We've been to this particular Costco gas station a number of times on our trips up and down the 101. Normally it's all good. Last visit, on Monday evening, 1/19/26, it wasn't the best experience. First, despite not being that crowded there were a few other drivers that don't seem to understand how to park their cars in such a way that others can move past them in the center lane. Two in particular didn't straighten out when they parked, so they were blocking the through lane and impeding others from getting to a tank. Okay, we waited that out, shaking our heads at the cluelessness. Everyone wants to be able to gas and go; getting back on the road. That was being adversely affected by a couple of drivers who didn't "get it". Finally, it was our turn. Upon the finish of the gassing up cycle, there was a weird popping sound when the automatic shutoff on the pump handle instead of stopping, it kept going. There was also a small leak in the hose which was dribbling extra gas onto our car. Thankfully, there was an attendant close by who hurried over and helped my husband get the handle under control. As it was, there was gas on the exterior of our car. It was startling, and not in a good way. It could have been a serious situation if fumes were accidentally ignited. My husband thankfully didn't get gas on his skin or clothes, but it was a close call. The attendant did apologize, but that was all. I would hope that pump would immediately be taken out of service. He was working on cleaning up the gas on the pavement as we were leaving the area. Scary stuff! When we turned on the ignition that cabin of the car smelled very pungently of gas. I suggested that we go nearby ASAP and get the car washed as we still had a two hours' drive to get home. This just served as a reminder that filling the car with gas isn't a routine activity to not take seriously. Being present mentally is something to really keep in mind. This isn't a situation one would normally imagine could happen at a Costco, but that's why they're called accidents when something goes wrong out of the blue. read more

Filling up the rental car in Santa Maria, California... I didn't do any research and didn't know about this Costco Station. Luckily, my travel partner, Niki S., knows the area. I told her that we should probably get some gasoline soon. Then, a few miles later, the gasoline indicator light went on... haha! I saw that we had about 30 more miles of driving left and 35 miles worth of gasoline left... LOL... we should make it, right? This Costco gas station is one of the bigger ones. The long lines are not so scary once you realize there are 3 pumps for each bay. They moved reasonably fast for us. While it is not fun filling up your tank these days, Costco is known for gas prices much lower than the big guys. And they have a secret (so I've heard) that their gas comes from the top of the line major suppliers. Good quality, great prices. Worth the membership cost. read more

Using the Costco membership charge card, price per gallon was $4.75 but stations in Lompoc were charging an average of $4.15 (HUH?). Yep, 60 cents per gallon HIGHER at fluffing Costco. Super busy gas station but the way Costco gas is set up makes getting through the lines fast and easy. The gas pumps are open before the store and it's much less crowded during these times. I hit the pumps on my way to work and can drive right up to empty gas pumps. read more

The food court line needs improvement just as well as the Call to order feature. What good is calling to place an order if when the line is still long, you finally get to the counter, and they tell you they don't have your name down. Located on the right side of the main entrance and it's own lane away from the busy entrance to come in & to go out made it easier to use this gas service. A few people may not notice the fact that there is pump availability status lights for each pump: the in-use (red light) and available (green light) status of each pump would help traffic congestion. Having been a Costco customer for many years, it was great when they added gas stations to their stores. With the gas prices these days, it helps with trying to find the best prices to fill-up your car. Costco is one of 42 retailers nationwide that sells fuel that is graded Top Tier. Yet, their gas is about $.20 to $70 gal less than their leading competitors. Since I was going on SoCal road trip, I had mapped out the Costco gas stations that I would need to stop to get gas. On my first leg of the trip heading south, I stopped at this Costco as Santa Maria. The gas station looked new with three islands and 24 pumps. However, there were no lines waiting to get gas, which I'm accustomed to seeing. The gas prices here were about $.65 gal more than what I had paid when filling up in Hayward several hours earlier. Can't imagine a non-Costco gas station was charging. I attribute the higher prices due to the Central Coast area and less gas stations as well.
