I unfortunately didn't have time to go on a guided tour of Canyon de Chelly (it's located in the…read moreNavajo Nation, so you need to have a licensed tour guide to enter the majority of the Canyon), but I visited the welcome center, both the north and south rim drives, and hiked the White House Trail. The welcome center is staffed with NPS rangers and volunteers. There's a small gift shop and museum area with exhibits. There's also a hogan outside and you can ask the ranger to give a hogan talk and even enter it. The rim drives are gorgeous, although dusk and dawn really bring out the colors. The canyon rims are quite sheer which is different from a lot of other canyons. Pueblos can be seen from several lookouts, so bring binoculars. There tends to be people selling artwork and jewelry at the lookouts, so if you're interested, bring cash. The White House Trail is the only publicly accessible trail without a guide. It starts at the lookout, and you can see the structure from the parking lot, or decide to hike down to get a closer look (it's fenced off with a chain link fence to avoid people not respecting it). The hike is 2.5 miles round trip with little shade (although does have two cool tunnels), so bring water.

It might not get any of the recognition of its big sister the Grand Canyon, but it is beautiful nonetheless! I'll also take the quietness and much smaller crowds. The South Road gives you great views for the afternoons, and the North Road gives you great morning views as the sun comes up. Either way there are some great viewpoints that are very different on each road. There are plenty of trails at the Outlook points, but you can really just make your own trail by walking wherever you can and want as long as you are careful. I take my pups and in some areas actually let them loose because we are the only ones around and because I trust my pups to not fall off the edge.

Fantastic views that will make your stay truly memorable. The price is $20 bucks, but the views make it priceless. If we ever come through this area this will be the only place we will consider. The entrance road is a little rough, but if you take your time it is nothing to drive in. Sites are far apart & mostly level. All dirt sites, but well packed. Owner owns most of the land around the campground 250ac so he is ok with you hiking all of it as long as you stay away from his family's homes. He was very informative on things to do in area. Easy drive to Monument Valley, Bears Ears, Natural Bruges, Gooseneck State park, too many things to post here. This is a 1st come gets the sites only, no reservations. We were there in Oct., pulled in had the Campground to ourselves. The four days we were there we saw only 5 other campers. The sunrise & sunsets are to die for. There is one portable potty on site, clean, but we didn't use it. People not in RV's were. Campfires were allowed & you can bring your own wood. Do not harm local junipers or gather wood. Some of my pics show the formation that is the camps name sake. Our dogs loved the freedom of running around when there were no others on site. **there are reservation dogs roaming around & livestock, so please be respectful to others **everything you bring in you MUST pack out **some sites will accommodate large RVs ours was 31ft. **the stars are amazing, even seeing the Milky Way, no light pollution. **there is NO internet, cable, & our phone service was sketchy Owner or family member will come to take your money, there are no pay stations. You will love this campground due to views, peacefulness, distance from others, just a total immersion into the environment.

We really had no idea where they actually were. Each campsite was sold with electric and water, but while there were two electrical hookups there was only one water and one picnic table between the two sites. Crews picked up trash and cleaned bathrooms. Feral dogs were noted several times and prairie dogs had their holes everywhere. With that said, I would stay there again. Do not miss going to the Red Rock Museum. Alayna, the curate, was wonderful and very knowledgeable. The displays were great.

There is so much to see in the Four Corners region. For example, choose Highway 191 and it will be…read moredifficult to keep your eyes on the road. I've traversed that blacktop so many times and yet I missed the obvious: the sign for the Sand Island campground and petroglyphs. This campground is a great base for exploring the region and the adjacent boat launch area that hugs the San Juan River makes it even more pleasant. Of course, what lured me here is the large 300-foot long sandstone panel of petroglyphs that overlooks the campground. Thankfully protected by a fence, the images here are in very good condition with none of the bullet holes and routine vandalism that too often affects other sites. Over 1,000 images here date from 3000 BCE to AD 300 and are the result of many peoples: Ute, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Pueblo, and European ancestry, too. Some of the etched images no longer contrast well against the surface because desert varnish -- the dark mineral coating that coats stone over time -- has seeped into the crevices of the rock art. The nuanced surface simply attests to the age of these petroglyphs. Spend a night camping at Sand Island and you'll literally have a front row seat to ancient history.

As you enter the center, there's the ranger desk to your right and the shop to your left, selling the usual assorted NPS goodies. In the back is a small museum displaying a diorama of the dwellings and many artifacts. There are so many beautiful pots on display! The trails of this monument start at the back of the center. Pass by the hogan and the dinosaur tracks. I walked the Sandal Trail, which is the only trail that leads you to a viewpoint of the cliff dwelling village. It's on the opposite rim of the canyon, so be sure to bring binoculars. I also did the Canyon View Trail which leads to the park's historic ranger station. I would definitely return for the seasonal ranger-led hikes - I visited too early in the year so they weren't offered yet.

Extremely rocky, no campfires allowed, and a cheap/rough picnic table for you to use is all. There's no grass, it's just rough rock like someone turned a rough parking lot into a cheap campground by just calling it a campground. Also, to be honest, I didn't even go look at the showers or restrooms in the little hut that they have them in, I just left. I would recommend going for the sites for $10, turning around, and sleeping somewhere else, an extremely underwhelming campground.

The towels were gross, discolored and super rough. The bed sheets were also discolored. New towels and bed sheets every so many years should be a must! We pulled in and were shocked when they told us the one night rate was $90. A month ago at Gouldings RV park we only paid $60 per night. Last week when we stayed in a Luxury RV Park near Prescott and paid only $74 per night and had a hot tub & swimming pool and paved streets. This park is new and the landscaping is young and the place is clean. KOA's are out go to RV stops because they are always reasonable and we've always been treated well. From now on we will stay at Gouldings when in Monument Valley. Their park is in a much nicer location with great views and hiking.

The night sky is overwhelmingly gorgeous, and I can't remember lovelier stars than here. If only Van Gogh had visited. As it's the desert, the summer is overwhelmingly hot. The sun will attack you if you don't pay attention! It's Mario Bros 3, and the angry sun is swooping down everywhere. Also, the flies that come with the horses next door visit often, but we kept them at bay with our fan and fly swatters, and the scenery won out over the flies. The horses next door are a separate business but were actually great, and conveniently you can book different rides times right from the camp store. The bathhouses were sparkling, the laundry was conveniently next door. The bathhouse/laundry lighting was clever enough to be visible yet not detract from the stars. The camp store had practical and souvenir goods, and the staff were helpful. What a gorgeous spot. We'd come back again.
