout plan I can stick to. And one pleasant enough I hope to be attending for years to come. read more

The staff at the Corner studio are wonderfully encouraging and inspiring! I took my first ten sessions of Pilates with Liz Donahue, an accomplished teacher and fabulous instructor. She gave me sooo many helpful hints to make the technique make sense... when first starting pilates, it can be challenging to understand what is going on ...especially when you are convinced that you don't have core muscles, like i was! AFter ten sessions, I was MUCH stronger, and I could feel muscles that I hadn't before... I recommend Liz and the Corner studio whole heartedly! read more

I have really loved fitness classes at Corner studio - challenging, varied, long warm-up and both strength and cardio, which is hard to find in a small class format. Nice atmosphere that's casual and friendly. I take Jason's morning classes but have also enjoyed Liz's noon class occasionally. I also take pilates with Jessica, who helped me heal from serious shoulder problems. She is as knowledgeable as any PT I've ever been to, and I'm convinced our continued work has kept the shoulder issues from recurring. read more

The best thing first: *every* time I leave the Corner Studio, I notice myself walking taller and more effortlessly on my way home, feeling my new muscles in action. The work stays with you in the rest of your life and you feel yourself moving differently, supporting yourself better. And that spills over into the way you feel about yourself in the world in the best way! It's rare that boys lead me to such things, but in this case... First a friend had a miraculous healing of back pain that enabled him to get off of the hideous couch he'd been bound to sleep on for years (the ONLY place that didn't hurt his back). That was good for the marriage! Then my own s.o. stopped complaining about his back and started skiing again. (Props to Liz and Francis.) And now I am ever grateful to Liz and Abby for teaching me how to stand tall and use muscles I never knew I had! I've had a bit of a sway back all my life and now I know what it feels like to stand tall! I'm really "in my body" in a whole new way, in less pain and more grounded. All of the instructors I've encountered are awesome and work with you on such an individual level - even helping me to look at how I hold my body when I work to avoid neck and low back stresses that I've had for years. I love the private instruction for the deep understanding I gain about my own body each time I go. And I love the gyrotonic work for the flow and grace it develops. No horrible complaints about the place. It's cute, it's cozy, and the instructors are good. I went a few times for the mat classes. It was hard to go back though as they don't offer many offerings of the mat classes, so the only class they really had was Monday nights and sometimes Mondays are just too hectic for me to make it in time for mat class. Also on the semi-privates, I inquired about them 3 times, and each time they said they would try to find a partner on the same level as me ( 5 years of pilates) and then call me back to see if we can set up some mutual times to do semi-privates. That confused me as my old studio, just signed me up for a time, made sure that there were no more than 2 of us to an instructor and I would go and work out. It didn't matter if the other student was at the same level we would just do different things. Either way, they never got back to me about it, any of the 3 times I asked. The mat classes were really good, the teachers worked you and I felt like I got a good experience. Also they were small and intimate unlike mat classes at huge gyms like 24 Hour Fitness, which I like. I just wish they offered more times, and were able to get back to me about the semi-privates. I think that overall this is a great tiny studio, but if you need more flexibility and class offerings it may not work for you. It didn't for me, as much as I wanted it to. read more

I've seen this place for a few years now and have always thought about trying it out. So - I signed up online recently and checked out their pilates class. And...boy did i get a work out! The instructor- Jodie was great and the other members were all so polite and helpful. I worked out muscles that I didn't even know existed! Love this place! I've been working out here for years and years and wanted to update my review based on the Git Fit classes. Git Fit RULES! No matter where you're at as far as fitness, Git Fit can work for you. The classes can be super hard for someone in great shape or you can dial it back what you're doing if you aren't there yet. The best part is that the gals that run the classes are also all Pilates and Gyro instructors. They focus on form and technique way more than in a Cross Fit gym (not knocking Cross Fit). I've done Git Fit for YEARS and I've never been hurt which is amazing because I'm getting old and push myself. The emphasis on good form is what separate the class from anything else I've done. Great group fitness class here called GITFIT. There were only 6 people in the class so we got a lot of individual attention and encouragement. The space is small but mighty and contributes to the positive energy. The workout started with a warm up. We then did some plyometrics across the floor and finished with two sets of circuits. The movements were really innovative and I know I'll be sore tomorrow (in a good way). I also think I'll be able to do some of these moves on my own. The instructor (Jason) was awesome-- very friendly and encouraging without being pushy. The studio space for the class isn't huge but since classes are kept small, it's perfectly adequate for what we did. There is a water dispenser and cubbies for belongings. I saw that they also have Pilates reformers. I would say the workout was a 7/10 in terms of effort. I was sweating but there were breaks and the intensity varied throughout the hour. read more

This is a great little neighborhood place. When I lived in this neighborhood it was great to be able to go first thing in the morning. There are lots of windows and sunshine, and it just has a warm friendly vibe. I never took classes, cos they don't offer very many, and none at times convenient for me. I only took privates with Nicole. She is incredibly knowledgeable, and really interested in teaching the proper mechanics of pilates breathing, core work and alignment. This is not a cardio workout. This is pilates. Nicole is friendly, has a great personality and a very hands on approach (which I always appreciate). She is gentle and sweet, and my hunch is this would be a great place to go if you were recovering from an injury. I appreciated getting the fundamentals correct, but I wish there had been a little more energy in the studio, and a little more vigorous workout. I've been taking private and semi-private pilates at the Corner Studio since they opened. The trainers are excellent and know their stuff. Recently the Corner Studio began to offer a group exercise class called GIT Fit. The class is an hour long with a maximum of 8 students. You work on cardio, weight training, balance, coordination and endurance. This class has made a major difference in my strength and health. Plus, I've lost a few pounds! I dropped my gym membership and put that money towards this class. Well worth it. read more

This is an awesome gym! I've only attended a few classes so far, but I am already hooked. I highly recommend the morning AM Fit class with Jason! It's got all the high intensity cardio and strength training as something like Crossfit but without the competitive, push-till-you-drop atmosphere. The classes are capped at 13 people, and there's plenty of equipment to go around. The room does get warm, though, wish the A/C was a little stronger! They've got balls, resistance bands, balancing tools, weights, kettlebells, mats, and more! I've had so much fun in the classes I've tried, everyone seems nice, good gender balance, and the instructor Jason is kind and encouraging. I can't wait to keep coming back here! read more

Wish I could give them six stars. I read all the Yelp reviews before I first went to The Corner Studio, so I knew the pilates classes kicked a**. But nothing really prepared me for how supremely awesome Liz's Saturday morning mat class it. It's disgustingly, awesomely hard. Trust me, I've slutted out to every pilates studio in town and none have ruined me quite like Liz, I love it. Normally after a pilates mat class I'm wondering where else in my day I might be able to fit in a run, but after Liz's class I'm completely spent for the day. Even when the class is packed she makes sure to give everyone personal attention and manages to hone in on your most difficult move and make you do more! Not to be out done, the All Levels Mat classes are equally challenging yet let you work a little more at your own pace. But what I really want to rave about is the new Git Fit classes offered at The Corner Studio. Git Fit is basically Cross Fit, equally as challenging, but a lot more user friendly. I had been running around Dolores Park in bootcamps for months without seeing any change in my body. With Git Fit there was a noticeable change in my strength and my body's look and feel within weeks. The great thing about Git Fit is it is what you make it. You can sweat it out and try to keep up with the studs in the front row, or you can go at your own pace, still get a great work out, and everyone in the room will still clap for you when you are done. And yes, by "studs" I do mean guys and gals. Yes, even though Git Fit is offered in a pilates studio there are a lot of dudes that go there, studly dude (you know I'm talkin' 'bout you Tony!). I suffered from chronic back pain for 8 years. I tried everything - chiropractors, yoga, doctors, physical therapy, and surgery. Always short term relief, but nothing lasted. The only thing that has worked is the combination of pilates & gyrotonic training at the Corner Studio. Tried out the GIT FIT classes through fitmob promotional offer. Most engaging classes that really work out my core and other parts. The instructors - Liz and Jason have been very imaginative and thoughtful in designing the workouts. They really know what they are doing - how they are pushing the body and how they are balancing the exercises, working out one part while another rests. As we do exercises, switch, shift from one group and equipment to another one is always in the mode- C'mon 10 seconds more and done! Before you know it the class is done and you have accomplished a lot. I have always greatly enjoyed the crowd as well. As you pass the ball, or do burpees while the other skips there is a sense of being in it together. I like the wooden, glossy gym machines that I can see when I go into the group class studio and it makes me feel like an old school boxer or something. In the group class as we pant, jump, bend, squat I also get the feeling of being in a vintage fitness setup. There is a Starbucks next to the Corner Studio, and when I leave the GIT FIT class I look at the muffins in the glass case and laugh at them. read more
