This is my first review for Dr. Nahl, and a bit late since I actually saw her several weeks ago. I was scheduled for Cataract surgery on one eye and then Laser surgery for the other eye (post Cataract) the week after. In regard to the first meet and pre-surgery appointment, I have mostly all good things to report. The main issue (and reason for 3 stars) is due to confusion. I'll explain. My son and I arrived on time and chose to use the car Valet Service due to my physical limitations and time factor. We were told they close at 5pm (this is 2pm) so make sure to pick up the car beforehand. We figured no problem, should only take 2-1/2 hours at most for pre-op testing. Unfortunately, once we got in, the paperwork to complete took around 30 minutes itself (the writing was so small and hard to read), so I'm sure that put me behind others. Shortly after, I was taken in for the testing. I had a very nice, quiet, gentle man assisting me. I have never had problems with eye testing in the past (having done this surgery before), however, it was confusing at times. He really did not explain what he was going to do or what he was testing for so I just tried to follow his verbal directions which were often hard to hear. He'd say (in a barely audible tone), "blink, don't blink". Then not say anything and repeat it over and over and over. Sometimes he wouldn't say "don't blink" so I was never sure if he was repeating it bc I didn't do it right or simply bc that's how many times he needed to do it. By the time the 3rd or 4th test came up, my back was killing me from all the awkward sitting with my face planted uncomfortably in the eye machine. I began to voice how much pain I was in, having walked in with a cane and obvious mobility problems, and asked how much longer this would take. He muttered something about a test that wasn't really necessary but something this particular Dr wanted him to do. We kept doing the test repeatedly, with the "blink, don't blink" issue. My eyes were so strained and tired by that time, having done all these other tests, that it was hard for me to suddenly stop blinking unexpectedly each time, so we kept repeating it over and over. He would mutter something to the effect that the scanner was not "picking up the right range" . I kept apologizing bc I thought it was my fault that he had to repeat it so often. Finally, after all the testing, we had to wait over 30 minutes for Dr. Nahl to talk to me. And boy did she talk! She bragged a lot and kept looking at and repeating my issues and how she was going the extra mile for me. When I stated that we had been there for awhile and my back was really hurting (which she responded to with condensation), she explained that the last test didn't need to be done and in fact, there was something wrong with the scanner itself and that's why he kept repeating it. I was stunned and bit frustrated bc here I was apologizing for being such a lame patient and unable to "stop blinking" - and it wasn't me afterall. All that said, we did not leave that office until 5:15! And it was like a torture session! I even mentioned the valet parking issue several times, expressing concern about them closing at 5pm and how we would get to our car. They weren't the least bit concerned. But sure enough, it was an ordeal getting outside and then getting to our car - which they had parked several blocks away! There was no way in my physical condition that I could walk that far, so I had to wait another 40 minutes on a cold, wintery nite to finally get our car and go home in major traffic! (Thx happily to the parking security guard who had to drive my son over in his cart) Here's the best part.....! After weeks of planning, a 3 hr OV/testing and a couple of phone calls to verify everything, one week before surgery, I get a call and msg that says 'gee we're really sorry, but apparently Dr. Nahl isn't part of your insurance plan afterall, so we have to cancel the surgeries and we'll just let you know when she does accept your insurance'. Whaaatt!!!??? You have got to be kidding me! I don't care how good she thinks she is, I don't want her to do my surgery anymore - that was the final straw - and that's not even everything I could add to this review about my experience. Anywho, do what you want with this information, but I personally lost my respect for her and her office staff. read more

There are lots of Opthamologists to choose from in San Diego and I know I made the right choice. I never had to wait longer than 5 minutes in the waiting area and was never rushed. I felt well taken care of, every step of the way! Dr.Nahl chooses staff that reflect her: very attentive and intelligent. Quality care that is uniquely personal. I elected to do the monovision surgery and I am being treated for dry eye as well. The price covers several after care appointments. read more

TIPS: * Take the first Valium when you arrive for surgery and another one 30 minutes later. You'll thank me later. * Don't stress. It's literally painless. It can be uncomfortable at certain moments due to pressure but it only lasts for a few seconds. Trust me....I'm a BABY when it comes to shots, procedures, etc. This was a piece of carrot cake. I worked myself up for no reason. When Dr. Nahl said she finished the first eye, I couldn't believe it. I was like...Let's get that second eye done! * Most important tip: Before you have surgery, go to CVS, Rite Aid, Wallyworld whatever - Buy ear plugs & a sleep mask to put over your goggles when you get home. After your surgery, make sure you have water next to your bed & lock you're door so no one will disturb you. You don't want to get woken up by anything or anyone. I love my fiancé but waking me up every hour to check on me was u comfortable. That next day, I could see like never before. I made the review back in June and my optometrist encouraged me to give them another chance and was the best decision I could've made . Dr. Nahl apologized about staff issues she was having. Once we got past that it was awesome. I was diagnosed with Keratoconus which is an eye disease , bulging of the eye , which required a procedure called collagen cross linking . She is one of the few doctors that Can perform this surgery and she is. very reputable around the eye world so I was very comfortable trusting her . Everything was awesome she made me feel calm and relaxed during the procedure. She gives you a list of procedures to do before surgery and medicine s to start the night before. Very organized and simple rules to follow . Medications were prescribed to help with the healing . Extremely satisfied with my care here and highly recommend Dr. Nahl and her new staff with Marcos . He's a good person very helpful always answered every question I had. The difficult part was dealing with insurance. Let me be very clear - do not go to La Jolla Lasik. My appointment started off well, until I met Dr. Nahl. She was very rude and did not care about taking the time to answer any of my questions. She ran some tests and decided I should go for PRK, despite my corneal thickness being well within the suitable Lasik tier. At the time I had not done as much research and went ahead and scheduled the procedure. I paid a $500 deposit which no other institution asks for. The patient coordinator was very pushy and instead of answering my questions he wanted to talk about his reckless over indulgence in Europe 2 days after he had his own Lasik procedure. The entire office felt like a pyramid scheme. I had a few other consultations and went with a different place, successfully having Lasik done. The operation was flawless. I contacted La Jolla Lasik to try and discuss my $500 deposit, and after no less than 16 calls over multiple weeks I gave up trying. No one would answer my call, or the front desk clerk would put me on hold until the call dropped. I eventually had to file a dispute through my credit card provider. I am THANKFUL I didn't make the disastrous mistake of having my procedure here. Please do yourself a favor and go with someone you can trust your vision with. read more

Thanks to Dr. Nahl and her wonderful staff (Mel and Rachel) at the La Jolla LASIK Institute, my LASIK surgery was a huge success and my vision is now better than 20/20. This is one of the best decisions I have made and it is the most significant quality of life improvement I have experienced in a long time. At the age of 54, I was not sure if I would qualify, but Dr. Nahl was confident she could help me. During the initial free consultation, Dr. Nahl was extremely generous with her time beyond my expectations. In that and subsequent visits I never once felt rushed or pressured by her or anyone on her staff. Her careful examination, meticulous measurements, and re-measurements each time I would visit before the surgery gave me confidence that she is very thorough, that she really cares about her patients, and takes great pride in what she does. This attention to detail and calm demeanor guided me to the right treatment while leaving many options up to me. I received monovision treatment and adjusted to it almost immediately. This adjustment was facilitated by a pair of glasses that I made by combining two reading glass prescriptions to the equivalent of the prescription adjustment that would be performed on each of my eyes. I started out in the morning hating the monovision experience and took the glasses off frequently to give my eyes a break. By that afternoon I had adapted to being able to wear them for longer periods of time and actually enjoyed not having to reach for reading glasses and put them away. This made me believe that I could adjust to monovision quickly. After my LASIK surgery, I felt that I had already adjusted and was able to just enjoy the improved vision. It is AWESOME! There are so many things that I take more pleasure in because of improved vision. When I look at my kids I see the details of their faces and hair and I enjoy the experience of just looking at them. I am able to see the things in the paintings and pictures on the walls in my home that were an effort to process just a few weeks ago. My phone and computers are crystal clear at multiple distances. I enjoy seeing images in high resolution again. I am able to watch TV and see the details that I had lost a long time ago. My distance vision has also improved and it seems to still be getting a little better every day as my eyes continue to heal. I am able to be more productive and efficient in my work. All this without having to reach for glasses, clean them, and always have a pair within reach. I am liberated from that encumbrance. I am so glad I chose Dr. Nahl. My fiancé struggled with severe keratoconus, and we trusted Dr. Nahl to help him as she stated she gets "many cases" like this and she can perform surgery on him. We paid an EXTREM amount of money. After the surgeries, he was told there is no hope for his vision and he needs specific contacts. We paid more money for the contacts that she recommend but was given up on again. He never got any vision back, and his keratoconus got worse. We postponed our wedding for this because we had no money left and he was getting worse. We couldn't afford much after. We trusted this doctor because you would think she would actually help. After years of searching we came across another surgeon. He stated that Dr. Nahl performed the wrong surgery and is a beginner. She knew that doctor specializes in Keratoconus and was able to treat him/ bring his vision back however she decided that money was more important to her then my fiancés vision and did the wrong surgery instead of referring us to him. My fiancé had surgery 3 months ago on both eyes with him (the doctor that she was supposed to refer us to). He had to go through suffering again, when he only should've gone through it once. However the doctor kept his promise and he is getting his vision back with NO contacts and his keratoconus is going away and he shows us proof while doing exams. We lost tons out of pocket, had to go through stress and depression, was lied to, and had my wedding postponed because of THIS doctor. Do not go to her!!! It's a scam. read more

I really have mixed emotions about this place. Dr. Angela Nahl is amazing at what she does, it's just what follows that's the problem. Financing in house was a joke & I felt lied to seeing I was promised things they couldn't follow through with & ended up just charging it. And my follow ups have been nothing but a pain. I have constantly been rescheduled with every appointment after having the procedure. This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have a job or life to tend to, but when you have to request time off to go to appointments & its the same appointment you're having to request for off time & time again...it becomes a problem. I work Monday-Friday & don't live locally, so it's hard finding time as it is. I just feel if there are certain hours the doctor isn't available...don't allow clients to schedule appointments during those times. So just take that into consideration if you decide to go with La Jolla Lasik. This review was wrote 5 years ago (2017) & I forgot to post it ‍ lol. My eyes are still doing wonderful & I do hope that they have improved their scheduling since then. I still refer people to her office because regardless, she did an amazing job with my eyes, 5 stars. And have not had any issues with dry eyes, halos or needing to use eye drops on a regular basis (if ever). They just need to work on how they handle business. The surgery itself, they have down pack. I want to share my experience so that it may be of assistance in helping others choose the right doctor. I went in for a consult two months ago. We met three times prior to my pre op. I told Dr. Nahal during my consult that I have a bleeding disorder, VWD. I paid a $500 deposit then scheduled my pre op. During this appointment I reminded her assistant that I have a bleeding disorder who said that was fine. When Dr. Nahal came in I reminded her as well. She thanked me for telling her then said that I would be putting myself at major risk having Lasik and we needed to do PRK. She gave me a booklet, told me I could ask her assistant any questions I may have, then walked out. Had I not brought this up after stating it during our consult and having it written down on my medical history I would have undergone a surgery that may have put me at risk for complications, a poor outcome, & vision impairment. On top of this a multitude of other things occurred during this visit such running two hours over our appointment, lack of communication that I needed to have two additional appointments within 3 days prior to surgery, and Dr. Nahal being extremely rude during my pre op visit. Lastly, her assistant told me I'd be able to still catch my flight the next day prior to surgery. However, after a phone call with Dr. Nahal the next day, due to the anxiety & lack of communication about the new procedure, she said recovery could take 4-7 days. She tried arguing with me saying that she did not see it in the notes that I have VWD or it wasn't where it needed to be although I had specifically pointed it out to Rachel, her assistant, after the incident. At the end of the day I just wanted to be heard. I wanted to be able to ask Dr. Nahal questions I had regarding this other procedure. She was short with me and never apologized or took in any responsibility for the risk she could've put me in, how snappy she was that day, or the time I wasted setting up the surgery, taking off of work, and planning around it. I am now currently having to dispute the deposit with my credit card company since her office refuses to give it back. I am seeing another local doctor with the same experience and many awards, and am paying significantly less. With that being said, I wouldn't recommend Dr. Nahal to anyone. read more

While any doctor would've given me the procedure in no time Dr. Nahl took months (3 months to be exact) to help me battle my dry eye diagnoses with even sending me to specialists for blood work. She's persistent in being an advocate for your health and the best possible outcome. I went to Dr. Nahl's office hoping to have enhancement LASIK. I did not have to wait long in the waiting room. The office staff was wonderful and very helpful. However when Dr Nahl came into the room where my husband and I were waiting she introduced herself. She then said that this was her business, all of it. I think that was quite odd. She said that her staff said I couldn't see a thing from the tests that they performed on me. I said, excuse me. She said, now just breath, breath. She then had me look into a machine and said you have a cataract. She left the room. Had someone else come in and talk to me about how much it would cost to have a full work up on my eyes. The estimate was quite high. I told the girl thank you but I would think about it. In my opinion Dr Nahl was very very unprofessional. I would never go back. read more

I came here for a lasik/PRK consultation, but ultimately decided to get my procedure done in TJ to save money. Dr.Nahl and her staff were excellent and very kind. I would have no issues recommending people to come here for a lasik consultation. I can't speak to the quality of their procedures but they made me feel very taken care of. Do not recommend Dr. Nahl for Monovision. Really bad experience, went for LASIK, first apt she said I was not a candidate for Monovision sx bc of what I do for a living, since I never heard of Monovision and it was not for me, I did not care to ask anything. Second apt, pre-op, the nurse was great, but Dr. Nahl, came in a rush, did a very quick exam, and then said that I was a candidate for monovision, I asked why she changed her mind, but since she was in a hurry, gave a quick explanation, I told her that stuff looked blurry to my when I use both eyes (using the lenses that she was testing) she said that I was going to see like that for 3 days max after surgery and then it was going to be good and for my age, it was recommended. I trusted her dx that I was a good candidate for monovision sx, had the surgery and it has been a nightmare ever since, told her I wanted to be reversed within 3 weeks, but a year later still won't be able to get it reversed due to dry eye. Needless to say, I struggle when I work. Don't recommend her at all. read more

I can't be more pleased with the results of my surgery, and the Primo treatment I received by everyone there. I was totally dissatisfied with my daughters appointment today. Dr. Angela Nahl was not kind from the time she walked in the door. Her staff was wonderful, and they deserved the 3 stars . My 35 year old daughter has suffered a ruptured grade five brain aneurysm which led to a stroke on her left side of her body. The doctor seemed so upset that my daughter was unable to hold the eye covers over each eye looking at the letters that appeared in the window. A couple times the doctor walked over to the caregiver and took it out of her hands and said this is not the way things are done. We got done with the exam and the doctor was very cold told my daughter that she could not help her causing my daughter to absolutely have a melt down in her office. She has had such a rough time and for this doctor to make myself my daughter and her caregiver feel lesser than her. We left that office and there's no way we will ever return. read more

She's a pretty conservative doctor, which fit me perfectly. I had a high myopia and astigmatism in my right eye, so she recommended PRK which has a longer recovery time but had less risk for me. I went to a couple other doctors and never even met the surgeons (only their representative optometrists). Dr. Nahl came in during the consultation and explained to me the results of all the tests as well as the science and studies behind the tool she uses to decide PRK vs LASIK and the whole process of the surgery. It was amazing. I felt like I knew exactly what I was getting into. Post surgery, I am healing extremely well and would have paid double for it! Dr. Nahl was the best choice I could have made. I've called her office manager, Patrick, multiple times at random hours with questions and he's picked up right there, on the spot. If you are considering PRK or LASIK, it's a life changer. I was reluctant at first, but after talking to Dr. Nahl I felt like I would be in good hands. It turns out throughout this whole process I really was. One note on pricing: she is not the cheapest. I will say, if you are rock bottom price shopping for your eyes, do not consider this surgery. If you feel comfortable with other doctors and they're cheaper, by all means go ahead. This is where you want to go for laser surgery. Shop around all you want, but you'll come back to Dr. Nahl. OVERALL IMPRESSION I wanted to wait until the results of the surgery matched my personal opinion of the whole process, so that this review would be substantive, and not just subjective. I only say that because I hold such a high opinion of Dr. Nahl, Patrick and Jackie, that I didn't want to do them the disservice of offering empty praise. They deserve every bit of proper praise for their work. Bottom line up front is that I could not have had a better team performing a procedure that involves something I find personally valuable as my vision. Here it is, just shy of two months in, and I'm seeing on the raggedy edge of 20/15. I CAN NOT BE HAPPIER with my results and my choice in Dr. Nahl and the team. They say the chances of mishap or injury are miniscule with PRK, but even so, the La Jolla LASIK professionals spare no effort to guarantee a successful outcome. Even in what seemed to be the least important measurements, Dr. Nahl and her experts tested and re-tested to repeat the results. Nothing was left to chance, and they did so calmly and meticulously. Patrick was my primary question fielder, and he always went out of his way to patiently explain the results, why they measure the way they do, and what I should expect in the coming weeks. I could call him, and he'd answer anything I had. I bet I could have asked him about how the weather worked and he wouldn't miss a beat. If picking your eye doctor on sheer scientific method and perfectionism, this should be your office. But they are more than that. They go to the greatest length to make sure you KNOW you're being taken care of. THE PROCEDURE I have fairly severe dry eye in my left eye, also slightly affecting my right; a service related injury. Nothing too serious, except when going without sleep for more than a day. I had seen several opthalmologists for treatment, and had been on several waiting lists for PRK over the years, but Dr. Nahl recommended Xydra for a month pre-op, and then the operation. When I went in for the surgery on July 14th, my eyes were better than they had been in years. The surgery was at a the San Diego Eye Bank, as their equipment takes up an entire room. The building is shared by other opthalmology businesses (it's in the name), but Dr. Nahl was the one performing the surgery. She had a prep specialist who did one final eye exam, but Dr. Nahl, in true fashion, had to have several looks at my eyes again. She had hands on the entire surgery itself, and both eyes took 10 minutes or less, including the local and prep. She had the eye guard on and was sending me home to sleep before I could say a proper thank you. I won't go into the details of the recovery; I've already written more than most will likely read, and there's oodles of personal blogs out there if you're really worried. Besides, everyone is different, so if you have better or worse vision immediately, or less or more pain, it's all personal and your body will react how it's going to, regardless of what comments you read on webMD.
