It was a really hard decision for me to pursue the College portfolio program. I thought it would be…read moretoo difficult to combine it with my acting career and I was positive that the people who succeeded at Prima were probably just some "rare/special cases" ...but the curiosity to find out was just too tempting, so I decided to go for it and do the Portfolio, and I dove right in. At first it was a kick in the butt, I wanted to learn things "my way" and as a result of my stubbornness I didn't get the best results, but after finally conceding to the guidance I decided to let go of some preconceived notions and follow their advice. The breakthrough was immediate. Prima Materia accelerated method took hold and within a month I was lucky enough to auction a piece of my work from the sketching and drawing class. I have since built a knockout portfolio, finished the program, and now have a website. Also the true gifts have been the relationships I have made along the way in those classes as well as the internal transformation that took place from having completed the Portfolio program. I now have confidence in my ability to share my voice through art, something I didn't have before I took my leap of faith. Super happy! It's the best thing I've ever done with my time. There is so much joy. It's been a gift.

I would give it a zero if I could. This is not a class for beginners as described by the owners,…read moreit is extraordinarily expensive, the owner is completely disrespectful to her students. The program suggests "highly individualized mentorship, customized portfolio development (via zoom??) and completely non-existent guidance. I do not recommend this at all unless you live in San Diego and can attend classes in person. Outside of that- it's a total sham.

If your teen has even the slightest interest in architecture, design, or project management, do…read moreyourself a favor and check out NewSchool of Architecture & Design in downtown San Diego. Located inside the WeWork building, this four-day intensive summer program completely exceeded my expectations. I first learned about NewSchool during my sons' high school event, where representatives came to speak with students, showcase their work, and introduce the programs the school offers. After expressing interest, Maia, one of the Assistant Directors of Enrollment, personally reached out to let me know about their four-day summer intensive for high school students. From our very first conversation, she was welcoming, informative, and genuinely excited to help students explore their creativity. I enrolled both of my sons, who couldn't be more different if they tried. Watching both of them step outside of their comfort zones was one of the best parts of this experience. The program challenged them creatively, intellectually, and personally. By the end of the week, they not only had a better understanding of their individual strengths, but they also recognized areas they wanted to continue developing. One thing that stood out immediately was how seriously the school takes student safety. Parents were welcomed on the first day with an orientation and breakfast, where the staff clearly explained expectations and how we could support our children throughout the week. Access to the school's floors requires key-card entry, which gave me great peace of mind knowing security is a top priority. The experience itself was incredible. The students learned architectural software, collaborated in teams, and designed an innovative community project from concept to presentation. What amazed me most was that they accomplished in just four days what many people would need weeks--or even a month--to complete. Seeing these young minds transform ideas into professional presentations was truly inspiring. The staff created an environment where students felt encouraged to think bigger, take risks, and believe in themselves, even during moments when they questioned their own abilities. It was obvious that every instructor genuinely wanted each student to succeed. The campus is bright, modern, clean, and full of creative energy. Every space feels intentionally designed to inspire innovation. The program also went above and beyond by providing breakfast during the welcome session, lunch for the students every day, and even lunch for parents on the final presentation day while we watched the students proudly showcase everything they had accomplished. NewSchool offers programs in Architecture, Project Management, and Graphic Design, making it an excellent place for students who are exploring future career paths. This experience gave my sons valuable exposure to fields they may not have otherwise considered, and I'm excited to continue learning more about the opportunities available to them. I left this program incredibly impressed--not just by the projects the students created, but by the confidence, growth, and creativity they developed in such a short amount of time. The future is certainly bright with young minds like these leading the way. If you're looking for a meaningful, hands-on summer experience for your teen, I wholeheartedly recommend NewSchool of Architecture & Design. You won't leave disappointed--you'll leave amazed. And as always... you can thank me later.

I have always had vision and ability however, Andrea as a teacher brings out what I already know and harps on basic principles I need to have with every approach that i have been missing. From rules of thumb to color concepts and using principles when I get stuck. Class is amazing, I couldn't ask for a better atmosphere to be in and I almost can get emotional about how freeing it is to be surrounded by all levels of painters. There is always music playing, discussions with students individually with Andrea and individual lessons can turn into all of us around Andrea discussing a technique with a student. Being in Normal Heights is a great central location and the openness of the class means bystanders can walk in and be amazed at all the work we are doing. It makes you feel privileged to be there working alongside him. One of my favorite things about the class is Andrea is usually sketching during the day, painting, or reworking something of his before we get there and if we are all independently working he will revisit it. It's great to see an instructor applying his love while enhancing our own abilities. I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my money and time towards this passion.
