Slowest customer service on the planet. Behind 1 person - I was getting 6 rolls - 20 minutes later was done. Happened before. Never again. Too many employees and nobody is doing anything. When they do, clueless is an understatement. Used to be a great place. Now that its run by children - horrible. Girl ringing me out at the register did not know what Kaiser rolls are. Amazing. Had 1 customer ahead of me getting 6 items and have 5 times as many questions. Best tomato pie in PA? Well, I had to go and find out. Shop is small, but has a good selection of items to choose from. The pies are stacked on a counter ready to go which is a good sign, like they are ready for the days onslaught of customers. Service is efficient and pleasant, you can tell they get a lot of regulars there. As for the pie, it is good. The crust is very nice, its soft, but hearty enough to hold the thick coating of tomato sauce. The sauce is nice, but its very sweet. Maybe I am just vert sensitive to sweet food, but I would like it to be more on the savory side. I was in the area which is why I had to stop, but I dont know if I would make a special trip here. Tomato Pie really is not my thing. That being said, Corropolese does the best job at wanting me to like them. And for under $20 for a full pie, they aren't a bad deal either. While I've had their pies on numerous occasions, my first visit to this location was over the holidays. In the days leading up to Christmas, they don't even answer the phone! They leave a message outlining what you want to do if you want a pie for your gathering. We arrived early, as recommended by their message, and had no issue snagging one. However, given how they setup the parking lot, I suspect that might not have been the case for late arrivers. Outside holidays (and maybe the Super Bowl), I imagine they are a low-key place to visit. They have everything else you'd expect from a deli and very friendly staff to help you out. I'll continue to occasionally enjoy a piece of tomato pie and say you'd do well to give Corropolese a go. read more

Italian Bakery Tour - Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli I've been baking for the last 3 years, since COVID began, and while I've had some successes, I haven't yet mastered two native Philadelphian baked goods - Hoagie (or "sub" or "grinder") Rolls and Tomato Pie, an Italian-American/Philly take on Sicily's Sfincione Palermitano. So, one day in April 2023, I partnered with my Yelp buddy, Gerald S., to traverse the Greater Philadelphia area, visiting five well-known and respected Italian bakeries, sampling those two things. I wanted to understand the nature of those breads, to understand their common traits - size and weight, density, crumb size; and, in the case of Tomato Pie, the sweet/acid/spice taste of its sauce. Of course, none of the bakeries that I visited would share their recipes, but I hoped to return to San Diego with a good idea of how to fiddle with recipes I have on hand, to make hoagie rolls and tomato pie similar to those I ate in Philly. CORROPOLESE ITALIAN BAKERY & DELI Corropolese's was the only bakery on my "tour" that I visited twice. They were out of hoagie rolls when I tried the first time, at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday. I was disappointed, but the store can't control the flow of demand for their products. What they can control, however, is how they portion and sell their tomato pie. Not only did they refuse to sell me less than a quarter-sheet (roughly 9" x 13"), which was way more tomato pie than I wanted, but, once I agreed, I had to persuade the people behind the counter to cut it into slices for me. It would be easy to blame such difficult service on "Philly attitude," but since I was treated so well by people downtown and elsewhere in the city's suburbs, I'm pretty sure that that was just a Corropolese thing. Hoagie Rolls Corropolese's hoagie rolls were the smallest of those I sampled. They were chewy, had a pleasing flavor, and their crumb was so soft and resilient that they brought to mind Japanese milk bread, or elongated marshmallows. Their crust was lighter and shinier than is common, and their bottoms were coated with a heavy dusting of cornmeal. Corropolese's hoagie rolls weren't bad, but they were so different from the rolls I'd eaten at the old-school Italian bakeries downtown that I couldn't help wondering whether their flavor and texture were the product of science - of dough enhancers and commercial baking processes - instead of traditional recipes and techniques. The rolls were not bread you'd eat by itself, any more than you'd serve high-end grocery store hotdog buns with lasagna. But then, that's not what hoagie rolls are meant for, and since the store uses the rolls for sandwiches, I ordered an Italian hoagie (capocollo, ham, Genoa salami, Provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, oregano, oil and vinegar), to see how the rolls performed. The sandwich was perfectly serviceable lunch box food, like the hoagie you'd buy at Wawa or another convenience store. It was by no means special, and I finished it thinking that if I lived in the area, I might order ten of Corropolese's hoagies to serve at a football watch party, but I'd seldom buy one for myself. The Numbers: Corropolese's hoagie rolls were 9" long, 7.5" in circumference and weighed ~96g. A 4" midsection weighed ~53g. I estimate the density of the baked rolls at 0.18064 g/cm3. Tomato Pie Notwithstanding local affection for Corropolese's tomato pie, I can state without reservation that it was the worst one among the five I sampled. Its crust was greasy, and it was so bready, soft and chewy (there's that shokupan thing again) that there was little discernable difference in texture between its edge and its crumb. And what was worse, the pie's sauce offered only sweetness; imagine eating thinned-out tomato paste with the tomato flavor removed, and you'll understand why, of the five tomato pies I sampled on my "tour," Corropolese's was the only one I rejected after a single bite. I gave the rest to the folks at my hotel's front desk. Corropolese Tomato Pie is very famous around Norristown and the Philly region in general. It is sold in many delis in the city and surrounding counties. It comes in a large flat box with its logo emblazoned across the top. Inside, you find a deep red sauced thin layer of pizza dough cut up into 3" squares at the factory. It is generally eaten from the carton cold. The base is soft; more like ordinary semi-dense bread than a traditional crusty undercarriage. The sauce is mildly sweet and laid on thick and colloidal enough not to run or even drip when it is picked up in your hands for eating. Of course, there is some drippage when biting into it and lips don't quite capture every morsel. So, napkin or bib is recommended to save your shirt and pants. Admittedly, it is an interesting, not unpleasant, experience to occasionally consume one, but for me it would never be mistaken for a glorious Trenton Tomato Pie with the same name, but far different profile in taste and texture. Corropolese is more a dessert offering, than a true slice of heaven. The sugar and soft (sometimes soggy) doughy base is just wrong for me. Give me a hot crisp crusty Trenton Tomato Pie every time. Firm, scorched bottom, chunky crushed tomato slurry spread strategically across the full circumference of a round pie above a thin layer of mozzarella, is my only way to go. Touch of basil with hint or sugar/salt, as you like it, and love is in the air. Sure, give me a few squares of Corropolese for dessert afterwards to wash down with a lager from a local brewery, if you must. You can always take note by comparison. read more

It was my first time here and upon arriving, 2 people were waiting to get in and 3 more trickled in minutes later. A line started to form and people are trying to get the tomato pie. I am an out of towner who was visiting my brother in law. This deli makes delicious little hoagies. The cake selection looks unique and yummy. I tried a slice of their birthday cake and it was better than our bakery back on Long Island. Staff is refreshingly friendly and helpful. I tried the tomato pie- I don't get the appeal. Like a can of tomato paste on doughy bread. Long Island pizza has more of a savory, acidic taste with more seasoning and I definitely prefer it to what they offer here. I can't believe I never reviewed this before. It has been staple in my life since childhood. Great hoagies, desserts, great deli. But the star of the show is the tomato pie. It is crack. The sauce is addicting and the way it melts into the dough is just heavenly. The large is enormous but you will eat it all within a day. It's not pizza. It's supposed to be eaten cold. And you can't have your expectations of what it should taste like. It's an acquired taste for sure. But it was love at first bite for me. Rating should be a 4.5 I've been to over 40 different locations, and Corropolese Cheesesteaks are ranked #1 for me. Which is why my most recent trip was a disappointment. My entire roll was so empty, although the bread is always delicious, it sucked that it didn't have anywhere the amount of meat that it usually has. I brought 3 new guests today as well, and luckily, their cheesesteaks were fine. I guess when you have such a large crowd of customers at once, there is bound to be one cheesesteak that doesn't get the proper fixings. Unfortunately, that was mine. A costly misfortune for me at $15 plus. Plus an hour of driving, which with the gas prices these days, made it worse. Had to get a tomato pie because I was still hungry. Very delicious as well. Tomato pie is sensational, that sauce is so vibrant and delicious. The Italian hoagie was good, but there are better in the area (it had capicola, salami, and provolone, LTO, OV - but balsamic vinegar).
