Cottage Industry appeared in an SFGate article of their 40 favorite stores in San Francisco. It's not a large place, but stuffed with an eclectic, yet clearly deliberate selection of art, antiques, and other retail items that span the two. Honestly, the best strategy here is to look at the pictures posted on Yelp, to get the best idea. The most anachronistic items were the African antiques, including a chair (pictured), a "Cameroon throne" for a cool quarter million. In the midst of the African items was a Buddhist statue, presumably because it was a similar color. I didn't ask (should have) but I assume the provenence for all the items is airtight. The keychains are cute and I'm no stranger to being delicate with my keychain-- I have a ton of delicate items on it-- that's why not only was I absolutely shocked when the cashier rang my total up as $55 for this cheaply made chain that I could have made at Hobby Lobby for $10, but I found myself incredibly frustrated when my keychain broke off not even a week later. I wish I had listened to my intuition and asked her to put it back once she told me that the plastic clip alone was $18 . Customer service was also not great-- my friend and I had laid out our charms in the exact order that we wanted them put on our keychains and the woman helping us just disregarded it and put it them on in whatever order she wanted to. Unfortunately this is the best photo I have of it-- taken on the day I got it-- it broke off somewhere in sf 4 days later. Also, for $55, I'd expect to be able to have a decent keychain. I was told by the sales rep on my way out not to even let it get wet... are you serious? Complete waste of money and they don't do refunds. read more

This is an amazing find. I was walking along Fillmore street and saw a vibrant widow display. I looked through the window and saw so many unusual and colorful items. There was a necklace I was interested in so I went inside. The store is amazingly picturesque that I was in awe. The chandeliers were plentiful and seems to be one of a kind. As I walked through the store, I saw items from Italy, Africa, local artists, and other exotic places. The necklace I saw in the window was custom made. The sell beads and will teach you how to make/design jewelry. The owner (originally from Venice, Italy) and daughter welcome me with open arms and made me comfortable even though I did not purchase anything. They were friendly, courteous and patient. My friend posted a cute charm bracelet she made here so I also wanted to check it out and I was shocked because the prices were way higher than I thought they were going to be. We ended up getting 8 charms, for $40 and didn't even buy any of the bracelet chain or the circles that would connect the charm to the bracelet. The bracelet chains ranged from $40-$80 for one based on the size of the rings as well as the metal. There was such variety with the charms, but spread across multiple stations so I thought that there would be more at every different station. Today We go to Small Claims court, because Cottage industry would not return Chandelier that was crocked, bent and had a broken piece of glass. He knew it was damaged and he would not return it. He was found Guilty by his financial Institution. Now he taking me to small claims to return his chandelier. He was found guilty of fraudulent business practices. I really like to look around furniture store, accessories , gift shop or spiritual store. And cottage industry is one of my future goal. If I am rich and have time to travel around the world I would like to have a store like this to sell my collections or just for showing off. The shop is full of fun and delicates stuffs so if you are carrying a backpack you better leave it at the counter because you don't want to break anything. I wasn't planning to buy home deco or accessories. So me and my friend was just walking around and chill. But the clerk Hillary was very friendly. We stayed after the shop business hour but he wasn't trying to rush us. He introduced items background to us and was being very patient and helpful. My favorite part of their collections are chandeliers. My boyfriend's favorite is Indian god statues. Unlike there are lots of fake spiritual store on Haight couldn't recognize Shiva and even argued with us Shiva suppose to be blue and the statue was silver so it's not Shiva (duh) They can tell who is Shiva and they have more gods other than just Shiva as well. When I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly young sales associate who help me purchase almost all of my Christmas gifts in one single go. Instead of buying my family the mass produced garbage we all usually give and receive during the holidays, I went with impeccably handmade gifts from the store. The sales associate helped me pick out charms and a charm bracelet for my niece, who had mentioned this type of bracelet going viral in a TikTok video she saw. The charms were high quality enamel, and it was a fun process to put the thing together, I also got hand painted ceramic mugs and a beautiful chandelier made of Venetian glass for my new apartment and a vintage leather jacket for my difficult to buy for brother. It's rare in today's shopping world that you can say weeks after your visit to a store that you did not make a single purchase you regret, or have any qualms about the business you chose to support. I never leave bad reviews but i am frustrated. I saw this place on tiktok and thought it was super cute so i decided to go and make a bracelet. The pricing was a little misleading and i didn't realize it was going to be $80 until i had already spent over an hour finding the charms and putting it together (having them put it together for you was an extra $40). I wouldn't be upset about the price, but it is such bad quality jewelry.. 1st it basically started to tarnish after 1 wear AND i coated it in clear nail polish to try to prolong the gold plating. 2nd the little lever that opens the clasp to put the bracelet on broke off after a week. 3rd the charms started falling off which I admit could be from how put them on, but 4th when i tried to reattach the charm the chain itself broke!! And he refused. So I Then presented my case to my Visa card. And they found him guilty and refunded me my money. I dropped the small claims court case because my visa reimbursed me. Now after a year he has filed a small claims court against me because I have not returned his chandelier. Discriminating against me. And I am under no obligation to return the chandelier. This little shop on the upscale Fillmore corridor in Pacific Heights is like the Treasure Hunter meets Garage Sale Annie. Never has the word "eclectic", that passé word of the 90's, been so apropos here in the Teens. We could invoke the current trendy word, Artisanal, and it would fit because the ART IS ANAL here, seeing how they are packed to the gills with eclectic artifacts like Hitler hiding treasures from the Monument Men. Whether the ANAL is rooted in your base chakra, or in some obscure African fertility icon, it is here in some shape, form, or texture. African idols, dolls, spirit carvings? Check! Ornate Italian crystal chandeliers? Check! Metal Siamese buddha statuettes? Check! The owner has been traveling the world since they were 16, and must have shipped everything they could grab their hands on from the local cultures back into this store. So after almost 3 decades, you can find fascinating nick nacks, bric-a-brac, souvenirs (not yours, theirs) of all sorts. The merchandising and display ambiance is lacking, but only because this place would make a pack rat claustrophobic. But it is NOT for you Bargain Betty types. Nosiree Bob! Some items in here (actually many) are in the hundreds, nay, thousands. Not sure if you can bargain like a new immigrant at a garage sale and haggle the price down, but maybe the old chip-the-item-when-nobody's-looking-and-say-it-is-damaged trick works here like at the garage sales? I don't think it does, because the owner pays others to work here. They get paid by the hour, not by negotiating the profit made on obscure but vaguely familiar, absconded artifacts from Djibouti, Myanmar and Piemonte.
