Just happened to stumble onto this little seaside gem accidentally. Came in for a quick burrito and carne asada quesadilla before exploring another local beach. We ended up eating here because it smelled so good. The two items we chose were one of the best quesadilla I have ever had. The carne asada was nicely seasoned which a lot of places miss this mark. The tortilla hip salsa was also really good. Portions are really big so take home (at least for us) was a must. Will definitely recommend this place to my local peeps. read more

Damn, I mean damn!!!! My friend and I stopped in for some Mexican food, after a day of shooting photos. As we walked up I noticed that the parking lot was empty, next door was a bakery and their parking lot was full. " why am I mentioning that, Read on?" I ordered a El Pastor burrito and my friend ordered a Carnitas burrito. While we waited we indulge ourselves at their free coffee bar, which had, not just coffee, but all kinds of coffee syrups that you could add to your drink, for free!!! We were given warm chips and salsa while we waited for our food, I got to say that they were very "YOU-ME" There is a nice outside patio area and on the inside they have a decorated Aztec/Mexican seemed decor. "See pictures" Ok now for the really good part, the burritos. We each were served a burrito with two sauces, one red and one green. "As always the green sauce tastes the best ;-) " The burritos were piping hot and the tortillas tasted like they were warmed on a skillet. The burrito tasted freakishly amazing!!! it had a perfect amount of blended rice, beans, meat, etc. honestly it's one of the best burritos I've had in a long, long time. After an initial great visit years ago I have noticed the quality has taken an unfortunate dive over time. For example on the latest visit the fajitas didn't have sour cream, avocado(as they did previously), guacamole, cheese or Pico de gallo. Just a bit of rice, beans and shredded iceberg lettuce. The veggies also were quite burnt. Additionally, expect to wait a long time for your food. I wouldn't expect such issues and lack of toppings from fajita that cost $27. Major bummer. read more

Spent the day on the beaches up and down Davenport and worked up quite the appetite. Decided to try this authentic looking Mexican restaurant cause what goes better with a long day on the beach? We stepped inside and saw a cozy, friendly, cute and clean environment with good smells emanating from the kitchen. Looked over the menu and saw a surprising selection of dishes, fairly priced. I go three of the best tacos I have EVER had. All I could keep saying was OMG OMG OMG! The nice lady who runs the restaurant came by to ask how everything was and it was so good I couldn't say anything else but OMG! BEST FOOD EVER! They have free hot coffee which was so appreciated after getting a chill on the beach getting a bit drenched by waves. And free water with fresh fruit. Who does that? This place! The gentleman even looked at me weird I don't even know why maybe I'm not even that hungry but anyways I ordered took about 10 minutes for a taco, even though I was literally the only one at the restaurant. This is a place that rates close to 5 stars for location - it's got a gorgeous view of the beach, and there are few food stops of any kind along this stretch. A rating of quality by value would put it more at a 3.5/5 - adequate especially when your options are limited, but scale your expectations accordingly. Truth told, the food costs twice what I'm used to getting in Redwood City (a place flush with taquerias) and tastes half as good - not bad but very mid, which is a little unsatisfying for the price. For example, the carne asada taco was chewy, not too flavorful, and quite small for $4; the $8 guacamole was mostly onion and tomato by volume and badly needed seasoning (like a hearty shake of salt or some lime). Still, Davenport is beautiful and if you're hankering for a taco while at the beach, this will scratch the itch. read more

We went here after relaxing at Shark Fin Cove, not too far at all from the restaurant. The restaurant is small and cute with lots of outdoor seating. The restroom was clean. The food was the star of the show, as it should be. I got quesabirria tacos, my siblings got carne asada burritos, husband got al pastor tacos. Everything was SHMACKIN!!!! lol. Even the horchata, and chips and salsa were flavorful. Their customer service was great also. What a great little find! We stopped here for a quick breakfast on our way up to San Francisco. The sit down place next door was pretty crowded, and we really wanted something quick to go, so we decided to try Costa Azul. Really glad we did! My wife and I each ordered breakfast burritos. Mine with chorizo, hers with sausage. Both were made to order, so took a few minutes. But was worth the wait. They were packed with meat, cheese, and potatoes. Piping hot and super delicious. Sorry I didn't take a picture, but we were driving while eating and needed to keep at least one hand on the wheel. Judging from the amount of seating inside and out, I assume this place can get pretty busy during the day. Highly recommend stopping for some really good, home cooked food. read more

There is an outdoor patio dining option that's not described on yelp yet - if the weather is nice, try to get the bar seats on the patio that face, the ocean! The grilled fish plate was delicious! This place closed early on the day I went - I got lucky that I walked through the door before 5 PM, but the business hours posted a 8 PM closing time, strange... but maybe it was a holiday change? I like that they packed the food in recyclable containers not Styrofoam and they packed it in a compostable bag. Double check your to go order has the salsa, if not, just ask. This is our favorite in Davenport, everything we have ever eaten here has been delicious and they have so many options, the kids love their burgers, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is casual & relaxed. Costa azul is not accommodating to plant based vegan eaters. Guac, chips and salsa are the only real options. They have yet to offer vegan mock meat proteins which is strange. Products from Gardein, Beyond Meat, Yves & Tofurkey are available in bulk from restaurant suppliers. Those items are cruelty free and provide as much protein as their meat counterparts. it'd be easy for the restaurant to get the new ingredients as well. Vegan vegi-protein crumbles are similarly easy to find. read more

The meat amount was generous, the heat level perfect, the consommé on the side rich, multidimensional, and fragrant. The chips and salsa were really tasty too. I was very disappointed in the burritos at this restaurant. The burrito was 2/3 rice and extremely dry. There was no flavor as well. My father and I got the asada burrito and he thought the exact same thing. The menu also said that there was sour cream in the burrito however there was none. read more

Wow. The atmosphere here is so cute. There are music videos playing on the TV indoors, there's a beautiful sunny patio, indoor seating, and seating by the windows where you can see the ocean and watch the sunset. The food is delicious and authentic. They have American food and Mexican. I ordered a side of fries, and they were piping hot. You could tell they were made fresh! I also ordered 2 Sopes, which were sooo delicious. My only complaint is that the Carne Asada was fatty and chewy. Their salsa varieties are smoky and flavorful. "You have to write a review of this place," my wife suggested after our very satisfying lunch yesterday at Costa Azul. I readily agreed. Costa Azul is in Davenport, not far north from Santa Cruz. We've eaten here before when it was another Mexican restaurant that served pretty good food. This is so much better. I hope that it doesn't suffer the similar fate of its predecessor. We called ahead after seeing the pair of reviews on Yelp. I wanted to make sure they would be open. The twin five-star reviewed appeared promising. But there were only two. And Davenport's other restaurants aren't anything special, only serviceable. The crispy tortilla chips came with a pleasantly spicy salsa that the kids didn't touch, so my wife and I indulged. Refills came quickly as did our food. Our kids both ordered the kids' cheese quesadilla. The plates were filled with generous portions of a flour quesadilla, flavorful Mexican rice, refried beans, and a little salad. I was surprised our nine year-old son didn't order his standard burrito. I asked why. He responded with wisdom beyond his years, "When I go to a new Mexican place, I order a quesadilla because if they can't make it good, nothing else will be." I understood. He followed up, "Next time, I'm getting a burrito." I didn't get a chance to take a photo of my wife's tacos piled high with meat and toppings. She really liked the asada and liked the chicken. They looked generous and tasty. I had intended to just a couple of tacos myself, but I noticed a handwritten sign taped to the counter: "We have pozole Sat & Sun". The sun is often hiding on this coastal stretch of Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. Such is the case it was yesterday: cool and cloudy. We had come here and escaped the mid-October heat of our hometown an hour and half inland. This was soup weather. Memories of past pozole spilled into my brain from the mediocre to the spectacular. I expected something in between. I was so wrong. I asked the friendly guy who was taking our order at the counter what he thought of the pozole. Without making eye contact, he stated simply, "it's good." He didn't say it with any kind of salesmanship, it was more as if he were remembering tasting it and was reporting back from a hazy dream. Shortly after everyone's food arrived, mine came with the help of three people. First came the steaming red bowl filled with pork chunks visible along with the hominy above the broth-line. Then came the plate of add-ins: cilantro, diced white onion, radishes, shredded cabbage, a small bowl of a spicy sauce, and a few lemon wedges to add citrus notes. Last was a stack of four crispy tostadas. I left my bowl unadorned as I scooped up my first taste of the corn and broth. It delivered warmth and spice. I eagerly added my toppings. I couldn't fit them all because the bowl was filled to the brim. I slowly added more as I went, making room with each spoonful of goodness. The pork was tender, tasty and plentiful. As I left, I thanked the guy at the counter. I asked him to pass on my appreciation to the chef. We'd be back. Congratulated them on opening... I was a little sad that they'd been open a few months already without us discovering it. With a full belly and a satisfying grin, we continued our drive north to go tide pooling at the beach at Pescadero. We'll be back. We definitely will be.
