Dr. Motwani has been my doctor for over a decade. He performed a procedure on me over a decade ago that required two different types of approaches. Without my contacts or glasses, it was impossible for me to see more than a few feet in front of me. Even then, things were very blurry. Dr. Motwani took me from seeing nothing to better than 20/20 vision. Fast forward some 12 -15 years later. I am much older now and having trouble seeing cataract surgery in my left eye. Nothing was helping. No glasses or contacts allowed me to see out of it once after the surgery. I landed back at Dr. Motwani. It turned out the cataract surgery altered the shape of my cornea. Hello, My story: I had a 4 year journey, starting in 2018, to have my left eye cornea repaired by Dr Motwani, as I was experiencing visual disturbances and irregular astigmatism for over 15 years after a botched Lasik procedure by another surgeon in 2002. For correction, I gave up on Scleral lens fittings, back in 2003, that tried to vault over the issue of a central island and irregular shape cornea because the lense would cloud up after 4 hours of use, and besides still needed glasses over the lense to see. Dr Motwani gave me hope after a long search for a possible solution. In 2010, the famous Dr Wang of Nashville informed me that my hope for correction to my situation was topography guided and that the laser hadn't been approved yet in USA. So, I patiently waited year after year for approval. In 2018. I learned of Dr Motwani's new protocol, LYRA, and he had 2 years experience on this laser, the Alcon EX500 (former Wavelight) to perform topography guided Lasik, which was finally approved for USA by FDA in 2016, but was being used in Europe successfully for over 10 years prior. Dr Motwani tried his best to repair; however, the first Lasik attempt he performed in 2018 resulted in disaster, 5 days later, leaving me with epithelial ingrowth nightmare. Had I known prior that there was a 50/50 risk of 'epithelial ingrowth' by lifting up an existing Microkeratome created flap, that is over 3 years old, I may have declined to proceed with Lasik surgery, and gone with PRK instead. Dr Motwani, if you're reading this review, please inform patients of this risk of epithelial ingrowth, as I read other reviews with the same nightmare outcome. Thank you in advance for this consideration, sir! I had a local surgeon in Oklahoma who agreed to see me but was reluctant to lift the flap to try to wash away some of the cell invasion (epithelial ingrowth) with saline squirts. After Motwani consultation with the Oky surgeon, he agreed to attempt the cleanup of cells; however, peripherally, he was to afraid to, siting that to risky, that there would be a good chance of additional cell invasion if he lifted the flap too much, in the initial area of intrusion. It's these remaining cells that have caused my grief and aggravation. In the meantime, I continued to see my corneal specialist locally as Dr Motwani had insisted. This corneal specialist noticed that the epi ingrowth cells outside were still linked underneath the flap, that the colonization had to be unlinked, so I flew back to San Diego for another procedure. Back in California, Dr Motwani attempted to clean up, the best he could, these now solified colony of epithelial cells, alongside the flap edge, that left me with a shim of cells, raising the edge of the flap of my cornea, and now I realize that scaring must have ensued later, as a result, which I learned from my latest doctor, over 4 years later. Back home, my corneal specialist seemed pleased with the results of the cleanup. Hey, Dr. Motwani, that was great advice to keep following up with my specialist. To Dr Motwani's credit, he never abandoned me throughout this 4 year ordeal, and I owe him a debt of gratitude for that. Ironically, I don't think he would ever admit that the high spot and scaring from epi-ingrowth would have this adverse lingering effect on my vision today, which, if so, would be quite bewildering, whilst the evidence is clear that only a Scleral lense can resolve. In summary, in this bad eye, I endured in total, 2 Lasik and 5 PRK surgeries between 2018 - 2022 with Dr Motwani, and he was able to eliminate virtually all the astigmatism, on the last retry; however, visual disturbances and irregular astigmatism persists due to the remaining high spot alongside the edge of the flap with scaring, resulting in a lost of 2 lines of vision. After each surgery, I always followed up with my local specialist, bewildered that I had lost 2 lines of vision - yet I kept hoping that each additional surgery would restore it, not realizing that over coming the epithelial ingrowth was really an exercise in futility. Still looking for a solution to my dilemma, I learned that soft contact and spectacle correction was an exercise in futility, too, so I thought I would try my last hope to inquire about Scleral lenses again. So, in Oct 2022, just 4 months after my last PRK surgery with Motwani, I was informed that Scleral technology has really evolved in the last 19 years, since the last time I tried, in 2003. Well, I'm happy to report - the good news is that custom scleral lenses have advanced, and I've found a local doctor who has given my vision back. I'm so grateful! I can drive at night again! So, my advice would be, for others, considering an enhancement or repair, if you have an old flap, created with a Microkeratome, is to not lift it, IT'S NOT WORTH THE RISK, but instead have Dr Motwani consider custom trans-epi PRK, 2 stage, as he is the best in my opinion. I was a 1.5 prescription for contacts for several years now and the very first day after lasik I can already see 20/15 (better than 20/20) wow! I'm so impressed they told me to wait a full week, it will get even better! The lasik took 10 minutes and I didn't feel a thing, not even an ounce of pain. I cannot believe it was so easy. I want to share how I my vision has been dramatically improved by Dr Motwani at Cornea Revolution, San Diego, CA! 28+ years ago, I underwent Radial Keratotomy to correct my highly myopic condition (6+ diopters) and acute astigmatism in both eyes before LASIK was available. My RK results were surprisingly good though nearly the maximum number of cuts were required (24 cuts in my RT eye and somewhat fewer in the LT!) Truly life-changing. I had PRK laser correction performed by Dr. Motwani April 2020. I was -3.5 in the left eye and -3.25 with high astigmatism in the right. The process was actually quite simple for me: 1. Set up an appointment and came in for a consultation and talked directly with Dr. Motwani about which procedure I wanted to have done based on my individual need. He gave me an in-depth packet of what the procedure is about and the phases of recovery specific to what procedure was done. At this time they also took multiple measurements of my eyes. 2. Appointment day. They bring me into the operating room and perform the procedure. The procedure itself was uncomfortable but easily bearable and there was no pain involved. It took about 10-15 minutes and I was done! I couldn't see much after the procedure so you better bring someone to drive you home. I then get some meds from Dr. Motwani and purchase a couple more at a local pharmacy; relatively cheap. He will give you an insurance card (if you don't have any) you can use to purchase the meds at a cheaper price 3. Recovery Phase: Oh my GOD. I wouldn't suggest having PRK done unless you REALLY need it. I was as blind as a naked mole rat for the first 3 days and felt the walls to get around the house. My eyes were very sensitive to light, so I had to keep them closed/barely open. The pain was very tolerable and Dr. Motwani provides more than enough to get through it. I only needed to use it the first two nights so I could fall asleep with my protective goggles on. After a week my vision started improving, less sensitive to light, and no pain at all. I could read, but still slightly blurry. I also was able to drive, just wear sunglasses and you're good to go. 3. NOW (5 months later): WOW PERFECT. The world has never looked so beautiful T_T. I often stare at plants and random objects now to test my visual acuity and it is AWESOME. Plus I can get punched in the face now without having my contacts fly out. I don't have to worry about getting sand in my eyes. I don't have to keep buying contact lenses, I can drink to my hearts content and not have to worry about falling asleep with contacts on. No contact lens solution; no nuthin. Ok, I digress. But seriously this is life-altering, life-changing, life-improving stuff. a BIG thank you to Dr. Motwani for providing his service along with his awesome staff. TLDR. I came here for a lasik consultation and enjoyed my experience here. Dr. Motwani and his staff were excellent and I learned a lot coming here. He taught me a lot about lasik and PRK and it was very helpful in my consultation journey. Now I'm gonna add some caveats that may bother some other patients, but didn't bother me. Dr.Motwani is a very smart guy but he is very direct and honest and that can bother some people because it can come off as rude or condescending. Nobody in this office was wearing a mask and that can also bother some people who are looking for a more medical feeling office. Like I said, none of these bothered me and these wouldn't stop me from coming here for my lasik/PRK. Ultimately it came down to price for me, as I decided to go to TJ to get mine done. His facility is amazing and everyone was very professional. Every step of the process was explained to me. Prior to my visit with Dr. Motwani 11/2022, without corrective lenses, I was unable to see the large E on the eye chart. 1 year later and my vision without corrective lenses in my left eye is 20/30 and my right eye 20/50. I chose Dr. Motwani for radial keratotomy (RK) repair surgery after a years-long exploration of my options, surgical and otherwise, when I was faced with both my long-time scleral lens provider potentially retiring and several years of diminishing results with scleral lenses, which had worked fantastically for me for many years prior. I would *always* encourage anyone with post-RK problems to exhaust their scleral lens options first because, as RK patients know, anything can and does happen when you choose elective eye surgery; however, I was finding myself unfortunately in a dead end in that regard. Dr. Motwani, in my opinion, seemed to have the most defensible method for surgically correcting the unique optical problems of RK patients as evidenced by his peer-reviewed publications and patents. This was confirmed in my initial consultation with him (in 2020) when he accurately described how I saw through my RK corneas based on his reading of my scans and explained how the correction process would work as we both looked to the scans themselves. I had my repair surgery on both eyes in late 2021 (I told you it took a long time for me to make a decision!). This is the first step in what is often a 2-step process that Dr. Motwani uses to fully correct RK corneas. The first step is arguably the most critical step for the RK cornea, a PRK (surface ablation) procedure to smooth out the optics of the distorted cornea. Later an additional power correction may be performed to eliminate any residual refractive error. So far I've just had the first step. For me, the recovery from this PRK process (both eyes) was fairly painful for the first few days after surgery (probably about an 8 or 9 out of 10 on the pain scale), although Dr. Motwani noted to me that many RK corneas tend to respond less painfully on average. With some painkillers and drops I made it through the weekend after my surgery to the follow-up appointment the next Monday however, and after then I was fine pain-wise. For me, the time until my vision completely stabilized was quite lengthy, over a year, BUT I noticed immediately that almost all of the garbage night vision and glare I had endured for 30+ years with my RK was dramatically cleared up. I was also functional to drive after about a week and a half with 20/40 vision or better all the time in one eye and the other lagging a little behind. I did have a few prescription glasses changes during this time, but I was fully functional for work and driving, including at night, after 4-5 weeks or so. I was back working remotely within about a week with the help of eyedrops and some cheap online adjustable glasses from Amazon. Flash forward to today, nearly 2 years since I had the procedure, and things are looking pretty good for me. The intractable veiling glare from my RK is gone, and most tricky visual situations, such as window glare, dim light, or driving at night, where visual distortions used to crowd out nearly every single thought prior to surgery, no longer bother me, which is amazing. Both eyes are markedly improved in that regard. My right eye without correction sees as well, or slightly better than the *best* scleral lens vision I'd ever had post-RK, which translates to being able to pick off most of the 20/20 line at times (20/25 is normal now for me). My left eye still has some diurnal fluctuation thanks to the original RK and sees 20/40-ish uncorrected and corrects to 20/25 or 20/30. The original RK in that eye left me a tiny optical zone that was also decentered. It appears from scans at my local optometrist's office that the optical zone is enlarged and more centered after the correction, which has reduced my RK visual symptoms, but I still have some 1-sided starbursts in that eye and some ghosting. I re-emphasize however that vision in my left eye has definitely been improved. I also have a cataract developing in that eye which undoubtedly could be affecting my visual quality at this point. Overall, the experience has been positively life-changing for me, and I'm very glad I had it done. I would give it an overall grade of A-, and I am ecstatic about the results in my right eye, with the left eye improved but lagging a little behind. I'm seeing Dr. Motwani again soon to see if there's any opportunity for improvement in the left eye and at this point I have confidence in his ability to make adjustments if he sees a clear path. That is a big statement from me as someone who is very skeptical of laser eye surgeons in general! If I remain as is, that will be fine with me. My next step will probably be addressing the cataract in the left eye unless Dr. M sees strong indication for an additional repair step for me. read more

Came in as a life long eyeglass wearer due to an astigmatism, near-sightedness, and poor nighttime visibility with starbursts. I left with 20/15 vision in both eyes. No more squinting, no more starbursts, excellent nighttime vision, and no persistent dryness. I chose Dr. Motwani over other Lasik clinics in SD County based on a combination of Yelp reviews, price, Dr. Motwani's own published research on laser vision correction, and the actual piece of equipment they use to perform the surgery. The Yelp reviews speak for themselves. Dr. Motwani's staff are friendly, on point, and knowledgeable. The reception area is immaculate, there's a Nespresso machine, modern music playing, and you can see into the surgerical room. You can puruse the abstracts Dr. Motwani has published in peer-reviewed journals. Most of it has to do with using relatively new machines for both scanning the eye and for the surgery. In fact, I had to sign a consent waiver to use some calibration devices that are state-of-the-art and still in testing. I was happy to do this. The surgical machine itself is the fanciest available, and that is mostly what sold me on choosing this clinic. Price wise, I was disappointed that this clinic does not accept any insurance including the insurance I have purchased specifically for Lasik. However, the final quote I received matched or was cheaper than other quotes received from clinics that did accept my insurance. And that's with the insurance accounted for. So essentially, it was a competitive price at around $2,000 per eye. That includes all office visits even those I had a year after surgery for follow-up. Each visit I met with Dr. Motwani personally and for more than just a few seconds. For the surgery itself, it took I would say less than one minute for the entire procedure. It was ridiculously quick and painless. I had great verbal coaching throughout the surgery, and I believe I was even given a little stuffed animal to cuddle. For the tricky stuff, Lasik patients complain of having exacerbated dry eye syndrome. I would say that was true after surgery but as settled down after a year to where it's the same as pre-surgery. And there's no major downside to irrigating your eyes more often but it can be an annoyance. Now a year out post surgery, I don't really see any difference in eye dryness and it isn't a daily nuisance. Overall, be careful about Lasik reviews because hardly anyone has had Lasik at two or more clinics before so we don't have great comparisons. But for what I experienced, I was very pleased. Dr Motwani saved my vision! A well-known LASIK doctor in Los Angeles had performed two off-center treatments to my eyes, resulting in light flares, halos, double vision in one eye that was disabling. After being gaslighted by the original surgeon, I was told by other surgeons that I would have to wear an uncomfortable corneal prosthetic for the rest of my life. A new eye doctor at UCLA told me there's a solution with a different laser, but he didn't know who was performing the procedure yet. I did my own research and found Dr Motwani was just a few hours away in La Jolla. Just one simple procedure eliminated nearly all the problem and my vision is restored thanks to this man. I can drive at night and am not distracted by distortions. I will only send my friends to this doctor for ANY LASIK procedure. It's worth the travel, and he truly has the best technology. Dr Motwani told me I might be one of "the 5%" he advised me about pre op...the 5% for which the procedure won't work. I underwent PRK surgery from Dr. Motwani and his staff back in August 2020. I had consultations at several different places beforehand. I decided on Motwani because he was able to get me scheduled for surgery on the same week as my call. Of course he also seemed reputable and capable based on the reviews here and my impression of meeting with him (I already had my contacts out of my eyes for several weeks as I anticipated getting this surgery so I didn't require waiting weeks between consultation and surgery). After the surgery (which is a pretty weird experience in its own right, but nothing painful and objectively extremely safe), I required four days of total rest but was back to work on Monday. I have been back to Dr. Motwani's office multiple times for check-ups and everything seems to have gone perfectly. I believe last time I was there I had 20/15 (might've been 20/20, all I know is that mentally I checked it off as being 'very good result'). I also haven't experienced any negative side effects at all (light sensitivity, halos, poor night vision, none of that). The receptionist and the tall gentleman (i think he's the head technician?) are very friendly personable people and everyone else has been great as well. Of course Dr. Motwani himself is also very personable and has been very patient answering my questions whenever I've been in for a check-up which I've appreciated a lot. I had my lasik eye surgery done almost 10 years ago and I have no regrets! It was fast, though a little scary, and Dr Motwani was professional, skilled, and made me feel comfortable. I'm just driving in the area and passed by and it made me reminisce on waking up the next day to clear vision for the first time in my life. Worst experience several years ago. No patient bedside manner. Then 90 days after my surgery, my vision was blurry. He re-did my right eye and I was in so much pain for several days. My father and I both had our eyes done by Dr Motwani. My father has a degenerative retinal condition so his vision was never going to turn out perfectly, but he was still happy enough with the results to recommend and pay for my surgery. The surgery itself was a breeze, not traumatic at all. There was zero pain associated with the procedure. I did experience normal pain about an hour afterwards and lasting about four hours. It felt something like a sharp headache behind my eyes. They tell you to sleep for four hours after your procedure and it would have been better if I could, but the Tylenol PM they gave me wasn't nearly strong enough to make me sleep at 11 am. For about three months after the surgery my right eye was a little funky but it settled down and is now fine. It does annoy me that my right eye used to be sharper but now my left is. It took my brain a while to adjust to that. I also get a small amount of glare when watching tv from too far away at night, but I shouldn't be doing that anyways. The small issues I've had don't compare to the quality of life improvements. Being able to see when I wake up, not worrying about losing my glasses during an accident or earthquake, seeing my feet in the shower, not having to deal with contacts, etc. I'm still looking forward to swimming in the ocean and being able to see things. One funny thing- I realized after having the surgery that I had been blaming my bad vision for not being able to see at night only to realize that it had more to do with the darkness. Lasik does not give you night vision, apparently. Lasik isn't for everyone. There are new concerns about the numbers of people who are plagued by glare and other problems. I wouldn't want the responsibility of recommending Lasik to anyone. But if you have already decided for yourself that you want Lasik, I would definitely recommend Dr. Motwani. read more

It's not only about the (successful) procedure, but about post-op service. You get free follow-ups, even if it's your wish. I used Dr Motwani in 2003 for my Lasik. I was pleased with my original results. However I started losing my eyesight again after approximately 10 Years. I went back to him (in 2014ish) for a consultation on getting a touch up and he charged me fees to examine my eyes. I was told all my follow up care was included in the price when he did my first Lasik. Additionally, he was so rude that I'll never use him again. I am a sixty eight year old male and had originally had a lasik procedure performed about eleven years ago, around 2004. I decided to have another procedure to achieve what is described as mono vision, wherein one eye is used for distance, with the other used for reading. Just came home from my post-op appointment today (Monday); got the PRK procedure done Thursday. I'm over the moon that my vision is what it is today and will keep improving. The entire staff here is absolutely amazing. I want to specifically mention Genesis at the front desk, the assistants Guillermo and Bridgette, Dom the coordinator, and Dr. Motwani himself. I was very nervous as I'd guess most people are before any major procedure. The funny part is, I spent more time being nervous about it than the procedure actually took. The whole staff was very calming and patient throughout the whole thing, and Dr. Motwani completed my procedure in 15 minutes tops. It was completely painless. The key is just to relax and trust them (don't drink coffee right before, I made that mistake). There is obviously some discomfort after the procedure. The morning after was the least comfortable, but I wouldn't say it was painful; moreso annoying. Just feels like something is in your eyes, but the drops and meds worked great and I didn't even end up using that much pain medication. Dr. Motwani has operated on several of my friends and all of them are extremely happy, which helped me make the jump. Whether you're looking for Lasik, PRK, or corneal reconstruction (he's one of the very few doctors that can do the latter), this guy knows his stuff! I was well taken care of by Dr. Manoj and staff; everyone from the young ladies at the front desk, to the technicians, to the sassy office manager (who, coincidentally, happens to have outstanding taste in bracelets) were professional, competent and warm. I felt comfortable here. Though the procedure was not fun at all, I'm definitely pleased with my Lasik investment. I can see like never before (mostly) and it's terrific AF. I say "mostly" because I'm actually back here at Motwani's right now, for a lasik touch-up. Sometimes that's just necessary for some patients, unfortunately, because... eyes. It's been a year . Its time to celebrate one year with great vision. I been wearing classes almost all my life and did a muscle structure surgery too . Don't get lasik anywhere else but here! Two majors reasons to have your eyes done here: My 61 y/o dad had +500-150 or there about he wore glasses since 5th grade & had his lasik surgery done with Dr. Motwani three years ago & still to this day can see perfect & doesn't need reading glasses like all other 60's year olds! My Headache went away: I've been a licensed optician like the rest of my family, we owned an upscale eyeware company in La Jolla for almost #25 years, I say that- to say this...
