Although it's…read morevery close to our home, I drive further to other independently owned small bookstores -solely because of the employees terrible attitudes here. It's sad because Book Passage has fantastic events, classes, speakers, and more. But the employees are SO useless and act like you're inconveniencing them when you ask for help to find things you'd like to buy. On my visit yesterday, I was shopping for some gifts for my former students and their parents (in SoCal). Naturally, this gift was to be special and I wanted to find the perfect thing for them. When I asked the woman (not sure of her name, but she has red hair in a long bob) where NorCal specific items were, she half motioned with her hand and said it was in the other building. When I went back to ask another question, she stared at me and then walked off. Another employee begrudgingly helped me. The two women working in the other building were deep in personal convo and looked SO annoyed when I asked about the gift items area. When I was rung up, there was no "thanks" or "have a good day", just silence. Wow, these ladies are so rude and such a buzzkill!! I debated leaving a review, but after I came to check other patrons experiences, I see this is their M.O and it should be a good warning to all that shop here.

So nicely laid out and "booky." I love the vibes. The employees were friendly and helpful. They have a very good stock of Jelly Cat plushies - which was unexpected. I think this is a fabulous spot to buy a gift. There are some big chairs to sit in and ponder one of the great books. I wish I had more time to hang out and I can't wait to come back.

I took my husband here for his birthday for a book, as we've done since we met. We are bookish, believing in the quiet power of a well turned page, obsessed with learning new things, exploring the lives of others through biographies, reinforcing our compassion and empathy with fiction, staying curious through sci-fi, immersing ourselves in history, and enjoying the beauty of well written words. My husband picked a sci-fi book from a British author we have enjoyed reading in the past. I found nothing. Lots of TikTok girlie/booktube titles. I almost bought a cute birthday card but changed my mind. There are a couple of big chairs to sit in, a modest amount of carefully curated offerings, and friendly service. It was good.

I find this a very professional attitude to show concern for other humans. I've been to this bookstore twice in a month and am happy to say I'll be back soon. I said hello and explained that I was looking for help finding a white elephant gift for a coworker. I asked for some suggestions. Her response was, "I don't know your coworker." Seriously? I barely know my coworker either. Needless to say, she was no help at all. I ended up turning around and helping myself since I clearly wasn't going to get any assistance. As I was leaving, she said something like, "I'm sorry if I offended you," without a smile. Great. I went down the street and walked into two other stores, explaining the same white elephant gift dilemma. At both stores, the retail clerk took the time to walk me around their store, offered ideas and suggestions to see what might work. Of course, I ended up buying the gift at one of those stores. Novato Copperfield may want to consider training employees to be more helpful when customers ask unusual questions-but then again are white elephant gift questions in December really so out-of-the-ordinary? Just now I searched for "white elephant Christmas gifts" on Amazon and found a ton of somewhat amusing suggestions. I'm not a Prime member and I tend to avoid all thing Amazon, but at least their algorithm/AI is actually helpful...

This is a Friends of the Marin County Library store, which means that volunteers lovingly keep the place clean and organized. All of the shelves are clearly listed, with price lists adorning the walls. Some of the books are even discounted further (individually priced on the cover), with an entire back room marked as Clearance (along with the carts outside the front door). Clearance books are mostly $1.00, and most everything else is under $5.00. Community members frequently donate items so the shelves are refreshed regularly. Each time I come by, I always find at least one or two titles to take home (and usually more than that)! There is free street parking, as well as a parking lot in the back of the building. And they only take cash or checks.
