The manager really knows her stuff and has an inspiring and new display in the windows with a monthly theme or two (eg Black History Month plus Valentine's Day for February) with books that really appeal to the kiddos, not just pretty-cover or famous-author books that grow old on the first read. She's also saved me a few times when I'm searching for the language to discuss some idea or issue with my child - she'll come up with a few books on the theme I mentioned, plus a few on relating topics that would never have occurred to me. The rest of the staff also very helpful and knowledgeable. Truly, this kind of service is why local businesses beat the internet. read more

This is hands down the best place to get children's books. I get high marks for every gift I get from Mr Mopps. They have a wonderful selection of smart, funny, and inclusive books. There is something there for every child. One year I went in looking for a book for a mixed race adopted Tom boy girl and came out with the perfect book. The next year I wanted a book for her to deal with having a newly adopted brother. Another time I went in looking for a book got a young boy in the family that we think might be gender fluid or LGBTQ. Can I just say this is one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. I wrote them with a very specific request, and Devin went above and beyond to help me find what I was looking for. I had never been to the shop but when I went to pick up my order I was blown away by all the cool learning toys and all the knowledge Devin had on appropriate toys for different ages. I was worried when my favorite toy store opened this bookstore because the rent must have doubled and it's hard to make a profit with books. But when I walked in, I fell in love with the place, they did such a beautiful job and had such an awesome selection, and it was wonderful to walk from the crowded bustling toy room into that wide open lovely space. But I'm still worried about it, especially during Covid, so I hope everyone will try to do some shopping there (and at the toy store) for the holidays, even though you can't experience the beautiful space right now. read more

I once dated a girl who's theory was this: the ammount a child is read to at an early age directly correlates to how smart they become later in life. If nothing else, reading/being read to clearly grows a toddler's vocabulary and comprehension, two of the primary indicators of intelligence. Even reading to a child in the womb likely has positive effects, she theorized, and i find it hard to disagree. As do actual factual scientists. In short, make your child smarter- take them here. protip: stop by on the way out of the toy store section of Mr Mopps' next door, as a semi-bribe if you're having trouble getting your kid to leave. Yay, a real Children's bookstore in Berkeley. In 2010 when Mr. Mopps' nearly shut down the bookstore annex was lost and rented out to a different business. Now the new Mr. Mopps' has brought the books back, about four doors down. The place has a cozy bookstore ambiance and child oriented categories like 'Things That Go' and 'Books with Girl Characters'. Kids can be so fickle with book choice: I'm happy there is again a place I can take mine to browse. read more

I love Mr Mopps, both the bookstore and the toy store. I've been shopping here for years. The book store always has a nice selection of books so we usually buy books for gifts here, and we can find something for any kid. This is our favorite kids bookstore. We love the way the books are catalogued so that you can find books that speak to your specific interest (for example, they have a shelf of books that have a little girl as the center of the story -- which sadly, is still considered an exception to the norm of having a boy at the center). I appreciate that the bookstore is dedicated entirely to children's books, given that most of our other beloved bookstores tend to just have a small section for the kids. read more

Nina's granddaughter celebrated her 7th birthday recently and tomorrow we are gathering at Nina's. I wanted to give her a copy of "The Princess and the Goblin", which was one of my favorite books at her age. I called Pegasus on Solano and the one on Shattuck but neither had it. I remembered that Mr. Mopps' had opened a bookstore down the block from the main store, so I called them. They had it and I made arrangements to go down to pick up a copy. I was hoping they would also have a copy of "The Princess and Curdie", but they didn't, so I asked after "The Secret Garden", which had been another favorite. They did, and I bought both. The store is narrow and deep, lined w/ bookshelves on the sides. It's clean and bright and inviting. A small T-Rex skeleton tops the back wall. The staff who helped me were both friendly and seemed knowledgeable about the books. I love that there are still books for children to fall in love w/. read more

The whole Mr. Mopps experience is so great, and the couple that run it are Berkeley born and raised. The selection is excellent, the staff is knowledegable, and there is a range of prices for books, toys, etc. so you can stop in for an inexpensive last-minute birthday gift or bring the grandparents for a splurge or just browse happily. Lots of the well-known titles and a nice selection of lesser-known books, because sometimes you just get tired of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. read more

This has quickly become my favorite children's bookstore. The staff is very knowledgable and the selection is great.

the woman working on saturday april 21 handled a refund issue so gracelessly we will now buy our children's books at books inc. small retail shops are supposed to compete in part through superior customer service. this person, through her manner alone, left us feeling devalued as customers. the manager took care of the issue but clearly was put off by having to make a minor adjustment to handle a non-standard problem. did he know he was burning a customer? it all damaged our loyalty to what is actually a pretty good little bookstore, with a nicely edited selection. read more
