Been holding off on reviewing because I selfishly don't want to blow up a great spot, but it's time. Kristina at Cotter gives one of the best cuts in the city, hands down. After going to every shop in Greenpoint about 3 or 4 years ago with only a portfolio of wack cuts to show for it, I found Cotter and have never looked back. Both locations are solid, although admittedly the booking interface is different and a little weird for both. Still, have had cuts from barbers at both and were all waaay beyond the local competition. That said, Kristina is my first choice and will stay that way until the ocean reclaims Brooklyn. Good with scissors and clippers, understands hair texture and face shape, and a chill, calming presence behind the chair. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

My 4 year old son gets his haircut from Jay. He is such a patient, gentle and skilled barber. We have seen him previously at the Manhattan Ave location but followed him to the Graham Ave location. The shop is clean, the front desk staff is kind and lovely. I love their texting feature to confirm appointments and to let you know if your barber is running behind. They serve coffee as well. Always clean. Classic and trendy feel. It is just a bit pricey compared to some other spots in North Brooklyn. I personally give my guy Jay 5 stars. He's the only barber I know that has managed to handle the cow lick on the back left side of my head and leave it manageable with how straight my hair is. For years I had to wake up and pomade and hairspray the crap out of it to get it to stay in control and Jay kills it every time and it grows consistent so I can manage it. I'm getting a 5 star cut from my guy, but it's not your bargain corner barber. Worth it for me. read more

Pre-pandemic I was strolling around in Greenpoint and saw a coffee shop that was also a barbershop. In need of a haircut and a cup of joe I figured "eh why not?" I generally think Cotter Barber, while a bit on the higher end price-wise, gives a good A+++ quality cut. Mid-pandemic I checked out the Graham location. It was equally tight. The barber shop is super clean and very nice. $35 for a kids haircut is a little bit steep but Mr. Blue eyes did an excellent job and was very good with my little boy blue. UPDATE: I do very much appreciate when a business is happy to take constructive feedback. I spoke with the manager here and they were interested to discuss my feedback and offered to make some changes to address my three points below. We'll see how this transpires, but I think it deserves an increase to 4 stars at this point. I've been here twice. There are a lot of things I love about this place and some things that can be tweaked easily to really win. The good: The staff are clearly amazing at the service they provide. Both times I have come out of here with a haircut I really love. The quality of the staff expertise and the products they use is top notch. I even purchased some shampoo because it was ohh so good. The non barber staff are also very polite and very helpful. The chairs, equipment, tools, wall art, etc are really snazzy and look great. The price is a top end price, but I am ok with this since the quality of the product is top end. What needs improvement: Both times I've been here, it has felt like I needed to ask for a favor for the complete set of services I'm paying for to be completed. In particular, both times I've had to ask for a shampoo and I almost feel bad asking, but if I didn't I wouldn't have received the shampoo that I'm paying for... The hair washing sink is wayyyy too tight. Maybe that is why the barber didnt remember to ask me about it... it must be uncomfortable for them to work in that tight space. It is uncomfortable for me to sit there as well. This barber shop also has a coffee maker and iced coffee inside the shop. I assumed that a coffee would clearly be included in the price of my haircut. The first time I was in here, I was gifted a coffee. But this last time, I was informed that actually coffee isn't included. It seems a bit cheap not to include a coffee with a $70 service. Overall, I recommend a few things: 1 - a reminder to the staff about what is included in each service so the customer can relax and not worry about an awkward conversation (or just forgetting about included services) 2 - fix the hair wash station... it needs a redesign 3 - Provide a standard coffee product if you get any $50+ service (for reference, barber room 306 down 2 blocks will happily offer you 3 shots of whiskey) Looking forward to this place as it improves over time. Recently moving into the area, I am so fortunate to have stumbled across Cotter. Serving multiple needs, I am able to sip on an oat milk latte while my boyfriend gets his biweekly hair cut. This chic and trendy spot is well worth the price. Christian, my boyfriends new go to barber is able to cater to the intricate needs of my boyfriends hair cut. His fade always comes out impeccable each time and he's developed a relationship with Christian who gave him advice on changing the hair cut up that he's been adhering to ever since. I've been having a great experience with Joe who did a great job with my hair today and several times now. He is great at what he does and easy to work with, not only does he make recommendations when I'm in doubt but listens to me when I ask for something specific. Overall this shop is accommodating and is always a welcoming, stylish and professional (but casual) environment. Would recommend getting a haircut here. Try a few barbers, everyone provides a different experience and it might be a few haircuts before you vibe with one in particular. They always got good tunes going too. read more

Awesome spot - needed a new location post-pandemic, and this place takes great care of you. Ryan is the man - detail-oriented, asks great questions, and adds all of the details that make getting your haircut hear a great experience. I always manage to get an appointment at the most convenient times for me, and the cut/beard treatments are 5-star. Ryan in particular does an excellent job, extremely detail-oriented, cool but friendly, I immediately found myself feeling comfortable in his chair, and appreciated that he shares his honest perspective on what would look best on me (I dislike coming in knowing precisely what I want and value the honest insights of the professional barber). I began going to Cotter Barber in August 2021. I was looking for a new barber. When I saw the shop and met the barbers I knew I found what I was looking for. They also have a great coffee shop inside if you want to sip while you wait. Ryan is my barber and he's amazing. He's professional, personable, and truly a skilled barber. He's attentive and listens to his clients. In the past year I've had 4 different haircuts and they all were great. I'm a woman so it's important for me to have a barber that softly shapes my hairline. He does that every time. Ryan also cuts hair pretty quickly but with precision. The other barbers there are true professionals as well and do great work. The staff as a whole will make you feel comfortable upon entry. This place is a gem of a barbershop in East Williamsburg. It's their second location and just opened this past Saturday. The space is beautiful and a really comfortable place to get your hair cut. It has a great old-school barbershop feel with the just right amount of modern touches. Fits absolutely perfectly into the neighborhood. There's a great coffee bar in the barbershop and the nitro cold brew was exactly what I needed today. My barber was Ryan Davis and he was incredible. It was the best haircut and beard trim I've ever had. Definitely ask for him if you're getting your haircut, though I'm sure you can't go wrong with anyone there. My hair is wavy to curly and usually difficult to deal with, but he handled it with ease. When choosing how to cut your hair they'll work with what you want, making subtle suggestions to take the haircut to the next level. I don't do review often, but I had an awesome time here! I've had only three hairstylists for the past 7 years basically, and my current stylist just moved last month so I definitely was worried. I take pride in my hair, and have been getting incredible cuts from people who are familiar with my style / know me personally for years. I got a recommendation from a good friend that Christian was THE man to go to at this spot. He did not disappoint!! The space is aesthetically on point, coffee (that they roast themselves) or water served, everyone has style, and the energy is good. I'm a relatively tough client, but Christian was able to talk me through what he wanted to do with my hair, and wasn't hesitant to suggest styling tips. He was confident, great conversation, and direct!! His fade is AMAZING, and from a technical perspective he got the job done well. I walked out feeling fabulous, have gotten a bunch of compliments on my cut, and absolutely recommend him to anyone.
