Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a huge canyon park on tribal lands that was habited by several Native American peoples many years ago. There are many areas that you can explore that have overlooks, hiking trails and remains of ancient Pueblo villages. The biggest attractions are the 800-feet tall Spider Rock spire and the White House ruin. Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-SHAY) is located near Chinle in Northeastern Arizona. Even though it is a National Monument, the Navajo Nation entirely owns it. Around forty Navajo families live in the park. Other than the White House Trail, access to the canyon floor is restricted unless you book a tour guide. There are roads on both the North and South Rim where you can see ancient ruins and geologic structures. Canyon De Chelly has a visitor center with park rangers on hand and a gift shop. I was here recently and did the South Rim Drive. You can see ruins from the overlooks on South Rim Drive if you have binoculars. They are a little hard to see without them. This drive is the more popular side of the canyon because you can see Spider Rock and the White House ruin while on this road. On this drive are the Tunnel, Tsegi, Junction, White House, Sliding House, Face Rock and Spider Rock overlooks. Each overlook offers a unique perspective of the canyon floor and Navajo farmlands. We were able to do the White House Trail while here. It is the only trail that allows you to visit the bottom of the canyon without a guide. The hike is 2.5-miles round trip and descends nearly 600 feet to the canyon floor and back up. There are a few spots that can be a little slippery when raining. The end of the trail allows you to get up close to the White House ruin. This famous 1,000-year-old cliff dwelling was built by Ancestral Puebloans around 1060 AD. The White House has around 80 rooms and is named for the white plaster still visible on the walls. The hike itself isn't bad and worth it if you have some time. We had a nice time here at Canyon de Chelly. It brought back many memories of when I came here as a teenager. There are vendors at some of the overlooks that sell jewelry and other items. I wish we had more time to do the North Rim Drive to see the Massacre Cave Overlook. A sad event occurred here in 1805 when over a hundred Navajo people were murdered by the Spanish military while hiding in a cave.

I unfortunately didn't have time to go on a guided tour of Canyon de Chelly (it's located in the…read moreNavajo Nation, so you need to have a licensed tour guide to enter the majority of the Canyon), but I visited the welcome center, both the north and south rim drives, and hiked the White House Trail. The welcome center is staffed with NPS rangers and volunteers. There's a small gift shop and museum area with exhibits. There's also a hogan outside and you can ask the ranger to give a hogan talk and even enter it. The rim drives are gorgeous, although dusk and dawn really bring out the colors. The canyon rims are quite sheer which is different from a lot of other canyons. Pueblos can be seen from several lookouts, so bring binoculars. There tends to be people selling artwork and jewelry at the lookouts, so if you're interested, bring cash. The White House Trail is the only publicly accessible trail without a guide. It starts at the lookout, and you can see the structure from the parking lot, or decide to hike down to get a closer look (it's fenced off with a chain link fence to avoid people not respecting it). The hike is 2.5 miles round trip with little shade (although does have two cool tunnels), so bring water.

After arriving I walked around choosing our site. Some spots would not fit a 30+ft fifth wheel, but the one I did pick was perfect. We were the only one in the campground. Oct is a perfect time to visit. The owner came by later in the afternoon to check on us to see if we needed anything & collect payment. The night skies were amazing, you could see the Milky Way, because there is no light pollution. We were there 3 nights & couldn't believe how quite it was. Only saw 2 others in the whole camp. All sites are dirt, but fairly level. Owner hand built the campground with his uncle. He was a wealth of information about area. No hook ups, but there was an old porta potty (we did not use) RV has it's own. This is a no frills campground, bring what you need---take out what you brought. Generators are allowed, but please be respectful on quite times. Picnic tables & hand built rock fire rings were available. Dogs are allowed on leash, not a good idea to let them off, because there are wild animals in the area (didn't see any). Bring all your own food & camping items, because nothing is available on site. There are sites that I saw that would be tent only. We were very happy with price for the spot we got. Bring wood or buy from owner $7 a bundle, both are allowed. Safe fires were allowed. Highly recommend you give this place a try. $15 dollars a night for RVs No credit cards allowed, so bring cash. Right amount would be best.

Fantastic views that will make your stay truly memorable. The price is $20 bucks, but the views make it priceless. If we ever come through this area this will be the only place we will consider. The entrance road is a little rough, but if you take your time it is nothing to drive in. Sites are far apart & mostly level. All dirt sites, but well packed. Owner owns most of the land around the campground 250ac so he is ok with you hiking all of it as long as you stay away from his family's homes. He was very informative on things to do in area. Easy drive to Monument Valley, Bears Ears, Natural Bruges, Gooseneck State park, too many things to post here. This is a 1st come gets the sites only, no reservations. We were there in Oct., pulled in had the Campground to ourselves. The four days we were there we saw only 5 other campers. The sunrise & sunsets are to die for. There is one portable potty on site, clean, but we didn't use it. People not in RV's were. Campfires were allowed & you can bring your own wood. Do not harm local junipers or gather wood. Some of my pics show the formation that is the camps name sake. Our dogs loved the freedom of running around when there were no others on site. **there are reservation dogs roaming around & livestock, so please be respectful to others **everything you bring in you MUST pack out **some sites will accommodate large RVs ours was 31ft. **the stars are amazing, even seeing the Milky Way, no light pollution. **there is NO internet, cable, & our phone service was sketchy Owner or family member will come to take your money, there are no pay stations. You will love this campground due to views, peacefulness, distance from others, just a total immersion into the environment.

They park is very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. There is so much on the premises. A hotel, pool, gift shop, RV supply spot, restaurant, museum, excellent landscape viewing areas, hiking trails, the list goes on... The scenery is fantastic as you are surrounded by beautiful towering red rocks on all sides. I did a separate review of the restaurant which was unique and deli. If was not so crowded and lacking much outside space at the camp sites would be 5 stars.

The indoor pool was nice but a bit chilly, there's an outdoor area to soak up the sun. Be sure you bring plenty of groceries as the local market is a bit pricey. The caps on many of the dump pipes are missing or not replaced. But on the other hand, staff is always nice, and they do replace trees that are damaged from wind etc. I haven't checked out the restrooms or showers but I know people do use them. This is a popular campground as it is right in the middle of Monument Valley with great views. Gouldings campground in the area is nicer but this KOA is always on our way right off the highway (163, Forrest Gump Hwy).

We pulled in and were shocked when they told us the one night rate was $90. A month ago at Gouldings RV park we only paid $60 per night. Last week when we stayed in a Luxury RV Park near Prescott and paid only $74 per night and had a hot tub & swimming pool and paved streets. This park is new and the landscaping is young and the place is clean. KOA's are out go to RV stops because they are always reasonable and we've always been treated well. From now on we will stay at Gouldings when in Monument Valley. Their park is in a much nicer location with great views and hiking.

As you enter the center, there's the ranger desk to your right and the shop to your left, selling the usual assorted NPS goodies. In the back is a small museum displaying a diorama of the dwellings and many artifacts. There are so many beautiful pots on display! The trails of this monument start at the back of the center. Pass by the hogan and the dinosaur tracks. I walked the Sandal Trail, which is the only trail that leads you to a viewpoint of the cliff dwelling village. It's on the opposite rim of the canyon, so be sure to bring binoculars. I also did the Canyon View Trail which leads to the park's historic ranger station. I would definitely return for the seasonal ranger-led hikes - I visited too early in the year so they weren't offered yet.

August 23, 2026 - Gallup, NM…read more We stayed here for an overnight stop and were really impressed. This is a large, clean, well-kept RV park. They do have some long-term residents, but they limit the number, so most of the sites are for short-term stays. The owner is super friendly and welcoming. The gift shop has a surprisingly nice selection of gifts, along with camping essentials. The laundry and showers were clean, and there are two buildings with laundry and showers, which was really convenient since our site was toward the back of the park. We were also near the fenced dog park. The pool was a great way to cool off. They really embrace the USA theme, with a flag painted on the bottom of the pool, a Statue of Liberty, and even a pond shaped like the USA. Active military stay free, which is a nice touch. The rates were reasonable, and we took advantage of pretty much everything the park had to offer. The only thing we missed was the Cowboy Cookout/Texas BBQ. Unfortunately, we arrived on Sunday--the one day they don't offer the BBQ dinner. This was our second stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

They also put us in the last row, site 108 so our view is of the Desert scrub, it's very quiet back here. They did offer a barbecue dinner. I will post that menu, but we did not partake as we're trying to finish the food in the camper before we get home. We paid $66 per night for full hook up pull through site. This park is just a few miles from downtown Gallup and there are plenty of little restaurants and art galleries and such. There is also an Anytime Fitness about 5 1/2 miles away that will do a day pass. I did a separate review on that. I noted two different laundry areas and the price is very reasonable at $1.50 for a wash and $.75 for the dry. We did not need to do laundry while here so I cannot come on the effectiveness of the machine I noted that they have refreshed the pool very nicely! As well as I don't recall the water feature being there last time, but they have a cute bear fountain. There is also a dog park in the back corner. Our utilities worked great, staff was friendly, and we will always request a private site.

Nice people at the desk, but the campground itself stinks....literally. took the dog for a walk and…read morehit pockets of sewage smell throughout the campground. The official dog walk areas reek. Imagine being in the grossest outhouse trying to do YOUR business. We took the dog off property and down the street. If you go here, do not open your windows at night. You will smell that sewage odor all night. Lastly, the wireless internet didn't work even though we were fairly close to the office. One plus: the bathrooms were spotless and THEY smelled just fine. That's why I added an extra star.
