They do have some long-term residents, but they limit the number, so most of the sites are for short-term stays. The owner is super friendly and welcoming. The gift shop has a surprisingly nice selection of gifts, along with camping essentials. The laundry and showers were clean, and there are two buildings with laundry and showers, which was really convenient since our site was toward the back of the park. We were also near the fenced dog park. The pool was a great way to cool off. They really embrace the USA theme, with a flag painted on the bottom of the pool, a Statue of Liberty, and even a pond shaped like the USA. Active military stay free, which is a nice touch. The rates were reasonable, and we took advantage of pretty much everything the park had to offer. The only thing we missed was the Cowboy Cookout/Texas BBQ. Unfortunately, we arrived on Sunday--the one day they don't offer the BBQ dinner. This was our second stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

They also put us in the last row, site 108 so our view is of the Desert scrub, it's very quiet back here. They did offer a barbecue dinner. I will post that menu, but we did not partake as we're trying to finish the food in the camper before we get home. We paid $66 per night for full hook up pull through site. This park is just a few miles from downtown Gallup and there are plenty of little restaurants and art galleries and such. There is also an Anytime Fitness about 5 1/2 miles away that will do a day pass. I did a separate review on that. I noted two different laundry areas and the price is very reasonable at $1.50 for a wash and $.75 for the dry. We did not need to do laundry while here so I cannot come on the effectiveness of the machine I noted that they have refreshed the pool very nicely! As well as I don't recall the water feature being there last time, but they have a cute bear fountain. There is also a dog park in the back corner. Our utilities worked great, staff was friendly, and we will always request a private site.

We really had no idea where they actually were. Each campsite was sold with electric and water, but while there were two electrical hookups there was only one water and one picnic table between the two sites. Crews picked up trash and cleaned bathrooms. Feral dogs were noted several times and prairie dogs had their holes everywhere. With that said, I would stay there again. Do not miss going to the Red Rock Museum. Alayna, the curate, was wonderful and very knowledgeable. The displays were great.

I was visiting New Mexico in January and was bummed to see that WSWS was closed online; however, after reaching out in advance, Brittany was kind enough to accommodate our visit. I'm so glad that she did since it was one of the highlights of my trip! When we arrived, we met Stephanie at the visitor center. We had to knock several times to get a response, and when she opened the door, customer service was nonexistent. There was a scheduling mishap with our tour, and she made my friend and I feel unwelcome from the moment we arrived. She told us that we could walk around, but nobody would be available to give us a tour. My friend and I went outside, and fortunately, one of the staff passed by then turned around to guide us through the sanctuary. August was a fantastic guide and completely made up for the poor experience that we initially had. He was extremely knowledgeable, and it was awesome to hear about each dog's story, their care, and the community's support for WSWS. I decided to sponsor Atlas, a 12-year old wolf dog, and look forward to staying up to date on his well being.

Don't miss this if you're anywhere nearby. Doing the route 66 through New Mexico it's not that long a drive from Gallup. There aren't too many places to stay down here but right next-door (by local standards) is the El Morro RV camp and cabins, which also has an excellent restaurant. Another travel tip - if you're coming down here come on Wednesday or Thursday and stay over the weekend. Things are closed at the beginning of the week, including the not to be missed El Morro National Monument.

We had made reservations for 2 nights at El Morro, confirmed by an e-mail, and stating that we would receive an e-mail AND a text with the the code to our cabin several days before our arrival. We received NOTHING!! Attempts to reach anyone that could confirm that we had a place to stay by phone on the day of our arrival were fruitless. It took over an hour to finally receive a call from the owner. By That time we had made other plans, as the drive to El Morro without a confirmation that we had a place to stay was just too big of a risk. El Morro's failure to follow through on our reservation as they said that they would, along with the total inability to contact someone at the site that had a clue as to what was going on caused us to miss spending time with friends that we had not seen in over 30 years. There is nothing that can be done to replace that.....

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a huge canyon park on tribal lands that was habited by several Native American peoples many years ago. There are many areas that you can explore that have overlooks, hiking trails and remains of ancient Pueblo villages. The biggest attractions are the 800-feet tall Spider Rock spire and the White House ruin. Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-SHAY) is located near Chinle in Northeastern Arizona. Even though it is a National Monument, the Navajo Nation entirely owns it. Around forty Navajo families live in the park. Other than the White House Trail, access to the canyon floor is restricted unless you book a tour guide. There are roads on both the North and South Rim where you can see ancient ruins and geologic structures. Canyon De Chelly has a visitor center with park rangers on hand and a gift shop. I was here recently and did the South Rim Drive. You can see ruins from the overlooks on South Rim Drive if you have binoculars. They are a little hard to see without them. This drive is the more popular side of the canyon because you can see Spider Rock and the White House ruin while on this road. On this drive are the Tunnel, Tsegi, Junction, White House, Sliding House, Face Rock and Spider Rock overlooks. Each overlook offers a unique perspective of the canyon floor and Navajo farmlands. We were able to do the White House Trail while here. It is the only trail that allows you to visit the bottom of the canyon without a guide. The hike is 2.5-miles round trip and descends nearly 600 feet to the canyon floor and back up. There are a few spots that can be a little slippery when raining. The end of the trail allows you to get up close to the White House ruin. This famous 1,000-year-old cliff dwelling was built by Ancestral Puebloans around 1060 AD. The White House has around 80 rooms and is named for the white plaster still visible on the walls. The hike itself isn't bad and worth it if you have some time. We had a nice time here at Canyon de Chelly. It brought back many memories of when I came here as a teenager. There are vendors at some of the overlooks that sell jewelry and other items. I wish we had more time to do the North Rim Drive to see the Massacre Cave Overlook. A sad event occurred here in 1805 when over a hundred Navajo people were murdered by the Spanish military while hiding in a cave.

I unfortunately didn't have time to go on a guided tour of Canyon de Chelly (it's located in the…read moreNavajo Nation, so you need to have a licensed tour guide to enter the majority of the Canyon), but I visited the welcome center, both the north and south rim drives, and hiked the White House Trail. The welcome center is staffed with NPS rangers and volunteers. There's a small gift shop and museum area with exhibits. There's also a hogan outside and you can ask the ranger to give a hogan talk and even enter it. The rim drives are gorgeous, although dusk and dawn really bring out the colors. The canyon rims are quite sheer which is different from a lot of other canyons. Pueblos can be seen from several lookouts, so bring binoculars. There tends to be people selling artwork and jewelry at the lookouts, so if you're interested, bring cash. The White House Trail is the only publicly accessible trail without a guide. It starts at the lookout, and you can see the structure from the parking lot, or decide to hike down to get a closer look (it's fenced off with a chain link fence to avoid people not respecting it). The hike is 2.5 miles round trip with little shade (although does have two cool tunnels), so bring water.

After arriving I walked around choosing our site. Some spots would not fit a 30+ft fifth wheel, but the one I did pick was perfect. We were the only one in the campground. Oct is a perfect time to visit. The owner came by later in the afternoon to check on us to see if we needed anything & collect payment. The night skies were amazing, you could see the Milky Way, because there is no light pollution. We were there 3 nights & couldn't believe how quite it was. Only saw 2 others in the whole camp. All sites are dirt, but fairly level. Owner hand built the campground with his uncle. He was a wealth of information about area. No hook ups, but there was an old porta potty (we did not use) RV has it's own. This is a no frills campground, bring what you need---take out what you brought. Generators are allowed, but please be respectful on quite times. Picnic tables & hand built rock fire rings were available. Dogs are allowed on leash, not a good idea to let them off, because there are wild animals in the area (didn't see any). Bring all your own food & camping items, because nothing is available on site. There are sites that I saw that would be tent only. We were very happy with price for the spot we got. Bring wood or buy from owner $7 a bundle, both are allowed. Safe fires were allowed. Highly recommend you give this place a try. $15 dollars a night for RVs No credit cards allowed, so bring cash. Right amount would be best.

The first two-ish miles of this trail makes this one of the most well maintained trails I've ever…read morehiked. A lot of effort has been put into keep people on the trail to prevent damage to the surrounding flora. We did not hike the entire 7.5 to Ptarmigan Lake at the top (out and back the trail is 15 miles) because the trail became very overgrown with devils club to which I'm allergic and we did not have a machete. It was also 80 degrees and 6 mile hike was sufficient on my birthday when I just wanted to relax. The River is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, the flowers and berries are abundant on this trail. In late June, the blueberries we already ripening. There section of trail we walked was absolutely covered in crowberries, red and black currants, watermelon berries, raspberries, salmonberries, ligonberries, blueberries. There are wonderful flowers such as dogwood, fireweed, pushki, columbine, blue geranium and in some sections the smell of rose just absolutely is overwhelming. The beautiful glacial water runs along the trail, so even on a hot day the occasional cool breeze lifts up of the frosty water to keep you motivated. It's beautiful and wonderful! I have submitted an address correction to YELP which they still have not fixed- PTARMAGIN CREEK TRAIL IS NOT IN NEW MEXICO!!!! It is in Crown Point, Alaska around mile 23-24 of Route 9 (Seward Hwy)
