This place is a must-visit in San Diego! We came here to celebrate my dad's birthday, and it truly exceeded expectations. The food, vibes, and ambiance were all 5/5, it made the whole experience feel extra special. Huge shoutout to Matt for the incredible service and for going above and beyond to make our celebration memorable. Also loved how pet and kid-friendly it is. The patio area was perfect and made it even more enjoyable for everyone!

I would rate our dinner here a 4.5. We made reservations in advance. Parking can be tricky since it's street parking and the lot across the street does not allow parking so you're at risk of towing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. He suggested getting bread with the meal so we could soak up all the sauces from our dish. We tried the croquettes with jamón, gambas al ajillo, and patatas brava. For our entree we shared the oxtail. The oxtail was super tender and the sauce it came with was great. We all shared a sangria pitcher. It was a nice dinner. Food is a little on the more expensive side but the food was good and we had a very nice experience.

What a delightful dining experience! We arrived on a Saturday at 4 pm, earlier than our reservation at 5 pm) and the waitress gladly seated us promptly. This restaurant is bigger than it seems - there are multiple seating areas like the front patio, bar, a front and back room, as well as a well secluded back patio. We were sat in the back patio and immediately appreciated the ambiance of the place. There were string lights above us, lots of plants around and even got a lit candle on our table just as the sunset started. Our server, Matt, was really outstanding. He was friendly, funny and went out of his way to give his personal opinion on the top dishes to order which we ended up ordering most of! Their menu is very extensive - there are cold tapas, hot tapas, soup/salads, and entrees such as a family style seafood paella. Tapas are meant to be shared since they do come in smaller plates, but don't be fooled, they do fill you up quickly. Here's a quick breakdown of what we ordered: Boquerones: Delicious! Pickled fresh anchovies in olive oil, accompanied by fresh garlic and parsley. Nice and tangy. I highly reccommend this if you love pickled foods! Salpicon de Mariscos (marinated seafood salad): Nice variety of seafood with a refreshing marinade. Hints of green bell pepper as well - good to order with hot tapas to help cut some of the heavy foods. Gambas al Ajillo (shirimp in garlic): Plump shrimp in a smokey oil with lightly fried garlic and a fresh lemon on the side. Good, but not something I would order again. Pulpo a la Gallega (Octopus with olive oil and garlic): Extremely tender smokey octopus. I'm very glad we decided to go with dish off a recommendation. My favorite of the day. Tapa de Rabo de Toro (braised oxtail in red wine sauce): Fall off the bone tender! Incredible oxtail, very hearty sauce and comes with some potatoes. I recommend trying this! Croquetas de Jamon: We ordered this since we didn't order Jamon on its own, and this was our way of substituing it. However, because it is a croquette, it's mainly deep friend potato with a subtle salty taste of the jamon. Crema Catalana (spanish style creme brulee): By this time, we were stuffed but couldn't pass on dessert! This was very delicous - not too sweet, very creamy and slightly nutty. A great way to end dinner. Overall, I'm very happy to have dined here and look forward to coming back to try more variety in the near future! Parking: Street parking only, recommend arriving early to find a spot Bathroom: Conveniently located in the center of the restaurant, 2 rooms. Great for Parties: We saw 3 large parties during our time there. This place can accommodate parties of 12-15 people from what I saw. I would call to make reservation for large parties in advance.

4.5 so rounding up to 5! It was a rainy night and we were looking for somewhere that was pup friendly with a covered patio area. We don't do tapas very often so we were sure what to get or how much to get but our server was super helpful! We ordered: - pan y Ali oli (house bread) - rabas (fried calamari) - zanahorias morunas (pickled carrots) - gambas al ajillo (shrimp in garlic) - champinones al ajillo (mushrooms in garlic) - patatas à la brava ( potatoes with "spicy" ali oli) - salmon relleno - crema catalana (Spanish creme brulee) - capricho helado (vanilla ice cream with strawberries and caramelized sugar) We really enjoyed this meal! Things came out pretty fast which was great because it seemed busy. My favorites of the tapas were the shrimp in garlic and the patatas à la brava. I loved the aioli sauce the potatoes were in. I would have like the calamari more if it had a sauce? It definitely was missing it and i found myself scraping the leftover patatas brava sauce. Our server did say he was gonna bring us sauce but it never came. Salmon relleno was pretty good - it's salmon stuffed seafood in a lobster bisque sauce. I wish this dish was... Hotter? Temperature wise, it was just warm. Their crème brûlée is really good and I would probably get that again but charging $10 for some ice cream and strawberries (the capricho helado) is kind of much.

Good service but overall disappointing. We had the gambas à la plancha and pretty sure they had been frozen as the skin was very hard to peel off. The paella was also meh and not crispy but rather soupy. The crema catalana was good and the sangria ok. Would not go back.

Every time i've been to Costa Brava, I am reminded of what always wish I go more often. A little gem on the east side of garnet, you would drive by it and almost miss it. But once you enter, you're transported into a huge authentic european style bar/restaurant fit with an outdoor patio as well. The service is fantastic and the ambiance is truly unmatched to anything you experience in SD. The dishes are all tapas style and easy to share. I'd recommend ordering a few dishes between two people because they can be small but they are well priced. The absolute star of the show is the potatoes - cheesy creamy crispy and delicious. The sangria is fresh and delicious too. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone!

San Diego's most famous Spanish Restaurant! I enjoyed my time at Costa Brava and would recommend it for the tapas! Parking Free parking on the street along Garnet if you're lucky. Service/Wait Time/Aesthetic I thought based on pictures that it was only an outdoor restaurant but they do have an indoor area! My group was seated with a reservation easily and the service was very good- the server was Spanish and he knew the menu very well and the food came out really quick! Food/Drinks They only have red sangria and it was good, definitely recommend a pitcher! There were so many tapas that our group ordered but the two I liked the most was the Bacon wrapped dates (Datiles con Tocino) and the oxtail (rabo de toro). They were both very savory and delicious! Tapas that I thought were just okay was the Spanish tortilla, shrimp in garlic, and patatas bravas. There's a creamy sauce on the patatas bravas that I did not really care for. Their paella was just okay- I thought it was expensive- about $30 per person and there was no crispy rice! I would recommend going to Costa Brava for a fun Spanish tapas time.

Very good food. Hugs Tapas menu. Tons of wine selections. Place was busy but we got all of our plates very quickly. Inside was nice, clean, and very fast and friendly service. The cod and chicken croquettes were excellent, so were the clams. Calamari was hot and fresh but a little salty. Overall everything was very good and we would go back.

EVERYTHING was amazing about this restaurant! Probably one of my top five restaurants in San Diego. The ambience was super chill and amazing. Our server, I forgot his name, but he's definitely from Spain... He was amazing! All his recommendations were great. We sat in the outdoor seating area with my service animal. They were so nice to her! The food was absolutely incredible! I'm definitely coming back here again. Oh and they're crème brûlée. Chef's kiss. I think I'm gonna come again tomorrow! I left this restaurant feeling so happy and my belly was so full. Honestly, can't wait to come back!

We were celebrating my grandpa for receiving a plaque at Mount Soledad this past weekend and decided to come to Costa Brava after the ceremony. The staff was so accommodating to take our large group without a reservation. It helped that it was shortly after they opened. Since it was late morning/early afternoon, I opted for some of the more brunch-ish tapas. I ordered the patatas a la brava and the tortilla española, which I loved! The portions were plenty and I was able to share with a few others near me. I surprisingly loved the chicken croquettes and anchovy stuffed olives. Everything tasted great and everyone enjoyed the time we had to celebrate!

Decided to a have a roommate dinner here and this was the perfect place to sit down, chat, and snack on a little bit of everything. The food all came out relatively fast and we were able to munch on the chicken croquette, marinated olives, bacon wrapped dates, and spicy potatoes. The star of the night was paella. Ours included shrimp, calamari, mussels, and clams. It also had chicken and chorizo as well. Definitely returning to try more since the menu was huge.

I studied abroad in Madrid and loveeee tapas. We came here for dinner, and almost missed it. We didn't see a sign with their name anywhere and had to ask the host is this the place, which was very strange. Not sure if it was too dark but we only knew it was the place because GPS & confirming with host. We ordered all my favs: patatas bravas, manchego cheese, olives, and croquettes. My boyfriend wanted to try the Spanish omlette, which I've never been a fan of but he didn't love it either - won't fault them just not our fav. We also got sangria, so yummy. Loved the rustic vibe. Our waiter was nice and energetic, but after ordering, he seemed disappointed we weren't getting more and didn't seem to give the same energy as the beginning which was kind of strange. Overall, nice place and good food though!

    What is parking like?

Do they have live music? I need my flamenco and Gipsy Kings vibe.

How do you get seated inside? I've come here a handful of times with a reservation and every time we walk past multiple open tables inside and get sat in the back patio area.

They get busy, I would call days in advance and reserve

Do they split the check if there is a large party of people?

    Is there parking nearby?

Street parking, but it's the luck of the draw. If you can walk or catch a ride service, you'll find it easier. On a weeknight (not Friday), it shouldn't be a challenge. However, Costa Brava is worth it!! All the best.

    When is Happy Hour?

Happy hour is Tuesday - Thursday 5 pm-6pm for 1/2 price Sangria and a selected menu of Tapas at 1/2 price. I believe this is only at the bar and the seats fill up quickly at happy hour.

What days of the week and what time do you have flamenco dance?

Are the owners and chefs Spanish?

While I didn't meet owner / chef I believe yes. The people serving us were definitely from Spain

    Casual attire OK?

    Definitely!

Does this place have live music?

They have flamenco dancing on Sunday not sure about live music. just call them.

What are the must gets at this place? There is so much good stuff to choose from!

My boyfriend and I always get Papas Bravas, everything is amazing! You really can't go wrong. The Ox, I believe is a good choice. Croquetas are some of my favorites along with the mushrooms.

I see that they have outdoor seating - does anyone know if they allow small dogs?

Yes they do, on their patio.

Do you have to sit at the bar for happy hour?

No- we have had happy hour on the front porch

Do they do brunch? Is there a menu we could see?

I'm pretty sure they don't do brunch. You can see their menu at their website www.costabravasd.com. I highly recommend this restaurant

I'm looking for a vegan friendly tapas restaurant, does this restaurant offer vegan options?

I don't think this is your place.

Would this place be suitable for a big party of about 40 people?

You'd probably have to rent the entire place for that. I'd suggest giving them a call.

Went there yesterday (Friday) at 5pm and sat at the bar for happy hour. My check came with full price. Asked them and they said no more happy hour?? What happened?

Our lovely hostess greeted us & escorted us downstairs to pick our table. There were no specific table reservations, but all seats are good, as it's a small venue. The Love Gods smiled upon us and granted a table close to the front with an awesome view of the stage. Perfect table for the perfect date! Starters set the tone. What's this? I would recommend reservations. I was able to secure a seat (due to showing for dinner around 4 pm or so), but the restaurant filled up nicely and hosted about 4 anniversary's and 1 birthday in my time there. Dress attire seemed casual but there is definitely a more elevated clientele so I would recommend a thoughtful outfit for the experience.

I literally felt like I was in a café in Madrid or Barcelona and enjoyed not only the familiar salty flavors that I've missed from Spain, but also the pure, rich, olive oil, and quiet ambiance as this is one block from the busiest part of Little Italy. My server, German, (his name) enjoyed helping me create the ideal light supper and allowed me to try a few Spanish wines (they have so many!). I settled on a Verdejo from Rueda. It was the right balance of fruit, acid, and slight floral to perfectly pair to my meal. I had the seasonal fish meuniere - white fish delicious and crispy on top (my favorite), garnished with capers and roe. It was accompanied with a tender lettuce and heirloom tomato salad with saffron dressing. The leftover dressing for the salad was the most amazing vinegar dip for a couple tater tots when I got home. The dressing was something I will go back for! Thank you, Barra Oliba for the perfect Spanish "girl dinner!" Can't wait to come back and try the Paella!

The night started off really well. The gentleman at the front greeted us, and we instantly connected since we're both from Guadalajara. It felt like the experience was going in a great direction. At the bar, things changed. The bartender was friendly toward me but not toward my Middle Eastern date, which made things uncomfortable. When taking our order, he stayed in the middle of the bar while opening a wine bottle instead of coming over, so we could hear him. When my date asked him to come closer, he seemed visibly annoyed. The food, though, was amazing--delicious and great quality. We'll give it another try, but next time we won't sit at the bar.

It was a place that I look forward to going again and again. Truly special especially how at the end of the night we got to witness the owner and the cooks share a meal together, sing, laugh and enjoy each others company as if it were in a villa somewhere in Italy. I absolutely recommend this place. Our experience there was fantastic!

Yes, I will be there next month with my whole gang celebrating with me on my special day! Our reservations were early, arriving on time @ 5:30 it was a bit quiet with only two other tables, but not for long. In no time every single table was filled. The restaurant was busy and the wine was a'flowin'! This quaint and very special restaurant reminds me of a small restaurant in San Diego in the 1980's, "Ciao Bella". It was located downtown on 4th Ave., it was also chef-owned. When you dine at a chef owned restaurant you are most likely destined for greatness, or a great meal! This is the case at Angela's Kitchen 'Carbon', because there is pure authenticity in her dishes and a whole lotta' love delivered in each plate. The subtle, warm decor is welcoming and the music is played at the perfect level. Just the right ambiance. Once seated, you'll be promptly greeted and the attentive wait staff will have your wine delivered pronto. What a selection they have. I started with the prosecco and moved on to the Sangiovese which complimented my pappardelle perfectly. My friend ordered the grilled salmon and had the Montepulciano Abate Pietro. The delivery of their fresh bread with garlicky pesto, and another with tomato, which I think was a focaccia. Just amazing. We asked for olive oil to compliment the bread: it was the very best of quality with a dark Sicilian olive green hue and the smoothness with the polyphenols and antioxidants dancing in my mouth. Yum! I asked for a side of Parmigiano and they brought a nice square ramekin full of finely grated cheese, Perfection!! These are the details that make me fall in love with a restaurant, causing me to return again and again. Both of our entrees were executed perfectly, the vegetables were grilled leaving a slight char, and the salmon was grilled just right leaving a tender center. My pappardelle was dressed in the deepest, richest mushroom + beef cheek fusion of flavors with whispers of some kind of red wine like maybe the Nero d'Avola that they feature on the menu. WoW!! This is a dish that you want to take your time savoring. Every bite surpassed the last, and then a sip of the Sangiovese and I was in fresh pasta heaven. Just when we were winding down and reeling from being overwhelmed by the amazing food, Angela came to our table with cannoli. It too was amazing! This was such a kind and unexpected gesture from the chef/owner. Grazie mille, a domani!

Stopped by after coming home from a work trip to get a late night meal and was so glad we did! Service was top notch! From the minute we walked up to the door to the dish recommendations, everything was so warm and welcoming. Drinks, both alcoholic and NA, were well-balanced and refreshing. Really opened our appetite to crush a bunch of fresh seafood ...speaking of... Wow. Just wow. Everything was so fresh and you could taste the ocean in each bite. - Oysters were freshly shucked and delicious without any of the add-on sauces/dressings - Carpaccio: not to say that it wasn't delicious. It's just that compared to everything else, this was just good. skippable tbh - Sardines on toast: another banger! such thick whole pieces that just melted away with each bite. yum. - Mussels (MVP app): wowwwww so good. Underrated. So glad our server recommended them. If I had to redo our meal, I'd have ordered 2 and skipped the carpaccio. MUST GET MUSSELS. - Beets were a refreshing change from the seafood. Open to other salads but def order one as a palette refresher from all the ocean - Octopus: perfectly cooked and not chewy at all - Potatoes: too heavy to end with. Not bad in any way but I'd skip this next time. Really only want a half bite. All in all, Mabel's smashed it and we'll be back 100%. Cheers, Mabel's!

Mabel's has been on my list for a while I just hadn't made it in yet. The soft, intimate lighting and lively crowd pulled me in like a moth to a very chic flame. The hostess was warm and welcoming, and since the place was buzzing, we opted for the makeshift patio seating prime people watching territory. Inside, I noticed the layout has two distinct rooms, with one acting as a waiting area where guests can mingle and sip a drink before being seated. A nice touch if you enjoy a little pre-dinner social hour. Somewhere between scanning the menu and spotting all the seafood options, dessert quietly exited the chat. We decided to lean into the moment and see what the hype was about. After a quick chat with our waiter, we went with the octopus skewer and grilled swordfish. Now, fun fact I completely missed: it's a gin bar. This realization came after I confidently ordered a dirty martini like I knew what I was doing so I pivoted and reordered a glass of wine. Smooth recovery... mostly. The octopus was nicely cooked tender with a good char and the swordfish was... fine. Not bad, just not something I'll be dreaming about at 2 a.m. Overall, the dishes were executed well, but flavor-wise, they could've used a little more personality. A pinch of salt might've gone a long way. That said, I know their menu changes frequently, so I'd absolutely come back and give it another shot. And next time, I might actually stick to my original plan... you know, dessert.
