1st night in Glasgow, just landed a few hours prior before stepping out for the night, and the 1st stop of the night we headed to Cottier's, it used to be church and now it's been turned into a theater, bar, wedding venue and restaurant. Of course we were in the bar. I really can' t testify to the drinks or food, I needed a pick me up and I can tell you Cottiers makes a great cup of espresso! In fact I had 2 and before you knew it I was ready to go paint the town red! Loved the building and the look, the bar had plenty of seating, and you can tell during the day light hours its family friendly, had plenty of high chairs. Also had a nice cozy fireplace with a few logs going too. It was great place to stop at to start my 1st night in Glasgow! read more

Cottiers wins a lot of points for being beautiful. Beautiful building, beautiful bar with a beautiful fireplace, beautiful beer garden for when the fireplace isn't needed, beautiful theatre. Beautiful. It's an old church building that's been converted and it's nestled away in a nice leafy green part of Hyndland. The theatre is especially impressive. The space is huge and it has its own dedicated bar. There's stained glass windows all over the place including an impressive one directly above the stage and there are balconies above (although last time I tried to access them I was told they were getting renovated so I'm not sure if they're open yet). The beer garden is pretty great too on those rare sunny days. It fills up quick, but so do all beer gardens in Glasgow and this one has the advantage of being a proper beer garden rather than just a concrete yard with some chairs in it (not looking at any place in particular). If you can get a spot here to catch the sun over your lunch that you're in luck. The main bar area is cosy and comfy and serves a pretty decent selection of beers and wines as well as everything else you'd expect. The food menu is good too, nothing overly special just classic pub food done really well, sometimes with an interesting twist. So far I've never been disapointed. The only thing that puts me off? The prices. I mean, yes it's Hyndland and you get what you pay for. Technically, the prices are fair for what you get but that doesn't mean they're always affordable. If I want to sit in one of Glasgow's nicest beer gardens I'm happy to pay the premium but if I'm just after a pub for a quick pint then there are other options close by. read more

Another great Glasgow Pub! An old church that has been converted and features event space, a internal bar, a restaurant and space outside for a beer Garden. I have not been loads of times, but when I do go I love it. I mean what is not to like!? The best thing I can probably do is summarise my last visit and you will probably want to go yourself right now. The sun was blazing and we took #RogueTheRidgeback for a pint. We sat in the beer garden which we shared with loads of people who were attending a wedding in the event space so they were dressed up fancy and there was a good buzzy atmosphere going on.(This was on a Monday night as well!) There was even a wee cool French bulldog sat in the corner for Rogue to stare at. Everyone happy. (This place is very dig friendly) Drinks were superb. I got to try 3 different IPA's that I never tried before and one which was flavoured with green tea tasted brilliant. Snack wise we got fries, onion rings and calamari to share and it all tasted lovely. Nothing to fancy just top notch pub grub - check out the pictures! You might be able to tell by now that I am a fan. I will be back soon. read more

Note - I'm only reviewing the bar here, not the upstairs restaurant or the theatre. We used to come to Cottier's regularly for Sunday brunch, but stopped when it was discovered by the West End Young Mum's brigade and started turning into a crèche at lunchtimes - it was just too busy and I'm not a fan of having sprogs in pubs at all. The bar has a reasonable selection of real ales and the coffee isn't bad. Although I haven't eaten there for a while now, the bar food was always good with some nice veggie options. No complaints on that score. The main reason we don't go there now - and the reason I'm only giving it 2 stars - is the noise level. The bar is a big high-ceilinged rectangular room with shiny walls and ceiling, and the acoustic is simply appalling. You cannot have a decent conversation without shouting, which of course just exacerbates the problem. They could really do with hang some tapestries or soft curtains on the walls, or maybe even fabric banners from the ceiling to soak up some of the stray sound and make it bearable. What saves the place in the summer months is the outside seating area, which is perfect on a sunny day. They often have barbecues out here too, and on a warm summer's evening it's easy to convince yourself that you are at a much lower latitude than Glasgow. read more

Stereotypically west end, with expensive drinks, live jazz and people with beards, Cottiers is a pleasant enough place to while away an afternoon or evening. During summer the outdoors beer garden is very popular and has a barbeque which does good burgers. I've never eaten in the restaurant but saw a good comedy gig here a while back in the adjoining theatre, which has a range of shows and gigs on regularly. In a very nice part of town so also completely bereft of neds, Cottiers is well worth a visit. read more

Didn't know what to expect to attend a wedding here. Coming up to the place in a taxi - whoa it's an old church! I find these converted theatres quite cool as they've used the place really well. The bar and restaurant area was really cool and it was the perfect sunny day to relax in the beer garden. There was a good selection of drinks and overall the food was good. Would've loved to try the Sunday roast as it looked amazing! The outside BBQ also looked quite good. If I'm back in Glasgow, id definitely like to come back and see other places in the West End. read more

The first time I went to Cottier's was for a wedding reception. Talk about the wow factor. It was in the evening and the sun played beautifully with the stained glass windows. A small stage was set up at the opposite end to the bar for the band and there was loads of room to dance in front of the tables and chairs set out for guests. The next couple of times was for the Cottier's Chamber Project and their Dance Project. If you feel old theatres are stuffy but you fancy trying some bit sized classical music or contemporary dance then look out for next year's programme. They continue to push the boundaries and give artists a chance to expand their repertoire. One performance I went to included a video (they lower a screen from the ceiling), a band, several opera singers and a small chorus. As you are close to the performers it was a joy to take it all in. For both projects they have seats randomly, some with tables, others without. Get there early if you like the front row, get there late any you may be at the back beside the bar. Why 4 stars and not 5? I've not been in that bar area or eaten here but will update when I do. read more

I've only recently discovered Cottiers and I can't believe it's taken me so long. Cottiers Bar, Theatre and Restuarant is a little delight in the west end of Glasgow. Housed in an old church near Highburgh Rd, this establishment has a reasonably-priced restuarant, a lovely bar and an even nicer beer garden for those rare sunny days. There's regular theatre too where you can catch comedy, drama and music. I enjoyed my meal at the restaurant however I've heard mixed reviews from friends. The bar on the other hand always seems to get get a thumbs up. During the week it's a nice chilled-out atmosphere with low lighting- as you'd expect it gets busier on Fridays and Saturdays. Dog walkers take note- it's a dog friendly pub so feel free to stop by for a mid-walk pint with the pooch . read more

Hidden in the building of a former church on a leafy corner in the west end is this lively but chilled out little gem. The distinctive little beer garden is packed on sunny days and it always makes smile to walk past seeing locals of all ages enjoying a quiet drink. I believe they put on the bbq during the summer as well - bliss on a hot day! During the colder months the bar is a candle-lit little haven. Cottiers any night of the week is unfailingly beautiful. Its exterior from the gates to the entrance of the building, bewitches the guest into thinking they are entering into a land far far away. I remember my first time here and every other after that. Readily, I remember why we choose it time and time again..its enchanting, with that warm & toasty feel, and inhabits a constant classy happy crowd. From drinks to food and even scheduled entertainment, it has the all-in-one draw. Delicious across the board for: selection of bottled beers (including limited bottling Belgians), food and music~ And now that we are nearing holiday season, I suspect the place will bring its A-game in enhancing its already stellar visuals with more lights and enchantment. You know what I LOVE about Scotland? They turn churches into drinking establishments. As a Catholic School survivor, this gives me a sense of social justice. During my holiday in Scotland my partner-in-crime, The Baroness Lisa E. dragged me here so that we could enjoy the beer garden on a sunny Monday afternoon. What an amazing place to have a bite and a pint (or several). They have a good selection of beer and wine and a nice menu. Cottiers is really close to my flat and over the years my love of the place has waxed and waned. Currently quite liking it again. I've only eaten there a couple of times (in the bar), and it was good. Frequented by a mixture of west end types; students, boho-types and often a dog or two. The pub across the road (The Rock) caters to the unpretentious Sky Sports with their pint crowd, so Cottiers tends to be somewhat posher - if asking for wine, you'll be asked which grape variety, not "White, Red or Tonic?" With a good range of Whisky and other spirits, a couple of Ale pumps (Kelbourne) and Williams Joker IPA on draft, there's a decent choice of tipple. On sunny days, and during performance breaks at the adjoining theatre the bar gets really busy. The beer garden is probably the best in the west end, getting a table on a sunny day is a challenge, as is navigating the baby buggies at times! In winter, the real fire is just what's called for on a cold wet night. read more

I like the bar in the Cottier's and think it's reasonable priced. I always stand by the fact that I'm old enough to choose were I drink and don't' have to worry I get "ID'd" as I have it and I'm working and can afford to have a wee splurge once on a while. The drink make be a little more expensive than other plaes but the quality of the venue is worth it, in one world its simply just beautiful. The food is great and for a three course meal we paid £15 and it was delicious!!! What ruined the 5 star vote venue you for me was after I attended a wedding reception. We had been told the venue would be ready on the hour and many of the guest walked to the venue to kill some time and allow the bridal party time to get in and settled before we arrived. When we arrived at the venue was not ready, the bride and groom were left down stairs with there guest. Luckily it was a scorcher of a day, so no one was too bothered. When we got upstairs there was 2 large tables and the rest were doubles and trios. Dinner was late being served, around 2 hours , and the staff forgot many meals including one of the childrens despite being reminded about it several times and specifically being asked to serve the kids first as it'd been a long day. When it finally came it was slammed down on the table with no apology. Each table was to have two bottles of wine, which the bride and groom had paid for in advance, ours had none, as did several others, and when we asked for them the staff member was extremely rude and then went on to forget one of our parties meals. Instead of asking "have you got your meal" the manager kind of slid around looking "inconspicuously" at whose meals were forgotten, kind of like a Scooby Doo Villian. The staff talked through the vows and when it was time to change over the venue, we were yet again told to go downstairs they were moving all the table and when we came back up half the tables were still there. Don't get me wrong we had great fun however I was completely let down by a venue which I adore so much we often grab two buses just to go for a beer in! The reason I've decided not to completely boycott it, is that it was a warm day and people get stressed and forgetful on them, not to mention it was a wedding! I plan to revisit soon hopefully before the rotten weather kicks in! read more

Having not visited Cottier's for a good number of years, I decided to take my dad and boyfriend for a Sunday lunch. We checked the website and opted for something stew like. However when we arrived, the menu was different and had a big focus on the summer bbq. You take a table, note your number and order at the bar. My companions had mackerel, the butterflied chicken and I asked for chicken thighs. All of the BBQ menu items come with corn on the cob, tomato and red onion coleslaw, potato salad and bread. Unfortunately my thick Lanarkshire accent meant my order was translated as 'fries' rather than 'chicken thighs' so when the dishes arrived I was a bit disappointed when my main was a bowl of chips. The mark of good service however is how you deal with it, and for Cottiers this has to be first class. No complaints, no woes, and a simple "sorry about that, the bar person misheard you, let me get you your main dish in five minutes and there will be no extra charge." Also a word on the food, all fine however the mackerel was completely delicious. Highly recommend a beer in the beer garden when the suns out. It's up there as the perfect place for a stop off or just join the throng and sit there all day. read more

I love this place when the suns out, though I wonder if it's fair to award stars on the strength of paving slabs, benches and a blazing celestial body that tans us all irrespective of who's beer garden we tumble into. Inside I'm not quite so happy. Maybe I'm just over the whole novelty factor of drinking in old churches - though my atheist leanings do squeeze out a smile every time I order a pint of falling over juice. Food was ok last time I was in, though someone in my crowd had a couple of dogs in and while I love the scamps, their slobbering schnozzles didn't mix too well with hand rolled fajitas. read more

Cottiers has by my experience an overrated reputation. I attended a birthday lunch there on the 17th of June. There was another party booked in and due to this the place was very busy (although why take the bookings if you cannot handle the workload?). As I understand there was an 'incident' in the kitchen, and perhaps understandably the staff were harassed, this however is no excuse to be rude to the customers, as the staff frequently were. There was a chap outside working a barbeque and a separate menu was in place for that, everyone was fine with this and eventually we were allowed to order from it. Alas the burgers arrived burnt and tasteless. I have been eating out in Glasgow for nearly 25 years, and I know for sure that I will never return to this dreadful place again. read more

In Glasgow, I've realised that I've been in church more times to drink, rather than to attend mass. Having a devout Catholic upbringing, churches trigger memories of Friday morning mass at school, and Sunday fights with mom about going to mass for the second time in the week. Those years in an all-girls Catholic college preparatory school encouraged rebellion once I hit university, and to this day I still experience some Catholic guilt... more so now because (as my mother says) the boyfriend "doesn't believe in Jesus." Cottier's is a charming bar in a converted church along a beautiful tree-lined street in Hyndland. I've had the pleasure of enjoying drinks on the outside patio in the summer time when it's bustling, and a quiet pint with friends on random evenings. Cottier's seems to thrive more on word-of-mouth, than anything else, especially because it's tucked away. Drink prices can be a bit much, but I guess you're paying for the atmosphere and the "uniqueness" of the place. One of the nights we were there, a match was being projected onto the large screen. I haven't had the opportunity to try the food yet, but it's on my to-do list. Overall, the service is pretty standard, and good place to catch up with friends. Bottom line: You'll probably find me here on the patio on a sunny day all summer-long while I avoid writing my Masters dissertation. Cheers! read more

I came here for a meal last night and I can honestly say the venue was lovely. I would also like to add, that the chefs were very good with my dietary requirements. The meal however was very unusual and just terrible actually. I started with a beef and fried rocket with a soy reduction, which was the nicest part of my meal. It was very over seasoned but it was edible. The soy reduction had been reduced too much and it was incredibly salty. My girlfriend had the aubergine tempura which was so sweet it actually tasted like banana fritters you would get as a desert in a Chinese restaurant. Served with hummous, strangely. The main was a duck breast, and potato dish with something else which I can't remember. Again it was over seasoned but the duck had not been rested and it was the most chewy thing I've eaten in a very long time. The potatoes were nice though. My girlfriend had the vegetarian option which as it always ever is, is a ravioli which was incredibly thick with some sort of sauce that was made of double cream I think. She managed to eat about a third of it. For my desert I ordered the very unusual carrot cake stuffed with coconut , some white chocolate sauce and chocolate ice cream, and I only ordered that out of sheer curiosity. I was not let down by this, the carrot cake was cut in half and dessicated coconut was set between the two sides. The white sauce was possibly a warmed can of condensed milk and the ice cream was nice. It did taste fairly nice but it was so sweet that I considered needing a shot of insulin to get past half the desert. My girlfriend had the deconstructed tiramisu which actually tasted nice. I don't think I'll eat here again. For food of this terrible quality at quite a high price, I'm surprised they are still going. read more

Hands down a proper Glasgow gem. I had been to the downstairs pub plenty of times, and I've been to the theatre here as well and I have loved both. Finally I made reservations (my accident, I will admit) at the restaurant upstairs. It's quite, it's cosy, it's atmospheric and I enjoyed it. Immediately when I walked through the door that this must be a great place because one of the most amazing and knowledgable men in Glasgow (a pathologist) was sitting at one of the tables. Not only for this reason has this immediately become one of my favourite places in Glasgow. We ordered the squid starter and shared this with some bread - be careful it can be spicy. I had the fish and chips and it was delicious, my friends ordering the fish (a full fish with head and everything) and the ribs both of which were absolutely delicious. The meat was literally falling off the ribs, and if i had been hungrier i would have eaten it all. The wine list is extensive but carefully selected and the dessert menu (although we didn't indulge) sounds fantastic. A definite spot on the Recommendations List - although make sure that you bring money, because both restaurant and pub come with a relatively steep price tag (which probably explains why the restaurant is pleasantly quiet and pathologists decide to dine here). read more

I love Cottiers. Been lots of times and always enjoy my visits. Last night was different though. We ordered food and it was not good. A veggie moussaka that was more like a lasagne. It was served with a salad where there was quite a few old, slimy leaves. My friend had a butternut squash curry and she found it simply tasteless. It seems I have been remiss in my review writing! My most recent visit was a quick pitstop on the way home but I've been in for food on previous occasions. I love this space, and it's got a nicely laid back casual vibe to it, a great bar, friendly staff, it's dog friendly and I've never been in and not managed to get a seat. On a sunny weekend you can eat from the BBQ outside, or venture upstairs to the restaurant - which I'll review separately as I've not eaten in it for about 15 years - but the bar food is pretty good and the specials are usually a little bit different from your usual fare. read more

Can't say I've ever eaten in the Cottier's upstairs restaurant, but I've performed in the theatre and drank in the bar so I'm quite familiar with those aspects. In November 2011 I was in The Sound of Music at the Cottier's theatre, and it was an absolutely great experience. The staff who work both inside the theatre and the bar were always so pleasant and chatty, and despite the building being absolutely freezing cold 95% of the time I had a great time! The bar space itself is quite decent with an average selection at the bar. It gets absolutely chaotic in here after shows though, so don't expect a table if there's a show on, and weekends are relatively busy also. Great wee place with great staff and a lovely feel in the bar with a Spanish sort of decor. Also if you fancy it, the theatre is always putting on productions. Go see something and support the arts! read more

You won't leave Cottiers with much change in your wallet, but chances are you'll leave with a wholly satisfied belly. The food in this converted church is superb, particularly its BBQ dishes which perhaps offer the best pub food this side of the Clyde. A tenner for most dishes may seem steep, but bear in mind this banks you a huge chunk of meat, corn on the cob, bread and veg. I particularly recommend the Spanish chorizo. Cottiers really excels during the summer months when its extensive outdoor seating area bubbles with activity. Child and dog friendly, you can expect a mixed crowd mingling during the day, while at night the bar represents a warm and cosy place to enjoy an albeit slightly over-priced drink. Given this place is hidden away in a leafy, aesthetically-pleasing area of the city, Cottiers retains something of a word of mouth feel and rarely gets too raucous. Indeed, it also features a small theatre which has showcased plenty of local talent over the years. Always worth keeping an eye on listings for here. read more

I was looking forward to heading to Cottiers when I went a few weeks ago as I hadn't been before and I'm afraid I was rather disappointed! It was busy when we arrived ~7pm, which boded well and we had to do a bit of lurking around to get a table as seating was an important factor for food consumption. However, there seemed to be an epic mix up on how much a burger cost as they had a barbeque on as well as the kitchen - one of my friends paid £7.95 for a burger and chips, the other ended up paying £11.95 for a burger and chips with a wee bit of potato salad/coleslaw (and according to the menu this should only have been £10!). The burger, when it came was OK, but fairly bland, nothing to write home about. Lager was a bit on the pricey side for me also. read more

In the summer Cottiers is the perfect west end pub for sitting out on a long lazy sunday afternoon. Far enough away from Byres road to avoid the worst of the students it's outdoor area with plenty seating with a reasonable range of food and ales. read more

Going to watch a performance in the theatre and popped in for a drink first, 1st class service here if a bit pricey but nice atmosphere, whilst there booked a table for the restaurant later that evening. We arrived 10 mins early and were told by the waitress, "your very early, but just sit there" she pointed in the general direction of our table, we sat, "no not there over there" couldn't beleive her rudeness, she gave us 3 menus between 5 of us and told us to share, there were only another 3 tables with people at them the place was empty, she passed by our table on 5 occasions each time informing us that we would have a long wait, no drink offered. Another two people came in looking for a table, they hadn't booked and were sent packing, we didn't wait around for the bus load of people she was so obviously expecting. Never encountered such bad manners and extremely bad service. read more

Having been a regular for many a year in the upstairs restaurant , it was nice to get an opportunity to be a guest in the function suite . It has a similar vibe to Oran Mor but on a smaller scale. The wedding we attended was conducted in the former chapel, which lent suitable gravitas to the occasion. Staff were discreet throughout the ceremony and thereafter we were ushered to the rear of suite for drinks and photos while the staff set up for the wedding meal and speeches . This was seamless and before we knew it , tables , chairs , decorations and flowers were in place and we were invited to the tables for the remainder of the evening . Food was inviting , and tasty , always difficult given the numbers involved . Staff were gracious , unhurried , and unfailingly polite . A bar was in service throughout the night , which although not cheap, was well stocked and staff were suitably attentive . read more

Good atmosphere, good food and a good selection of beers, including a couple of real ales on draft. Prices are a wee bit higher on "like for like" beers than some of the bars in nearby Byres Rd, but it could be argued that Cottiers has a more relaxing atmosphere that allows you to chat better. Bar staff are attentive and know how to pull a pint and serve a cocktail, so no complaints there. All in all well worth a visit. read more
