Some of the stories parents pass around were terrifying. My little one is just finishing the first trimester of his first year of middle school. And his experience has been amazing. He loves his curriculum, his teachers and his friends. The staff…read morehas gone downhill, the front office does nothing to address bullying or serious issues, and instead seems to spend more time gossiping or sitting on their phones than helping students and families. Bullying is ignored, and even when parents go to the school to try to resolve problems, nothing is done. In fact, situations often get turned around unfairly, with the wrong kids punished while others are protected. It feels like the administration shows favoritism, doesn't listen to all sides, and allows certain students (and their parents) to manipulate situations. The vice principal and office staff have been especially unprofessional and dismissive. Concerns about harassment, threats, and even parents from other families causing problems outside of school grounds were brushed off with "we can't do anything about it." That is unacceptable for a school that is supposed to be protecting and supporting kids. Teachers aren't much better, they rarely seem to keep watch in the classrooms, and they don't communicate with parents about issues students are facing. I was told after the fact that there were ongoing problems, but not once did I receive a phone call during the entire school year. This school does not create a safe, supportive, or fair environment. Instead of building up the community and helping kids grow, they dismiss problems, play favorites, and make situations worse. Families deserve a school that truly cares about all students and sadly, this is not one of them.

Keep in mind there were children present and a mom was walking into the daycare witnessing her horrible behavior. I told her I was moving my car and that her behavior was unnecessary. Just think... If this is how she is speaking to a complete stranger about a parking spot, how is she speaking to your children? Never, ever, will I send my children there or recommend it. I couldn't believe what my oldest learned. He was the first in his K class to count to 100 and he was able to add, subtract, and multiply by the time he was in K. Our youngest has really come a long way verbally since attending preschool. Most important is the community and friendships that they have made. My oldest son's two best friends are friends that he met 3-4 years ago from preschool. Some of the families have become like second families to us while we don't see others as often it's still so fun to see each other at sporting events or out and about. I won't say that the transition to public school was smooth for my oldest son because he just wanted to go back to preschool. But I really don't see that as a bad thing. When I had questions about education for my eldest Lynn gave me the most helpful assessment of my son's educational needs that I've ever received. So while it's only a year or two of my kids life it really feels like it has had a lasting positive ripple effect and I'm so glad my kids have this important opportunity to be little.

One benefit I particularly treasure is the opportunity for leadership my son is experiencing as a Montessori mentor. As the caboose to our family, it struck me that this is his big opportunity to be the oldest among his peers. As I see the pictures and videos the school provides daily, chat casually with the teachers at pickup, and observe in our home life, I am seeing my "baby" grow into a confident, thoughtful boy who can apply reason and empathy, modulate his responses, and make good choices in his daily life. Even though he's eligible for Kindergarten (and I am a big supporter of the WPUSD elementary he will attend next year), I keep him here for the low teacher/student ratio, the peacefulness and productivity of his work day, the laughter, fun, and joy that is so clearly enjoyed by the children and the teachers, and the warmth, love, and kindness that welcomes in the families in the mornings and tells them goodnight at the close of day. I attended their open house to see if the school would be a good fit for my son. We entered through the back gate and from the start I noticed I was being looked over. I figured it was because I looked somewhat sloppy carrying my infant in the carrier and haven't had the chance to change in order to make it on time. I was wrong. This was during the pandemic when masks were required indoors. All parents arrived with masks, but upon seeing the staff not wearing them, they also removed them. I attended with my toddler and infant who cannot be vaccinated, so we were also wearing masks and we did not remove them. Quickly, we became the only people wearing masks. When I asked if masks would be worn indoors, I was told no. Again, this was during a time when wearing masks was the safety guidance. I told the staff that I wasn't sure this would be the best fit, and she told me there were plenty of other preschools for my child. That's it. In no more than five minutes, I was bullied, made to feel uncomfortable, and told to leave. I left fuming. I could not believe she would 1. violate safety guidelines. 2. jeopardize the safety of my children. 3. tell me to go somewhere else rather than explain her reasoning. Also, this was done in plain view of other parents quickly setting the tone for the rest of the tour and establishing the type of treatment that is acceptable at this school. Obviously, I left. Looking back, she did me a favor as this is not the kind of environment I would want for my child. I have no doubt that what other parents have said in their posts is honest as the bullying behavior by the staff was in plain view with me. I am left feeling sad about what children are learning at this school about the treatment of others, and about their role in a community. This school is a detriment to all of Lincoln.
