What is the deal with this place? When I see the word museum, I'm thinking somewhat curated. I'm not looking for the Met. The outside is fabulous, and gives the impression of the wonders that await inside. And then...nothing. It's a big gymnasium/auditorium/multipurpose room. Nice chronological picture display of each year's outside design. Some cute corn-related knickknacks in a curio cabinet but no story about what they are, age, potter, etc... If corn is so important to this area, where's all the corn stuff? I wanted corn- themed foods (at least some roasted corn on the cob!), corn fridge magnet or Christmas ornament, something commemorative of my stay in SD and the corn!!! Very disappointing. read more

This was a little underwhelming. I was expecting more, but it was still beautiful and informative. The interior has a linear diagram of the history of the Corn Palace which was very interesting. The outside was being redone the day we went, but you could still see the beauty of the side of the palace. The town itself is so nice and beautiful. Definitely worth the trip. read more

Sure it's not a destination but it is definitely worth the stop as you tour the plains states. The World's only Corn Palace has served Mitchell since 1892 for an assortment of functions to this day. The Palace murals are redecorated each year, very intricate and made out of ALL corn with the color scheme representing the theme for the year. Entry is free. Concessions, restrooms, and a entire gymnasium-sized gift shop are available. Street Parking. Restaurants within walking distance. The Palace appears to be the pride and joy of Mitchell and is worth a visit. read more

Great stopping point on a road trip East or West depending on where you're coming from. Free entry and lots of informative plaques. Very corny as you will see upon entering or looking through a side window, but definitely good to see for a first time visit. They were setting up for a meeting and popping popcorn at 8:00AM! The exterior was neat with the corn designs. They were actually working on (dis)mantling one that morning when I was there. At dawn it's beautiful with the husk glowing purple (or other colors as it shifts throughout). There is a free parking lot that is a little bit tricky to locate. Pay attention to the road signs. It's a bit behind and one block away from the Corn Palace itself. Bathrooms are a plus too! (for road trippers) There's a second floor with featured work from an artist and it's a nice eye-breaker from the rolling farmlands whilst traveling across I-90! Happy Visits! read more

I've never seen anything like it. Very strange building but also very resourceful use of the local product. The inside is essentially a half court arena for the local basketball teams and some concerts, craft shows, etc. There is a fascinating history all along the foyer and corridors of this building and there is a large gift shop across the street. The interesting thing is the uniqueness of the yearly designs on the outside of the building and that it's been going on since the late 1800's! Wow. I had heard of this place and as we were driving through the area we had to stop and see it for ourselves. Of course we bought a tub o' popcorn at the concession stand and the worker told me they used local corn for the popcorn. It's good to stop and see the history of this place when you are driving through the Southern part of South Dakota. Great tourist trap. One more item crossed off the ol' bucket list. read more

Fun place to check out. A ton of work goes into transforming the outside of the corn palace into beautiful works art every single year. Had saw a PBS special about the Corn Palace years ago and totally forgot about it. Glad we saw the billboard while we were headed west to the Badlands. Was great to take a break and stretch our legs and take in the folk art and learn a little more history of the Palace. Free admission and it's Pet friendly!! Our 90 pound Golden Retriever walked around the inside on a leash with us. The air conditioning as great for all of us. Tons of souvenirs on the gymnasium floor. Clean bathrooms. No issues parking. It's really a gymnasium with stadium seating filled with souvenirs. It was very clean, unique and if you have 10-20 minutes it's worth it. A short drive from the highway. If driving cross country, make this a gas stop and visit the palace for free and bring your camera and a credit card for gifts. Lots of neat souvenir ideas. read more

Oh this place is so beautiful. It was recommended to me by some friends online while i was visiting Badlands national park. It so exciting to know that they change the decor every year and everything is decorated with corn and corn husk. They have alot of exhibit but ONLY thing i didnt like was they do not serve steamed and fresh corn on the cob. But its a must visit read more

We had been here several decades ago and, as with that visit, is is a quick but interesting stop to see the way the building is decorated with various parts of the corn plant. Currently the Corn Palace has been decorated as a salute to our military theme and, as in the past, they've done a great job again. Besides just looking good, the Corn Palace offers a venue for various entertainment and sporting events in addition to being a unique tourist attraction. We walked around outside to get a good look at how they decorated it for their tribute to our military. Then we went inside to see what they had done there. The Corn Palace is definitely a useful multipurpose building and worth a slight detour off the Interstate. Besides, you should get out and stretch every couple of hours. read more

A perfect short stopover on a trip out west. All things corn going on corn here! Admission is free (almost unheard of today) so browse around and have a seat to see a short video on the history of the corn palace. The interesting and creative murals on the walls are made of 15 different colors of corn and is quite an undertaking to complete each year as they change the murals. This venue is also used for basketball games, concerts, etc. and has a history of famous people that entertained there. The gift shop area covers the basketball court and has lots of corny stuff to buy. On the exterior, corn murals cover the front and sides of the building. If you are into unusual touristy stuff and need a driving break, the Corn Palace fits the bill. read more

A great place to stop and stretch your legs when driving through a less than exciting part of South Dakota. Clean bathrooms and good ice cream across the street. This is an adorable little spot located right off the freeway in South Dakota. Definitely not worth coming to unless you need a break from the road. There isn't much to do inside. They have some beautiful corn art, but the majority of the attraction is just a gift shop. They do have a short video that they play giving history about the palace and how they make the art -- definitely worth watching. The attraction is free, so I guess I shouldn't expect much, but I wish they would at least have some sort of snacks or corn food that customers could sample (other than popcorn they sell...). It would even be worth it to pay a small fee for admission if it meant trying snacks! read more

It's free so if you are driving by I suggest you stop in to stretch your legs. Not much more than an arena with murals around it that are made of corn and a movable souvenir shop in the middle of the floor. If you walk around part of the arena on the outside you can get some history about it. The outside of the building changes yearly so we will swing by if we are in the area again but just to look at the outside. Looks like it has some fun shopping around it though and some photo ops. read more

How could we not stop at the Corn Palace on our trip across SD to the National Parks? We were hitting all of the classic tourist attractions (traps?). We found the historical displays inside the building to be quite interesting and well done. Of course the ears of corn artwork on the inside and outside of the building is Americana at its best - they really have this medium down. Actually my favorite learning was that the local high school nickname is the "Kernels". Corny! It helps that this palace is free and it is worth a short detour. read more

I have to say it: I loved visiting Corn Palace! It's quirky and silly and so random - a perfect road trip stop if it's not going to take you too far off course! (If it will take you out of the way, you may or may not want to stop. Keep reading!) The palace itself is pretty neat looking. Much larger than I expected! The interior is interesting... there's a museum type setting upstairs with images of the Corn Palace through the years (my understanding was they designed a new Palace each year with the corn harvest, so there were subtle differences in the photographs to reflect that). There was also some artwork. Outside of that, there was a large seating area - like where you'd watch basketball - and the center was FULL of Knick knacks and souvenirs. Basically, it was a giant gift shop, even though there's a gift shop across the street as well. The souvenirs are corny. Really, a lot of it is corn themed... hats, shirts, socks, magnets, etc. They had corn jam, popcorn, and other corn related treats to buy as well. There was a good amount of wildlife related items and other odds and ends, too. Around the Corn Palace are some little shops and restaurants... you can easily grab an ice cream cone and then take your photo with the little corn cob guy outside! The Corn Palace itself is exactly what it seems - a strange, but fun & quirky little stop for travelers to chortle over on their way to elsewhere. Because there's so much right around it, I say it's a good place for a break in your travels and for a little silliness. Enjoy! read more

Very interesting hall. They are waiting on this year's corn harvest before removing the current murals. Still, up close, one can see the ways the corn and grasses are nailed and stapled into plywood. Next year's drawings are on display. We had a great visit and ate lunch at the Scoreboard Pub and Grill next door. read more

I mean, it's a tourist thing for sure. But it was a nice break from our loooong road trip, and they let dogs come in as long as they're on a leash. There's free admission, and a few basic snacks for sale. Doesn't take long to see the whole place, which includes several corn art mosaics. The outside corn art changes out over the years. Right now there's a tribute to the military. Little kids won't care about most of it. There's a big gift shop inside the arena area that's full of knick knacks. Lots of corn themed stuff, some wildlife toys and art, and a good amount of (culturally appropriated) Native American art. Yeah, I wasn't big on the dream catchers and pipes and things like that being sold as trinkets, especially as trinkets that aren't benefiting Native artists. Anyways, it was a pleasant, albeit not that intriguing, visit. read more

7/3/19 Fortunately, it was still light enough at 8PM to get some photos of the Corn Palace. It's a fun place to see and you have to have your photo taken with Corny! I'm glad they have kind of an explanation across the street showing the ducks and how they construct the artwork (mosaics?). It helped me explain to my son that we were looking at pictures made out of corn. :) We didn't go inside this year because we've looked around in the past. It's totally free, though, and another great place to get out and stretch your legs. read more

We were out here touring and there was no way I was going to pass up the CP. There's not much to it but it's still cool to see it up close and grab some squished pennies and other momentos. One thing that bugged me while walking around the area is that no one was selling corn on the cob or any other corn delicacy. If this were Los Angeles you would see the corn man, corn shack, corn ice cream, and corn everything edible for sale. read more

This is a palace??? Where's the corn crown? Corn throne? Any corn at all aside from bagged popcorn? Nope. Not so much as a corny joke to be seen; just a pair of old sneakers adorned with corn kernels, and a few silly corn picture board cutouts. There's a wall story that lost my interest after the second board, and an auditorium with some corn on the walls. Paintings are upstairs. That's it. Ten minutes spent here is about 10 min too long. This is a one star stop with another star for duping us into stopping. So many missed opportunities at this place to be corny. There's hardly any corn to be seen, and the inside looks like remnants from a child's 4-H meeting. We too (like another reviewer) bought a bunch of crap in the gift shop, just to remind ourselves to periodically say to each other, "Do you remember that stupid corn palace?" read more
