When my mom was returning home after a debilitating stroke, we decided to bite the bullet and go with Alvita - which was more expensive than others but long calls with their rep assured me my mom would be in amazing hands and I'd be able to rest easy and enjoy "being a daughter again." The *best* of the three aides they sent was notably cold upon meeting her, and one whom my mom told me would literally snap and curse loudly when lifting her in the hoyer and doing her duties, making her feel like a burden and making her feel on eggshells in her own home. After that, it became a full nightmare. On the morning of a doctor appointment, where the aide was asked to have mom ready to go for her wheelchair transport, the aide literally left in the middle of changing mom - without any reason, warning or notice. I thought she was taking out garbage but she genuinely just ghosted. As a result, mom missed an important appointment with her oncologist while laying there undressed and helpless. That wasn't even the worst. The final aide, who didn't last long due to her cat phobia (side note, when reaching out to Alvita, their solution: maybe just get rid of the cats), we learned had been putting dirty, soiled/food-filled pots and pans away in mom's cupboards. As a result, the aide who took over discovered maggots everywhere and we had to replace a ton of mom's cookware. (I would share a photo if it wasn't so gross.) The recklessness and negligence of this company and its hiring decisions is unreal. Thankfully my mom had me to advocate and look out for her through all of this, but it's terrifying to think about folks without a support system who are on their own in the hands of people like these and sharing their homes with them. I highly recommend directing your loved ones anywhere else. Or making sure you check in frequently on the welfare of anyone you already happen to have in Alvita's system.

The caregiver constantly manipulates the family against each other in order to get his way. Every time I try to replace him the agency interferes and ignores my requests even though I am the one hired them and I am the one who pays the caregiver who I dislike immensely. I should not have to be a situation where I am forced to keep a caregiver that I dislike. They don't return my phone calls and they ignore my requests to get a different caregiver. Instead of working with me to replace this caregiver who has created an extremely toxic environment, the agency will go behind my back and reach out to another family member who has very little to do with the caregiving, is easily manipulated and it results in arguments about replacing the caregiver. I don't want a caregiver who is only in it for the money and who does not have patients wellbeing in mind. I constantly have to step in and make sure the patient is being cared for. I should be allowed to replace a caregiver that I have no trust in. The caregiver should not be in charge and the agency should not be in charge. Thay have made a difficult situation even more difficult by pitting family members against each other. I dislike them immensely. Be careful

I was told to administer 8 drops of Opium each bowel movement to control his diarrhea. I will revise the letter to the VNS hospice Doctor. The original is as follows: Charles Mihalakelis Hospice Care October to November 2008: Dear Dr. Elin Kropp, I am writing this letter to formally document a profound injustice that occurred under your care approximately eighteen years ago regarding my father, Charles Mihalakelis, a World War II veteran, while he was a patient with the New York VNS Hospice at his home in Astoria, NY. For nearly two decades, I have carried the historical record of what occurred, and I am writing today to ensure that the facts are placed permanently in your possession. In 2008, when my father appeared in remission from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and was suffering from C. diff and a bed sore, you verbally instructed me to administer 8 drops of opium after every single bowel movement. You provided an ungraduated dropper with no dosage markings, giving instructions that led directly to severe over-medication. Relying entirely on your professional medical authority, I followed those orders, resulting in my father losing his ability to interact, spending his final days completely lethargic. His gregarious presence and furry touch will calm even the most stressed mind while giving him a good petting will lower blood pressure (I read the blood pressure thing in a CNN article, so it must be true!). He is the perfect assistant for helping his human caregiver colleagues form a stronger connection with their patients. Besides my rave reviews for their therapy dog, I am very impressed with Renewal Care overall. They are the first long-term care services organization in NYC dedicated to the LGBT community. That means they are especially sensitive to employing care partners who embrace each client's diversity. Heck, a good number of the employees are part of the same community, so they definitely can relate! Being somewhat of a Zen practitioner myself, I am also very intrigued by their innovative mindfulness practices approach to working with people with dementia and Alzheimer's. She wouldn't give me her name, she didnt have any sort of professionalism and left me at a loss on how to initiate the conversation that involves me handing them my hard earned dollars. when i asked her what steps i could take to move forward with evergreen choice after an incredibly unfriendly silence she literally said "if you're looking for a job you can go to our website" talking to that woman was like the textbook example of how not to make a sale. When the owner, Ann, called she was just as unfriendly as the nameless entity that represents her business. Ann told me, quite rudely, after i laid out that i wanted someone to come to my grandmothers home 3 days a week for 4 hours a day, That the time i needed someone to watch my grandmother was not worth it to the caretakers and if i couldnt bump the time up to at least 6 hours a day no one would take the job and it would be a 'revolving door of caretakers'. I understand what she was saying, but she reduced my elderly grandmother, that i care deeply about, to a job and a job that isnt worth it to the people she chose to surround herself with and represent her brand. I cannot figure out how am i supposed to trust Ann enough to have someone she chose watch my grandmother, largely unsupervised, when she cant even get it together enough to sound slightly kind at all over the phone. Speaking to her offended me, made me feel like i was imposing on her, and also like my grandmother was too burdensome for Ms. Ann without a larger payout. Not feelings that made my heart smile about handing thousands of dollars to her. If Evergreen choice's over the phone service is so unfriendly and brusque i cant imagine their caretakers are much kinder. Not the sort of people i would want looking after my freaking grandmother. Whatever entity on behalf of evergreen choice answered their phone needs to be retrained and Ann needs to take a hard look at her branding strategy. The way to get people to pay you is NOT to tell them that the person they care about isnt worth it or lucrative enough for you. Meanie.
