I've been going here for years. It's very convenient for me with them being in Costco. I've always had vision insurance but they didn't always accept that in the past but they do now so that's a big plus as we don't have to submit for reimbursement for that anymore. Just a two person operation but they're very efficient, scheduling is no problem, and a pleasure to do business with. I even tried that OPTOS scan this time (which wasn't covered by my insurance but I wanted to do it anyway as I was curious about it) and that was pretty cool. They'll take good care of you -and your eyes. read more

I just finished my 2024 appointment with Dr Tran and I am very confused. In 2023, I had a great experience: easy to book, easy but thorough exam, no problems, reasonable price. Today, in 2024, it was an entirely different experience, like I went to a training eye doctor intern. To start with, I could not book the appointment: the phone would ring and ring and no one would pick up, even though I was within normal hours. I FINALLY got someone on the phone 5 calls later. I mentioned to the receptionist that I would need my eyes fully dilated and booked at 12:30. Then I thought about it and called back, and asked hey, if I have my eyes dilated at 12:30 and you all go to lunch from 1-2, does that mean the doctor will make me sit around until 2 to check my dilated eyes (they take 30 minutes to fully dilate)? And she was like, oh yes, we'd better book you for 2pm. Isn't that her job to tell me? I felt it was very unprofessional to book someone an appointment where they'd have to wait an hour for your lunchbreak without telling them. At the actual appointment, the receptionists are confused and unorganized. They seem very new. They tell me I had a choice of getting my eye dilated or not, which I already told them I needed because the doctor herself last year told me to remember to ask for them dilated. They get Dr Tran involved and she's now going back on what she said last year. I reminded her that she told me to get them fully dilated, and she was like, "well, it's your choice." I asked if if was safer to have them fully dilated, and she said, 'yes," but again kept saying it was my choice and maybe I wouldn't want to... and I was so confused. You're the doctor! Tell me what I need to do! She took forever during the exam. She seemed unsure of herself. When the receptionist was finally instructed to take pictures of my dilated eyes, she did them all wrong and had to have the doctor come over and LITERALLY PRY MY EYELIDS OPEN to retake all the pictures. It was painful and uncomfortable, and very weird because we took these pictures last year and it was easy and fine! What has changed? I don't understand. She took forever to hook up a weird machine to the wall to shine a light in my eyes for the manual dilation. I've never seen a doctor do that before. My total exam was a whopping hour and 15 minutes. It truly felt like going to a low-cost training clinic. I don't know what changed, but I won't be going back. She also spotted a thinning of my retina in one of the scans (which would not have been noticed if I hadn't insisted on a full dilation which, again, she tried to weirdly talk me out of in spite of INSISTING on it last year) and was very unclear on whether or not I needed to get it taken care of. She just wouldn't say either way but kept saying over and over again if my retina detached, I should definitely go in to a specialist. OF COURSE I WOULD IMMEDIATELY SEE A DOCTOR IF MY RETINA DETACHED. Who wouldn't? She went over the symptoms of retinal detachment like five times, but wouldn't definitively tell me if I need my ACTUAL PROBLEM looked at. I felt very confused and like I had to coax the information I actually needed out of her the entire time. They've also MASSIVELY raised their prices, and it makes me angry to see a review from only 4 years ago say that her exam and dilation was only $100 when now mine cost $170. I only suffer through Costco's independent optometrists to get the discount on contacts and it's clearly not worth it. read more

I had a great experience at Costco Optical with Dr. Hanh Tran, and wish I had gone here sooner to give the ol' eyeballs a proper checkup. Sign Up Process: Calling in to make an appointment was straightforward: I called the number for Costco two days prior and connected via the extension for optometry dept. I asked the receptionist if there was availability for the day I wanted, and got booked without issue. Check In: The day of, I got to office a bit early (it's located right behind where the eyeglasses displays are) and checked in. The receptionist checked me in via a physical form, and I provided her my latest prescription of eyeglasses to create a record given it was my first time here. Initial Tests to Expect: The receptionist also guided me through the basic vision tests (follow the light and puff of air into the eyes,) then asked me if I wanted a retina scan. I opted in and she guided me through all the necessary steps to take an image. Eye Exam with Dr Tran: Meeting with Dr. Tran also went smoothly. I appreciated her calm, kind, and professional tone throughout. She checked my vision and patiently answered all of the many questions that I prepared after completing checks. Check Out & Cost: The total for everything (eye exam + retina scan) came out to $100. I paid with card and had my glasses prescription emailed to me along with the receipt and the photos of my retina. I wasn't hassled to shop for any glasses with Costco, which was also nice as I plan to buy from some online vendors I like. All in all, I thank Dr. Tran and her admin for a smooth eye exam process. I appreciate the great customer service from the receptionist and thoroughness of my exam from the doctor. I will definitely come back the next time I need an eye exam! Tips: 1. Schedule on a weekday if possible- it wasn't busy at all for me 2. Write down questions prior to your eye exam 3. Bring a copy of your current/latest prescription so the doctor can measure any changes to your vision 4. Dr. Tran is not only personable and professional, but also extremely thorough. I saw her for the first time today for a refraction visit, although my husband has been seen there before. Even though I had recently visited my regular Optometrist for a full evaluation, Dr. Tran made a point of repeating some of those evaluations in order to confirm the observations. She provided me with several helpful comments which will relate to future treatments, made sure that all of my questions were fully answered, and sent me on my way with a feeling of having been warmly well cared for. If you are in need of such services, I highly recommend her practice, and look forward to seeing her again next time my vision changes. read more

Dr. Tran was patient and very gentle. She took the retina scan by my request ( $30 ). The retina scan has center, up,down, right and left, total 5 scan for each eye. She patiently took the scans even sometime I blinked my eyes and needed to repeat the scan. She read the images carefully and showed me the minor sign of macular degeneration. She wrote down the nutrition supplement recommendation for slowing down my macular degeneration. I came in for single focus outdoor sport glasses and indoor progressive glasses. She patiently showed me the differences and made recommendations. I will definitely come back every year for my eye exam. read more

I made an appointment with Dr. Hahn Tran because I wanted a second opinion on my prescription that I got from another optometrist who was new to me. The prescription seemed very different from my previous prescriptions. The appointment was easy to make. On the day of, I filled out a simple form and did some initial tests with the technician. Then I saw Dr. Tran and explained why I was there. She took a look at my current prescription and past prescription. She explained that they were similar but one used minus and the other used plus. She said I don't need another exam and didn't charge me for the visit even though I went through the initial tests and she took time to explain the prescription. I had the worst experience with the front desk staff here. Had an appointment, came in. They asked me to wait to get checked in. After 10 minutes I'm told I don't have an appointment. Then I am told, we can squeeze you in after 45 minutes. Now I told them I had arranged for child care so I can't push it out further. So I waited at Costco for 30 minutes, go back in and they ask me to fill out the forms, do the initial eye checks and then ask me to wait "somewhere". I ask how much longer and they say at least 20 more minutes. I'm livid at this point and when I share feedback and I am met with this callous and indifferent attitude. At this point, I'm out. I didn't even meet the doctor. Not going to recommend because of terrible front desk staff. read more

The new optometrist at this Costco location (Ms. Hanh Tran O.D.) does not accept any insurance and her office associates may not tell the patient in time. My wife and I visited this location for an eye exam. We had made an appointment 2 weeks before and in person when we mentioned our vision insurance provider. On the appointment day, after the service was provided, we learned that the office does not accept an insurance policies. There is no sign in the office to inform patients about that. Also, they failed to tell us when we were making the appointment as we did we mention our insurance. I told them I would not have done my eye exam if I knew this, simply because I do not want to deal with the insurance company. They said they see a lot of patients with the same insurance provider as mine and they have "no problem" getting their money back from the insurance company. I filed a claim with my insurance, if it works out, I may reconsider my review. read more

The gentleman at the front desk I believe his name is Sebastian was very polite and professional even though he couldn't get my eye pressure completed( probably my fault because i kept jumping when the air blew into my eye) but he had a great attitude ! He gets 5 stars!! But now why I gave them one star. I was seen by a female doctor, I am not sure of her name but it was NOT doctor Tran. She was late, and one top of that she was rude. I have been wearing contacts/ glasses for 17 years and NEVER have I had someone like her. She mumbled, it was hard to hear anything she said. Did things I have NEVER had done to me before as far as testing. And I did not wear my contacts to the appointment because they never ask my for them I always remove them at the beginning of my appointment before check in starts so I just wore my glasses this time around. And she said she needed them I don't know for what. She forced me to change my contact brand because she didn't have the sample in stock to try ( she offered to order them but it wouldn't take a week and I was leaving on vacation but at this point I was so irritated be her and her unprofessional demeanor I wanted to leave) but I declined. She changed my contact brand and told me she matched the prescription closer to my glasses, which I told her I don't wear because I can't see well with them so I don't know why she even did that. She switched me from Biofinity 1 month to a two week disposable. I have been using biofinity for SEVERAL years and have had no problems with them but she told me I needed a breathable lense like the two week ones. I literally said I am fine with the ones I have. When I went to the Costco optical to ask about the lenses the woman there could tell I was not happy and asked me about it and I told her what happened. And she said it seemed like I wasn't convinced on my prescription the doctor gave me and she was right. she was super sweet and spoke to the front desk guy and told me they would talk to doctor Tran to fix my prescription I was given. I did let her know how rude and unprofessional she was at the end and told her I wouldn't be back because of her. She just had a pissy attitude since she walked in the door the seemed like she didn't like her job. She was also rough and almost like a smartass anytime I said something that contradicted what she was saying. Horrible experience and won't be back. read more

Pleasant first time experience! (She took over Dr. Manny Nguyen at the Costco in Mtn View and has similar vibes - easy going and direct). Dr. Tran was very sweet, patient, and nice. I went in for a regular contact lenses exam and everything was routine as usual. Appt started on time. Office was clean and orderly. I prefer going to optometrists at Costco - it's fast, speedy, and direct, especially if you needs are simple and straightforward, like renewing your prescription. The booking receptionist was rude and kept blocking phone numbers, so callers could not call back, if they get disconnected. Looks like they are not able to handle the business. My work offers eyecare insurance, but Costco optical exams and contact lenses are still much cheaper! Pros: -My optometrist Dr. Stephanie Kwan is fabulous! She takes her time and explains everything to me. It's always nice when doctors warn you when something "may be uncomfortable" before actually doing it. -Even without insurance, my contacts and exam were cheaper than other chain eyecare places. My contacts were $18.99 per box and exam was $89 I think. Cons: -Don't have any! Bottom line: Take advantage of your Costco membership! I loved my eye doctor, the front staff, and even the Costco optical staff. Everyone takes their time with you. The best part was when I was waiting for my eye drops to kick in, I walked around the store eating samples. Ha! read more

I don't have vision insurance at the moment, so going to Costco was definitely the most affordable option for me! I'm really glad I made an appointment because Dr. Nguyen was thorough, quick (whole appointment lasted no more than 25 min), and gave me more information and education about my eyes than any of my other optometrists. I should note that I've been wearing glasses + contacts since I was 12, so maybe it's was a simpler/quicker process for me. It's actually nice to come to a tiny little office and not have to wait vs all other optometry offices where I feel you wait forever and ever. Overall, I highly recommend visiting Dr. Nguyen! Just got back from getting my eyes checked with Dr. Manny Nguyen. Really great optometrist and he answered my questions and let me know of other situations that could happen given I'm on immune suppressants. I already knew about them but it was nice that he gave that information which made me realize he's informative and knows his stuff. He's very professional and approachable. I've also had Dr. Kwan in the past as well. Very nice and professional. You really can't go wrong with either optometrist at Costco (Mtn View site). The price of $54 (for an eye check for glasses) is a great price too. I *highly* recommend. read more

This is arguably the best part of this Costco. I have had my eyes checked here over the last 8 years and have always been scheduled and seen quickly. The doctor (always the same guy - I believe Dr. Nguyen but I'm bad with names) has been great, has taken his time, and did a much better job helping prescribe proper eyewear for my astigmatism - since then I find myself squinting much less! The front desk people seem to change from time to time, and some have been better than others, but I see no need to remove a star, I usually only see them for about 5 minutes. read more

For years, we have been taking our kids to Dr. Nguyen at Mountain View Costco optometry with great results! Unfortunately, when I tried to schedule our yearly (always insurance-covered) eye care/examination appointment, I was told that Dr. Nguyen had moved to San Jose and the new eye Dr., apparently named Dr. Tran, "doesn't accept any insurance." Can you imagine? This is rather like a modern hotel that doesn't accept credit cards, etc., only worse, since I had already pre-called my insurance co. who assured me that my kids were 100% covered for a new appointment. Please call them and confirm I am telling the truth if you can't believe it: 650-625-1681. You would think that since this new eye doctor is being allowed by the Costco corporation to have such an advantageous location, they would be at least customer-friendly enough to accept medical insurance--as all other Costco optometrists have done in the past. That this new one, a Dr. Tran?, so greedily has decided to use the COVID-situation as an excuse to refuse all insurance so he can make as much money and as fast as he can with the least possible amount of effort and work, is outrageous and unacceptable. Please join me in asking customerservice@costco.com to please reconsider this new money-grubbing eye doctor in their store and instead, find another OD who would be willing to accept insurance. read more

I recently had a appt with Dr. Nguyen and will never go back, much less ever recommend him to anyone. I have had previous eye exams with Dr. Manny Nguyen and have purchased glasses and contacts from his prescription through Costco. However, recently I had a very disconcerting appointment with him. I made an appt to come in b/c I thought I had one contact in an eye that I was having trouble removing. This has happened before and a shop that sells eyeglasses next door to where I work, was happy to locate it under an eyelid, and simply remove it. No problem. I was not one of their patients. However, when as a patient I went to see Dr. N - it was all of 2 minutes maybe - he said that there was no contact (must have rubbed it out) and he handed me a .1ounce sample of eye drops. Outside of his office, the receptionist told me that would be $25.00. I couldn't believe it. I found that so greedy, really unbelievable. I am not against someone making a living - but that is mercenary at best. Not only that, but as he was looking through his lens at my eyes - he would say sharply "look left" and immediately and aggressively snapped his fingers . This happened several times as he needed me to look up or right... Did he think I didn't speak English? His impatience and rudeness were completely unacceptable and inexcusable.. And I got to pay 25.00 for that treatment???? Also, when I told a Costco customer service representative upon leaving - he said that Costco does not conrol any practices or charges of their outside representatives. And in an aside, he said that he also has had trouble with getting a contact out and his optician at a Costco in Livermore, has checked his eye for free. read more

Dr. Nguyen is my fav! Saved me during a wedding emergency last year - I had irritated eyes and couldn't tolerate my contacts but it was a week too my wedding (where I was planning on wearing contacts!). For every day that week, Dr. Nguyen either saw me on the office or we talked on the phone to sort out what new pair I could wear. I think I tried about 7 new pairs of contacts! Let me start out by saying I'm an optician nightmare! I've had two surgeries for strabismus, RK, Lasik (-13.0 diopters!), Cataract lens replacement and astigmatism. I insist on wearing contacts since I'm active in sports. Throw in the fact that I'm now over 50 and need readers... OMG. Over the years, I've seen both Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Kwan and they are both wonderful. They are very knowledgable, efficient and treat their patients with care and respect. I thought I'd need to go to a highly paid specialist to get a proper fit, but I was wrong. These guys see a lot a patients daily, so I think that keeps them current. Highly recommended. read more

Beware when bringing your young ones here. We brought our daughter to Manny Nguyen last year (when she was 5) and again recently (at age 6), and she never really liked wearing the glasses he prescribed. But he explained it away as kids not liking to wear stuff, and also that "eyes need time to adjust" to wearing glasses. For this whole year, we carried on like this - forcing our girl to wear those glasses she hated wearing, because Manny was sure it wasn't the problem of the prescription. And all this time, teachers would tell us she was not looking at what was being taught. Just a couple of weeks ago, her newest teacher again made this comment, and also noted she seems to be trying to look at papers in front of her with glasses taken off. But the strange part was that she was wearing Manny's newest prescription for her from just a couple weeks before we had this latest discussion with the teacher. This clued us that a new eye exam from someone who really knows what they were doing would be in order. We took her to a pediatric eye specialist at PAMF, and we found out Manny's prescription was quite a bit off. The worst part, however, was that Manny insisted she was far sighted, and in actuality she is near sighted! He totally messed up the sign of the "spherical", and we have been putting our daughter through a whole year of unresolved sight issues. I brought this to Manny's attention and he was adamant that he got it right, and tried to intimidate me by telling me I just didn't understand optometry. Well, proof is in the pudding..... Today we got her new glasses, with PAMF presciption, and the first thing she exclaimed was "Oooo! I can see so clearly!" So there you have it, Manny was wrong (twice!...this year as well as last!), uninterested and unhelpful in correcting the issue, and our daughter suffered all this time. This has really impacted her learning, and no one can give our daughter back the time that she was struggling in class as a result of her vision problems. I don't know how it is possible for optometrists to get it so wrong, but all I can say is BEWARE! read more

Dr Nguyen is always in a rush and doesn't take time to listen. He's neglectful. For 2 years I complained about itchy eyes and discharge. He kept saying it was allergies but finally I got a second opinion and found out I had GPC and because of the delayed diagnosis and treatment, can't wear contacts anymore. If only he had been thorough and inspected my eyelids. read more

I have a complicated prescription and she was patient and worked though it with me over 3 months to get the right glasses and also contact lenses for modified monovision. The very best! Dr. Nguyen literally saved my life! I went in for a routine contact lens prescription refill and he did a thorough exam. In so doing, he found evidence of something requiring further examination by a specialist. Dr. Nguyen made an immediate written referral directly to a specialist (in my network) who has since diagnosed me with a serious condition. Dr. Nguyen has a great, easy-going style and is extremely efficient, clean and thoughtful. His staff is also helpful and efficient. Convenience was what initially drew me in, but the level of care, competence and service is what kept me coming back for over four years. Now I have confirmed that convenience and value does not, when it comes to Dr. Nguyen, compromise the level of excellent care I receive time and time again. I am so fortunate and grateful to have him as my optometrist! The specialists I've since seen are very impressed with Dr. Nguyen's actions and care.
